New French Cellar Arrivals

Share

The question arises: what makes the perfect gift? While we wouldn't insist upon there being one perfect gift, we do have an inclination that a very nice gift is perfectly aged wine. Below is a newly arrived selection of cellared French wines we'd love to find under the tree or upon the table this holiday season! As always we guarantee the condition of our cellar purchases, so you can be confident in purchasing these rare and wonderful back vintages. John McIlwain

Des Croix 2005 Beaune 1er Cru Pertuisots

At the moment, very open with lots of les petits fruits rouges. Supple, very ripe tannins, good acidity and all elements are in perfect balance. Elegant, yet powerful and flavorful. Drink now or cellar.

Drouhin 1996 Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Mouches

The 1996 Drouhin Clos des Mouches rouge has beautiful color with a limpid ruby to garnet robe. The aromatics leap from the glass, showing red-fruited, floral, and spices offset by beautiful autumnal notes. The palate remains a bit primary, but is resolving nicely with pretty cherry, soil, and game flavors. This is drinking nicely (especially for the 1996 vintage), but the structure bodes well for the future. I really like this now, but I suspect I will love this with another few years in the cellar. A special and lovely wine, this is a great reminder of why one ages Burgundy. (Tasted 12/3/15.) John McIlwain

Fourrier 2008 Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Combe aux Moines

The Combes aux Moines vineyard is at the top of the hill and is bordered by woods above it. The vineyard is surrounded by the 1er Cru vineyards of Les Cazetiers, Les Goulots, and Champeaux. This vineyard belonged to the Monks of Cluny before the Cistercians but was planted by the Benedictine monks in the 7th Century. Jean Marie imagines the Monks walking here at sunset. Because the vineyard is just below the woods he says he often sees animals in this vineyard — in the spring there are foxes playing with their kits; in the summer the vipers sun themselves on the rocks; in the fall he sees wild boar. It is a very rocky vineyard, former site of two quarries that were filled in after the second World War. The rocks store up the heat of the sun insuring that the grapes always ripen. The wine is full and strong, very dense, powerful, and often tannic. Tradition states that you should drink Combes aux Moines during hunting season at ten years of age or so. This 2008 is approachable now and will benefit from further cellaring. It is a muscular Gevrey with plenty of stuffing.
