2014 Peter Lauer Pre-Arrivals!

Share

We’re delighted to offer four, pre-arrival, single-parcel, 2014 wines from Peter Lauer. These wines are some of the most exciting dry to off-dry Rieslings being grown in Germany’s Saar valley. First on deck is the always dry and zippy, Fass 2 Extra Trocken, sourced from south and south-west facing Riesling vines in Neuenberg portion of the Ayler Kupp hillside (pictured above).

Named after and grown from the Unterstenberg portion of the Ayler Kupp, Lauer’s 2014 Unterstenberg  is a dry Riesling with a nuanced and powerful core of minerality that offers an exceptionally long and beautifully savory finish.

Located just above the Unterstenberg, the Stirn portion of the Ayler Kupp has a thin layer of meager topsoil with a high percentage of gray slate. Lauer’s eponymously named Stirn is a deliciously herbal and smoky off-dry Riesling.

Finally, the mid-slope portion of Neuenberg typically yields more opulent and slightly botrytised fruit. Lauer’s Neuenberg always shows great depth and concentration, but remains an off-dry Riesling that tends to be drier and perfectly framed by a thrilling minerality.

Under the guidance of Florian Lauer these wines show greater detail and balance with each new vintage. For their towering and graceful minerality, they deserve a place in every collector’s cellar. For their mouth-wateringly savory and saline qualities, they deserve a second look by all those who dismiss Riesling as cloyingly sweet wines. We’re proud to be among the first to offer these new arrivals from Peter Lauer!

Lauer, Peter 2014 Saar Ayler Kupp Riesling Neuenberg

Sourced from a mid to lower slope parcel of the Ayler Kupp, the Neuenberg tends to be more opulent in style. It shows a beautiful golden yellow in the glass and the nose offers aromas of starfruit, freshly-ground ginger, and caraway seeds. The palate has a certain glycerine quality and a razor-fine minerality that carries touches of lilacs and ripe pineapples to a herbal and saline finish. Truly complex Riesling with great aging potential.

Pale Golden in color, this wine really unfolds with time in the glass. The nose is expressive and complex with aromas of honeysuckle, white peaches, green plums, orange blossoms, and toasted almonds. The palate is finely balanced with a slumbering core of minerality that crescendos in the mid-palate with aromas of green plums, fennel, and tamarind through to a deliciously salty finish.
