Sensational Natural Values from Spain -- Alt Penedès, Sierra de Gredos, Mallorca, and More!*

Share

People often ask us how we decide which wines to stock in the store. Organic farming, biodynamic methods, unique terroirs and growers, and natural winemaking with no additives are the qualities that dominate our list of criteria, store-wide. Perhaps the most impressive, albeit subjective, virtue that we find in many of our favorite everyday wines is elegance and structure that defy their price ranges. Put another way: they taste more expensive than they are! This is the definition of a value.

Founded in 1924 by Josep Mata Capellades and owned and operated to this day by the two generations that have followed him, Recaredo is renowned for intricate, bone dry, long-aged Cavas from Demeter certified biodynamically farmed Xarello vines in the Alt Penedès. Self-described "Xarellists," their expertise in ushering the charisma out of this fascinating, introverted, yet terroir expressive variety is applied to their still white wines as well (and bottled under the Celler Credo label). There are a number of fascinating still wines from Recaredo to come, but for now we are savoring the 2013 vintage of Miranius, which is Xarello (with a bit of Macabeu) - steely, mineral, structured, and improbably complex at $15.99.

Xarello vines and calcareous clay soils at Recaredo (Coster del riu Bitlles, May 2015).

Our selection of wines from the Sierra de Gredos, a wonderland of old vine mountain Garnacha west of Madrid, is disproportionately large (in a good way). Production in the rugged region is tiny and the viticulture heroic, resulting in relatively expensive wines that live up to their price tags. Today, however, we offer three bottlings from the vineyards around San Martin de Valdeigleisias, the easternmost edge of the Gredos and the source of our most enduringly popular Spanish value:  Bernabeleva's Camino de Navaherreros, pure Garnacha from old vines on sandy granitic soils, made in a fresh, lifted, and layered style by winemaker Marc Isart. The Camino is a serious and expressive wine at a very low price with limited production; consequently, it runs out fast and we are left scrambling every spring for replacements for its many addicts. Stock up now and allow it some time to open!

Marc Isart serves up a tank sample of 2014 Camino de Navaherreros (left); old vine Garnacha at Bernabeleva (right).

A pair of 2013s from Bodegas Marañones, down the road in San Martin, more excellent biodynamic values from Loxarel (also in Alt Penedès), an array of autumnal wines from the fabulous Garnacha Blanca grape, along with zero added sulphite wines from 4 Kilos on Mallorca and Barranco Oscuro in the heights of Granada round out the offer. Read more about them below and grab one of each at a great discount. Cheers! Ariana Rolich

Recaredo 2013 Celler Credo Penedès Miranius White Wine

For those of you who have not tasted the Xarello grape outside of sparkling Cavas, Recaredo's Can Credo wines should be your first! Miranius is their (not at all basic) basic still bottling, composed of Demeter certified biodynamic Xarello with a bit of Macabeu, raised in stainless steel with no malolactic fermentation in the 2013 vintage (it wasn't blocked, it just didn't happen). An aromatic burst of apple skins, mandarin orange, waxy chamomile, brine and honey greets the nose; flavors of Asian pear, wild fennel, white pepper, and lime blossom wind through the dense mineral core, framed by gentle tannins, with a hint of rich root vegetable, tea leaf, ginger, and thyme on the finish. Truly elegant wine. Ariana Rolich

Loxarel 2012 Penedès Garnatxa Blanca Brut Nature Reserva

A pleasure and a rarity from Cava master Loxarel: 100% Garnatxa Blanca from certified organic and biodynamically farmed vineyards at 700m altitude in the Alt Penedes. Loxarel's commitment to revealing and heightening the expressions of local varieties is on full display in this zesty, refined sparkler, with 15 months on the lees, dry, rich, golden apple aromas and a complex palate of tangy lemon, spicy apricots, resinous green herbs, almond blossom and lavender, with a hint of sweet smoke and olive oil on the finish. A fine bead makes for a perfect paring anywhere you would reach for a still white wine; we recently found this delightful at lunch with egg tortilla and dark leafy greens. So nice to taste something new! Ariana Rolich

Secastilla 2012 La Miranda Garnacha Blanca

As the weather wavers from warm to crisp, we find ourselves in need of a pure, rich, varietally appropriate Garnacha Blanca. Secastilla's La Miranda fits this bill with flavors of full, musky peach, lemon curd, apple blossoms, and a well-integrated bit of new French oak. Made from organically farmed, 15 year old vines grown on granitic sandy soils at 750 meters altitude in Somontano (Aragon), Miranda offers Autumnal comfort and plenty of freshness with roasted poultry, richer fish dishes, cured meats and cheese, and root vegetables. Marañones, Bodegas 2013 Vinos de Madrid Sierra de Gredos Picarana Blanco

Named after the Picarana bird that haunts the highest hills of San Martin de Valdeiglesias, this is 100% Albillo Real from from 30-70 year old vines planted on four unique, organically farmed, granitic vineyards located between 650 and 850 meters altitude. Aromas of sunny, honeyed golden fruit and flowers lead to a contrasting palate of tart, racy green apple and golden plum fruit laced with lavender, wild flowers, and a long, creamy finish. Herencia Altès 2014 Terra Alta Garnatxa Blanca

One of our best-selling Spanish whites, Herencia's Altes' Garnatxa Blanca comes from old vines planted on the sandy local "Panal" soils over limestone in Catalonia's Terra Alta region. A few hours of maceration on the skins, followed by 2 months on the lees provide texture and depth in this medium-bodied, dry yet juicy crowd-pleaser. White pepper, minerals, and green apple aromas precede mouthwatering flavors of crisp peach, lemon blossom, apricot, and hints of jasmine tea. A refreshing and versatile steal! Ariana Rolich

Venus La Universal 2013 Montsant Dido La Solucio Rosa

I ran into superb vigneron couple Sara Perez and Rene Barbier Jr. last spring at a conference in the Priorat and asked if they were available later in the week. Rene replied excitedly, "Yes, I have something to show you - we made a rosé!" On our last day in Priorat, after a week full of heady, glamorous, Garnachas and dense, ripping Carignan, we drove across the Priorat border to Montsant and the relaxed but very busy bohemian compound where Barbier and Perez raise their family and their wines. “La Solució Rosa” was the main event, bursting with clear, complex aromas of cranberry, currant, and wild herbs, and flavors of juicy ripe red and black raspberries, and rich, chewy wild cherry skins, with silky almond and lemon zests. A serious and sensual pink wine, with Venus la Universal's trademark freshness and intensity, we recommend allowing the wine time to open. Ariana Rolich

Loxarel 2013 Penedès Amaltea Red

Amaltea is the name of a foster mother of Zeus, who suckled him to health in the form of a goat. You may find a similarly life-giving force in this terrific, affordable blend of Cabernet, Tempranillo, and Merlot from Loxarel (Cava experts in the Alt Penedes, who also excel at making still wines).Fresh, juicy cherry and raspberry fruit bursts on top the palate, accompanied by soft, pretty earth, peppery herbs, a hint of rose. The farming at Loxarel is strictly organic (certified) and biodynamic (practicing), which makes the price of this delicious wine all the more compelling. Ariana Rolich

Diego de Lemos 2013 Ribeira Sacra Tinto (Mencia)

Pioneering estate Diego de Lemos was the first in the Ribeira Sacra to be certified organic, a rarity in the region. Their 5 hectares of vines are up to 60 years old, hand-harvested, fermented with native yeasts, and raised in stainless steel. The wine is rustic and evocative, as well as a bit stern, with demure aromas of rosewater, lavender, subtle cherry, and black tea. Dark berries tart plum skins, bitter earth, and dense minerality drive the palate. 500 bottles were produced. This is serious wine. Ariana Rolich

Bernabeleva 2014 Vinos de Madrid Sierra de Gredos Camino de Navaherreros

The vineyards around the town of San Martin de Valdeiglesias (the eastern edge of the Gredos Mountains, just west of Madrid) boast very old Garnacha and Albillo vines in granitic sandy soils, interspersed with intensely fragrant lavender, thyme, and exotic local wild flowers that smell like curry, peaches, and honey. Bernabeleva's Camino de Navaherreros is a fresh and perfumed Garnacha from a blend of organically farmed vineyards at 500-1000 meters. Medium-full with vivacious acidity, and substantial tannins (the 2014 has 60% stem inclusion), herbal raspberry seeds, strawberry, and tea leaves on the nose, and flavors of bold raspberry and blueberry fruit, rosey florals, and abundant minerality. What a wine! Ariana Rolich 2015 Note:

Marañones, Bodegas 2013 Vinos de Madrid Sierra de Gredos Treintamil Maravedies

I don't know how much treintamil maravedi coins amounts to in dollars, but it must be a steal since this is one of the deepest expressions of old vine Garnacha available for under $20! Garnacha from 30-70 year old vines planted on granitic sandy soils at 650-800m altitude, from a blend of parcels around San Martin de Valdeiglesias, the beginning of the Sierra de Gredos zone at the westernmost border of the Vinos de Madrid D.O. Broad, ripe aromas of blue and purple berries, with rich accents of honey and heather; the complex, balanced palate is juicy, peppery, and mineral, with crushed brambly berries grounded by savory earth and herbs, and loads of crunchy granitic soil. 4 Kilos 2014 Mallorca Motor America

Wine geeks and lovers of natural, light bodied wines: meet Motor America! 100% Callet, vinified with no added SO2, from the Balearic Island of Mallorca, where the Romans introduced wine production in 121 BC. Francesc Grimalt and Sergio Caballero of 4 Kilos are renowned for their efforts to revive the native grapes of the island, including Fogoneu and its relative, Callet. Fresh, lightly funky aromas and tart strawberry fruit mingle with hints of soil, fresh herbs, and a sprinkle of pepper. Motor America is a delightful wine to unwind with, served chilled alongside some cured pork products, burgers, chips, and beers. Ariana Rolich

Barranco Oscuro 2012 Andalucia "BO2" Tinto

Tempranillo from some of the highest vineyards in Europe (up to 1368 meters), organically farmed by Manel Valenzuela in the Sierra de la Contaviesa mountains of Granada. The schist and clay speak clearly in this mineral-dense, defined, and delicious natural wine, vinified with no added SO2. Subtle animal, earth, paprika, sea salt, and strawberry aromas; cranberry, red plums, and tart cherry flavors are interlaced with serious minerals, herbs, and soil. I highly recommend this wine.
