Domaine Lise et Bertrand Jousset - Beautiful Natural Wines from Montlouis-Sur-Loire!

Share

We are proud to feature new arrivals from Lise and Bertrand Jousset, two of the nicest vignerons we have ever met, who make beautiful wines of nature from their 11 hectares in and around Montlouis-sur-Loir. Primarily working with Chenin Blanc in Montlouis, they also grow Gamay, Grolleau and Chardonnay on parcels in Touraine. The vines are between 30 and 130 years old, with even some franc de pieds! Their approach is simple "we want to make wines that express their character and their origins, in other words 'living wines.' For this we need living soils with great microbial activity and living vineyards with a balanced animal and vegetal life in our parcels. This firmly excludes herbicides that kill the soils, fertilizers that maintain the plant by "feeding-tube" deprived of its natural nourishment and pesticides and fungicides that pollute our environment. And for us, no "cooking" in the cellar! We let our wines make themselves naturally without the use of oenologic products - sometimes a little sulfur and only what's necessary! Fermentations are with wild yeasts, of course - they are the soul of our wines as they transmit their origins, the terroir and the vintage. Our wines age slowly in barrels in a careful exchange with the air - we don't wish to "oak" our wines thus we mix the size and age of barrels in our different cuvées."

Our first shipment from the Joussets includes two wonderful Pétillant Naturels, a Vin de Pays white made with Chenin Blanc and Chardonnay and two beautiful dry Montlouis. All of them possess a wonderful purity and vivacity due to the character transmitted through the living soils of their vineyards and to the Joussets' precise, hand-off vinifications with zero or minmal added sulfur. All of these wines benefit from one to two hours of decanting if drunk now and the Montlouis will age nicely for five to ten years. Lise and Bertrand have a wonderful attitude and sense of humor towards their wines and their role as winemakers - "As a glass with friends or a companion at table, wine is meant to be drunk and shared - it's up to us to make wines for these moments." We urge you to try their delightful wines!

Simply put, this is top-shelf Pét-Nat for a picnic-friendly price. All cellar operations are by gravity, without pumping, the fermentaion is in 3 to 6 year-old barriques of 225 and 400 liters. The wine is vibrant straw yellow and adorned with a fine mousse. The nose reveals aromas of Granny Smith, green plums, and heather honey. A finely chiseled palate is bone-dry with hints of dried pear, apple and anise over a core of saline minerals. This is a thirst-quenching Pet-Nat, made without sulfur, that happens to be a serious and elegant wine that would put many Champagnes to shame...!

Jousset, Lise et Bertrand 2014 Vin de France Exile Blanc

This is a lovely blend of Chenin Blanc and Chardonnay from our friends at Domaine Jousset in Montlouis. Starting with the difficult 2013 vintage, Lise and Bertrand have been purchasing grapes from friends of theirs who also work organically in the vineyard, and the result is the Éxilé! The 2014 bottling shows intriguing aromas of dried pear, apple, citrus, lime-flower, stone and spice, a bit unusual and quite interesting. The palate is round and fresh with white fruits, earth, lemon, caramel and stone with a bit of spice in the long finish. A lovely and versatile natural wine that is a great aperitif and will complement full-flavored fish dishes, chicken and white meats.

Jousset, Lise et Bertrand 2013 Montlouis-sur-Loire Clos Aux Renards - Singulier

We are very proud to offer the beautiful wines of Lise and Bertrand Jousset, whose goal is to make "living wines" from living soils and healthy vines in a balanced environment. All of their wines share a vivacity and natural complexity making them a joy to drink - due to great farming and careful vinifications with minimal intervention and minimal or zero added sulfur.  The 2013 Montlouis "Singulier - Clos aux Renards" is a brilliant dry Montlouis made from 60 to 80 year-old Chenin vines on clay soils called "Aubuis" over Turonian limestone. All cellar functions are by gravity without pumping, fermentation is in two and three year-old 400 and 600 liter barrels.  Best if decanted two hours in advance, the wine shows complex mineral infused aromas of citrus, pear, lime-flower, honey and yeast. The palate is lean and mineral with white fruits, racy citrus flavors and fresh herbs framed in saline acids. Serve this crystalline Montlouis with shellfish, scallops, foie gras, chicken with cream sauce and aged cheeses.
