Vin de Pays, Vin de France: Great Wines, Great Values!

Share

Since we opened, Chambers Street has been happily featuring unknown French growers who make fabulous wines, many of them outside the normal AOC structures either by choice or by geography. Today's offer contains fourteen of our favorite Vin de Pays, Vin de France and otherwise unusual wines. Some of these are nearing the end of stock, and others are about to arrive - all of them offer sensational value and superb quality to those who find delicious and inexpensive to be desirable attributes....

Navarre NV Vin de France Grenache Rosé Demi-Sec

This is a delicious vin doux naturel from Thierry Navarre made from very late-harvested Grenache. We imagine that it's a wine made the way wine used to be made all over the Languedoc before temperature control was an option. A bit sweet and somewhat sherry-like, the aromas are of prune and ripe cherry, with licorice and brown spice. Very long and nutty on the palate, perhaps the best way to imagine this wine is to think of an Oloroso sherry... then extrapolate! Absolutely delicious and a great accompaniment to chocolate, fruit tarts, dried fruits or simply by itself as an apéritif. Thanks to Thierry for finally making a label and shipping us some of this unique local specialty.

Domaine des Amphores 2012 IGP des Collines Rhodanniennes Detour Blanc

Domaine des Amphores, a long-time organic estate in Chavanay, just south of Condrieu, produces excellent Saint-Josephs as well as red and white Vin de Pays. "Detour" is made from Roussanne, Clairette and Marsanne - it's a delicious Northern Rhone wine and one of the best values in the store. The aromas are lovely - very floral, with citrus, hay and wet stone. On the palate there are peach, citrus, stone and honeysuckle flavors balanced with bright acidity. The finish is long and crisp with citrus and minerals. Thanks to Philippe and Veronique Grenier for this lovely wine and great value! David Lillie

Barou 2013 Vin de Pays Syrah Cuvee des Vernes

From 40 year-old Syrah vines in Charnay, just outside the Saint-Joseph AOC, on living soils tended organically for forty years by Marie-Agnès and Emmanuel Barou. Plowing by tractor or weeding by hand on the steep slopes. Hand-harvested, wild-yeast fermentations, aging one year in 4 to 5 year-old barrels. The 2013 "Vernes" shows raspberry and blueberry fruit with hints of musk, violet, citrus and spice, really pretty and fresh. Black and red fruits on the palate with pepper, smoke and saline minerals with bright acidity in the finish. Really a delicious Syrah showing the granite soils and great farming — enjoy now, served cool or wait 3 to 5 years. After a few days in the fridge, re-corked, the wine is softer, quite pretty and shows lovely ripe fruit on the finish — this wine is a sensational value!

The Barou family family makes delicious wines, and grows cherries and apricots on their mixed-use organic estate in the hills around Saint-Joseph and Condrieu. Their 2013 Vin de Pays Marsanne is a sensational value! Light bronze/gold color.  Aromas of lime-flower, honeysuckle, kiwi, citrus, apricot and hay, really quite pretty. Ripe stone fruits on the palate with lemon, spice, saline minerals and good balancing acidity in the long finish. Serve this lovely wine with chicken, full-flavored fish and Asian foods. Highly recommended!

Barou 2013 Vin de Pays Collines Rhodaniennes Viognier

Forty years of organic viticulture, currently certified by Ecocert, has its rewards and they are clearly on display in this 2013 Vin de Pays. As a Viognier, it remains true to form offering a florid nose of hyacinth, jasmine, and linden blossom before transitioning to honey, ground ginger, cardamom, and cumin. The palate is medium-bodied, slightly sweet, low acid with a glycerine core that finishes with blueberries and honeysuckle. An ideal summer salad wine! David Salinas

Ferme Saint-Martin 2012 Côtes du Rhône Blanc

This is a delicious, complex Cotes-du-Rhone white from our organic friends Guy and Thomas Jullien at the Ferme-Saint-Martin. From Grenache Blanc, Clairette and Roussanne. Beautiful aromas of citrus, honeysuckle, apricot, tea and brown spice. The palate shows yellow fruit, earth, hay and stone flavors with firm spicy acidity. While not a sweet wine it shows ripeness, weight and complexity - light and crisp and without character it is not! A unique and lovely wine that will accompany Asian foods, chicken, full-flavored fish dishes and cheeses. Fabulous value!

Ferme Saint-Martin 2013 Côtes du Ventoux Rosé d'Entrevon

A lovely rosé of Syrah, Grenache and Cinsault grown in the Ventoux, really outstanding in the 2013 vintage. Pretty red fruit aromas, light red-currant fruit on the palate with good length. With aeration this really gets serious, with cherry fruit that is deep and long. A pure and delicious food-friendly wine, with minimal sulfur. Did we say it's a great value? As of March 2015 this wine is even better with lovely deep red currant/cherry fruit...Delicious!

Cabernet Sauvignon, Carignan and Syrah grown in beautiful organic vineyards high in the Roussillon, and vinified with zero sulfite added. Lapuyade 2012 Jurançon Sec (Petit & Gros Manseng)

Clos Marie-Louise/Château Lapuyade is a beautiful biodynamic estate deep in the hills of Jurançon, south of Pau. Their wines are harvested by hand, fermented with wild yeasts and aged in old barrels purchased from Yquem and Haut-Brion. This bottle, based on the two better white grapes of Jurancon, Gros and Petit Manseng, seriously over delivers in terms of complexity for the price. You'll find aromas of pineapple, citrus, peach and caramel apple on the nose, along with a light oakiness that would not work for all white wines, but fits perfectly with this one. The palate is essentially dry... but leaves an enticing sense of sweetness that makes it an excellent choice for cheeses, especially the sheep's milk cheeses of the Pyrenees. Flavors of lemon confit, stone, pineapple and oak are backed by very firm acidity. Note: Those with the patience to keep this bottle around for a few days, re-corked in the fridge, will be rewarded with an awesome display of rich, complex exotic fruit. This wine is absolutely sensational! MSB & DL

Navarre 2013 Vin de Table de France Vin d'Oeillades (12 held)*

Nearly extinct, "Oeillades" is an ancient variety of the Languedoc, possibly related to Cinsault, giving soft, ripe wines with low alcohol. Thierry Navarre is preserving many old varieties in his mountain vineyards and makes a lovely rosé and this unusual and delicious red from this disappearing grape. Aromas of plum, prune, violet, spice, tea and earth. On the palate, peppery red currant and blackberry, quite ripe with a bit of prune and rose petal, with firm citrusy acids. Ripe but light at 11.5 % alcohol. A fascinating and delicious wine to serve cool with charcuterie, grilled meats, Moroccan tagines, great value as well!

Peybonhomme 2012 Blaye Côtes de Bordeaux L'Atypic (Malbec/Cab Franc)

What's atypical about this delicious wine from our biodynamic friends, the Huberts of Chateau Peybonhomme-les-Tours? It's a blend of Malbec and Cabernet Franc rather than Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, giving the wine a more supple palate and quite different fruit character. The wine has lovely, deep blackberry and cassis liqueur aromas with red currant, cassis and cherry on the supple, lush palate, with hints of earth and smoke. Beautifully balanced with the just the right amount of lifting acidity. More "forward" than most Bordeaux, this versatile wine pairs beautifully with grilled foods and barbeque and will be a big hit this spring and summer served cool. Fabulous value!

Parentière 2012 Vin de France (Organic) Fraîcheur Iodée L'Atlantique

The Parentière Fraîcheur Iodée de L'Atlantique, which roughly translates as "Atlantic sea-spray" is made from Gros Plant (aka Folle Blanche) grown on gabbro soils near Vallet in the Muscadet Sèvre et Maine region. Domaine de la Parentière is a tiny estate which has been practicing organic agriculture for more than 30 years—the grapes are hand-harvested and fermented with wild yeasts and the wines are never chaptalized, remaining light, mineral and refreshing. At 10.2% alcohol, this wine is light and lovely with subtle aromas of citrus, herbs and wet stone with vibrant, fresh acidity. The intriguing finish with hints of almond, citrus and earth is typical of the gabbro soils. Perfect with shellfish and seafood or quaffed outdoors on a hot summer day, this wine is a superb and refreshing value!

Lunotte (Christophe Foucher) 2011 Vin de France Terra Incognito (Sauvignon)

Christophe Foucher is doing fabulous work on his tiny estate just east of Clos Roche Blanche in Touraine. His "micro-cuvées" have fabulous character and transcend the regional norms thus his wines are always simply Vin de France. Terra Incognito is Sauvignon Blanc from old vines, hand-harvested, fermented and aged for two years in small, old barrels without added sulfur. The resulting wine is extraordinary with intense aromas of lemon peel, dried herbs, bitter melon and lime flower. Dense palate of candied citrus, earth, pear, caramel, stone with a hint of oxidation and strong acidity. Fabulous length. Not for quaffing — this is a wine of contemplation to pair with full flavored fish and chicken dishes and goat cheeses. Highly recommended!
