Spring is Here (Maybe) - Our First Crop of Rosés!

Share

The migrating birds recently arrived in New York seem a bit tentative with their songs of Spring, doubting perhaps that the dreadful winter of 2014/2015 is finally behind us. But we are optimistic and are begining to look forward to those warm spring and summer evenings enjoying a tasty rosé with lighter warm-weather fare, maybe even a picnic in the park or a weekend at the beach. And there is no better place to purchase rosé wines than Chambers Street, as we are firm believers in naturally-made rosés whose subtle fruit, crisp acidity and lively minerality provide a delicious compliment to a wide variety of cuisines. Of particular interest will be new arrivals from Burgundy, Beaujolais and the Loire Valley as good weather at the end of the 2014 growing season in these regions led to some delightful results. Also included in today's email are a number of our favorite wines from the 2013 vintage. While it's true that the majority of rosé wines, which are machine harvested, innoculated with aromatic yeasts and rushed to market, rarely last more than a year, the wines we offer are from serious estates, mostly organic, who harvest by hand and ferment with wild yeasts producing wines that improve with a year in bottle and drink well for two to three years. For example, the 2013 Clos du Joncuas Gigondas, the current vintage from this wonderfully old-fashioned estate, is a superb wine that is still developing and showing beautifully. As many of these wines are very limited in availability, we urge you to stock up while supplies last...

Viña Zorzal 2014 Navarra Garnacha Rosado

Viña Zorzal offers some seriously delicious wines from old vines for very little money (as fans of their delightful red Graciano can attest). This one honors the traditional wine of the Navarra region - rosado of Garnacha - and is made from the Sanz family's low-yielding, head trained, organically farmed, old vine Garnacha. Fragrant red current, raspberry, and pink peppercorn aromas lead to distinctive crushed cranberry and strawberry fruit, with zesty pink grapefruit, tropical and herbal undertones on the finish. Zorzal offers impressive concentration, freshness, and complexity at an unbelievable price. Bold, clear, and comforting, we love this wine after a particularly long day and alongside anything from the grill. Its new label features an image of popcorn kernels because Xabi Sanz of Zorzal recommends it as an accompaniment to popcorn and a movie. We look forward to giving that pairing a try! Ariana Rolich

Ameztoi 2014 Getariako Txakolina Rubentis Rosé

This light bodied, dry, crisp rose is a testament to the Ameztoi family's long history of producing txakoli in Getaria. The vineyard overlooks the Atlantic Ocean and is comprised of 150 year old vines. This rose is made from the indigenous grapes Hondarribi Beltza and Hondarribi Zuri, grown on sand and clay soils and fermented in steel tanks. The 2014 vintage shows ripe strawberry on the nose leading to red, candied fruit on the palate, with a hint of zesty lemon-lime on the finish. A little residual carbonic gas at bottling gives this wine some fresh spritz. Perfect for a warm summer afternoon with friends! Lily Sears

Castellroig 2013 Penedes Ull de Llebre Rosat (Still)

100% Ull de Llebre from Marcel Sabate, producer of our perennial best selling sparkler - Castellroig Cava! His rose undergoes a short maceration and long, cool fermentation in stainless steel for a brisk and thirst-quenching wine of terroir. As with many of our favorite roses, this one displayed boisterous acidity and angularity upon release and benefitted from an extra year of evolution in the bottle. Sour cherry, wild strawberry, sea salt, and dusty raspberry patch aromas; tingly acidity buoys the deep, dry palate of wild green herbs, tart cranberry and raspberry, with a pronounced minerality on the long, cool finish. An excellent rose to pair with spicy fare and anything from the grill. Ariana Rolich

Bermejos 2013 Lanzarote Rosado of Listán Negro

Bermejos' 100% Listán Negro rosado is one of the last to arrive each year. This means that (with some planning) we can offer the previous, more developed, vintage while we wait for the new one. While no rose of integrity is harmed by an extra year of bottle age, roses as complex as Bermejos' exult in it! Stimulating aromas of tomato stems, wild strawberry, watermelon pith, espresso, and ashy minerality carry over to the palate of tart, delicate cranberry, lots of sea salt, cherry blossoms, green almond, and seedy raspberry fruit. Light, dry, vigorously mineral, and multi-dimensional, this is an elegant accompaniment to seafood (squid, sashimi, clams) as well as gazpacho, deviled eggs, charcuterie, and rustic, nutty cheeses. Ariana Rolich

Los Bermejos is a winery based on the island of Lanzarote, part of Spain’s Canary Islands. In 1730 the island was covered with thick black lava and ash from a month-long volcanic eruption. What was left behind was a terroir well-suited for growing grapes but not much else. Lanzarote wines offer unique flavor. Think of this as a year-round rosado. It’s fresh and red fruited but also savory and complex. Enjoy with charcuterie and salty cheeses, similar to a sherry. Christine Manula

Perdigão, Quinta Do 2012 Dão Rosé

This is a serious rose, perfect for your friends who claim to only drink red! Quinta do Perdigao's wines impress us with their density, vintage variation (real wine should taste different every year!), and complexity. Perdigao’s rose is a blend of all of the red grapes grown on their seven hectare, certified organic estate (Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz, Jaen, and Alfrocheiro), which was planted in 1997 on the granite soils overlooking the Dao. Serious and age-worthy, this 2012 displays sumptuous texture and deep, Portuguese spice, minerality, and length. Deep, clear, burnished garnet in color, with developed, gamey aromas of red licorice, musk, and rich, mineral soil; the palate is complex and pure, with crushed black raspberry, hibiscus, wild blueberry, tarragon, cinnamon, black pepper, and wild rose. Challenging and wonderful, to pair with sausages, lamb chops, steak, or cheeses. Ariana Rolich

Edmunds St. John 2014 El Dorado County Bone-Jolly Gamay Rosé

This rose from Steve Edmunds marks the fourth vintage sourced exclusively from Witters Vineyard in El Dorado County. At 3,400 feet, the Gamay Noir grows in the rare granite-rich soils of Bob Witters’ pear orchard, where the long, sunny growing season and soils parallel those of the Southern Beaujolais. After another year of severe drought in California, the 2014s have arrived remarkably triumphant. This copper-pink rose is deeply aromatic, with fresh red berry notes that give way to lush raspberry and stone flavors. The racy acidity and lingering mineral finish make this a thirst-quenching and food-friendly rose. Amanda Bowman

Dashe, Mike 2014 Todd Brothers Ranch Zinfandel Rose

Mike Dashe channels the essence of Zinfandel in this rose from the 50 year-old vines planted on steep, red rock soils of Todd Brothers Vineyard in Alexander Valley. Complex, spicy aromas of coriander, cinnamon, rose petals, and red berries continue onto the palate of rich strawberry, tamarind, herbal hibiscus, and fleshy cherry fruit. Smoked fish, pastrami, garlicky short ribs, and roasted vegetables have met their refreshing match! Red wine drinkers will appreciate this style of rose with dishes that typically call for whites: salmon, salads, pestos, and carbonara. Substantial and sultry. Ariana Rolich

Arnot-Roberts 2014 Clear Lake Rosé

This delicious vintage of Arnot-Roberts' Touriga Nacional-based rose underwent 24 hours maceration, native yeast fermentation, and was raised in stainless steel. It features pretty aromas of watermelon and strawberries, with a sheer but complex palate of raspberry, blossoms, spicy peppercorn, and spice. The grapes come from Luchsinger Vineyard (home to Arnot-Roberts' coveted Trousseau), which was planted in 1999 at 1400 feet elevation in California's Clear Lake AVA. A refreshing alternative for fans of pale pink, thirst-quenching styles of rose - this one has personality! Ariana Rolich

Bedrock 2014 California Ode to Lulu Rose

Bedrock takes rose incredibly seriously. Their 2009 "Ode to Lulu" rose of Mourvedre defied expectations and came closer to embodying the virtues of its Bandol namesake - Lulu Tempier - than any domestic rose of my acquaintance. 2014 is a triumphant return to the crunchy, tart, silky, mineral, and saline Mourvedre-forward profile that resonates with lovers of serious Provencal rose. Brilliant, brambly berry aromas bleed onto the elegant, palate of tart cherry, seedy raspberry, floral blossoms, saline stones, and long, crunchy quartzite finish. Ripe, yet subtle and vinous. Even though rose season has just begun, I am sure this is one of the roses of the year! Ariana Rolich

Terres Promises 2013 Coteaux Varois en Provence L'Apostrophe Rosé

A delightful rosé from Jean-Christophe Comor! L’Apostrophe is a classic Provencal blend of Grenache, Carignan, and Cinsault from 25-year-old vines planted on terraces of broken down limestone which gives this wine a striking minerality. The grapes are then fermented with indigenous yeasts before being bottled lightly filtered. Ripe peach, apricot, and red raspberry are balanced by orange blossom and spice. With nice weight on the palate, and terrific structure, this is more than simply a quaffing rosé. Pair with grilled meats and vegetables for a fantastic summertime BBQ. Tim Gagnon

Clos Cibonne- Le Pradet 2013 Côtes de Provence Tibouren Rosé

Bridget Roux and her husband, Claude Deforge, took over this estate in the late 1990s after nearly two decades of having no focus or direction in regards to winemaking. They quickly renovated and restored the failing winery and began making wines that hearken to the estate’s former glory. The vineyards cover 15 hectares surrounded by hillsides only 800 meters from the Mediterranean Sea. This cuvee is made from 90% Tibouren, an ancient indigenous varietal of Provence, and 10% Grenache which ferments in stainless steel before being aged in 100-year-old, 500 liter foudres under a thin layer of yeast for one year. The wine shows orange peel, red raspberry, white pepper, thyme, and cherry on the nose with delicate notes of pear and apricot. On the palate it is fresh and lively with minerals, cherry, and pear. It is very structured and would be perfect alongside grilled chicken, curry, or great on its own. Tim Gagnon

Clos Cibonne- Le Pradet 2013 Côtes de Provence Cuvée des Vignettes

This wine is made from Clos Cibonne’s oldest Tibouren vines, all of them older than 60 years old. On the nose it has deep aromas of apricot, garrigue, baked cherries, and exotic hints of guava. On the palate it has nice weight and a vigorous acidity, balanced by fresh strawberry and apricot. With fantastic tannic structure, this would do well paired with grilled fish, bouillabaisse, or roasted lamb. Tim Gagnon

Hauvette 2013 Les Baux de Provence Petra Rosé

The best growers exhibit a fastidious attention to detail. Dominique Hauvette is a classic example. Certainly one of the finest and most complex rosés from the south of France, the 2013 Petra shows a beautiful copper pink hue and lovely aromas of fresh raspberries, kirsch cherries, wild strawberries, rosemary, and sage. The palate is medium bodied and dry with hints of tart cherries, and watermelon to a black licorice finish. A perfect pairing with buttered shrimp or caramelized, slow roasted pork.

Mas Jullien 2014 Coteaux du Languedoc Rosé

Vineyard and cellar work are meticulous at Mas Jullien and the wines show incredible character. They reflect the wildness of the region and more than display Jullien's talent as a shepherd of the vine. This wine offers notes of strawberry smashed in earth, complex aromas of orange rind and fennel seed. The palate is creamy and silken textured without the alcoholic heat often found in rosés from the Languedoc. The fruit is deep and ripe, with a spiciness that will marry well with any grilled meats. Fabulous with seared tuna. A serious wine for elegant summer dining.

Ferme Saint-Martin 2013 Côtes du Ventoux Rosé d'Entrevon

A lovely rosé of Syrah, Grenache and Cinsault grown in the Ventoux, really outstanding in the 2013 vintage. Pretty red fruit aromas, light red-currant fruit on the palate with good length. With aeration this really gets serious, with cherry fruit that is deep and long. A pure and delicious food-friendly wine, with minimal sulfur. Did we say it's a great value? As of March 2015 this wine is even better with lovely deep red currant/cherry fruit...Delicious!

Clos du Joncuas 2013 Gigondas Rosé

This is a beautiful Gigondas Rosé from our organic friends at Clos du Joncuas. Pretty bright pink color, aromas of red currant, blood orange, peach skin and rose. Full palate with creamy red fruits and firm acidity. Long finish with tart cherry, peach, earth and citrusy acids. Not a light wine, at 14.5% alcohol, and still young – it should open up nicely over the next two years. It's delicious now and very food-friendly – serve with grilled fish and white meats, salade Nicoise, vegetarian dishes and Provençal foods. Arrives approximately April 22nd.

Burlotto 2013 Rosato "Elatis"

We certainly love southern France’s refreshing rosés for the summer: light, crisp easy-drinking wines that pair beautifully with carefree warm weather months, but rosati from across the border in Italy are fantastic with fuller bodied dishes and make for great drinking well into the fall. One of our favorite examples is the delicious Elatis from Barolo producer Burlotto located in the municipality of Verduno. Here wines have a pronounced rustic character often heightened by the local star grape Pelaverga which takes a seat between Nebbiolo and Barbara in the blend for this wine. Enjoy the raspberry and stone flavors with tuna, salmon or the traditional pastas of the Langhe.  JR (Last of stock)

Collebello 2013 Cerasuolo di Abruzzo Giusi

Collebello’s estate is called Terraviva, or “the land that lives.” A fitting name for this certified organic vineyard where the grapes are hand-harvested, unsulfured and fermented with native yeasts. The vines are planted in the sand and clay hills of Tortoreto, a site in the northern Abruzzo region that overlooks the turquoise waters of the Adriatic. Made from 100% Montepulciano, this Cerasuolo (rose) is deep pink with ripe black cherry, violet and lavender aromas that are superbly intense.  Light bodied and firmly structured, enjoy the blackcurrant and raspberry flavors with savory carved lamb or slow roasted pork at your next open-air festa!
