Piedmont Week - Friday - Cavallotto

In the opinion of this map-loving wine geek, Alessandro Masnaghetti, the author of the map pictured above, would already be Sir Alessandro, as he has performed extraordinary services for his country – if only Italy had knighthoods. Masnaghetti’s ever-expanding library of vineyard maps began with fantastic maps of Barolo and Barbaresco. Above you can see some of the map for Castiglione Falletto, with the vineyard called Bricco Boschis colored in purple, and almost entirely owned by Cavallotto; the buildings by the numeral 6 are the Cavallotto home and cantina. The part of Bricco Boschis called Colle Sud-Ovest (as on some of the bottles in this offer) is made up of the right-hand purple sections. I am crazy about older Cavallotto; a key experience was another truly memorable dinner, when a super-generous customer opened about a dozen bottles going back to 1961. The wines were amazing, and it was very nice that Alfio Cavallotto was there to confirm our impressions (he’s a very kind and polite guy and would probably have been positive no matter what, but it was clear that his response was genuine). These bottles should offer more such experiences. Jamie Wolff

Cavallotto 1961 Barolo

"A genuine product, bottled in the place of production. Serve at room temperature, between 15-18 degrees [celsius], handle with care, pouring slowly, and not from too high, being careful not to let the sediment descend. Pay attention to not shake the bottle, even when you pull the cork.

Drink slowly to taste the flavors and to appreciate the delicate and pleasing nuances of the wine."

Cavallotto 1974 Barolo Bricco Boschis

"This wine, produced with selected grapes obtained only from our vines in Castiglione Falletto, at the center of the Barolo zone, aged in large oak barrels and left to rest in bottle in our cellar, every year, with a ritual that is always renewed, offers people the flavors, aromas, sensations and feeling of something that comes from the earth and that brings an uncontaminated essence and vitality."

Cavallotto 1975 Barolo Bricco Boschis

"You are in Piedmont, at the extreme northwest of of Italy, at the farm of Bricco Boschis of the brothers Olivio and Gildo Cavallotto. With a great many years of experience, the fields have been classified according to their composition and to identify their ideal purposes. The wines they produce, very rich in finesse and fruit are the result of patient attention and care devoted to the vines and in the cellar."
