Jousset, Lise et Bertrand 2014 Montlouis-sur-Loire Bubulles Pet Nat

Simply put, this is top-shelf Pét-Nat for a picnic-friendly price. From organically farmed Chenin vines (45 years of age on average) in Montlouis-sur-Loire in soils of sand and silex over limestone. All cellar operations are by gravity, without pumping, the fermentaion is in 3 to 6 year-old barriques of 225 and 400 liters. The wine is vibrant straw yellow and adorned with a fine mousse. The nose reveals aromas of ripe pear, Granny Smith, lime flower, creamy lemon with heather honey and stone.. A finely chiseled palate is a bit off-dry with hints of dried pear, apple and anise over a core of saline minerals with terrific length. This is a thirst-quenching Pet-Nat, made without sulfur, that happens to be a serious and elegant wine!

Jousset, Lise et Bertrand 2014 Montlouis-sur-Loire Trait d'Union

The 2014 Trait d'Union is a wonderful demi-sec Chenin from our new friends Lise and Bertrand Jousset in Montlouis. The vines are 60 to 80 years old, on sand and silex soils over limestone giving yields of 20 to 25 hl/ha. Wild yeast fermentation, aging in 1 to 8 year-old barriques. The wine is a lovely pale gold/bronze color with aromas of earth, lemon, honey, brown spice, lime-flower and ripe pear. The palate is round, ripe and delicate with saline mineral flavors blending with lemon compote, white fruits and stone. Dense but light on its feet, this is a beautiful accompaniment to fois gras or pâtés, scallops, veal stew and goat cheeses.

Jousset, Lise et Bertrand 2014 Montlouis-sur-Loire Clos Renards - Singulier

We are very proud to offer the beautiful wines of Lise and Bertrand Jousset, whose goal is to make "living wines" from living soils and healthy vines in a balanced environment. All of their wines share a vivacity and natural complexity making them a joy to drink - due to great farming and careful vinifications with minimal intervention and minimal or zero added sulfur.  The Montlouis "Singulier - Clos aux Renards" is a dry Montlouis made from 60 to 80 year-old Chenin vines on clay soils called "Aubuis" over Turonian limestone. All cellar functions are by gravity without pumping, fermentation is in two and three year-old 400 and 600 liter barrels.

Grange aux Belles 2014 Vin de France Fragile (Chenin Blanc)

Fragile is made from Chenin Blanc farmed organically, the second pass through the vineyard, aged in old barrels with a minimal (10 to 20 mg) dosage of SO2 before bottling. The 2014 is a beautiful natural Chenin with elegant aromas of ripe pear, herbs and minerals, quite subtle; the palate is dense, stony and long, really showing saline minerals in the finish. A lovely wine in the style of Patrick Baudouin and Richard Leroy, highly recommended.

Grange aux Belles 2014 Vin de France La Chausée Rouge

Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Grolleau, eight-day carbonic maceration, with juice drawn off daily, light-body, low alcohol - "we're trying to make Poulsard!" says winemaker Marc Boutin. Named after the vineyard site, a bloody battleground in the War of the Vendee. Nothing bloody about this lovely wine, quite light and pretty with red currant and strawberry fruit, just gorgeous and much too easy-drinking. Serve quite cool with just about anything...

Tournelle 2014 Arbois Ploussard L'Uva Arbosiana

Evelyn and Pascal Clairet craft this cuvée from 20-30-year-old Ploussard vines planted in clay and marl soils. The grapes are then hand-sorted and lightly pressed before undergoing full carbonic maceration in stainless steel tanks. Once this period is over, the juice is racked into neutral oak barrels where it will rest for three to four months before being bottled unfined, unfiltered, and without sulphur. The resulting wine is incredibly light and fresh with enticing aromas of strawberry jam and crushed red flowers. The palate offers more bright red fruits found on the nose, along with minerals and lip-smacking acidity. It is a pure joy to drink slightly chilled before a meal and is great alongside fresh fruit, vegetable dishes, or charcuterie! Tim Gagnon

Val Frison NV (2012) Champagne Brut Nature Lalore Blanc de Blancs

Located in Villes-sur-Ayse in the Aube, the newly renamed Val'Frisson (previously Demarne Frison) has been working organically since 2003 and certfied since 2007. As in the vineyards, the winemaking is decidedly non-interventionist: native yeast frementaion, minimal sulfur, full malolactic fermentation permitted. The Val'Frison Lalore Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs is sourced from two vineyard parcels of different exposures in Les Cotannes whose soils are made up of Portlandian limestone. The 2012 has a pale lemon yellow robe and fine bead, with notes of Meyer lemon, white flowers, and a touch of autolyse  on the nose. The palate is broad and mouth-filling with ginger, lemon peel, and lemon curd notes giving way to a stony sense of minerality on a medium long finish. This is a compelling expression of Chardonnay from Portlandian soils in the Côte de Bar. And as Peter Liem has noted on his (indispensible) Champagneguide.net site, worthy of comparison to Saignée de Sorbée another grower whose single parcel Champagne is especially terroir specific.  (Disgorged 11/14) -John McIlwain

Val Frison NV (2012) Champagne Brut Nature Elion Rosé

Val Frison's 2012 base Brut Nature Rosé Elion is rosé de maceration made of 100% organically farmed Pinot Noir. The grapes undergo carbonic maceration and whole cluster fermentation. The robe is an almost cerise hue of pink.  The nose is malty and spicy, giving way to red fruits, framboise, and crushed herbs. The palate has dark red fruits, cherry pit, spices, and good mineral cut. There is good energy here and the finish builds.  John McIlwain

La Clarine Farm 2014 Sierra Foothills Fiano + Arneis

This cheeky blend of two geographically disparate Italian varietals  (Fiano + Arneis = "FNA", get it?) combines the best of Campania and Piedmont in the Sierra Foothills. White donut peach, honey, dried herbs, golden raisin flavors mingle on the palate with a crisp attack and crunchy minerality.  56% Fiano and 44% Arneis.-Jonas Mendoza

La Clarine Farm 2014 Sierra Foothills Mourvèdre Cedarville Vineyard

Hank Beckmeyer and his French wife, Caroline Hoel, had been working in Germany in the music business, and had caught the wine bug while traveling throughout Europe. Influenced by the ideas of Japanese farmer-philosopher Masanobu Fukuoka and Austrian philosopher-spiritualist Rudolf Steiner, they moved to the United States and  purchased a property in California’s Sierra Foothills in 2001. La Clarine Farm’s winemaking approach is minimalist: neither industrial yeasts, sulfur dioxide, nor new oak are used in the cellar. Cedarville Vineyard is organically farmed, lies upon a south-facing exposure on decomposed granite soils, similar to those in the heartland of the Northern Rhone. With a light yet sinewy texture, this Syrah impresses with dried and stewed black cherry, crushed herbs, leather, and cinnamon stick flavors. -Jonas Mendoza

La Clarine Farm 2014 Sierra Foothills Syrah "sumu kaw"

The Sumu Kaw Vineyard (at nearly 3000') in the Sierra Foothills produces an astonishingly characterful Syrah reminiscent of the Northern Rhone. Darker fruit flavors (blackberry, dried black cherry) meld with  meaty, smoky, and bell pepper undertones. The wine finishes with firm, structured tannins, and a delicately aromatic lift of violets on the back palate.-Jonas Mendoza
