36th Annual Chambers Street Thanksgiving Email!

Share

Recent tragic events in Egypt, Beirut, Paris and elsewhere may not inspire Thanksgiving, but life goes on - let's hope that an appropriate international response will someday put fanatic terrorism in the past.

Thanksgiving — the wine lover's favorite holiday, when sharing our favorite bird-friendly wines with family, friends and neighbors heightens our enjoyment of this most convivial day! And what do we look for in a Thanksgiving wine? A full-bodied white that will not only complement turkey, but stand up to the cranberry sauce, stuffing and onions; rosés (yes, rosés are a great choice on Thanksgiving) that have a bit more fruit and terroir expression than those we gulp in the summer; and reds that are relatively light and low in alcohol, supple with pretty fruit that won't overwhelm the mild flavors of turkey, turnips and mashed potatoes. And of course a sparkling wine or Champagne to begin or end our feast, and dessert wines that will shine with pumpkin, apple and mince pies, walnuts and cheeses.

Our Thanksgiving picks are designed to please everyone at the table, from novice to Master of Wine, and to fit every budget as well. Have fun perusing our list and please call or email with any questions or for further recommendations. (Sorry, it's a bit too long — sparkling wines, followed by roses, reds, lighter to fuller, and  whites. Dessert and liqueurs come tomorrow.) Please Note: Some inventories arrive 11/17.

And while we pause to give thanks for the health and happiness of family and friends, lets think for a moment of those less fortunate than ourselves. One way to do that is by donating to your favorite charity. For CSW that means Partners-in-Health. We'll match our customers total donations to PIH, up to $1,000, made between now and Thanksgiving, just let us know the amount of your gift. https://donate.pih.org/page/contribute/donate

Happy Thanksgiving from everyone at Chambers Street!

Pinon, François 2014 Vouvray Brut

From a plot of very old Chenin Blanc vines, François' Brut NV is kept on the lees for 18 months before bottling. It has pretty apple, pear, floral and toasty flavors with good acidity balancing the fruit. The current cuvée is from 2014 and it's one of their best ever - a bit riper than usual with round but well defined fruit—a great alternative to Champagne, it's delicious as an apéritif before the meal or afterwards with apple pie. This is a great choice during the holidays - a real crowd-pleaser at a great price, before, after or during the meal!

Beaufort, André 2010 Champagne Polisy Rosé Brut

For its striking blood orange/copper color and for its vinous character, Beaufort's 2010 Rosé is one of the most compelling Champagnes on our shelves. 100% Pinot Noir from Beaufort's Polisy vineyards, there are geographic and stylistic similarities to great Rosé des Riceys. Aromas of cherry compote, cinnamon, spearmint, and butterscotch give way to gingerbread and herbal notes. The palate is broad and balanced with a juicy core of cherries, tangerines, and red plums before a lengthy mocha and mulberry finish. One of Beaufort's best rosés to date!  Tasting notes  Jan 2017 "Absolutely super, in the end the wine of the night. Transparent, super light but dense and complex, long and unfolding in waves..." Chevalerie 2012 Bourgueil Chevalerie

We're big fans of the Caslot family at Domane de la Chevalerie, who  make soulful Bourgueils from organic vineyards on their varied terroirs.  The Chevalerie vineyard is on mid-slope Turonian limestone with clay and alluvial sand and gravel topsoils, rich in silex; the vines average about 60 years of age. The lovely 2012 Chevalerie shows vivid aromas of berry liqueurs, bitter chocolate, earth and brown spice. The palate is dense and supple with ripe blackberry, cocoa, earth and mineral flavors balanced by cool acidity. The finish is long and lush with blackberry, prune, citrus and saline minerals. This is a lovely old-school Bourgueil to drink over the next 15 years - delicious now perhaps best from 2020 to 2025.

La Biancara 2014 IGT Veneto Frizzante Garg'n'go

Located in Biancara, an extension of the Soave foothills in Veneto, Angiolino Maule has been working biodynamically for almost twenty years – never using any soil treatments or chemicals. He vinifies without the use of temperature control, sulfur, enzymes or yeast, and he doesn’t fine or filter before bottling. Angiolino’s south facing slopes are volcanic in origin, protected from the whipping Alpine winds, with lots of minerals and clay in the soil. Made from 80% Garganega, with about 20% Durella, the Garg'n'go is a sparkling wine that has an intense minerality with a hint of spice on the nose and the palate. Would be perfect for your Thanksgiving toast or for nibbling before you sit down for the main meal. After the holidays, try it with any kind of shellfish, fried seafood or even white pizza. Domaine La Boheme NV Auvergne 'Festejar' Sparkling Rose

Located in the village of Glaine-Montaigut in Auvergne, the south-easternmost appellation of the Loire Valley, Patrick Bouju of La Bohème farms about 5 hectares of vines, most of which are planted to Gamay and Pinot Noir, though some of them are 120-year-old vines of Gamay d’Auvergne: an ancient indigenous variety. These vines are planted in a mixture of very stony soils at the top of the slope with more dense subsoil further downhill at about 500m in elevation.  Given the fact that Patrick is working organically and practicing minimal intervention in the cellar, he is able to produce healthy grapes that result in fantastically quaffable wines. Festejar is a delightful rosé pet-nat that is bright ruby red in the glass with ripe cranberry, brambly red raspberry, spearmint and a touch of Christmas spice on the nose. There is a faint trace of residual sugar, which would make this an easy-going aperitif on Thanksgiving Day that would still be esoteric enough for the most avid wine consumer. Tim Gagnon

Bordelet 2014 Sparkling Pear Cider Poiré Granit

Eric’s oldest heirloom pear trees (over 300 years old!) have vast roots that tap the soil’s granite deposits for a maximum blast of Norman minerality. As in his other ciders, fermentation continues in the bottle like the world’s finest sparkling wines, but this particular cuvée shows an incredibly refined bead, vinosity, and elegance that we've rarely taste from apples or pears. There’s a bit of residual sugar floating around, but the impressive amount of dry, stony extract makes this bottle just as sophisticated a drink as most Champagnes. Granite is very highly recommended as an example of cider’s potential, and is an annual favorite with holiday feasts.

Gramona 2007 Cava Gran Reserva III Lustros

The Gramona family has been making wine in the town of Sant Sadurní d’Anoia since 1816 and bottling under the family name since 1921. Home to one of the great, deep cellars of Cava county, Gramona does not release wines until they are perfectly mature and ready to drink Silken aromas of golden fruit, hazelnut, orange oil, and fresh yeasty bread. Although totally dry with no dosage, III Lustros displays a ripe palate of tangy ginger, jasmine, almond oil, orange water, and ripe fruit notes of pretty yellow plum and crisp golden apple, with added breadth, complexity, and autolytic elements due to 5 years of lees aging. Elegant and gastronomic, this is an ideal sparkling match for welcome appetizers and root vegetable gratins or soups. Ariana Rolich

Pouillon, R NV Champagne 1er Cru Brut Solera (Winter 2014)

Pouillon's Solera is one of the most affordable Champagnes of it kind. 50/50 Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from Mareuil-sur-Aÿ. The "solera" dates back to 1997 and is kept in a stainless steel tank. Every year 30% of this reserve wine is removed from the tank for secondary fermentation. The idea of this cuvée is to downplay vintage variation in favor of the expression of the Mareuil terroir. Deep golden in color and sporting a fine mousse, the nose delivers aromas of wisteria, fresh baguette, Doyenne pears, and a touch of mocha. The palate is weighty, powerful, and rounded with aromas of Bartlett pears, Fuji apples, that are laced by a fine minerality that carries through to a lemon zest finish. (Disgorged : Summer 2014).

Rene Geoffroy NV Champagne Cumieres Saignee 1.5L Rose 1er Cru

Although this magnum shares the same base vintage (2012) as the 750ml, the stylistic differences between the two are clear. The magnum offers greater aromatic range, greater minerality, and greater aging potential, while remaining every bit as savory and delicious. It shows a striking ruby-pink in the glass and a finely-beaded mousse. The nose is a parade of black cherries, gooseberries, wild strawberries, thyme, and sage. The palate brings great concentration and focus with a zinging minerality that carries notes of black cherries and perfectly ripe raspberries through to a cranberry and blood orange zest finish. Rosé de Saignéee method Champagne does not come more refined, complex and lip-smacking than this great effort from Geoffroy. (100% Pinot Noir, Disgorged : 7/2014). - David Salinas

Les Fouques 2014 Côtes de Provence La Londe Rosé

The 2014 Rosé La Lande is a beautiful wine and a real rosé of terroir! Made from 70% Cinsault and 10% each of Grenache, Syrah and Vermentino, the 2014 La Londe is a lovely pale pink color with subtle aromas of peach skin, raspberry and rose. The palate is light, balanced and long with red and yellow fruits, citrus, spice and saline mineral flavors. Drinking beautifully now, it will improve over the next year or two and accompany an elegant ceviche, fish or chicken, salads and mild cheeses. Great sipped by itself as well, really delicious and highly recommended! (July 2015) Tasted again in May of 2016, the 2014 La Londe is drinking beautifully in an extremely dry and mineral style, showing elegant hints of fruit and mineral flavors and fabulous depth on the palate that should continue to develop over the next two to three years.

Guion 2014 Bourgueil Rosé

(The 2014 Guion rosé is back, the last 5 cases direct from Bourgueil!) 2014 shows plenty of minerality, with stone fruit, a hint of spring strawberries (think more tart, less fruity), tangerine, and spice. This is a very complex dry rosé, showing earthy red fruits and stone flavors that are still developing in its second year. Really tastes of the limestone terroir and the Guion's 50 years of organic farming, with a long finish and ample acidity and freshness. Thanks to Stéphane for another great vintage, and for finally putting his rosé in a clear bottle!

Dragonette Cellars 2014 Santa Barbara County Happy Canyon Rose

We're such fanatics for Dragonette's red Grenache that it seemed prudent to request a bit of their luscious rose! 70% Grenache and 27% Mourvedre from Vogelzang vineyard, hand harvested specifically for the rose, plus a 3% splash of Syrah from Stolpman and John Sebastiano vineyards, whole cluster pressed to neutral French barrels for 5 months. The result is juicy and exhilarating, with watermelon, tart Rainier cherries, and blood orange on the nose and flavors of wild strawberry, ripe musky peaches, tart cranberry, spicy citrus, and a hint of salt and stone. A real treat with fish tacos, pork and poultry (including duck) and the cornucopia of veggies  returning to the farmers' markets right now. Ariana Rolich

Grange aux Belles 2014 Vin de France Brise d'Aunis

We love the beautiful cool, spicy fruit of Pineau d'Aunis at Thanksgiving, and this version by Granges Aux Belles, with a bit of Gamay, is a terrific choice! Primarily Pineau d'Aunis from old vines with Gamay, organic farming, 16 mg/L total SO2, destemmed, short maceration (not carbonic).  A French retailer says, "If you plan a meal featuring La Brise d'Aunis, and a car is to be driven afterward, make sure there is someone who will not touch a drop of this wine!" Floral black raspberry, white pepper, plum and strawberry liqueur, with a bit of earth and funk. The palate is deep and cool with ripe blackberry, black cherry and spice, with the low-yield Gamay juice bringing more weight. Long dense finish of earthy black fruits, citrus and minerals. Just plain delicious!

Pignard 2012 Morgon 1.5 L

Beaujolais for Thanksgiving? Absolutely, and even better in magnum! We're very proud to have the lovely Morgons of Roland Pignard at Chambers Street. From high-elevation 60 year-old vines on sandy clay over granite in the commune of Saint-Joseph north-west of Villié-Morgon. Biodynamic farming, no SO2 until a minimal dose before bottling, nine-day carbonic-maceration. The Pignard's great vineyard work brought lovely ripeness to their 2012s which are all outstanding - although there is no Regnie in this vintage.of tiny yields. The 2012 "regular" Morgon is simply delicious! Dense dark red color. Lovely Morgon aromas of ripe blackberry and black cherry, really pretty and balanced at 12.5%. The palate shows lovely black fruits, blood orange, earth and spice, blending nicely with earthy acids, quite delicious, with a balanced and very mineral finish. A beautiful Morgon to drink now and over the next five to seven years.

Grochau Cellars 2014 Willamette Valley Pinot Noir Commuter Cuvée

John & Kerri Grochau's Commuter Pinot Noir is just as fun and zippy as its label suggests, and that's precisely what we love about this easy drinking wine.  The 2014 vintage is lively, fresh, and bright revealing strawberry & cherry preserves, a hint of baking spices, and a silky mouthfeel that leads to some subtle vanilla.  The grapes are hand picked from 8 different organically farmed vineyards within the Willamette Valley and spend over 7 months on the lees in a combination of oak and stainless steel.  Even though it's light in body, the 13.8% alcohol lends this wine the flexibility to stand alone or compliment fuller fare. Folk Machine 2014 Central Coast Pinot Noir

Kenny Likitprakong makes some of our favorite single-vineyard California Pinot Noirs for his Ghostwriter label, so it was a thrill to learn that he makes this delicious and very affordable bottling from a blend of Central Coast vineyards, fermented with native yeasts and vinified gently with some whole clusters and batonnage with 9 months in used French oak. Refreshing, satisfying, and elegant, with tart, pretty wild strawberries, rich red and black cherries, and hints of savory earth and herbs. Crowd-pleasing and versatile at the table, it's an ideal "house" red and a terrific value. Ariana Rolich

Vino di Anna 2014 Vino da Tavola Palmento (Etna)

The winery of Vino di Anna sits on the North side of Mount Etna in Sicily and is where winemakers Anna Martens and Eric Narioo bring their wine to life.  The region is destructively beautiful.  Mount Etna remains an active volcano, supplying the high elevated vineyards with mineral rich soil blackened by decomposed lava.  Needless to say, harvesting here can be quite a challenge, but the reward is the Palmento Rosso. This wine is made from a blend of organically farmed grapes including Nerello Mascalese , Nerello Cappuccio, Alicante and the indigenous white grapes Minella, Catarratto, Insolia, which are crushed by foot and spend 7 months on the lees. It is not fined or filtered and minimal sulfur is added at bottling.  The result is a light, fruit forward, and expressive wine.  The palate showcases tart, juicy raspberry, lemon zest, crisp acidity and an understated savory quality.  Tannins are present, but soft.  A natural wine of terroir that is as unique as its landscape. Amaltea is the name of a foster mother of Zeus, who suckled him to health in the form of a goat. You may find a similarly life-giving force in this terrific, affordable blend of Cabernet, Tempranillo, and Merlot from Loxarel (Cava experts in the Alt Penedes, who also excel at making still wines).Fresh, juicy cherry and raspberry fruit bursts on top the palate, accompanied by soft, pretty earth, peppery herbs, a hint of rose. The farming at Loxarel is strictly organic (certified) and biodynamic (practicing), which makes the price of this delicious wine all the more compelling. Ariana Rolich

Rodriguez, Luis 2013 Ribeiro Eidos Ermos Tinto

Luis Rodriguez makes wines of singular elegance and quality in the Ribeiro D.O. of Galicia, about 45 miles in from the Atlantic coast, just north of Portugal. He refers to the Eidos Ermos as one of his "basic" wines, but we respectfully deem it exceptional! An authentic blend of local red grapes, revived and planted by Rodriguez, Eidos Ermos consists mostly of Brancellao, with Souson, Caino, and Ferrol; aromas of kirsch and coffee beans precede the medium-bodied palate of tart cherry, spicy cranberry, dried herbs, and refreshing acidity. I like to drink this wine in place of Cabernet Franc from Chinon or Bourgueil with pork chops, duck, and gamey poultry. Ariana Rolich

Filipa Pato 2014 Bairrada Beiras Tinto 'FP'

Young luminary Filipa Pato produces terroir-driven wines of finesse and personality, farming organically in the Bairrada DOC of western Portugal. Comprised of 98% Baga blended with other native varieties grown in chalky-clay soil, "FP" is a beautifully crafted gem which provides all of the thought provoking pleasure of a Saturday night bottle at a week day price. The wine instantly captivates with a riot of crushed rose petal, peony and violet on the nose accented by a liberal dose of Portuguese spice. The fluid, expansive palate offers up notes of ripe, but fresh strawberry, plum and cherry with a hint of graphite. The intricacy and depth of flavors which evolve and unfold in the glass, combined with brightening, palate cleansing acidity inherent in the Baga grape and reinforced by the cooling influence of the nearby Atlantic, make this wine an exciting choice to pair with anything from roasted rabbit, suckling pig or duck. Sydney Snyder

Dupasquier 2011 Savoie Mondeuse 1.5 L

In my opinion, David Dupasquier’s Mondeuse is his piece de resistance. The sunny clime and wide diurnal range naturally results in healthy vines and perfectly ripe grapes which the Dupasquier family masterfully makes into seriously delicious wines. This wine is deep with a dark purple robe and exhibits spicy blackberry fruit, black peppercorn, dried violet petals, and a touch of meaty funk reminiscent of northern Rhône Valley Syrah. The year spent in large neutral oak helps to soften the tannins and the year spent in bottle before release allows the fruit to integrate well with the spicy and savory flavors present on the palate. Rouge Gorge (Cyril Fhal) 2014 VdP des Côtes Catalanes Jeunes Vignes

For natural wine-lovers what could be better than Cyril Fhal at Thanksgiving! A profound and insanely delicious wine! From 30 year-old Grenache vines in a parcel on gneiss subsoil called Mont-Redon. Hand-harvested into small baskets, foot pressing followed by three month vinification in wooden vats, then 8 months aging in stainless steel. "An infusion of grapes, allowing an expression of the delicacy of the variety," says Cyril. Slight reduction, then ripe, complex aromas of blackberry, black-cherry, citrus, violet, plum skin and earth. Intense fruit on the fresh, medium-bodied palate, with blackberry and tart black-cherry, licorice, meat and earth, silky texture with lively acidity and fabulous length. Chiesa, Carlo 2014 Langhe Nebbiolo

Assuming that you don’t want your wine oaky and jammy, this is one of the best Nebbiolos from the Roero that I’ve tasted, and it compares favorably with the finest produced in Barolo / Barbaresco. It hits lovely savory and cherry liqueur notes; it’s intense and mouthfilling but light on the palate; firmly tannic, this will play well with a wide range of food, so long as it’s nothing too delicate in flavor. Garon 2012 Côte-Rôtie La Sybarine

We love Northern Rhone Syrah for Thanksgiving and the Garon Sybarine is an elegant Burgundian-style Cote-Rotie that's delicious in it's youth. From 25 year-old vines in Goutay and Mollard on the lower slopes of the Côte Blonde. Granit sub-soil with clay and pebbly sand topsoil. Aged 18 months in old barriques. La Sybarine, on 100% granit soils, is the most forward and open of the Garon Côte-Roties. This has lovely cherry and blackberry liqueur aromas with hints of spice and violets. The palate is ripe but with good acidity and lift, and with good underlying mineral character. Showing the bright, pretty fruit of 2012 and already quite delicious with lovely sweet fruit in the finish, this should open up nicely over the next few years and drink well until 2022. Great value!

Arcole 2010 Saint-Emilion Grand Cru

Located in the heart of Saint-Emilion, certified organic estate Château de Bellevue has farmed 11 hectares of Merlot and Cabernet Franc on limestone and clay for more than 200 years. The grapes are hand-harvested and fermentations are with native yeasts and the wine is bottled without fining or filtration. The 2010 has a beautiful tension between structured earthiness and lively fruit. The classic aromas of cassis and blackberry are followed by graphite and a darker sense of earth. The palate is medium-bodied and generous with ample fruit and an earthy core. What is more notable is the absence of excessive wood, alcohol, and extraction which seems to be the hallmark of modern Saint-Emilion. This is lovely stuff. John McIlwain

Montecivoli 2012 Morellino di Scansano

We hold dearly to our impression, formed years ago, that Morellino di Scansano should be a pure expression of Sangiovese, a bit lighter and easier-going than good Chianti or wine from Montalcino or Montepulciano, and somehow expressive of Scansano’s relative proximity to the sea. For a long time we’ve been on the hunt for Morellino that we really liked, but with no luck – to our taste the zone has fallen on hard times because of the introduction of all kinds of distressing innovation, most importantly permitting the addition to the wine of any old other grape variety that the producer might choose. The wines might taste like good red wine, but to us they certainly didn’t taste like Morellino. Then we found Montecivoli, where wine was first produced for commercial sale in the early 1990s. The vines are farmed organically and are not irrigated (which is notable because irrigation has become very common in Scansano ). The wine is fermented in stainless steel and then aged for six months in 4-5 year old barriques. No spoofilation is employed in the production of this wine, and SO2 levels are very low. Anyway, we love the wine – it takes us back to our old ideal for Morellino.

Savino - I Fenicotteri 2012 Sicilia Nero d'Avola Nero Sichili

Vittorio Savino, owner of Fenicotteri, joined Foti’s small association of producers called i Vigneri (some of whose wines from Mt. Etna we always have on our shelves). I Vigneri offers unparalleled expertise in every aspect of viticulture and production (including the services of Ciccio, the group’s mule). Foti’s work at Gulfi, and his knowledge derived from the vines in Pachino must have been very valuable when trying to restore a vineyard that’s virtually on the shore of the lagoon. The farming is impeccable (only copper and sulfur and sheep manure are used on the bush-trained vines) but it’s the location that brings an incredibly compelling mineral and saline lift to the wine. It’s perhaps on the light side of medium-bodied, savory aromatics with typical plummy Nero d’Avola fruit, and in a perfectly balanced state for current drinking – fresh, with great cut and moderately tannic structure – entirely satisfying. Called Fenicotteri (flamingo, in Italian) after the migratory flamingoes who visit the lagoon next to the vineyard, this is one special wine. Jamie Wolff     Eighty percent of the clusters are destemmed and crushed. It’s macerated for 14 days in steel vats, matures in used barriques for at least six months, and then spends six months in bottle before it’s released. The result is a beautiful Nero d’Avola, deep and dark. Tart red cherries and ripe blackberries, violets and earth with leather and spice on the finish. With medium high acid and medium tannins, this will be perfect to pair with gamey meats, BBQ, a hearty beef stew, roast turkey or even tuna steak. If you're a vegetarian, try it with lentils and shitake mushrooms. Christine Manula

Ecu (Bossard & Van Herck) 2014 Muscadet Sèvre et Maine Granite

The Domaine de l'Ecu "Granite" is always among the greatest of Muscadets and a testament to the heroic efforts of Guy Bossard - certified organic in 1975 and Biodynamic in 1998. Frequently a bit musty and closed in it's youth, the 2014 Granite shows surprisingly ripe aromas of dried pear, lime-flower, candied almond, citrus and stone. (On day two, the aromas have become more elegant, complex and quite beautiful) There is ample cool acidity on the palate framing the complex white fruits, stone, citrus and almond flavors that continue on the long very mineral finish. This is a great vintage for Granite - absolutely wonderful now and over the next fifteen years or more...

Saumon, Frantz 2014 Montlouis sur Loire Mineral Plus 1.5 L

Frantz Saumon consistently makes some of the most compelling wines in Montlouis. The soils here are shallow, but rich in clay and silex with a limestone base, making for chiseled wines that with an emphasis on purity and minerality. Minéral+ is made from 100% Chenin Blanc sourced from all of Frantz’s parcels in an effort to showcase all terroirs present in Montlouis. The nose is rife with yellow citrus fruits, honeysuckle, and smoked sea salt. The palate is much more airy and cerebral, very dry as well, with a punch of citrus and tangy minerals framed by a racy acidity and fleshy texture. I find it to be an incredibly polished wine, begging to be served on any occasion. Did I mention that this is a magnum? Tim Gagnon

Salinia Wine Company 2012 Mendocino Redwood Valley Skin Contact Sauvignon Blanc

Natural wine fans will give thanks for this fascinating American Sauvignon Blanc from the brilliant Kevin Kelley at Salinia Wine Co. Simultaneously explosive and linear, this is the same Sauvignon Blanc that goes into Kevin's perennially popular Twenty-Five Reasons Pet Nat, from 40 year-old, organically farmed vines in Mendocino County. Aromas are tropical and golden, cut with hay and salty broth, with a chiseled, glassy palate of crunchy peaches, white currants, fresh green herbs, salt, and pithy, piquant citrus zests. One month of skin contact provides texture and complexity. A serious autumnal follow-up to the light-hearted Sauv Blancs of summer, this is a match for briny oysters, whitefish salad, roasted poultry, and cheese. Ariana Rolich

Thomas-Labaille 2014 Sancerre Chavignol Les Monts Damnées

This is crowd-pleasing Sauvignon-Blanc from one of the finest vineyards in Sancerre - a great choice for Thanksgiving! Jean-Paul Labaille continues the great work of his father-in-law Claude Thomas, creating one of the finest Sancerres from vines in "les Monts Damnees," an incredibly steep-south facing hillside in Chavignol on Kimmeridgian limestone and red clay. The 2014 is a great example of this wine, with complex elegant aromas of dried pear, lime-flower, boxwood, citrus and stone. The palate is ripe and full but with firm acidity, with flavors of white fruits, anise, saline minerals, citrus and earth. This is a great Sancerre that is drinking beautifully now but don't hesitate to cellar for five to ten years...

Rateau 2012 Beaune 1er Cru Les Coucherias Blanc

Beaune 1er Cru "Les Coucherias" is high on the slope on the site of an old quarry and much of the sub-soil is limestone tailings, permitting root penetration and drainage, with a topsoil of mixed clay and limestone "marnes blanches." In biodynamic agriculture since 1979, the vineyard is a south-facing semi-circle—a very warm spot giving a full, ripe wine. The 2012 has lovely aromas of ripe pear and apple, with lemon-oil, melon and floral notes. The palate is quite round and ripe with pear, quince, lemon confit and honey backed with chalky minerals and good acidity. This is quite delicious now and until 2025.

Tempe 2012 Alsace Pinot Blanc Zellenberg

We have been big fans of Marc Tempe's Alsatian wines for many years and we're very happy that the wines are once again available in NY. Biodynamic since 1996. "More than a technique, Biodynamie is a philosophy of life" say the Tempes and this philosophy is expressed in their superb farming and meticulous vinifications. The 2012 Pinot Blanc Zellenberg is a gorgeous wine that will grace your table on Thanksgiving or any other day. Lovely aromas of lime-flower, citrus, pear, honey - complex and beautiful. Ample acidity and mineral flavors on the palate framing dried pear, apple, citrus, earth and white pepper. Long finish with lingering fruit and minerals - a great food wine and a wonderful aperitif as well. Highly recommended!

Vignato 2013 Gambellara Classico El Gian

If you love Soave, this is the wine for you without paying the premium of the famous place name! Located about a 15 minute drive from Soave are the volcanic hills of Gambellara. Davide Vignato was the first winemaker to be certified organic and practicing biodynamic in this DOC.  Made from 100% Garganega, the same grape as Soave, "El Gian" is named after the winemaker’s father who planted the vines 25 years ago in these rolling hills using the traditional pergola system. The wine is made in stainless steel tanks and rests on the lees for five months before being bottled. Straw yellow in color, it has both fruity and floral aromas, good minerality and acidity, and is savory with a hint of spice and citrus. Perfect with a meaty white fish, chicken or even a quiche at brunch! Christine Manula

Espelt 2014 Emporda Garnacha Blanca

Lovers of the Garnatxa Blanca from Herencia Altes should look no further! The Espelt family has been growing grapes for centuries on the sandy granite, limestone, and slate soils of Emporda. In the early 2000s, they began bottling under their own name, resulting in some of the best values coming out of Catalonia. Espelt's vineyards are certified organic and dedicated primarily to native varieties like Lledoner (Catalonian Grenache) and Carinyena. This wine is 100% Garnatxa Blanca from 50 year-old vines, fermented and aged for 3 months in neutral French oak barrels. Medium bodied, with pure, fluid flavors of white peach, lemon-lime, and golden apple surrounding a firm mineral spine. Fresh and versatile. Ariana Rolich

Alta Alella 2014 Alella Tallarol

Alta Alella's 100% Pansa Blanca (Xarello) is farmed organically, fermented and raised with no added SO2 in amphorae made of Alta Alella's own sandy granitic coastal vineyard soils just north of Barcelona.. This is wine that that is redolent of the grapes that made it, crackling with integrity, musky grape blossoms, flesh, and skin, and life. Aromas of white grapefruit, bitter melon, juicy pineapple, heady florals and brown sugar open into exotic, tangy, palate of exotic pear, juicy citrus, jasmine, aloe, white tea, wheat beer, sea salt, and coriander. Roasted parsnips or turnips with citrus zests, hearty greens with garlic and porchetta, and rich poultry are a brilliant pair for this wine (not to mention fish or scallops). Ariana Rolich

Arnot-Roberts 2014 Napa Valley Chardonnay Watson Ranch

It's not surprising that two homegrown Napa boys from Healdsburg (Duncan Arnot-Meyers Nathan Lee Roberts) have represented the vanguard of the "New California Wine" movement of the past 10 years. Lemon curd and white donut peach flavors combine with subtle notes of chalk, salt spray, marzipan, and fennel seed. A deft use of neutral French oak and organic farming frame the remarkable terroir of this cool-climate, limestone soil driven site in the southern most reaches of Napa Valley. A well-crafted Chardonnay to please even both the hardened Burg-hound and Cali Chard drinker, and a crisp, full white to cut through the Thanksgiving turkey and stuffing! Jonas Mendoza

Swick Wines 2014 Washington Columbia Gorge Pinot Gris Les Sous Bois

The Sous-Bois label is Joe Swick's project from the Underwood Vineyard in the Columbia River Gorge, where his family is from. The site is 5 acres of Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir planted at 1500 ft above sea-level in basalt soils across from the Columbia River. Sous-Bois, meaning “forest floor,” alludes to the autumnal earthy quality of these alpine wines. The Gris undergoes full malolactic fermentation which allows for a fuller, dry style. It’s racked off the lees after aging 8 months in neutral oak then bottled with minimal sulphur. The cloudy Gris shows generous green fruit and subtle herbal notes on the nose. On the palate zesty citrus, honey and lively acidity with a refreshingly mineral finish. Amanda Bowman

Schaefer, Willi 2014 Mosel Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Kabinett

Schaefer's 2014 Graacher Himmelreich does not disappoint and although it's currently delightful; it has tremendous aging potential. The nose reveals itself in stages of peppermint, cardamom, cinnamon, petrol, and smoky tones. The palate is lifted by a resplendent core of minerality that shows incredible length and finesse with filaments carrying notes of tart lemon sorbet and cotton candy. Masterful and sublime Riesling Kabinett!

Stagard 2014 Grüner Veltliner Handwerk

Refreshing and complex, this is charming Grüner Veltliner of a pedigree we don't get to encounter often enough. 12 hours of maceration with the stems gives this Grüner some meat on its bones, but it only adds a subtle underpinning of earth and nuts to what is otherwise an easy, refreshing wine; soft, floral and elegantly drinkable. All work is done by hand, with no botrytis, and fermentation is done is stainless steel.  Jonathan Kemp
