2012s from Martin Bart and Gilles Lafouge; Lovely Burgundies, Great Values!!

"Value" and "Burgundy" are words that don't frequently go together and yet these two estates consistently produce beautiful wines which we are able to offer at extremely reasonable prices. The 2012 vintage is particularly successful for both Bart and Lafouge with the wines showing great purity of fruit, bright acidity and great terroir expression and balance. (Please note: Bart Rosé and Bourgogne Rouge arrive Monday 3/30.)

Domaine Jean and Gilles Lafouge, Auxey-Duresses: There is excellent vineyard work here, in the process to becoming organic, with very short pruning. Hand-harvesting and wild-yeast fermentations of course, about 25% new oak, minimal batonnage for the whites and natural clarifications. Jean and his son Gilles are quiet, friendly and modest. Their wines in some ways reflect their personalities - always balanced and subtle with lovely fruit and precise expression of the terroirs. Says John Gilman in The View From the Cellar "The reds here are lovely, soil-driven and beautifully balanced wines with the ability to drink well early on and yet age gracefully for at least fifteen to twenty years. The Lafouge reds are extremely elegant and refined examples of Auxey-Duresses and offer impressive complexity and depth... and are amongst the very finest Burgundian values of which I am aware."

Domaine Martin Bart, Marsannay: The affable Martin Bart inherited part of the Clair-Dau estate including vines in Bonnes Mares and Clos de Bèze but the principal holdings are in Marsannay, including the fine lieu-dit of "Champs Salomon."  Here the style is a bit more concentated, with the full, ripe character balanced well by the brightness of the 2012 vintage. The "Champs Salomon" is a great expression of this fine mid-slope parcel, while the "Les Echezots," higher and exposed more to the north, is especially pretty, a bit lighter and drinks beautifully young. And of course the Marsannay Rosé and Bourgogne Rouge will be great additions to summer barbeques and picnics....

Bart 2014 Marsannay Rosé

A lovely rose of Pinot Noir from Martin Bart in Marsannay, the 2014 shows a bit more weight than usual in this very pretty vintage of soft, forward fruit. Pale pink color. Pretty hints of strawberry lead to a refreshing palate of berry, citrus and red-currant fruit with good acidity. This is a lovely wine that will be very versatile at the table and refreshingly delicious by itself all summer long (and fall and winter, too) and it's a great value!

Bart 2012 Bourgogne Pinot Noir

The Bart 2012 Bourgogne Rouge is a sensational value, combining lovely lush strawberry and black cherry fruit with earthy spice and mineral flavors, framed in bright acidity, with surprising length for a wine at this level. This is drinking beautifully now and should develop nicely over the next five years. Serve cool and enjoy this summer with all your outdoor cooking - this is a simply delicious Pinot Noir!

Bart 2012 Marsannay Les Echezots

From 30 year-old vines in the lower part of Echezots, a windy spot. Aged in used large and small barrels. Usually one of the lighter, brighter Marsannays from Martin Bart, the 2012 Les Echezots is insanely delicious! Intense aromas of ripe red currant and strawberry confit lead to a palate that is round and supple with dense red fruits, citrus and earth — just lovely with soft tannins and good acidity. Earthy red/black fruits linger in the finish. Serve cool, drink over the next five years.

Bart 2012 Marsannay Les Champs Salomon

Les Champs Salomon, a vineyard in a prime mid-slope position, gives one of the most dense and powerful of Marsannays, and is always the "biggest" wine in Martin Bart's portfolio. The limestone sub-soil here is similar to that in parts of Gevrey Chambertin, with clay topsoil. The vines are 35 years-old. Hand-harvested, wild yeast fermentation with a long maceration and 18 months of aging in barrels, 30% of which are new. The 2012 is remarkably aromatic and lush with ripe black raspberry and black cherry with violets, dried herbs, cocoa and a bit of toasty oak. The palate shows deep, meaty red fruits with good acidity and soft tannins. This is an opulent and delicious glass of Burgundy that is gorgeous now, but wait 3 to 5 years for the whole picture, drink until 2024.

Lafouge 2012 Auxey-Duresses Rouge

This is one of our favorite, if somewhat unknown domains of Burgundy. Jean Lafouge and his son Gilles make classic, balanced, beautiful Burgundies at affordable prices and their village level Auxey-Duresses is always lovely and a great value. The 2012 is slightly riper than usual with lovely aromas of strawberry and tart cherry, with violet, rose, citrus and spice. Medium-bodied, with citrusy red fruits on the palate with great balance and refreshing acidity, the wine shows hints of earth and mineral that will develop nicely with time. Lovely now, and a great pairing with poultry, white meats and mild cheeses, best perhaps in 5 to 8 years.

Lafouge 2012 Auxey-Duresses 1er Cru Les Duresses

Les Duresses, according to Jasper Morris, is the best placed vineyard in Auxey-Duresses, on a steep south-east facing slope that continues into Monthelie. This wine is always well-structured, a bit less forward than Lafouge's La Chapelle and ages beautifully. In 2012 the aromas are bright and pretty, the typical black fruits on the palate are earthy and ripe but with great balance and firm acidity. Decant well in advance, or open the day before if drinking now, keep 5 to 8 years for peak drinking until 2030. This is a serious Burgundy and an excellent value.

Lafouge 2012 Auxey-Duresses 1er Cru La Chapelle

The 2012 Auxey-Duresses 1er Cru La Chapelle is another great effort from Jean and Gilles Lafouge, showing deep fraise-des-bois and black-cherry fruit aromas with hints of cocoa and earth. The palate is round and ripe with black cherry, strawberry liqueur, herbal notes, earth and vanilla framed in the bright acidity of the vintage. This is a lovely wine that is delightful now, peak drinking 2020 to 2030. Highly recommended.

Lafouge 2012 Auxey-Duresses 1er Cru Climat du Val

The Lafouge Climat du Val is normally the least forward of the three premier crus, and needs a bit more aging to reach it's peak. The 2012 shows lovely aromas of black raspberry, red currant, violet and earth. The palate is light but intense with firm acidity and dense, very earthy berry fruits. More mineral then fruit on the palate and with a very long finish of ripe berry and saline minerals. 2012 is a vintage of pure fruit, firm acidity and excellent terroir expression and the Climat du Val is a great example - drink now in it's lovely if austere youth, cellar for five years and drink happily until 2030.

Lafouge 2012 Pommard 1er Cru Les Chanlins

Les Chanlins, a premier cru bordering Volnay, expresses the prettier side of Pommard. A continuation of Volnay Pitures (formerly known as Volnay Chanlins until 2006), the vineyard is steep with more limestone and pebbles rather than clay, producing wines which are typically more generous than backwards. The 2012 from Lafouge is a lovely expression: red-fruited and darkly floral on the nose followed by a meaty earthiness. The palate has good concentration with layers of cherry and plum fruit, fine tannins, and a long savory finish. This is well-balanced and should drink nicely young while having all the elements to shine with a few years in the bottle. A classic Burgundy which offers tremendous value! John McIlwain

Lafouge 2012 Meursault Les Casses-Têtes

The lieu-dit Les Casses TĂȘtes is located on the hillside above the premier cru Les Gouttes d'Or and next to Le Tesson. The soils are thin and rocky producing wines of great energy and lift. The 2012 Lafouge is a very pale gold color with aromas of wet stone, pear, fresh herbs and lemon peel with hints of oak. The palate is crystalline and vibrant with stony acidity and flavors of marcona almonds, bitter lemon, dried pear and saline minerals. This is a beautifully structured Meursault to drink now in its rather intense youth with crab, broiled sole, flounder and cod, or cellar for ten to fifteen years or more. David Lillie


Perfumed and floral, with notes of lemon peel, white flowers. This is very chalky on the medium-bodied palate followed by yellow fruits, pear skin, and a discreet touch of oak. The finish is long, fresh, and sapid. This is quite pretty and would be perfect with soft-shell crabs, roasted cod, or crab cakes remoulade. John McIlwain
