Just Arrived - The Great 2014s (and more) From Clos des vignes du Maynes!

Share

2014 is a great vintage for Julien Guillot and the Clos des vignes du Maynes with wines of  bright, lush fruit, impeccable balance and fantastic acidity and mineral expression. The top cuvées here are very rare, even in France, and we urge lovers of natural wines to obtain a sampling of these extraordinary wines. Julien also produces wines from organic/biodynamic parcels outside the Clos, including a superb new Beaujolais-Leynes, the Haut de Balmont, from high elevation 90 year-old vines just south of Pouilly-Fuissé. Also featured today are his lovely (and inexpensive!) Macon-Villages and a superb Bourgogne Rouge. From the Clos itself we also have a new Crémant de Bourgogne that is a wildly delicious blend of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The top cuvées - Aragonite, les Chassagnes, Cuvée Auguste and Manganite are in very short supply and will be allocated accordingly.

Julien Guillot

The Clos des vignes du Maynes, consisting of 7.5 hectares in Cruzille (Macon) is one of the most unique and fascinating estates in France. The Guillot family has practised organic farming and vinifications without additives since the early 1950s, making them the grandfathers of "natural wine." Their high altitude vineyards in Cruzille on the third slope west of the Saone River are situated on slabs of limestone with thin clay soils containing crystals of aragonite and manganese. The Chardonnay, Gamay and Pinot Noir vines include a high percentage of Pinot Fin and Gamay à Petits Grains which are exclusively used for the cuvées Auguste (Pinot Noir) and Manganite.(Gamay). Currently in charge is the dynamic Julien Guillot, who took over from his father Alain in 2001, after a career as an actor and acrobat. A young man of great energy, humor and intelligence, he has been clearing and replanting some of the best parcels at the top of the slope in Cruzille which had been abandoned after phylloxera in 1896. Julien's vinifications are remarkably precise, producing old-fashioned Burgundies with the use of modern temperature controls and the finest barrels. While there is now a small dosage of SO2 for most whites, the reds are produced without added sulfites - as Julien explains, the estate's living soils and biodynamic farming produce juice that rarely needs "protection" and the family has 60 years of experience producing natural wines. To quote a recent featured article in LeRouge&LeBlanc, Spring 2015: "There is a great deal to say about the Clos des Vignes du Maynes: the integrity, the conscientious work, both experimental and precise; the quality of the terroir, incredibly rich; its history and its charm; the "romanesque" character and personalities of the family's history, their stature as precursors and inventors... But one sure and astonishing thing is the extreme quality of their wines, with such complexity and such an imprint of terroir that one cannot fail to recognize their excellence."

Guillot, Julien (Vignes du Maynes) 2014 Beaujolais Leynes Haut de Balmont (Arrives 12/12)

Julien Guillot of the Clos des vignes du Maynes makes this beautiful Beaujolais from a small parcel of 90 year-old Gamay vines of various old varieties in Leynes, just south of Pouilly-Fuissé. The parcel is at 1200 ft in altitude, with granite soils, giving a light but remarkably intense wine at 11.5% alcohol. The wine shows aromas of ripe blackberry, violets and earth, with hints of citrus and spice. Blackberry, plum and strawberry on the palate with firm citrusy acids, earth and mineral flavors. This is an outstanding natural Beaujolais - serve cool with charcuterie, chicken and pork dishes and full-flavored cheeses. David Lillie

Vignes du Maynes 2014 Macon-Cruzille Aragonite

From 40 to 80 year-old Chardonnay vines high on the slope in Cruzille on shallow soils of clay over crystallized limestone, rich in minerals. The living soils of the Clos des vignes du Maynes have been farmed organically since the 1950s. The 2014 is a superb, elegant Burgundy showing hints of dried pear, lemon verbena, honeysuckle and stone that broaden with time open but remain subtle and fresh. The palate is lean and dense with flavors of wet stone and minerals framing citrus peel and ripe pear. The finish is long and crystalline. Lovely wine, 48 bottles available...

Vignes du Maynes 2014 Mâcon-Cruzille Les Chassagnes 1.5L

This is a superb, subtle and very mineral Chardonnay from a replanted parcel at the very top of the Clos, abandoned since 1896, with thin clay soils rich in iron over limestone. A great terroir, never chemically treated and worked in biodynamic farming by Alain and Julien Guillot. The 2014 "les Chassagnes" is a beautiful wine! Yields of 18 hl/ha, giving a racy, stony wine with hints of white fruits, spice and honey, the palate is silky and crystalline - all mineral with subtle citrus and white fruits, very long and elegant. Highly recommended! David Lillie

Vignes du Maynes (Julien Guillot) 2012 Cremant de Bourgogne Extra-Brut Genevieve

Julien Guillot's 2012 Cremant Sainte Genevieve is simply brilliant, showing extraordinary aromas of red fruits, spiced pear and  blood orange with hints of cinnamon. The palate is creamy and full, with pear, red currant, honey, stone and brown spice with fabulous length. This is a beautiful living wine from soils that have never been treated with herbicides, pesticides or modern fertilizers. Highly recommended.  ** All fruit is from the Clos (25% Pinot Noir, 25% Gamay, 50% Chardonnay).

Vignes du Maynes 2005 Crémant de Bourgogne Ste. Geneviève Ex Brut

A store favorite has returned in its new, changed form. Almost 10 years on its lees before disgorgement in November, 2014 and made from grapes grown in a vineyard that has never received any artificial chemical treatment and filled with sometimes 100-year-old, selection massale, vines, yet to think of Julien Guillot's wines by the numbers is to miss the point. His Cremants remind us simply and understatedly that all wines come from vineyards and that all sparkling wines are but wines - beneath the bubbles lies a beautiful white Burgundy from exceptional terroir.

A discrete, but finely beaded mousse adorns the bold and savory 2005 Ste. Geneviève Extra Brut, while aromas of apple pie, honeysuckle, and spearmint float forward from the glass. the palate is broad, powerful, and possesses a certain tannic grip, which carries spicy notes of cinnamon and mace at the edges. This is a cremant with enough power and complexity to be paired with a meal. Enjoy!

Guillot, Julien (Vignes du Maynes) 2014 Bourgogne Rouge

Julien Guillot made beautiful wines in 2014 and this Pinot Noir is no exception, showing fabulous complexity, finesse and freshness. The lovely aromas are of raspberry, blood orange, tart plum, brown spice, earth and tea, for starters. The palate is soft, silky and refreshing with black fruits mingled with earth, citrus, stone and tea with tart plum and raspberry emerging in the finish. Any lover of natural wine should try this! 12.5% alcohol, no added SO2, 100% delicious. David Lillie

Guillot, Julien (Vignes du Maynes) 2014 Chénas Ultimatum Climat

Julien Guillot makes this lovely natural Chénas with grapes purchased from a friend working organically near La Chapelle-de-Guinchay, with zero added sulfites. (The label was created for the Copenhagen Climate Change Conference in 2009) The 2014 is an intense and beautiful botlle of Beaujolais, showing fresh ripe blackberry with a bit of violet, pepper, musk, earth and citrus. The palate is dense and vibrant with firm acidity and deep blackberry fruit, earth and licorice with saline minerals coating the mouth in the long intense finish. Carafe a few hours in advance if drinking now or cellar 3 to 5 years - drink until 2025.

Guillot, Julien (Vignes du Maynes) 2011 Macon-Villages

Julien Guillot of the Clos des vignes du Maynes, makes this lovely Macon-Villages from certified organic/biodynamic farmed Chardonnay grapes, but not from the Clos in Cruzille. The wine is a great value and quite delicious, especially as it is now showing a bit of maturity with aromas of ripe apricot, lemon and stone with earth and herbal notes. Lovely white fruits on the palate with hints of butterscotch; chalky mineral flavors and firm acidity on the finish. This will pair well with any fish or chicken dish and mild cheeses. DL
