Mid-Winter, Cold and Snowy: Time for Rosé!

Share

Back in January of 2011, Eric Asimov published an article in the NY Times entitled "A Rosé Can Bloom in Winter, Too!" and we couldn't agree more. A good rosé - made from grapes farmed with organic/biodynamic methods, harvested by hand, fermented with wild yeasts and bottled after a bit of aging - can be a great "food" wine all year round, perfectly accompanying many of our favorite dishes. Chambers Street is proud of our great selection of rosés, wines with pure, complex aromas and beautiful fruit on the palate, with firm acidity and mineral flavors that pair well with any fairly subtle cuisine. And rosés are often great values as well, as evidenced by some of the delicous wines in this email for as little as $9.99! Pick a bouquet of rosés from this email to brigten up your winter meals - here are a few suggestions to get you started...

Grilled Tuna - Perfectly matched by a full-bodied rosé! Red Pepper Pasta - Yum, with a light fresh rosé. Roast Chicken - OK, good with a light red but a nice Cab Franc rosé is perfect as well. Lentil Soup with fennel, tomatoes and mushrooms - a nice rich Rhone rosé is great! Braised Short Ribs - Proven to be spectacular with spicy Zinfandel rosé! Bouillabaisse - Of course, a Bandol or Provencal wine is perfect. Poached salmon and sauce Maltaise - says John McIlwain, with the Horiot Rosé des Riceys. Seared Pork Chops with herbs of Provence - the Clos du Joncuas would be a great pairing. Roasted Root Vegetables - tossed with citrus or balsamic dressing, or paired with pesto pasta, these sing with zesty Spanish sparklers. Shaved Fennel Salad is a great match for a crisp, citrus-y rosé - Les Fouque's Aubique Rosé fits the bill.  We could go on and on but you get the idea - a good rosé can be a great choice no matter what the weather may be... And how about some bubbly Rosé for Valentine's Day?

Navarre NV Vin de France Grenache Rosé Demi-Sec

This is a delicious vin doux naturel from Thierry Navarre made from very late-harvested Grenache. We imagine that it's a wine made the way wine used to be made all over the Languedoc before temperature control was an option. A bit sweet and somewhat sherry-like, the aromas are of prune and ripe cherry, with licorice and brown spice. Very long and nutty on the palate, perhaps the best way to imagine this wine is to think of an Oloroso sherry... then extrapolate! Absolutely delicious and a great accompaniment to chocolate, fruit tarts, dried fruits or simply by itself as an apéritif. Thanks to Thierry for finally making a label and shipping us some of this unique local specialty.

Ferme Saint-Martin 2014 Côtes du Ventoux Rosé d'Entrevon

A lovely rosé of Syrah, Grenache and Cinsault grown in the Ventoux.  Very pretty peach/raspberry aromas with citrus and spice. Beautiful palate of red-currant, raspberry, peach and brown spice, light but with good density and length. The Ferme Saint-Martin Rosé is always excellent - the 2014 is a light but complex and very pretty wine that is highly recommended, and it's a sensational value! P.S. Drinking beautifully in January of 2016 and will be delicious this coming summer as well...

Bart 2014 Marsannay Rosé

A lovely rose of Pinot Noir from Martin Bart in Marsannay, the 2014 shows a bit more weight than usual in this very pretty vintage of soft, forward fruit. Pale pink color. Pretty hints of strawberry lead to a refreshing palate of berry, citrus and red-currant fruit with good acidity. This is a lovely wine that will be very versatile at the table and refreshingly delicious by itself all summer long (and fall and winter, too) and it's a great value!

Guion 2014 Bourgueil Rosé

(The 2014 Guion rosé is back, the last 5 cases direct from Bourgueil!) 2014 shows plenty of minerality, with stone fruit, a hint of spring strawberries (think more tart, less fruity), tangerine, and spice. This is a very complex dry rosé, showing earthy red fruits and stone flavors that are still developing in its second year. Really tastes of the limestone terroir and the Guion's 50 years of organic farming, with a long finish and ample acidity and freshness. Thanks to Stéphane for another great vintage, and for finally putting his rosé in a clear bottle!

This lovely Provencal rosé is made from Grenache and Cinsault, farmed with organic and biodynamic methods by Christophe Durdilly in Puget Ville north of Hyères. The wine is fermented with wild-yeasts in egg-shaped vats giving beautiful, complex aromas of peach, red fruits and flowers with hints of spice. The palate is full-bodied, round and ripe with good acidity and length - really a delicious and "serious" rosé that should drink well over the next few years. Pair with seared tuna, salade Nicoise, grilled chicken or pork or just sip and enjoy!

Les Fouques 2014 Côtes de Provence La Londe Rosé

The 2014 Rosé La Lande is a beautiful wine and a real rosé of terroir! Made from 70% Cinsault and 10% each of Grenache, Syrah and Vermentino, the 2014 La Londe is a lovely pale pink color with subtle aromas of peach skin, raspberry and rose. The palate is light, balanced and long with red and yellow fruits, citrus, spice and saline mineral flavors. Drinking beautifully now, it will improve over the next year or two and accompany an elegant ceviche, fish or chicken, salads and mild cheeses. Great sipped by itself as well, really delicious and highly recommended! (July 2015) Tasted again in May of 2016, the 2014 La Londe is drinking beautifully in an extremely dry and mineral style, showing elegant hints of fruit and mineral flavors and fabulous depth on the palate that should continue to develop over the next two to three years.

Costes (Domaine des) 2014 Bergerac Rosé

Costes is an old French term for hillsides or slopes, which is very fitting for this hillside vineyard located in Bergerac.  The soil is a favorable combination of stone, sandy clay, and rolled gravel that suit thte primarily Cabernet Franc vines primarily grown on the Domaine des Costes Estate.  Nicole and Jean-Luc Dournel  took over the estate in 1992, overseeing the vineyard through its organic certification and biodynamic practices.  Made from Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, this food friendly rose shows fresh, red berries on the nose followed by wild strawberries, red currant, and a subtle, peppery finish on the palate.  Serve chilled and enjoy with lighter meals all year!

Lovely deep pink/red color, aromas of raspberry, red currant, brown spice and orange blossom. Beautiful bright red fruits on the palate with citrusy acids and good length, really delicious! A complex, medium-bodied rosé that will be perfect with a Salade Niçoise, grilled fish, chicken and pork and great to sip by itself. Traginer 2014 Collioure Rosé

This is an unusual Collioure Rosé made by Jean-François Deu at the biodynamic Domaine du Traginer from one-third each Grenache, Mourvèdre and Syrah.  Made with minimal sulfites, the wine is reductive and needs decanting or aeration, then shows opaque onion-skin color, aromas of ripe peach, raspberry, earth and ripe  melon with brown spice. The palate is dense with peach, blood orange, stone and dried herbs, intriguing and very long. The wine deepens nicely with time open—really an itriguing natural rosé that will accompany a fish soup, grilled tuna, chicken and pork dishes. Recommended for lovers of natural wines.

Calabretta, Cataldo 2014 Calabria Rosato Alicante

The 2014 Cataldo Calabretta Rosato is an unusual rosato that definitely side steps the mold of simple aperitif wine.  This wine, rather than being dominated by fruit, shows elusive umami notes on the nose; spiced brine, anise, and miso with blood orange and tart cranberry following.  The palate, while still savory, shows more citrus and stone fruit like pithy orange and white peaches.  With more tannin than most roses and bright acidity this wine demands food; grilled mackerel or sardines, briny olives, hard cheese, or a caesar salad (with anchovies!). Nusserhof (Heinrich Mayr) 2013 Südtirol Lagrein Kretzer (Rosato)

Hailing from the Tyrolean encalve of Bolzano, the wines of Nüsserhof are more of a piece with Austria than with Italy. Lagrein is a fairly obscure grape, descendent of Teroldego and related to Pinot Noir and Syrah, that can give fairly aromatic and high-toned wines. Light orange, ruby red in color, the nose shows aromas of cherries in Kirsch, strawberries and cream, candied red currants. The palate shows this wine to closer to a light red with round and weighty tannins, highlighted by red plums, goji berries, rhubarb, and blackberry coulis with a discrete, yet grippy finish. Clos du Joncuas 2014 Gigondas Rosé

This is a beautiful Gigondas Rosé from our organic friends at Clos du Joncuas. Pretty bright pink color, aromas of raspberry, tart cherry, blood orange, peach skin and rose. Full palate with creamy red fruits and firm acidity. Long finish with tart cherry, peach, earth and citrusy acids. A bit lighter and better balanced than the 2013, and still young – it should open up nicely over the next two years. It's delicious now and very food-friendly – serve with grilled fish and white meats, salade nicoise, vegetarian dishes and Provençal foods. A great rose to enjoy all year-round!

Cal Demoura 2014 Coteaux du Languedoc Qu'es Aquo Rosé

Mas Cal Demoura is one of the finest estates in the Languedoc, created by Jean-Pierre Jullien in th 1970s, now owned by isabelle and Vincent Goumard. The rose Qu'es Aquo is primarily Grenache and Cinsault grown on  pebbly limestone and clay soils in the Terasse de Larsac. Certified organic, hand harvested, very low yields. Aromas of ripe raspberry, red currant and white fruits with spice and citrus. Deep pure red fruits on the palate, quite pretty and long, with juicy red fruits in the crisp finish. Really pretty - serve with Salade Nicoise, grilled chicken or just sip by itself.

Manissy 2014 Tavel Cuvee des Lys Rose

Tavel, the warm, grenache-based rosé famously espoused by AJ Liebling, is perhaps more suited for the table than a light quaff on the patio. A darker pink than your typical salmon-hued wines of  Southern France with a palate to match, Tavel, if you'll forgive the idea, is a more "serious" rosé. The organically farmed Manissy 'Cuvée des Lys' is dark-fruited with ripe plum and garrique on the nose, with the spiciy warmth of sun-kissed Grenache on the medium-bodied palate followed by a hint of pleasing tannic bitterness on the finish. Served cool, this savory richness makes it a rosé especially suited for grilled meats, big flavors like tapenade, and sheep's milk cheeses on a late summer night. -John McIlwain

Horiot 2009 Rosé des Riceys En Valingrain (Still)

Obscurity has seldom prevented any of us at Chambers Street Wines from falling in love with a wine. One wine which tugs at the heartstrings for me is rarity Rosé des Riceys, the still rosé from the Aube in Champagne, which is made in tiny quantities only in warm vintages. Famously a favorite of the Sun King, this has more in common with a red wine than most rosés. First the wine is intended for aging, typically it is released after a good amount of aging (2009 is the current release for Horiot for instance). Second, the color is a good deal darker than the pale salmon hue of most rosés; it’s more of an oeil de perdrix, garnet shade, resembling a light-bodied red. Finally, there’s a real sense of terroir to the wines, the Gôut des Riceys, which reveals itself with bottle age or with plenty of air over the course of an evening; the nose becomes reminiscent of roses while a sapid earthiness emerges on the palate. This aromatic complexity and delicate perfume beckons one in, making it more a wine of contemplation, than your typical vin de soif rosé. This would be a lovely wine to pair with poached salmon and sauce Maltaise.  -John McIlwain

Dragonette Cellars 2014 Santa Barbara County Happy Canyon Rose

We're such fanatics for Dragonette's red Grenache that it seemed prudent to request a bit of their luscious rose! 70% Grenache and 27% Mourvedre from Vogelzang vineyard, hand harvested specifically for the rose, plus a 3% splash of Syrah from Stolpman and John Sebastiano vineyards, whole cluster pressed to neutral French barrels for 5 months. The result is juicy and exhilarating, with watermelon, tart Rainier cherries, and blood orange on the nose and flavors of wild strawberry, ripe musky peaches, tart cranberry, spicy citrus, and a hint of salt and stone. A real treat with fish tacos, pork and poultry (including duck) and the cornucopia of veggies  returning to the farmers' markets right now. Ariana Rolich

Dashe, Mike 2014 Todd Brothers Ranch Zinfandel Rose

Mike Dashe channels the essence of Zinfandel in this rose from the 50 year-old vines planted on steep, red rock soils of Todd Brothers Vineyard in Alexander Valley. Complex, spicy aromas of coriander, cinnamon, rose petals, and red berries continue onto the palate of rich strawberry, tamarind, herbal hibiscus, and fleshy cherry fruit. Smoked fish, pastrami, garlicky short ribs, and roasted vegetables have met their refreshing match! Red wine drinkers will appreciate this style of rose with dishes that typically call for whites: salmon, salads, pestos, and carbonara. Substantial and sultry. Ariana Rolich

Raventós I Blanc 2013 Conca del Riu Anoia de Nit Reserva Rosé

Pepe Raventos stepped outside of the Cava appellation in 2012 to create the Conca del Riu Anoia designation, which is committed to prioritizing the area's indigenous varieties, estate fruit, longer elevage, and biodynamic methods. The de Nit rosé was the first Conca wine and continues to sate and impress us with its lively aromas of pert pink lemonade, tart cranberry, and a hint of pepper; the palate is dry and elegant, with refreshing, bright acidity, flavors of strawberry seeds, musky ripe raspberries, and orange zests, flanking the complex saline and mineral core, stemming from Raventos' calcareous soils, rich with marine fossils. This is an incredibly versatile rose sparkling wine for apéritifs, snacks, richer seafood, and spicy fare. Ariana Rolich

Bermejos 2013 Lanzarote Espumoso Listán Negro Rosado

There may be no greater and geekier pleasure for the Canary Islands fanatic or adventurous drinker than this: Champagne Method sparkling Listan Negro from the eastern-most, oldest, ash-coated Canary island of Lanzarote! In order to contend with the relentless trade winds that sweep the island, vines must be planted at the bottom of volcanic fissures and craters rimmed by stone walls (usually with just one vine at the bottom of each). Yields are insanely low and highlight the devotion of Lanzarote's inhabitants to producing local wines despite the extreme effort required. This wine is complex, fresh, and  fascinating, with tart, crisp cranberry and pink grapefruit, dusty mineral ash, tomato water, and a mood-lifting fizz. I love this wine alongside cured meats and fishes, as well as braised red cabbage and roasted chicken or pork. Ariana Rolich

Delicate, high-toned cherry fruit, subtle mousse notes of lemon peel and vermouth. Brisk with striking acidity and balanced tension, the wine has, nevertheless, a core of sweet, red fruit that makes it one of the more accessible in the lineup from Laherte.
