Dear Hubert Lignier... Thank you for setting these bottles aside. A sweet lineup of back vintage Burgundy

Christmas in January or Easter Everywhere? Back Vintage Hubert Lignier and a Second Chance from Nuits St. Georges

Share

With apologies to T. S. Eliot, in many ways January is the cruelest month. The inevitable post-holiday let down, the dark and cold, the half-hearted resolutions to never enjoy oneself again... The first month truly leaves a lot to be desired.

But there are few rays of sunshine to brighten these days. We were recently offered a small parcel of perfectly aged Burgundies directly from the cellar of one of the Côte d'Or's most venerable growers, Hubert Lignier. Quantities are small, but the wines compelling and the opportunity to taste impeccably stored Lignier with age is a true treat!

And who says there are no second chances? Last year we were delighted to offer a number of the fabulous 2012 Nuits St. Georges from Domaine Jean Chauvenet. I tasted the wines about a year ago first in New York and again with winemaker Christophe Drag in his cellars in April. The wines are fragrant, detailed, and expressive of the various climats of Nuits St. Georges. Unfortunately, one of the wines I love most from the domain sold out before our offer last year. The 2012 Nuits St. Georges Les Perrières premier cru is lovely wine with soaring aromatics and a real sense of terroir. It has happily become available again, albeit it small quantities. I unabashedly love the wines of Les Perrières, arguably Nuits St. Georges’ prettiest cru, and recommend buying a few bottles to cellar, as these should age beautifully. John McIlwain

Chauvenet 2012 Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Perrieres

From .23 hectare of vines dating back to 1948 between the parcels farmed by Gouges and Regis Forey. Les Perrières high on the slope between Les Poulettes and Les Poirets. The soil contains many stones which retain heat and Christophe Drag says this is the first vineyard harvested after the Bougogne. As Clive Coates has noted, somewhat atypically for Nuits St. Georges, the wines from this climat are more floral and feminine though certainly displaying great minerality. The 2012 Les Perrières is effusively floral with cherry blossoms and white flowers giving way to bright, pure cherry aromas and notes of spice. In the mouth it shows pretty black cherry, herb, and minerals on a medium bodied, but fine, palate with good sap and excellent energy following through on the lilting finish. John McIlwain
