New Arrivals and Best Values from France, Under $20!

Share

Among our recent arrivals from France there are many outstanding wines which we have not presented in emails, but which offer fabulous value and distinctive every day drinking at very reasonable prices. These are unique, complex and delicious wines which just happen to be inexpensive. Each one of these wines is produced using conscientious organic or biodynamic farming techniques, the grapes are harvested by hand and fermentations are with wild yeasts.  These growers are more concerned with their soils and the purity and integrity of their wines than with financial gain - we are proud to work with these small estates, whose commitment to organic agriculture and natural winemaking is an inspiration. Presenting high-quality organically produced wines that are affordable to all is important to us at Chambers Street and we hope you will give some of these a try!

Feautured at the end of our list are two of our favorite wines, regardless of price. The Guion Bourgueil Prestige is one of the world's greatest values for your cellar - the 2012 is almost gone and it's a lovely, bright Burgundian-style Bourgueil that will drink well until 2030 and beyond. And of course the Christian Ducroux Vin de France "Expectatia" - one of the most delicious, completely  "natural" wines of France, a product of superb biodynamic farming and masterful vinfication with zero sulfur. Enjoy!

Domaine des Amphores 2013 Saint-Joseph Blanc 'Altitude 300'

Since its inception in 1992, Philippe and Véronique Grenier have practiced organic farming on their tiny estate in Chavannay, in the AOC Saint-Joseph just south of Condrieu. Their 2013 "Altitude 300" is a lovely white Saint-Joseph made from 90% Roussanne and 10% Marsanne. The aromas show the Roussanne, with hay, stone, pear, almond and lime-flower. The palate is round, dense and balanced showing stone, white fruits and dried herbs — really pretty, with saline acidity and white fruits lingering in the finish. This is an outstanding northern Rhone white to drink over the next 5 to 8 years and a superb value!

Domaine des Amphores 2014 IGP des Collines Rhodanniennes Viognier 'Les Iris'

We love Condrieu, but Viognier from other regions can often be cloying and uninteresting. This example from the Grenier family in Chavannay, however, is elegant and outstanding. It comes from Viognier vines just south of the Condrieu AOC, always tended organically, certified since 2002. This is a classy and well-balanced Viognier with aromas of citrus, tropical fruits, pear, apricot, stone and spice. The palate is crisp and bright with stone, pear, citrus and floral notes. The finish is supple and refreshing with cool citrus, exotic fruit and mineral flavors. beautifully balanced and delicious as an apéritif, it will accompany a seafood salad, grilled fish, chicken and mild cheeses. Really lovely and a great value!

Colombière 2012 Fronton Réserve

A fantastic, traditional wine from Philippe and Diane Cauvin! Their Fronton Reserve is a blend of Negrette, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc. Like all of their cuvées, minimal intervention is exercised in the cellar leaving us with delicious, rustic wines worthy of any dinner table. Aromas of blackberry compote, brown sugar, dried flowers, tarragon, and spice rise from the glass, but don’t let this fool you: this is not a jammy wine. The palate brings freshness with bright, brambly berry fruit, cracked white peppercorn, ripe red cherries, and a subtle note of smoked meat and earth. Tim Gagnon

Costes (Domaine des) 2011 Pécharment Cuvée Tradition

When thinking of the Bergerac region of France, high-quality, thirst-quenching wines generally aren't the first things that come to mind. Enter Nicole Dournel of Domaine des Costes, who took over this estate as a tenant farmer in 1992. Her wines are crafted with care using organically farmed grapes and native yeasts to carry out fermentation. This cuvée is made of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Cabernet Sauvignon planted in sandy, stony soils over gravel. The result is a more feminine wine with a bouquet of cherry liqueur, dusty red plum, cassis, pomegranate seeds, and a touch of meaty funk. On the palate it is dusty, earthy, and brambly with bright dark berry fruit and fantastic structure. This would be perfect with roasted pork loin and root vegetables! Tim Gagnon

Costes (Domaine des) 2010 Pécharment Cuvée Domaine

Nicole Dournel’s Cuvée Domaine is a classic blend of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Cabernet Sauvignon that is vinified with native yeasts in tank and then is aged in the traditional large-format barrels of the Bergerac region. Aromas of cherry liqueur, cedar, and a hint of pipe tobacco rise from the glass. On the palate it is fresh with high-toned red raspberry coming forward before retreating, allowing layers of smoke, toasted earth, and dried flowers to take the stage. This is a serious and structured wine that would give any Bordeaux a run for its money, both in quality and in price! Tim Gagnon

2012 is a lovely vintage for the La Grolet "Tete de Cuvee," a blend of old vines, mostly Merlot with Cabernet and Malbec, certified Biodynamic. On the palate there is deep, dark berry fruit brightened by fresh acidity, the finish is long and lovely with juicy red fruits and minerals. Jane et Sylvain 2013 Bourgogne Rouge

Jane et Sylvain: A refreshingly unpretentious name for a small organic estate in Gevrey-Chambertin. Their Bourgogne Rouge is from young vines in a parcel that has never been chemically treated and always tended organically. Lovely red/black color. This needs about an hour open, then shows ripe cherry and blackberry fruit with violet and citrus, quite elegant. The palate shows juicy cherry and blackberry over chalky mineral flavors and firm acidity. This is a lovely Pinot Noir of terroir at a great price - it's delicious now and will improve with a few years in the bottle. 12.5% alcohol, certified organic.

Laguerre 2012 Côtes du Roussillon Le Ciste Blanc

Eric Laguerre's "Le Ciste," (named after a flowering bush in and around his vineyards) is certainly one of the most distinctive whites of the Roussillon. Grown in Eric's high-elevation vineyards on acidic soils of decomposed granite, the wine is made from Marsanne, Roussanne, Rolle (Vermentino), Grenache Blanc and Maccabeu. Yields are about 20 Hl/Ha, harvesting is by hand in small baskets, fermentation (wild yeasts) and aging is in small barrels. Complex aromas of lemon oil, thyme, hay and white fruits—a lovely melange with contributions from each variety. The plate is dense, stony and saline with herbal, citrus and white fruit flavors. The finish is long with mineral acids. Complex and distinctive as a young wine, this will be best with a few years of cellaring. Really a Grand Cru of the Roussillon and a great value! DL

Laguerre 2013 Côtes du Roussillon Le Passage

Eric Laguerre’s Le Passage is a blend of Carignan, Grenache Noir, and Syrah from vines planted in sandy granitic soils planted at 500m in elevation at the foot of the Pyrenees Mountains in the Rousillon AOC of southern France. Flora and fauna abound in this wild, rugged region with cover crops between the rows; plowing, natural compost, and tea treatments are used to control pests to not disturb the natural ecosystem. Eric is a proponent of biodynamic viticulture, scheduling winter pruning and other vineyard work around any one of the six moon cycles of the year. In the cellar he works very naturally, only adding a touch of sulfur at bottling (save for his Le Col des Buis cuvée which is made without sulfur). Le Passage spends eight months in neutral oak barrel, helping to soften the wine. The nose is wild and enticing with red and black berry fruit, watermelon, bacon fat, and tangerine. There is a deeper aroma of fresh mountain herbs as well. The palate is delightfully less structured than his other cuvées, which makes it perfect for drinking now and it shows bright, lifted fruit on the palate with dark plums and a hint of cracked pepper leading into a savory, berry-soaked finish: simply delicious. Lapuyade 2013 Jurançon Sec (Petit & Gros Manseng)

Clos Marie-Louise/Château Lapuyade is a beautiful biodynamic estate deep in the hills of Jurançon, south of Pau. Their wines are harvested by hand, fermented with wild yeasts and aged in old barrels purchased from Yquem and Haut-Brion. Chateau Lapuyade produces a complex, ripe, exotic style of "Sec" and the lovely 2013 is no exception. Pale gold color; ripe aromas of exotic fruit, citrus, butterscotch, honeysuckle and hay; the palate is ripe and round with pear, grapefruit spice and mineral flavors; very bright citrusy acidity in the finish with hay and minerals. This will evolve nicely re-corked in your fridge or with five to ten years of cellaring. Not for everyone perhaps, but this is really a unique and intense bottle of Jurancon! Serve with chicken or fish in sauce, full-flavored cheeses, patés and Asian foods.

Navarre 2013 Saint-Chinian Cuvée Olivier

The new release of Thierry Navarre’s Cuvée Olivier is one of my favorites so far! 2013 was a standout vintage in the Languedoc producing wines of precision and depth that maintain freshness not often found this far south. Cuvée Olivier is a blend of Carignan, Grenache, and Syrah from Thierry’s 12-hectare practicing organic estate situated in the AOC of Saint-Chinian and the vines are planted in brown schist soils that give density to the finished wine. On the nose it is deep and complex with dusty dark plum, boysenberry, pink peppercorn, sage, lemon oil, and clementine zest. It is also a touch resinous with a hint of watermelon. The palate is poised and structured, leaning towards more smoky and mineral flavors but is balanced by fresh fruit. Blackberries, citrus, and savory herbs come to mind on the finish that lingers on the palate. On day two the palate is beginning to open up with more fruit redolent of pomegranate seeds and fresh minerals. Truly a great wine and a fantastic value. Tim Gagnon

Rimbert 2013 Saint-Chinian Les Travers de Marceau

We are always huge fans of Jean-Marie Rimbert's wines, and the Travers de Marceau cuvée is a perennial favorite among the staff. It is a pure and juicy expression of high-altitude Carignan, Mourvèdre, Syrah, and Cinsault grown in schist-laden soils, due in part to its being fermented and aged in concrete vats, the rest due to Jean-Marie's use of wild yeasts for fermentation and his minimal doses of SO2. On the nose there are vivid aromas of plump wild blackberry, dark plum, turned earth, and savory herbs. The palate is lighter bodied and lifted with lip-smacking cherry and plum flavors and a touch of smoke. There is a fair amount of grip here making it incredibly food-friendly, and it is equally great on its own for the upcoming winter months! Tim Gagnon

Pépière 2014 Muscadet Sèvre et Maine Les Gras Moutons

(Muscadet is one of the world's greatest fish wines - serve Pépière's Gras Mouton with oysters, cod, flounder, fluke or scallops) Another wonderful 2014 Muscadet from Marc Ollivier and Remi Branger! Gras Moutons is a great parcel on gneiss with clay and amphibolite stones, giving a rounder, more aromatic wine than Pepiere's granite terroirs. The 2014 is outstanding - harvested a bit later than usual in this vintage of great weather at the end of the season.  Lovely aromas of lemon oil, pear, white pepper and stone. The palate is a bit rounder than the 2012 and 2013, and deep with white fruits, citrus, hay and anise, with bright, refreshing acidity and a nice mineral kick in the finish. Open enough to enjoy now, this beautifully balanced wine should age nicely for 6 to 10 years. Highly recommended and a great value!

Parentière 2013 Muscadet Sèvre et Maine Vieilles Vignes

Michel and Guilhaume Ménager produce this lovely Muscadet on their tiny estate near Vallet, which they have tended organically for more than 30 years. The sub-soil is gabbro, a type of basalt, that gives a unique aromatic quality to the wine, quite different from wines produced on the normal granite or gneiss/schiste soils of Muscadet. (They also produce a variety of organic vegetables) The Ménagers have always harvested by hand and never chaptalize, producing wines that are light, refreshing and very "mineral" in character. The 2013 Vieilles Vignes is a special cuvée bottled after 18 months on the lees. Aromas of pear, citrus, thyme and anise with the musty, stony hints typical of Muscadet from gabbro soils. The palate is dense with dried pear, stone, licorice and lemon peel. 11.4% alcohol. Don't be put-off by the low price - this is a complex and delicious Muscadet really showing the terroir - drink now or in five to ten years. Bravo to Michel & Guillaume Ménager.
