Wines of Nature from Christian Ducroux and Roland Pignard!

Share

Chambers Street is honored to work with Christian Ducroux who produces vibrant, delicious "wines of nature" from his four hectares of living soils in Thulon, above Regnié-Durette in the Beaujolais. As with Didier Barrouillet at Clos Roche Blanche, Christian's attention is primarily on the health of his soils, the most important factor in producing true wines of terroir. To this end, Christian works only with horses and a bull to avoid compacting the soil. The timing and types of plowing are carefully planned to maintain the correct levels of water and nutrition. He avoids the "organic" treatment copper-sulfate which can be harmfull to the life of the soil and in 2014 Christian used none, relying on natural methods such as fenugrec, biodynamic preparations, herbal infusions and silica to combat mildew and oidium. Fruit trees alternate with each 5 rows of vines, planted at 10,000 vines per hectare, hedges surround the parcels and wild grasses grow throughout - Christian's vineyards are a glorious oasis of green, even in winter, surrounded by the herbicided, eroded hillsides of conventional farming. Picking is done in several passes with a careful selection in the vineyards, as maturation varies due to the diversity of vegetation in and around the vines. Vinifications here are with wild yeasts, without sulfur added, with usually a pied-de-cuve taken a week or two early from all his parcels. It's hard to communicate the committment and energy at this estate, showing that viticulture can be healthy, almost totally self-sufficient, and beneficial to it's environment while producing vibrant natural wines at the highest levels of artistry. 2014 is an excellent vintage for Domaine Ducroux with both the Exspectatia and Esquisse Rosé showing complex vibrant fruit, refreshing acidity and low alcohol - we urge you to try them! (A note about pricing: Monsieur Ducroux wishes his wines to be affordable to all and is concerned with the ethics and quality of his farming and wines rather than with financial gain, thus his prices remain extremely low and bear no relation to the excellence of his work.)

(From the French label: "Exspectatia: third form of time, that which assures the presence of liberty in the time of creation. Small domaine on pink granit. Cepage Gamay. In order to accompany the vine in it's evolution, the mares Hewan and Kaina take an active part: in plowing favoring the microbial activity and controlling the natural grasses; in the transport of the harvest and in the pulverization of tisanes and preparations of biodynamic agriculture which favor the underlying rhythms of life. Unfiltered wine, without addition of sulfites.")

A short distance away, Christian's friends Joëlle and Roland Pignard produce Biodynamic Regnié, Morgon and Beaujolais-Villages from their four and one-half hectares of steep hillside vineyards above Villié-Morgon. Also preferring to use horse-power in the vineyard, their farming is similar to Ducroux's and vinifications are with wild yeasts with minimal extraction, seeking to emphazise balance and mineral characters in the wines. The Pignards add a tiny amount of SO2 before bottling giving a total sulfur of about 10mg per liter. The wines are remarkably pure and natural - the Regnié in particular, is one of the most "terroir" expressive wines in Beaujolais.

Ducroux 2014 Vin de France Esquisse Rose

Christian Ducroux's unique and delicious "Esquisse" Rosé has arrived! A totally natural wine, made without sulfur-dioxide or other additives or adjustments, the Esquisse is from a high-altitude parcel above Thulon and weighs in at a refreshing 10.5% alcohol. Tasted in early February, the malo was done but not the alcoholic fermentation -  happily the wine finished in beautiful shape, bone dry and scintillating with aromas of white peach and raspberry. The palate shows brisk acidity and earthy mineral flavors, with light berry fruits, white pepper and stone. Christian is making some of the most interesting natural wines in France and his farming is certainly among the finest anywhere. We're proud to offer these exceptional wines at Chambers Street!

Pignard 2012 Morgon 1.5 L

Beaujolais for Thanksgiving? Absolutely, and even better in magnum! We're very proud to have the lovely Morgons of Roland Pignard at Chambers Street. From high-elevation 60 year-old vines on sandy clay over granite in the commune of Saint-Joseph north-west of Villié-Morgon. Biodynamic farming, no SO2 until a minimal dose before bottling, nine-day carbonic-maceration. The Pignard's great vineyard work brought lovely ripeness to their 2012s which are all outstanding - although there is no Regnie in this vintage.of tiny yields. The 2012 "regular" Morgon is simply delicious! Dense dark red color. Lovely Morgon aromas of ripe blackberry and black cherry, really pretty and balanced at 12.5%. The palate shows lovely black fruits, blood orange, earth and spice, blending nicely with earthy acids, quite delicious, with a balanced and very mineral finish. A beautiful Morgon to drink now and over the next five to seven years.

Pignard 2013 Morgon Tradition

Roland and Joëlle Pignard's  Morgon Tradition is grown on clay and silica over granite, aged in small old barriques and bottled with only 10 mg/liter of SO2. The 2013 is another excellent vintage for this wine showing a deep red/black color and lovely ripe aromas of blackberry, strawberry and violets - very perfumed with hints of chocolate and spice. The palate is round and dense with creamy blackberry fruit framed in fine acidity and ample round tannins. This is a gorgeous young Morgon, beautifully balanced at 12.5% alcohol. Enjoy now with steak au poivre or cellar for five to ten years. Highly recommended!
