For a fairly blah month, there certainly are quite a number of holidays of varying significance in February. Rather than trot out any number of different special offers we’ve combined a few different cellar purchases into one Year of the Monkey, Presidents' Day, Valentine's, pre-leap year and any-other-excuse-for-a-cellar-offer extravaganza. While perhaps not as thematically particular as other emails, there are a number of items of interest: mature Burgundy, a nice parcel of Huet Vouvray, gems from the Rhône, Ports, Riojas, and even a few Piedmont and Tuscan selections. Happy hunting!
*This wine is in the warehouse and will not be available for pick-up or delivery until after Labor Day. 2008 is a great vintage for moelleux and demi-sec Vouvray as the high acidity of the vintage gives fabulous brightness and balance to the extra sweetness. The Huet 2008 Haut-Lieu is superb now with terrines, foie gras, vegetable soups, mild cheeses and much more - and don't hesitate to age ten more years.

"Freddy" Mugnier is well known for his Chambolle Musigny wines but his family has owned the reknowned Nuits St Georges 1er Cru "Clos de la Marechale" for generations. For many years it was leased out to Faiveley. Mugnier regained control of the property in 2004 and now the wine shows the finesse of his impeccable work as a winegrower. Red and blue fruits and the spice of Nuits St Georges, great balance and acidity. At a trade tasting in autumn it was the favorite of several Chambers St employees. This wine is good to drink now or over the next 10 years.
Centenaires: Grenache 80%, Syrah 10%, Mourvedre 10%, from vines 30-100 years old; aged in a combination of large old barrels, and 1-3 year old barriques. Bottled unfiltered.
This is only the 3rd vintage that the Ardanza has been classified as "Reserva Especial" during the long history of the La Rioja Alta winery. The other two vintages were 1964 and 1973. That being said, this cuvee lives up to expectations and is a testament to a fantastic vintage. Ardanza is full-bodied, sweet, tangy and savory, with strawberry/plum fruit, mushroom, and notes of herbs from the generous helping of garnacha in the blend. On the palate it is well structured with gorgeous velvety tannins and excellent balance and length. As the great wines of Rioja do, this will surely cellar very well and would stand up to just about any food that you could throw at it. I specifically would pair this with game-birds with a sweet and savory sauce. cb
