Chambers Street is proud to host one of our favorite winemakers, Jo Landron of Domaine de la Louvetrie, pouring new arrivals from this wonderful estate, Saturday, June 6th, from 4 till 7:00. Turning towards organic farming in the late 1980s, the entire estate is now certified organic and Biodynamic and produces a variety of superb and affordable wines on the unique terroirs of Muscadet. Along with his friend Guy Bossard of Domaine de L'Ecu, Jo has been an inspiration to others in the region and has led a dramatic resurgence of quality in Muscadet. His Cuvée Amphibolite Nature is found on wine-lists throughout the world as this light, delicate and very mineral-infused wine is recognized as one of the greatest pairings for oysters and shellfish to be found anywhere.

Our favoirite wine from Jo is the Muscadet Sèvre et Maine "le Fief du Breil," coming from a 6 hectare vineyard (pictured), formerly a baronial estate surrounded by walls and forests, situated on a south-facing slope above the Sèvre river. The soil is clay and silica with quartz stones on a subsoil of orthogneiss. The vines average about 45 years of age and are pruned for very low yields. The harvest is by hand with a careful selection in the vineyard, followed by a slow wild-yeast fermentation and 18 to 24 months aging sur-lies. The quantity produced in 2012 was very small but of superb quality with subtle very complex aromas and terrific density and length on the very saline, mineral palate. The wine showed beautifully when tasted last winter in France, but will be best after 10 to 20 years in the cellar. Availability of this lovely wine is very limited so don't delay...

Please join Monsieur Landron for a dinner and tasting at Racines NY on Monday, June 8th at 7:00pm. We'll taste all the new releases from Domaine de la Louvetrie, including the wonderful 2012 Fief du Breil and library releases of this wine from 2004 and 2007. We'll start with oysters, of course, and Chef Frédéric Duca will create a superb seafood menu to complement these delicious wines. $125 per person includes dinner, tax, tip and wine. (A few seats remain for our Tuesday June 9th dinner with Ariana Rolich, featuring a vertical tasting of the superb Chateauneuf-du-Papes of Pierre André and Gigondas from Clos du Joncuas - two of the most traditional organic and biodynamic estates of the southern Rhone)

Louvetrie (Jo Landron) 2014 Muscadet Sèvre et Maine Cuvee Domaine

The vineyards for the Cuvée Domaine are situated on a high plateau with varied soils of sandy clay with amphibolite stones or quartz with subsoils mostly of gneiss, certified organic, with Biodynamic methods. This Spring bottling received 6 months of sur-lie aging and shows the good weather of the late summer and fall of 2014, somewhat in the style of 2004. Quite dense with flavors of citrus and white fruits this is a great version of Jo's basic cuvée with excellent minerality as well. This will accompany shellfish, sushi and mild fish dishes and is full and round enough to enjoy on it's own, or with chicken and other light meals. It's a sensational value!

Louvetrie 2014 Muscadet Amphibolite Nature

Amphibolite - a metamorphic stone generally formed from gabbro or basalt, with a high concentration of iron and magnesium, prevalent in the vineyard, over a bedrock of gneiss. The wine from this vineyard, never chaptalized, is low in alcohol (normally about 11%) and high in acidity and mineral salts. Bottled after 4 months sur-lie aging and retaining a bit of CO2 from the fermentation, the Cuvée Amphibolite is refreshing, stimulating and a perfect complement to shellfish and light seafood dishes. In 2014 the wine is superb, with aromas of citrus peel, quince, pear and stone with a bit more density and alcohol than normal. Enjoy over the next one to two years.

Louvetrie (Jo Landron) 2013 Muscadet Sèvre et Maine Les Houx

From Jo Landron, one of the heroes of organic wine-making in the Loire Valley, the Domaine Louvetrie "Les Houx" (formerly labeled "Hermine D'Or") is from a great parcel of shallow sandy clay soils, rich with silica, quartz and iron, over a bedrock of gneiss and clay. It's a great terroir for Muscadet that always gives a dense, complex wine which benefits from medium-term aging. Harvested by hand and fermented with wild yeasts, the wine ages "sur-lie" for 12 months before bottling. A more austere and earthy wine than the riper 2012, the 2013 Les Houx shows aromas of stone and saline minerals with hints of citrus, almond and dried pear. The palate gains weight with aeration with the white fruits, citrus, anise and stone flavors backed by very firm acidity. A great success for this vintage, especially for those who appreciate a wine that is more mineral than fruit.  A great value!

Louvetrie 2012 Muscadet Sèvre et Maine Le Fief du Breil

Jo Landron's Fief du Breil is from a beautiful walled vineyard sloping towards the Sevre, with clay, sand and quartz stones over a bedrock of orthogneiss. The vines average 40 to 50 years of age, the vineyard is certified organic and biodynamic and gives very low yields. Always one of my favorite Muscadets, the 2012 is sensational with lemon peel, pear and lime-flower aromas with a bit of smoke and sea-salt. The palate is dense with flavors of wet stone, citrus, white fruits. almond and bitter melon. Very long with fabulous saline acidity. Perhaps best in ten to fifteen years, it will provide exhilarating early drinking and will be very interesting in 20 years as well.
