Who is the monkey riding that giant fish? Come ask Mike the meaning behind his cryptic label.

Dine With Michael Dashe: In-Store Tasting and Dinner

Share

We are long time admirers of Michael Dashe. He’s a sweet tempered winemaker whose excitement about fermentation and all things wine is incredibly infectious. Michael and his wife/co-winemaker Anne created Dashe Cellars in 1996 as a project to focus on northern California’s steep, cool climate vineyards. Michael has worked in some of the world’s most technologically advanced cellars (he’s spent time at Cloudy Bay in New Zealand, Lafite Rothschild in Bordeaux, and at Ridge in California,) but the wines made under his label are a testament to Lo Fi winemaking: organic or sustainable vineyards, native yeast fermentations, and judicious use of oak.

Dashe’s wines match his personality. They are a refreshing take on grapes such as Zinfandel or Grenache that carry a reputation of being overly alcoholic or obtusely fruited. Michael and Anne are almost always the first to harvest the vineyards that they work in giving fruit with more acid and less sugar than their neighbors. We are pleased to offer an evening with Michael and his fantastic wines. First, there will be a tasting at the store, and then at 7:00PM a small group will share a table and seven wines with him and enjoy a four-course meal prepared by the talented Chef Duca at Racines New York, 94 Chambers Street. Please don’t miss this great opportunity! John Rankin

Dashe 2014 Potter Valley McFadden Farms Dry Riesling

Organic, bright, dry, chalky, Riesling from mountain slopes in California’s Mendocino county – what’s not to like? The 2014 Riesling has a mineral richness that I don’t usually associate with the west coast, but white wines from winemakers like Steve Edmunds and Michael Dashe have provided me with liquid evidence that I should reevaluate my biases. Dashe, Mike 2014 Todd Brothers Ranch Zinfandel Rose

Mike Dashe channels the essence of Zinfandel in this rose from the 50 year-old vines planted on steep, red rock soils of Todd Brothers Vineyard in Alexander Valley. Complex, spicy aromas of coriander, cinnamon, rose petals, and red berries continue onto the palate of rich strawberry, tamarind, herbal hibiscus, and fleshy cherry fruit. Smoked fish, pastrami, garlicky short ribs, and roasted vegetables have met their refreshing match! Red wine drinkers will appreciate this style of rose with dishes that typically call for whites: salmon, salads, pestos, and carbonara. Substantial and sultry. Ariana Rolich

Dashe 2014 Mendocino Heart Arrow Ranch L'Enfant Terrible Zinfandel

The “Les Enfants Terribles” series from Michael could be described as a lighter shade of California. The wine ferments with the yeast present on the grape, and S02 levels are consciously kept to a minimum creating a wine with bright plum fruit reminiscent of one of Beaujolais’ more savory Crus. The Zinfandel in this wine hails from a biodynamic farm that incorporates livestock and other farm crops resulting in grapes grown with a deep respect for Medocino’s terroir. It’s hard to imagine a more gulp-able wine for summertime barbecues and picnics, but don’t forget to stick it in the ice bucket for a quick chill. John Rankin
