An "Imperial", or 6 liter bottle of 1979 Chateau Gruaud Larose. The label and capsule show what can happen in humid cellar; the wine in the bottle should be spectacular.

This is the first part of a cellar of fine old European wines (along with some interesting American wines).  The wines were bought on release and also at Christie’s auctions in the mid 1990’s, when Christie’s was the market leader and the team there set a very high standard for due diligence, inspecting every cellar in person, tasting a wide range of  bottles, and turning away almost as much wine as was accepted for sale (the rejected wines usually showed up at the competition). The wines were bought with no intention of selling in the future, and this explains in part why the owner didn’t worry about high levels of humidity in the cellar: just fine for wine, very hard on wine labels – we’ve tried to note when the labels have particularly suffered. Taken as a whole you can see that the owner loves wine, and while he’s far from an oligarch, he’s been able to indulge a passion for great traditional bottles of Bordeaux, Burgundy, and other classics. He also happens to be a good friend of Chambers Street Wines, and we’ve been the frequent beneficiary of his almost insane generosity. Thus we’ve tasted far more than a few samples from this cellar, and we know first-hand that it’s a spectacular collection. Jamie Wolff

La Lagune 1983 Haut Médoc

Nice solid fresh garnet red, turning to brick on the rim. Fragrant mature bouquet of cedar, cassis, wet stone, sweet dark fruits. Medium to full bodied with good lively rich fruit, and tangy iron and gravel minerality on the mid-palate, with good length and finish. Mature and rich and smooth and ready to drink – a delightful ready-to-go 30 year old Bordeaux in the middle of its plateau of drinkability.

This is a beautiful wine that we've been lucky to taste several times - ample evidence that La Mission can be just as good as any Premier Cru. Jamie Wolff

Leoville Las Cases 1983 St Julien

This is the greatest chateau in Saint Julien, it is located right next to Chateau Latour.  There is a little creek that runs between the two properties, one side is in Saint Julien and the other side is Pauillac.  This is a very rich mature bottle of Bordeaux and it is drinking great now.  It is made from approximately 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 12% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot.  A great 1983 and a great Leoville las Cases.
