As part two of our rare and ancient herbal Italian beverages, we have a collection of Vermouths unlike any we have ever seen before. Most of these would have been bottled between 1960 and 1980, thus their herbal blend has had plenty of time to become resolved and harmonious. These vintage bottles were made for the traditional local market, and never destined for the United States. What’s the significance? The 60s and the 70s marked a low point in Vermouth’s esteem by the average American. Cocktails were seen as old fashioned and part of the establishment – far from the hip scene that was unfolding which turned toward more experimental intoxicants. As Vermouth became less important in American cocktails, both the quality and range available Stateside took a dive. Producers in Italy often made an export bottling that was much more neutral than the styles preferred in Europe. Rare, curious, and delicious, this is a unique chance to try a set of well-aged vermouth never available before on this side of the Atlantic. John Rankin
