Rosé, Part Three - Sensational New Arrivals and CSW Exclusives!

Share

We take our rosé selection very seriously at Chambers Street, seeking out wines made primarily with organic and biodynamic farming, vinified naturally with wild yeasts and bottled later after a few months of aging. These wines take longer to produce and many of our favorites are only arriving now, just in time for August heat-waves and beach vacations. But don't be afraid to keep some of these lovely wines for Fall and Winter meals as well, as their beautiful aromas and subtle, mineral-tinged fruit make them great food-wines all year round!

Beaufort, André 2010 Champagne Polisy Rosé Brut

For its striking blood orange/copper color and for its vinous character, Beaufort's 2010 Rosé is one of the most compelling Champagnes on our shelves. 100% Pinot Noir from Beaufort's Polisy vineyards, there are geographic and stylistic similarities to great Rosé des Riceys. Aromas of cherry compote, cinnamon, spearmint, and butterscotch give way to gingerbread and herbal notes. The palate is broad and balanced with a juicy core of cherries, tangerines, and red plums before a lengthy mocha and mulberry finish. One of Beaufort's best rosés to date!  Tasting notes  Jan 2017 "Absolutely super, in the end the wine of the night. Transparent, super light but dense and complex, long and unfolding in waves..." Tissot, Stephane 2015 Cremant du Jura Indigene

A serious crémant made from Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Poulsard, and Trousseau, all fermented with indigenous yeasts. Stéphane uses vin de paille to spark the second fermentation which lasts for several months, allowing complex flavors and textures to develop. With a little aeration, the nose shows honeysuckle, orange zest, and orchard fruit. The palate offers crisp minerality, flavors of tangy citrus, toasted nuts, dried honey, and sea salt on the long finish. Amanda Bowman

Chevrot 2014 Bourgogne Rose 'Sakura'

This Pinot Noir rosé is a blend of the saignée from villages and 1er cru fruit in Maranges, a straight pressing of Hautes Côte de Beaune fruit, and maceration pellicular of fruit from Hautes Côte de Beaune. Pale salmon in color and oh so fresh, the 2014 Sakura from Chevrot is what I desire in a rosé: racy minerality, bright acidity, and vivid fruit. The nose combines fresh strawberry, cherry, and crushed herbs, while the medium-bodied palate features wild strawberry, savory minerality, and a lively, somewhat spicy  finish. Try this perfect summer quaffer with marinated goat cheese, grilled chicken, or a salad made with fresh local greens. -John McIlwain

Gonin 2014 Mondeuse Rose

This is the first time we’ve had the pleasure of drinking Nicolas Gonin’s rosé and we love it! It is a blend of 85% Mondeuse, 10% Pinot Noir, and 5% Gamay planted in soils rich with sandstone. The grapes are allowed to ferment naturally in concrete tanks and are bottled with a minimal amount of S02 making for a fresh and zippy wine that’s sure to quench your thirst! Cranberries, clementine, and ripe black cherries come to mind on the nose along with a more exotic note of guava. On the palate it is dry and lean with minerals, juicy watermelon and an invigorating acidity. At 10% in alcohol, and being an excellent value for a truly well-made wine, we’ll be gulping this all year! Tim Gagnon

Colombière 2014 Fronton Vin Gris

Philippe and Diane Cauvin consistently craft wines of balance and terroir in their small corner of the Fronton AOC just north of Toulouse in Southwest France. Made from direct pressing of 80% Negrette and 20% Gamay in the AOC Fronton, north of Toulouse. The estate has organic certification (Ecocert), has been practicing biodynamic since 2006 and has low yielding vines on gravel/silica soils. Wild yeast fermentation, no chaptalization or acidification, and low sulfur, kept on the lies until bottling. The wine is fresh and fruity with plentiful aromas of strawberry confit, juicy red raspberry, and cranberry. With nice weight on the palate and abundant red berry fruit flavors, this would be great as an aperitif or with classic summer dishes like Niçoise salad, grilled chicken, or tangy goat cheeses! Costes (Domaine des) 2014 Bergerac Rosé

Costes is an old French term for hillsides or slopes, which is very fitting for this hillside vineyard located in Bergerac.  The soil is a favorable combination of stone, sandy clay, and rolled gravel that suit thte primarily Cabernet Franc vines primarily grown on the Domaine des Costes Estate.  Nicole and Jean-Luc Dournel  took over the estate in 1992, overseeing the vineyard through its organic certification and biodynamic practices.  Made from Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, this food friendly rose shows fresh, red berries on the nose followed by wild strawberries, red currant, and a subtle, peppery finish on the palate.  Serve chilled and enjoy with lighter meals all year!

Viñátigo 2014 Tenerife Ycode Daute Isora Listan Negro Rosado

Juan Jesús Méndez and Elena Batista of Viñatigo on Tenerife make this distinct and luscious rosado from Listan Negro, the quintessential Canary Island red grape that we know and love from the crisp and salty rosados of Bermejos on Lanzarote, as well as Frontón de Oro's cool, savory rendition from the heights of Gran Canaria. Viñatigo's version is a gleaming red raspberry color with exuberant aromas of rich berry and cherry fruit with a touch of smoke. The palate is transportative, tingly, and sweet-fruited, with sappy strawberry and herbal black cherries. The fruit is meaty and intense, but flanked by plentiful auxiliary flavors of crunchy sea salt, dried herbs, and ashy volcanic earth, which create great balance. Ariana Rolich

Finca Parera 2014 Penedes Sumoll Ull de Llebre Roig Rosat

The Catalonian appellation of Penedes is famous for sparkling Cava, but is home to some truly exciting still wines as well, both white, red, and rose. The best examples display power without weight, a sort of charge that runs through the relatively light-bodied wines and creates substance. The family of winemaker Ruben Parera owns Penedes' first certified organic cherry orchard, with certified organic, biodynamically farmed vineyards planted alongside. Parera's rosat is fermented with native yeasts and made naturally with minimal SO2 additions. Aromas are exotic, spicy, herbal and flush with floral cherry-raspberry, rosehips, and hibiscus, with flavors of creamy wild cherry and tart red currant, spiked with fresh acidity and anchored by chalky tannins and length. Highly recommended for fans of Castellroig's excellent rosat and as a pairing for paella, grilled fish, carpaccio, and summery beet salads. Ariana Rolich

Maestro Tejero, Alfredo 2014 Vdt Castilla y Leon Amanda Rosado de Lagrima

A few bottles of the long-gone 2014 Amanda Rosado appeared in the cellar - grab one while you can! From Alfredo Maestro, Master of the Duero and fierce advocate for natural winemaking and biodynamic farming, Amanda Rosado de Lagrima is made primarily from a single vineyard of 60 year-old vines of Garnacha Tintorera planted on calcareous clay soils at 850 meters altitude  above the Valle del Botijas in the province of Segovia. Luscious and full relative to its 12% alcohol, and nearly fluorescent garnet in the glass (Garnacha Tintorera is a red-fleshed variety), with racing acidity. Aromas are wild, musky and pure, with kirsch, crushed berries, raspberry blossoms, and rainwater, followed by tart currant, seedy black raspberry, crushed ripe blueberries, and invigorating acidity on the mineral-dense palate. Although technically a rosado, Amanda is a delicious way to trick rosé-averse spouses and fans of chilled red wines. Ariana Rolich

Chartogne-Taillet NV Champagne Brut Le Rosé

Despite being a blend of several different parcels, a substantial portion of the grapes for this 60% Chardonnay- 40% Pinot Noir blend come from the 1.3 acre vineyard of Les Orizeaux in Merfy. Detailed soil analyses of this parcel and of all of Alexandre’s vineyards are beautifully rendered on his website, an informative rarity within Champagne.

Golden peach hues brighten to coppery edged flames for this noticeably dry and structured rosé. The nose hints at tamarillo, red currants, cinnamon sticks, pumpkin spice, and hickory powder. A broad and powerful palate offers yellow plum, rhubarb with a sour cherry finish. This will liven up an array of fatty dishes, but will pair perfectly with a chicken liver pâté. David Salinas

Schloss Gobelsburg 2014 Cistercien Rosé

Summer after summer, the Cistercian rosé is always in contention for being a customers' favorite. With good reason, this pale dry rosé has something for everyone with aromas of rose water, cotton candy, brioche, strawberry jam, and freshly chopped almonds. The palate offers a silkenly round and refreshing opening before transitioning to a mouth-watering red berry mid-palate followed by a zesty and clean tangerine finish. Highly affordable rosés from historic and quality-focused Austrian estates are hard to come by and this is a worthy winner!

Les Fouques 2014 Côtes de Provence La Londe Rosé

The 2014 Rosé La Lande is a beautiful wine and a real rosé of terroir! Made from 70% Cinsault and 10% each of Grenache, Syrah and Vermentino, the 2014 La Londe is a lovely pale pink color with subtle aromas of peach skin, raspberry and rose. The palate is light, balanced and long with red and yellow fruits, citrus, spice and saline mineral flavors. Drinking beautifully now, it will improve over the next year or two and accompany an elegant ceviche, fish or chicken, salads and mild cheeses. Great sipped by itself as well, really delicious and highly recommended! (July 2015) Tasted again in May of 2016, the 2014 La Londe is drinking beautifully in an extremely dry and mineral style, showing elegant hints of fruit and mineral flavors and fabulous depth on the palate that should continue to develop over the next two to three years.

Traginer 2014 Collioure Rosé

This is an unusual Collioure Rosé made by Jean-François Deu at the biodynamic Domaine du Traginer from one-third each Grenache, Mourvèdre and Syrah.  Made with minimal sulfites, the wine is reductive and needs decanting or aeration, then shows opaque onion-skin color, aromas of ripe peach, raspberry, earth and ripe  melon with brown spice. The palate is dense with peach, blood orange, stone and dried herbs, intriguing and very long. The wine deepens nicely with time open—really an itriguing natural rosé that will accompany a fish soup, grilled tuna, chicken and pork dishes. Recommended for lovers of natural wines.

Raffault, Olga 2014 Chinon Rosé

The Olga Raffault Chinon rosé has gotten better and better over the past few years, perhaps it's their move towards organic farming and the fine work of Sylvie Raffault and her husband Eric de la Vigerie. 100% Cabernet Franc, 10-hour maceration and slow fermentation. Lovely bright pink color, hints of raspberry and strawberry fruit, very dry and balanced on the palate with a bit of peach and red berries in the finish with crisp saline acidity. "Particulièrement gouleyant" it says on the label and we couldn't agree more!

Guion 2014 Bourgueil Rosé

(The 2014 Guion rosé is back, the last 5 cases direct from Bourgueil!) 2014 shows plenty of minerality, with stone fruit, a hint of spring strawberries (think more tart, less fruity), tangerine, and spice. This is a very complex dry rosé, showing earthy red fruits and stone flavors that are still developing in its second year. Really tastes of the limestone terroir and the Guion's 50 years of organic farming, with a long finish and ample acidity and freshness. Thanks to Stéphane for another great vintage, and for finally putting his rosé in a clear bottle!

Dashe, Mike 2014 Todd Brothers Ranch Zinfandel Rose

Mike Dashe channels the essence of Zinfandel in this rose from the 50 year-old vines planted on steep, red rock soils of Todd Brothers Vineyard in Alexander Valley. Complex, spicy aromas of coriander, cinnamon, rose petals, and red berries continue onto the palate of rich strawberry, tamarind, herbal hibiscus, and fleshy cherry fruit. Smoked fish, pastrami, garlicky short ribs, and roasted vegetables have met their refreshing match! Red wine drinkers will appreciate this style of rose with dishes that typically call for whites: salmon, salads, pestos, and carbonara. Substantial and sultry. Ariana Rolich

Frank is on a roll, and the 2014 “Rosato” is a testimony to the improved vineyard and cellar practices that have put Cornelissen’s wines in the world’s most exciting natural wine bars and stores. We always eagerly await the Susucaru – it’s a wine that shows a fresh, easy-drinking side of Mount Etna while we await the more serious Munjebel series released in the fall. Nusserhof (Heinrich Mayr) 2013 Südtirol Lagrein Kretzer (Rosato)

Hailing from the Tyrolean encalve of Bolzano, the wines of Nüsserhof are more of a piece with Austria than with Italy. Lagrein is a fairly obscure grape, descendent of Teroldego and related to Pinot Noir and Syrah, that can give fairly aromatic and high-toned wines. Light orange, ruby red in color, the nose shows aromas of cherries in Kirsch, strawberries and cream, candied red currants. The palate shows this wine to closer to a light red with round and weighty tannins, highlighted by red plums, goji berries, rhubarb, and blackberry coulis with a discrete, yet grippy finish. Terre Nere 2014 Etna Rosato

Tenuta Terre Nere, located on the northern slopes of Mt. Etna, is believed to be among the highest vineyards in Italy and Europe. 500,000 years of volcanic eruptions has left the area with ash speckled by black pumice and peppered with abundant volcanic rocks. Marco de Grazia never planned to make a rosé, but his daughter loves pink and painting the cellar pink just wasn’t enough. He says this late-ripening indigenous Nerello Mascalese rosé has “the body of a white and the soul of a red.” With good acidity and smooth tannins, red berries, plums and hints of tarragon, it would be well-matched with fish, poultry, light pastas, prosciutto and cantaloupe, figs, olives and cheese.
