Val Frison NV (2012) Champagne Brut Nature Lalore Blanc de Blancs

Located in Villes-sur-Ayse in the Aube, the newly renamed Val'Frisson (previously Demarne Frison) has been working organically since 2003 and certfied since 2007. As in the vineyards, the winemaking is decidedly non-interventionist: native yeast frementaion, minimal sulfur, full malolactic fermentation permitted. The Val'Frison Lalore Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs is sourced from two vineyard parcels of different exposures in Les Cotannes whose soils are made up of Portlandian limestone. The 2012 has a pale lemon yellow robe and fine bead, with notes of Meyer lemon, white flowers, and a touch of autolyse  on the nose. The palate is broad and mouth-filling with ginger, lemon peel, and lemon curd notes giving way to a stony sense of minerality on a medium long finish. This is a compelling expression of Chardonnay from Portlandian soils in the Côte de Bar. And as Peter Liem has noted on his (indispensible) Champagneguide.net site, worthy of comparison to Saignée de Sorbée another grower whose single parcel Champagne is especially terroir specific.  (Disgorged 11/14) -John McIlwain

Val Frison NV (2012) Champagne Brut Nature Elion Rosé

Val Frison's 2012 base Brut Nature Rosé Elion is rosé de maceration made of 100% organically farmed Pinot Noir. The grapes undergo carbonic maceration and whole cluster fermentation. The robe is an almost cerise hue of pink.  The nose is malty and spicy, giving way to red fruits, framboise, and crushed herbs. The palate has dark red fruits, cherry pit, spices, and good mineral cut. There is good energy here and the finish builds.  John McIlwain

Carmarans, Nicolas 2014 Vin de Pays de l'Aveyron Selves (Chenin)

The wines of Nicolas Carmarans never fail to reflect the natural, rugged beauty of the region from where they are made. A stand out during a recent tasting was Selves made from 100% Chenin Blanc from vines aged anywhere from 5-50 years old that are planted in granitic soils. The nose is very pretty with seashells, white flowers, a touch of smoke, and ripe tropical melon. On the palate it is lean and mineral, complete with mouth-coating, fleshy tropical fruit, a racy acidity, and beautiful tension. Chenin Blanc isn’t usually what comes to mind when thinking of Aveyron, but this is something special. Tim Gagnon

Carmarans, Nicolas 2014 Vin de Pays de l'Aveyron Maximus

2014 is a great vintage for the lovely natural wines of Nicolas Carmarans! Maximus is 100% Fer Servadou (aka Braucol), one of the most interesting varieties of southern France. Heroic organic farming on steep slopes, two week carbonic maceration then six moths in old barriques with 10mg of SO2 a month before bottling. Beautiful, complex aromas of berries, plum, violets, earth and spice, really lovely! The palate is light, long and very pretty with black fruits earth and spice. Serve cool with pork, roast chicken, charcuterie...boudin noir perhaps? Highly recommended!

Jousset, Lise et Bertrand 2014 Montlouis-sur-Loire Bubulles Pet Nat

Simply put, this is top-shelf Pét-Nat for a picnic-friendly price. From organically farmed Chenin vines (45 years of age on average) in Montlouis-sur-Loire in soils of sand and silex over limestone. All cellar operations are by gravity, without pumping, the fermentaion is in 3 to 6 year-old barriques of 225 and 400 liters. The wine is vibrant straw yellow and adorned with a fine mousse. The nose reveals aromas of ripe pear, Granny Smith, lime flower, creamy lemon with heather honey and stone.. A finely chiseled palate is a bit off-dry with hints of dried pear, apple and anise over a core of saline minerals with terrific length. This is a thirst-quenching Pet-Nat, made without sulfur, that happens to be a serious and elegant wine!

Jousset, Lise et Bertrand 2014 Vin de France Exile Blanc

This is a lovely blend of Chenin Blanc and Chardonnay from our friends at Domaine Jousset in Montlouis. Starting with the difficult 2013 vintage, Lise and Bertrand have been purchasing grapes from friends of theirs who also work organically in the vineyard, and the result is the Éxilé! The 2014 bottling shows intriguing aromas of dried pear, apple, citrus, lime-flower, stone and spice, a bit unusual and quite interesting. The palate is round and fresh with white fruits, earth, lemon, caramel and stone with a bit of spice in the long finish. A lovely and versatile natural wine that is a great aperitif and will complement full-flavored fish dishes, chicken and white meats.

Belluard 2012 Vin de Savoie Mont Blanc Brut

Made from Gringet grown at 450m in elevation, this is serious stuff. It spends three years on the lees which results in a rich and textured wine, with delicate aromatics. Orange blossom, pear skin, and granny smith apple rise from the glass, while the palate is much more mineral. It is quite powerful, and would give any Champagne a run for the money in terms of complexity. Tim Gagnon

Belluard 2014 Vin de Savoie Grandes Jorasses

Dominique’s Altesse shows a much more delicate side of this grape than most are familiar with, and I think this is a testament to his careful winemaking process. The vines in this parcel are quite young, and the original vines were sourced from the Dupasquier family in Jongieux, further south in the Savoie. There are very pretty almond, tangerine, honeysuckle, and peach skin aromas filling the nose, and although it is quite round on the palate, it maintains a crazy amount of freshness. A dense mineral core gives way into hints of stone fruits and nuts with a bracing, long, honey-tinged finish. It’s as pleasing viscerally as it is mentally. Tim Gagnon

Belluard 2014 Vin de Savoie Le Feu

Called Le Feu (The Fire) for the bright red, iron-rich clay that litters the incredibly steep vineyards, this is Dominique’s top wine. It is his only single-parcel Gringet cuvee and the vines are situated at 450m in altitude. On the nose it is ethereal and shows bright grapefruit zest, jasmine, and sage with a hint of tart red berries. As far as mountain wines go, this is definitely something special. The palate is textured and mineral with orchard fruits, a gentle salinity, and a long, citrus-tinged finish. There is no doubt that this wine can age, and it is certainly drinking wonderfully now! Belluard 2014 Vin de Savoie Les Alpes

This cuvee is made with Gringet sourced from two parcels, one being rich in yellow marl and the other with more broken-down limestone. It spends about six months aging in concrete eggs (separated by each different terroir) before being blended together in stainless steel tanks. It is exquisite on the nose with purple wildflower, green tea, honeydew melon, citrus, earthy blossom, and a distinct note of red berries. The palate is pure and sharp with a deep minerality, stone fruits, and a vigorous acidity. I can never get enough of this wine. Tim Gagnon

Dominique Lucas (Vignes de Paradis) 2014 Terroir du Leman Un Matin Face

Made from Chasselas planted in clay-rich soils and raised in concrete egg, I find this wine to offer more in terms of layers of texture and in density than his other cuvées. It still maintains a ravishing acidity and ample minerality like all of his wines, but seems a bit more open aromatically with hints of crème brülée, almond milk, and zesty lemon meringue. These luscious aromas coalesce once on the palate with more succulent citrus and sea minerals coming forward. This would be fantastic with hearty poultry dishes (Thanksgiving anyone?) that balance savory and sweet, or with seared monkfish with parsnip purée and hazelnuts for the adventurous home cook. Dominique Lucas (Vignes de Paradis) 2014 IGP Vin de Savoie Pinot Gris

I don’t often find myself drinking or even thinking about Pinot Gris, but this one is exceptional. It has all of the high-toned, mineral purity that I’ve come to know from this grape with bright, airy citrus pith, purple flowers, and a hint of soft blueberries on the nose, yet there is something extra texturally that gives this wine depth and really sets it apart. Dominique Lucas (Vignes de Paradis) 2014 Pays d'Allobrogie Chardonnay

A thoroughly elegant wine that truly shows its Savoie roots! This wine is fermented and aged half in concrete egg à la Belluard, his very good friend, and half in used barrel. The result is a much more chiseled and ethereal interpretation of Chardonnay that you don’t get in either the Jura or Burgundy. Think soft aromas of orchard fruit, lemon curd, and mountain wildflower on the nose, yet the palate is much more invigorating and opens up with a bit of lush fruit anchored by laser sharp acidity, a slightly waxy, mouth-coating texture, and tangy minerals. Try this with sushi made from fattier fish. Tim Gagnon

Dominique Lucas (Vignes de Paradis) 2014 Savoie Chasselas de Marin

This was perhaps my favorite wine I had tasted while visiting. The Chasselas for this cuvée is planted in granitic soils with glacial morass definitively making it the most mineral-driven of his wines, but it doesn’t lack any of the opulence found in the others. Deep aromas of yellow citrus fruit still on the tree and a hint of honeysuckle rise from the glass. On the palate it opens with honey-tinged, creamy tropical fruit and bright citrus and gives way to a rush of minerals that lasts seemingly forever. All of his wines seem to build on the finish, but this is downright impressive. Tim Gagnon
