Share

Christophe Foucher makes brilliant natural wines on his 5 hectare estate in Couffy,  on the southern bank of the Cher River, near St. Aignan, just a short distance from our friends at Clos Roche Blanche. Christophe grows Sauvignon Blanc, Menu Pineau, Cabernet Franc, Cot and Gamay, farmed with strict organic methods and vinified without sulfites or other additives. He will stop by Chambers Street on his quick trip to New York on Wednesday evening to pour a selection of his rare and delicious wines. We'll taste 2013 Sauvignon Blanc "Rossignoux," and the 2014 Pet Nat "Bulottes," both of which are currently available, as well as samples of past and upcoming vintages including the extraordinary Menu Pineau Sous Voile "Deux Temps en Temps." Any lover of natural wines should come meet Christophe and taste!

Lunotte (Christophe Foucher) 2013 Vin de France Rossingoux

Warning! This wine is not for everyone, but if you like natural wines that are outrageously delicious, complex and full of character, then you will love the Rossignoux 2013. From vines just east of the Clos Roche Blanche in Touraine. Pale gold color. Intriguing aromas of dried pear, citrus peel, exotic fruit and herbs. The palate is dense with candied pear and apple, citrus, stone and caramel. Very long with saline minerals and firm acidity. Organic farming, no added SO2, Bravo to Christophe Foucher for his superb vineyard work and uncompromising natural vinifications!

Lunotte (Christophe Foucher) 2014 Vin de France La Bulotte

Pet Nat Cabernet Franc from our friend Christophe Foucher at La Lunotte. Lovely deep pink color. Slight reduction then pretty aromas of raspberry and red currant fruit. Lovely fine mousse with floral red and black fruits on the palate with earth and mineral flavors. Quite long with firm acidity. This is an intriguing natural wine that makes you want another taste and then another....

Lunotte (Christophe Foucher) 2011 Vin de France Terra Incognito (Sauvignon)

Christophe Foucher is doing fabulous work on his tiny estate just east of Clos Roche Blanche in Touraine. His "micro-cuvées" have fabulous character and transcend the regional norms thus his wines are always simply Vin de France. Terra Incognito is Sauvignon Blanc from old vines, hand-harvested, fermented and aged for two years in small, old barrels without added sulfur. The resulting wine is extraordinary with intense aromas of lemon peel, dried herbs, bitter melon and lime flower. Dense palate of candied citrus, earth, pear, caramel, stone with a hint of oxidation and strong acidity. Fabulous length. Not for quaffing — this is a wine of contemplation to pair with full flavored fish and chicken dishes and goat cheeses. Highly recommended!

Lunotte (Christophe Foucher) 2013 Vin de Table P'tites Vignes (Gamay)

Pure glou glou! This is Christophe Foucher's fabulous Gamay offering... the wine that got us hooked and convinced us that we had to have the La Lunotte wines on our shelves. 11% abv, with aromas of wild rasberries and pepper on the nose, subtle tart cherry fruit and some serious minerality to boot. It's bright, fresh and extremely easy to drink. Natural wine at its finest!  Eben Lillie

Lunotte (Christophe Foucher) NV Vin de France 2 Temps en Temps

Christophe Foucher's vineyards are on a hill above the Cher river, about a mile east of the Clos Roche Blanche. He produces tiny quantities of distinctive natural wines from Cabernet Franc, Gamay, Sauvignon Blanc and Menu Pineau, including superb "micro-cuvées" that occasionally reach the US at Chambers Street. "2 Temps en Temps" is a fantastic and successful experiment of about 800 bottles—Menu Pineau from 2008 and 2009 fermented and aged "sous-voile" in an old barrel without SO2, bottled in early 2014. Light gold/bronze color. Superb, rather intense aromas of hay, lemon oil, pear, almond and white chocolate. The palate is mineral and saline with citrus, pear and herbal flavors. Fabulous length with dusty stone and citrus in the finish. Just delicious! This is a beautifully intense sous-voile wine that will be perfect with ceviche and shellfish, coq au vin jaune aux morilles, strong cheeses....

Lunotte (Chistophe Foucher) 2010 Vin de France Haut Plessis (Menu Pineau)

This is a superb Menu Pineau, combining density of fruit with the unusual high-acid character of the grape. From very low-yielding vineyards above the Cher river, near St Aignan in Touraine, it's a richer style than those of Puzelat/Tue-Boeuf. Christophe transfers his wines from tank into small barrels as soon as the fermentation is under way, where they stay until bottling by hand without filtration. This wine has the intense dried flower and herbal aromas of Menu Pineau with a ripe, dense palate of citrus and mineral and a long finish. Unique and delicious and highly recommended.
