Pinon, François 2014 Vouvray Brut

From a plot of very old Chenin Blanc vines, François' Brut NV is kept on the lees for 18 months before bottling. It has pretty apple, pear, floral and toasty flavors with good acidity balancing the fruit. The current cuvée is from 2014 and it's one of their best ever - a bit riper than usual with round but well defined fruit—a great alternative to Champagne, it's delicious as an apéritif before the meal or afterwards with apple pie. This is a great choice during the holidays - a real crowd-pleaser at a great price, before, after or during the meal!

Pépière 2014 Muscadet Sèvre et Maine Sur Lie

(Tasted twice before bottling last winter) 2014 seems like 2004, says Marc Ollivier, with very good concentration and ripeness, and very good acidity. A very difficult Spring and Summer (with many nervous vignerons) were followed by six weeks of excellent, sunny weather beginning in mid-August. It may not be the vintage of the century, but many delicious wines were made throughout the Loire Valley, and in good quantity. Domaine de la Pépière's Muscadet Sèvre et Maine sur Lie is an outstanding wine that will drink beautifully this summer. Showing a bit more fruit than usual with aromas of dried  pear, apple, citrus peel, white pepper and stone. The palate is round (for a Muscadet) but more stone than fruit, with citrus, anise and saline mineral flavors, ending with firm, refreshing acidity. Simply delicious and a sensational value with the stronger dollar!

Pépière 2014 Muscadet Sèvre et Maine Clos des Briords

Last of Stock! (From three hectares of old vines on granite of Chateau Thébaud with well-drained soils of clay, sand and gravel. Hand harvested, transported in small baskets, cellar functions by gravity, no pumping, wild-yeast fermentation, seven months aging on the lees.) A classic Clos des Briords from this excellent vintage in the Loire - a season that started poorly but was saved by good weather from mid-August through September. The aromas show more white fruits than usual in this ripe vintage with herbal, mineral, stone and lemon-peel, quite lovely. The palate is dense and creamy with apple/pear fruit, wet stone, saline minerals and citrusy acids. A bit rounder perhaps, than the 2010 and 2012 and wonderful now with oysters, sole, flounder and richer fish dishes as well. From the Domaine: "The Spring was very classic, not too cold, not too warm, and wet as usual. The flowering went well which permitted a nice quantity and quality of grapes. The month of July was sunny but August began like a poor autumn, cold and humid. Late in August we really didn't know what would happen as the risk of rot was very high. Then, after a last big storm around August 24th, dry, warm and sunny weather began which lasted until October. The grapes matured and were of excellent quality with both high sugar and high acidity! We picked the Briords parcel on Monday Sept 15th and Tuesday the 16th in the early part of the harvest. The fermentations went well, lasting approximately a month and a half. I would say that it's a vintage representing what we like in Briords: citrusy vivacity, scintillating material and salinity in the finish."

Pépière 2014 Muscadet Sèvre et Maine Les Gras Moutons

(Muscadet is one of the world's greatest fish wines - serve Pépière's Gras Mouton with oysters, cod, flounder, fluke or scallops) Another wonderful 2014 Muscadet from Marc Ollivier and Remi Branger! Gras Moutons is a great parcel on gneiss with clay and amphibolite stones, giving a rounder, more aromatic wine than Pepiere's granite terroirs. The 2014 is outstanding - harvested a bit later than usual in this vintage of great weather at the end of the season.  Lovely aromas of lemon oil, pear, white pepper and stone. The palate is a bit rounder than the 2012 and 2013, and deep with white fruits, citrus, hay and anise, with bright, refreshing acidity and a nice mineral kick in the finish. Open enough to enjoy now, this beautifully balanced wine should age nicely for 6 to 10 years. Highly recommended and a great value!

Pepiere 2014 Vins de France Cabernet Franc La Pépie

The 2014 Cabernet Franc from Marc Olivier is nothing short of perfection. Year after year it offers a fresh, dangerously drinkable red that is perfect for the summer months. On the nose it is very pretty, bursting with red raspberry, orange peel, white pepper, and rose petal aromas. Even though it is light, juicy, and lifted on the palate, it does have a sturdy mineral backbone and a subtle earthiness to anchor the fruit making it a great candidate to be served slightly chilled at a backyard BBQ. Since it’s a fantastic value, feel free to stock up! Tim Gagnon

Luneau-Papin 2014 Muscadet de Sèvre et Maine Clos des Allées

A lovely vintage for the Clos des Allees, slightly rounder than usual but with the bracing acidity and minerality of good Muscadet. Delicate floral, citrus and pear aromas, and a nice earthy finish...delicious. From old vines on mica-shist soils in Le Landreau.

Luneau-Papin 2012 Muscadet Sevre et Maine Clos des Noelles

The Luneau-Papin "Clos des Noelles" is one of my favorite Muscadets, usually a bit rounder than the granite-soil "L D'Or" but always aromatically complex and with great intensity and length.   The vines were planted in 1936 on a terroir of "micaschistes a deux micas," the grapes are hand-harvested and undergo a slow wild yeast fermentation with 36 months of aging on the lees. The aromas are subtle and complex with dried pear, lemon-oil, dried mushroom, stone, anise, and white pepper. The palate is more round and supple than the L D'Or, dense and very mineral with bitter citrus, white fruits, stone, almond and floral notes. Really a brilliant young Muscadet  that should be decanted, and that will age beautifully.

Luneau-Papin 2007 Muscadet Sevre et Maine Le "L" D'Or

2007 was a very good vintage for this great cuvée from old vines on a terroir of granite with mica-schiste in Vallet. A good choice for any mild-flavored fish or poultry dish, there are pretty citrus, thyme and floral aromas and complex mineral flavors on the palate. While lacking the depth and weight of 2002 and 2009, this is still a lovely wine and the finish opens nicely with a few hours of air, showing intriguing licorice and anise notes. While invigorating to drink now, with crisp acidity, this wine will develop slowly — don't be afraid to put a few in storage, it should be lovely in 15 years.

Closel (Château des Vaults) 2013 Savennières La Jalousie

Evelyn de Pontebriand took over her parents’ estate in 2001 after a long career teaching French literature all over the world. As a lover of all things botanical, it did not take long for her to convert the estate to strictly organic farming and she continues to experiment with different vineyard management techniques in her quest to highlight Savennières austere terroir. Her work in the cellar is very traditional with fermentations occurring naturally with indigenous yeasts and SO2 is used in miniscule doses only if needed. The Chenin Blanc vines from the La Jalousie parcel are 15-20 years old and are planted in sandstone and decomposed quartz schist soils. On the nose it shows classic Savannières aromas of stone fruits, papaya, mango, and waxy citrus fruits. The palate is quite full-bodied and offers luscious tropical fruit anchored by minerals and more juicy citrus. Delicious now, but would be interesting to taste in 5-10 years! Tim Gagnon

Pinon 2014 Vouvray Les Trois Argiles

The 2014 Trois Argiles is a fabulous young Vouvray in the Pinon's preferred Sec-Tendre style showing beautiful aromatics of pear, lemon confit, stone, almond, lime-flower and honey. The palate is deep and ripe with stone and saline minerals, creamy lemon, apple and pear. The wine is dense and very long with superb balance of ripe fruits with very firm acidity. A great Vouvray that is drinking wonderfully now and will be worth revisiting in ten, twenty or thirty years! 12.2%, 15g RS, and 6.2g total acidity.

Pinon 2014 Vouvray Deronnieres

The grapes for this new cuvee from Francois Pinon used to be included in the Silex Noir, but this wonderful vineyard, on a hill-top directly above the Pinon's cave, much deserves to be bottled on it's own. At 18 grams/liter of residual sugar, 12.4% alcohol and strong acidity, the Deronnieres approaches Demi-Sec in style but with superb minerality and balance. The wine shows subtle aromas of lime-flower, dried pear, lemons and stones. The palate is very saline and mineral with bitter lemon, white fruits, and herbal notes with impressive density and length. A great demi-sec with fantastic minerality that will age beautifully!

Matassa 2014 Vin de Pays Cotes Catalan Coume de l'Olla

Those who aren’t familiar with the wines of Tom Lubbe in the Roussillon, take note. Tom, who is originally from New Zealand and grew up in South Africa, started his estate here in the village of Calce in 2003 after working for a winery in South Africa and a 3 –year stint at Domaine Gauby. All work in the mostly 60-120-year-old vines is done without chemicals, and he is certified organic by ECOCERT. Coume de l’Olla is an exotic blend of Grenache Noir, Grenache Gris, and Maccabeu planted in schist and marl soils, fermented whole-cluster with native yeasts in concrete vats. The nose is energetic and intoxicatingly pretty, with bright red flowers, orange pith, red berries, and brown spice. The palate is lithe with more red berries, a touch of pine, ample minerality, and silky tannins. This is a wine of finesse and freshness, and is among my favorites from the Roussillon. It has enough richness to pair with heartier, meaty foods this Thanksgiving for those who opt out of the traditional dishes (think steak, game bird, or wintry stews), but would also be a perfect pairing with turkey. Texier 2012 CdR St. Julien en St. Alban Domaine Pergaud Vieille Serine

"True to the all-around charm of 2012, this is probably the easiest to drink iteration of this wine since we first made it in 2009. From the start, this wine is open and likable, despite the typical density of Vieilles Serines. Its acidity is lower than in previous vintages, so we don’t see it as a wine to age for too long. Aged 18 months in large wood vats (2,500 liters), SO2 adjusted to a total of 20 mg/l at bottling. 4,924 bottles and 120 magnums" - Eric Texier

Foradori 2014 IGT Vignetti delle Dolomiti Fontanasanta Manzoni Bianco

Manzoni Bianco is a cross between Pinot Bianco and Riesling developed by Luigi Manzoni in the 1920 and 30s; it combines the florality and lift of the Riesling grape with the brighter citrus fruit of Pinot Bianco. Elisabetta Foradori farms about 3 hectares of this variety in the iron-rich limestone soils of the Alto-Adige at 400 meters above sea level. One week of skin contact plus a year of aging in acacia casks lends a deep, almost honeyed texture and subtle tannic presence underneath notes of cider, honeysuckle, red apple skins, pear, almond and pineapple. Cotar 2009 Teran Frizzante "Crna" Klasicna Metoda Ekstra Brut

Now this is really exciting stuff! Cotar makes this sparkling Teran (Slovenian for Refosco) with a secondary fermentation in the bottle. Fermentation is kicked-off with unfermented juice from dried grapes and the wine is bottled without dosage or filtration. Cotar’s wine is sort of like an extremely savory Lambrusco, with quite dry raspberry and plum flavors. The wine-maker, Branco, recommends drinking a whole bottle with blue fish, which is easier to do than you may think. We also think that the challenge of matching the diverse menu at Thanksgiving will work out very well with this wine.
