When we’re lucky enough to be offered wines by private collectors we don’t try to cherry pick, we just buy the wine – we’d like to be invited back to the party. Of course our idea of what’s a cherry is in the eye of the beholder: we do pass on the Harlan, but we’d love to have the old Beaujolais. In the case of older wine from Piedmont, this means that large purchases sometimes come with wine that we’re not familiar with. The producer might no longer exist, or they might have never exported their wine and so be unknown to us; whatever the case it can’t be Rinaldi, etc, all of the time. One of the reasons we lament the rapid passage of time is because we don’t have the opportunity (ie, the time, although money also comes into the calculation) to taste everything. This list is composed of wines that we have little or no experience of. In the little-but-positive camp: Azelia, Boffa, Damilano, Einaudi, Ratti. We’ve had good feedback on some others, and we hope the tempting prices make taking the plunge attractive. We look forward to your reports! Jamie Wolff
NB: wines will be available for delivery or pick-up beginning on Tuesday, December 1.
