German Prädikatswein

Share

From the noticeably sweet to the nearly dry, the following wines show some of the stylistic range that's possible within German Prädikatswein. We've opened several sample bottles and found that newer vintages are showing great promise. Among the older, private cellar collection bottles, the corks and the wines within are absolutely pristine. There are some real gems and great values. Enjoy!

Von Racknitz 2011 Nahe Riesling Niederhäuser Klamm Spätlese

While I love dry German Riesling and am constantly evangelizing about its virtues, I still love wines with some sweetness more than most Germans and perhaps more than the proprietors of Von Racknitz themselves. That's most likely why this was the first wine I tasted at the estate that got three stars in my notebook (out of a max of three -- it's not a particularly precise system, I admit). As excited as I was by it, the note is somewhat brusque: "Very ripe aromas; concentrated peach and herbs. A lot of depth. Like the sun exploding in my mouth. So succulent. Exceptional!" The vines are over 60 years old, the wines are fermented spontaneously in stainless steel, the yields are absurdly low (30 hl/ha) and it's just an outright delicious, lip-smacking Spätlese. -jfr

Adam, A.J. 2013 Mosel Riesling Dhroner Hofberg Spätlese

Lightly golden in color, Adams' 2013 Hofberg Spätlese unfolds with aromas of baked apples, shortbread, cinnamon, and a touch of petrol. The palate is nothing short of massive with breath and weight that feel like they could go on forever. Honeyed and cinnamon tones are present in this mouth-transporting Spätlese!

Adam, A.J. 2014 Mosel Riesling Dhroner Hofberg Kabinett

Lightly golden in color, Adams' 2014 Hofberg Kabinett has expressive nose of buttery pastries, candied honeydew, and a hint of petrol. The palate is weighty and on the fuller-bodied side for a Kabinett, but remaines underlined by a zippy minerality with brooding glycerin edges that carry notes of lemon custard and honey on to a fine finish.

Adam, A.J. 2014 Mosel Riesling Dhroner Hofberg Kabinett 1.5 L

In 2000, Andreas Adam took on the noble task of revitalizing his family’s vineyards in Dhron, a small town located on the Mosel tributary of the same name. The slopes are south-facing with a cooler microclimate and a mix of weathered Devonian slate, iron oxide, and clay. This wine is a stunner! Very floral and aromatic, the palate is fresh and salty, with tart, malic vibes and more stone fruit than on the nose. Buying this magnum means you have a great time in your future, drink now or hold. Cari B

Biffar, Josef 2001 Pfalz Wachenheimer Altenburg Riesling Spätlese

Medium golden in color, this late harvest Riesling offers aromas of clover honey, lilacs, white pepper, star anise and a hint of petrol. On the palate, time has pared down the original sweetness, so that this is light, lifted and shows a mouthwatering minerality that carries grapefruit and saline tones. Definitely on the drier side for a finely aged Spätlese.

Ehrhard, Carl 2001 Rheingau Rüdesheimer Berg Rottland Ries Auslese Feinherb

Auslese Feinherb isn't something you see every day, but in the ripe, balanced vintage of 2001, it's a style that worked exceptionally well. This is a late release from the cellar of the near-organic Ehrhard estate and we were mightily impressed when we tasted it recently. Not too sweet, yet charmingly honeyed and zippy. Starting to show some mature character, but this will continue to evolve for decades. -jfr

Grans-Fassian 2004 Mosel Trittenheimer Apotheke Riesling Auslese 375ml

This split packs quite a punch, beginning with aromas of petrol, salt brine, lilacs, and nutmeg. The palate is rich and textured with candied lemons and lemon custard with an admirably long finish. An elegant coda to any meal! - David Salinas

Karlsmühle 2001 Ruwer Kaseler Nies'Chen Riesling Spätlese

At a recent staff tasting of several private cellar bottles this was a real standout and an amazing value! Faded golden in color, the nose offers aromas of star anise, pink peppercorn, white flowers, and butterscotch. The palate is high-toned with a riveting minerality that parades aromas of kiwi, starfruit, and candied lemons through to a finely tart finish. Complex and delicious!

Schaefer, Willi 2014 Mosel Graacher Domprobst Riesling Kabinett

The 2014 Graacher Domprobst Riesling Kabinett shows a remarkably distinctive nose with aromas of delicate orange blossom, candied ginger, spearmint, green tea, and pine. The palate has impeccably razor sharp minerality that carries notes of oolong tea and shortbread through to a finely pointed finish. Stunningly wrought and filigreed to the nth degree.

Schaefer, Willi 2014 Mosel Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Kabinett

Schaefer's 2014 Graacher Himmelreich does not disappoint and although it's currently delightful; it has tremendous aging potential. The nose reveals itself in stages of peppermint, cardamom, cinnamon, petrol, and smoky tones. The palate is lifted by a resplendent core of minerality that shows incredible length and finesse with filaments carrying notes of tart lemon sorbet and cotton candy. Masterful and sublime Riesling Kabinett!
