Share

Our last shipment of old-school organic wines  from Clos du Joncuas sold out almost immediately, but we were able to place one more order including the superb 2005 and 2006 Gigondas, as well as the delicious 2010 Vacqueyras. This is the last inventory of these lovely wines so don't delay in obtaining a few for your table and cellar! if you've missed our previous emails about this unique estate here is a brief summary: Clos du Joncuas, founded in 1920 by Pierre Auguste Chastan, has always farmed with natural methods and has been officially organic since 1980. Currently run by sisters Dany and Carole Chastan, the estate's Gigondas vines are on slopes below the Dentelles de Montmirail on soils of clay with dolomite and gypsum over the limestone of the Dentelles and average 40 to 90 years old. Vinifications here are entirely old-school; whole-clusters fermented with wild yeasts in cement and aged in old barrels. The wines tend to be a bit tannic when young but begin to drink well after 3 to 4 years and show beautifully at 8 to 15 years with the wonderful complexity typical of real, un-spoofilated, old-fashioned Gigondas. Especially brilliant is the 2005 "Esprit de Grenache" from 60 year-old massale selection vines. Clos du Joncuas also has excellent parcels in neighboring Vacqueyras and Seguret. The Vacqueyras also needs three to five years of aging while the Seguret drinks well young in a more forward but still quite traditional, complex style. Rounding out their production is an oustanding Gigondas Rosé, certainly one of the finest in the Southern Rhone.

For many years now we've been working with the great father and son team of Guy and Thomas Jullien at La Ferme Saint-Martin in Beames-de-Venise. One of the first estates in the southern Rhone to practice organic farming and low-sulfur vinificatons, the high-altitude vineyards produce complex, powerful reds that retain freshness and balance as well as a full-bodied white and a fabulous rosé. From their website: "The vineyards are exposed due south on dry and stony limestone terroir, in terraces from 600 to 1800 feet in altitude. We have cultivated the vines in certified organic agriculture since 1998. Each parcel is harvested by hand and we select with care (with a sorting table) the grapes that enter the cellar. The vinifications are done without the addition of any oenological products. Our family, united in the same passion, works with conviction and determination to bring you living wines, free to express their personalities, true reflections of their terroir."  The reds offered today , especially Costancia and Cuvée Saint-Martin, are big, well-structured wines that will need carafing or opening well in advance if drinking soon - they are outstanding wines that are worth the effort or time in the cellar. the Côtes-du-Rhône white, called simply "le Blanc," is partially vinified with skin-contact and also benefits from decanting - it's a superb value showing great complexity both aromatically and on the palate. The rosé is simply delicious! We urge you to try these truly unique though inexpensive wines...

Wines arrive Tuesday Jan 12 for local delivery Wednesday, shipping Tuesday depending on destination and weather.

Clos du Joncuas 2005 Gigondas Esprit de Grenache VV

This is Gigondas at its finest! 100% Grenache from old vines, fermented in cement, and aged in large oak vats before being bottled unfined and unfiltered with minimal added sulphur. It gives you that classic Grenache mustiness – like blackberries and blueberries smashed onto the forest floor – but also more fresh and delicate notes of nutmeg and strawberries. Hints of grapefruit peel, vine tomato and pine offer added depth. Given its age, it is still incredibly energetic on the palate with wonderfully resolved tannins and ripe black berry fruit. Truly a complex and delicious wine with a long life ahead of it! Tim Gagnon

Clos du Joncuas 2005 Gigondas

Gigondas can be a bit of a minefield. It can produce great value wines which express distinctive Southern Rhône terroir, conversely it is the source of many wines which are more expressive of expensive cooperage and ambition. The resolutely old-school Clos du Joncuas produces the former. They farm organically, ferment whole cluster with native yeasts in concrete, then age the wine in large used oak casks. The ripe fruit is balanced by fairly stern tannins when young, without the sheen imbued by new oak. This is Gigondas which benefits from time in the cellar, revealing a rustic elegance.

The 2005 Gigondas is in beautiful place. The rich, plummy, black fruit on the nose is balanced by notes of garrigue, meat, and a hint of coffee. The palate is rich and sappy (though not heavy), with warm, concentrated black fruits, leather, spices, and savory minerality. The tannins are still present, framing the ripeness of the fruit without drying out on the finish. A generous, sunny wine with an underlying sense of earthiness, this should be superb with cassoulet, game, or braised meats. -John McIlwain

Clos du Joncuas 2006 Gigondas

What do we have here? Old-fashioned Gigondas? We are seldom fortunate enough to taste these.

Clos du Joncuas farms organically, vinifies whole-cluster in concrete, and does élevage in old large casks. The color of the 2006 is a bright intense ruby. The nose is floral, black-fruited, plummy with savory hints of animale and garrigue. This evolves into spicy and earthy notes without losing any sense of ripe-not overripe-fruit. There is good richness to the palate; the ripe fruit is at the forefront with a significant counter-balance of earth. Black pepper, violets, leather follow on the mostly-resolved, long finish. There is a hint of dryness, perhaps from the old oak, but no sense of austerity. Consider it refined rusticity.

Was lovely paired with grilled lamb and Borlotti beans.

Clos du Joncuas 2014 Gigondas Rosé

This is a beautiful Gigondas Rosé from our organic friends at Clos du Joncuas. Pretty bright pink color, aromas of raspberry, tart cherry, blood orange, peach skin and rose. Full palate with creamy red fruits and firm acidity. Long finish with tart cherry, peach, earth and citrusy acids. A bit lighter and better balanced than the 2013, and still young – it should open up nicely over the next two years. It's delicious now and very food-friendly – serve with grilled fish and white meats, salade nicoise, vegetarian dishes and Provençal foods. A great rose to enjoy all year-round!

Ferme Saint-Martin 2013 Beaumes-de-Venise Costancia

A great Beaumes-de-Venise from Guy and Thomas Jullien at La Ferme Saint-Martin. The estate has been working with organic methods for many years, with natural fermentations and minimal use of sulfur. The Costancia 2014 is from old vines of 50% Grenache and 50% Syrah grown at 1,800 ft in Suzette, on limestone/clay soils facing southeast and southwest with yields of about 30 hl/ha. At this altitude the Syrah has better freshness and acidity than in other parts of the southern Rhône. Aged in an old foudre. Deep complex aromas of blackberry/blueberry and red fruits with earth, garrigue, violet and mint. Mostly black fruits on the palate with hints of blueberry, provencal herbs and citrus. A powerful wine that stays balanced with cool acidity. Elegant and delicious now, this will improve over the next 6 to 10 years. This lovely wine is a testament to more than thirty years of great farming and natural winemaking by the Jullien family  David Lillie
