Vivent Les Vins Libres at The Ten Bells

Best of The Big Glou and Vivent les Vins Libres!

Share

Hundreds of great vignerons invaded New York over the past week, showing their beautiful natural wines at The Big Glou at the Wythe Hotel and Vivent les Vins Libres at Racines NY. Both events were a huge success and many dinners, parties and extra-curricular tastings helped spread the vinous joy all over town. Of course Chambers Street has been championing the work of growers like these since we opened in 2001 (and before!) and we are happy to offer a list of some of our favorite wines that were poured at these great events. Those of you who attended the shows, look at your notes to see if your picks are on the list - if not, we'll be glad to source them for you, if available. And for those of you unable to attend, take this opportunity to browse and select from this outstanding list of organic, biodynamic and natural wines!

La Clarine Farm 2014 Sierra Foothills Fiano + Arneis

This cheeky blend of two geographically disparate Italian varietals  (Fiano + Arneis = "FNA", get it?) combines the best of Campania and Piedmont in the Sierra Foothills. White donut peach, honey, dried herbs, golden raisin flavors mingle on the palate with a crisp attack and crunchy minerality.  56% Fiano and 44% Arneis.-Jonas Mendoza

La Clarine Farm 2014 Sierra Foothills Mourvèdre Cedarville Vineyard

Hank Beckmeyer and his French wife, Caroline Hoel, had been working in Germany in the music business, and had caught the wine bug while traveling throughout Europe. Influenced by the ideas of Japanese farmer-philosopher Masanobu Fukuoka and Austrian philosopher-spiritualist Rudolf Steiner, they moved to the United States and  purchased a property in California’s Sierra Foothills in 2001. La Clarine Farm’s winemaking approach is minimalist: neither industrial yeasts, sulfur dioxide, nor new oak are used in the cellar. Cedarville Vineyard is organically farmed, lies upon a south-facing exposure on decomposed granite soils, similar to those in the heartland of the Northern Rhone. With a light yet sinewy texture, this Syrah impresses with dried and stewed black cherry, crushed herbs, leather, and cinnamon stick flavors. -Jonas Mendoza

La Clarine Farm 2014 Sierra Foothills Syrah "sumu kaw"

The Sumu Kaw Vineyard (at nearly 3000') in the Sierra Foothills produces an astonishingly characterful Syrah reminiscent of the Northern Rhone. Darker fruit flavors (blackberry, dried black cherry) meld with  meaty, smoky, and bell pepper undertones. The wine finishes with firm, structured tannins, and a delicately aromatic lift of violets on the back palate.-Jonas Mendoza

Ruth Lewandowski 2014 Mendocino Gibson Ranch 'Naomi'

Evan Lewandoski has accumulated winemaking experience all over the world, but decided to return to Utah to explore the potential of its climate and variegated soil types. The fruit is sourced from Gibson Ranch in Mendocino County's McDowell Valley, trucked to Utah, whole-cluster pressed, and fermented in concrete tank. On the nose, there are notes of lemon rind and peach skin notes; on the palate, flavors of white flowers, creamy pineapple, and ripe nectarine mingle with saline and leesy undertones. Angular and bright, this Grenache Gris would be pair well with roast chicken and even fleshier fish like cod or turbot. Jonas Mendoza

Dashe 2014 Potter Valley McFadden Farms Dry Riesling

Organic, bright, dry, chalky, Riesling from mountain slopes in California’s Mendocino county – what’s not to like? The 2014 Riesling has a mineral richness that I don’t usually associate with the west coast, but white wines from winemakers like Steve Edmunds and Michael Dashe have provided me with liquid evidence that I should reevaluate my biases. Dashe, Mike 2014 Todd Brothers Ranch Zinfandel Rose

Mike Dashe channels the essence of Zinfandel in this rose from the 50 year-old vines planted on steep, red rock soils of Todd Brothers Vineyard in Alexander Valley. Complex, spicy aromas of coriander, cinnamon, rose petals, and red berries continue onto the palate of rich strawberry, tamarind, herbal hibiscus, and fleshy cherry fruit. Smoked fish, pastrami, garlicky short ribs, and roasted vegetables have met their refreshing match! Red wine drinkers will appreciate this style of rose with dishes that typically call for whites: salmon, salads, pestos, and carbonara. Substantial and sultry. Ariana Rolich

Barranco Oscuro 2012 Andalucía Brut Nature

A bit offbeat and totally lovely, this is a blanc de blancs from Vigiriego, a local white grape that grows in the mountains of Granada. Lemon-lime, apricot oil, white flower, and sea salt aromas; vaporous citrus, spicy oils, coriander seed, coastal brine, chalky tannin, and a fine, beady bubble electrify the palate. Taut and racy, impressively composed, with no added SO2 at any time. Ariana Rolich

Barranco Oscuro 2014 Andalucia Traviesa

Although quite weighty in texture, La Traviesa Blanco is a charming, lighthearted, exuberant offering from the pioneering winemakers at Barranco Oscuro. Made from 100% Vigiriega, the historically overlooked indigenous varietal championed by the bodega’s founder Manuel Valenzuela, the grapes are grown in poor schist soil at a dizzying altitude of 1280 meters, fermented in stainless steel and the wine  aged for six months in large wooden barrels. Slightly saline, slightly honeyed, distinctly toasty with hints of tropical fruit, La Traviesa Blanco is a perfect choice for Chardonnay lovers looking for a detour, or anyone interested in exploring the unique and expressive wines of Granada.  No sulphur added. Barranco Oscuro 2010 Andalucia Garnata

Made of 100% Garnacha from 30-35 year old vines rooted  in the poor, stony, schist soil of Granada (which, in ancient times was called Garnata), the very name of this  wine from high in the mountains of Andalucia is an intriguing, poetic riddle. Concentrated notes of dark plum, game, earth and  spice are offset by structure-lending tannins from aging in old French barrels in this wine of exceptional  beauty and substance. Sydney Snyder

This is the darker of Ramon Saavedra's reds, from ungrafted vines of Tempranillo, Cabernet, Merlot and Syrah. Dense, with some earth and subtle tannins. As with all of Ramon's wines, the Iradei has great balance and length, with very pure fruit, and a backbone of minerality. Eben Lillie

Marenas 2014 Cordoba-Andalucia Monastrell

A beguiling introduction to the blossoming natural wine culture of Andalucia, this raw expression of Monastrell is dominated by concentrated, earthy overtones of petrol, smoke and fois gras complimenting a core of dark plum and strawberry fruit.  Unfiltered, with zero added sulphur and vinified entirely in stainless steel, the wine pulses with a bold, mineral intensity derived from the moisture retaining chalky albariza soil which is critical to growing healthy grapes in the exceptionally hot, dry climate of Cordoba. Marenas 2014 Andalucía Mediacapa

In the category of life’s simple pleasures, it’s hard to top the vernal scent of freshly washed grape skins followed by the sensation of a tiny, cool globe rolling across the palate on a hot summer’s day. While strikingly powerful and intense in texture, exhibiting the nutty, earthiness of a dry sherry, owing to marine influences and the moisture retaining  soil of Cordoba, this unfortified, unsulphured expression of Pedro Ximenez is alive with the pure, unmasked perfume of crisp green grapes, sea air, herbs and minerals. Enjoy this extraordinary wine with your next hearty seafood dinner or simply open it up to experience something utterly unique.  Sydney Snyder

Partida Creus 2014 Catalunya Massís de Bonastre Cartoixa Vermell

Vinified as a white wine with no added sulphur, this glamorous, wild creature is made from the all but forgotten local varietal Cartoixa Vermell (aka Red Xarello) from an abandoned plot revitalized and nurtured by the winemakers at Partida Creus. Somewhere between gold and pale mauve in color, the texture becomes increasingly lithe and diaphanous as the wine comes up to temperature with flickering, elusive notes of citrus peel, wild strawberry, cinnamon and iodine. Utterly magical. Sydney Snyder

Partida Creus 2014 Catalunya Massís de Bonastre Xarello

Xarello is a fascinating variety, which provides structure and complexity in our favorite Cavas and Spanish sparklers, or vinified into dry, still, minerally whites.  Partida Creus' Xarello is fermented and aged in stainless steel with about 6 months on the lees before bottling, for a  supple, musky take on the grape, with aromas of golden grapefruit, salty cheeserind, lemon seed, wet wool, salty earth and wild flowers; lemon balm, white pepper, woodsy herbs, and grapefruit mingle on the palate with bright, crunchy pineapple and juicy lychee fruits, alongside the tannin and mineral elements that act as a stimulant iin Xarello.  No added SO2, with a "natural" wildness and texture, yet clean start to finish. Clos Fantine 2013 Faugères Cuvée Tradition (No SO2)

A deep, dark and exuberant wine from Faugères! Located just outside of the village Lenthéric, the 28-hectare Clos Fantine estate is run by three siblings Carole, Corinne and Olivier Andrieu. They built their winery in 2000, three years after their father’s passing, and have been making wines the honest way since. All wines are made without any added SO2 and spend 18-20 months in concrete vat, depending on the vintage. The 2013 Cuvee Tradition is made of Carignan, Grenache, and Syrah and, although a bit more dark and dense than the 2012, still has lifted black berry fruits, minerals, and a touch of garrigue. This wine is made to be served with a slight chill alongside all kinds of grilled meats. Tim Gagnon

Clos Fantine 2013 Faugères Cuvée Courtiol

Each year the Andrieu family chooses the best grapes of the vintage for their Cuvée Courtial. In 2013 it's predominantly Grenache, grown in their beautiful organic vineyards in Faugères. The grapes are hand-harvsted into small crates, the fermentation is long and slow with no pigeage or remontage and the wine is bottled with no fining, filtration or added SO2. Dense red/black color, quite "sauvage' aromas of blackberry, cherry liqueur, spice, roast meat and clove. With aeration the aromas become more pure with red/black fruit liqueur and floral notes. The palate shows deep blackberry fruit with hints of spice, licorice and dark chocolate, finishing with earthy acidity. This is a beautiful natural wine to be enjoyed over the next ten years with grilled meats, stews, Moroccan tagines and full-flavored cheeses. Decant one to two hours in advance if drinking now.

Carmarans, Nicolas 2014 Vin de Pays de l'Aveyron Selves (Chenin)

The wines of Nicolas Carmarans never fail to reflect the natural, rugged beauty of the region from where they are made. A stand out during a recent tasting was Selves made from 100% Chenin Blanc from vines aged anywhere from 5-50 years old that are planted in granitic soils. The nose is very pretty with seashells, white flowers, a touch of smoke, and ripe tropical melon. On the palate it is lean and mineral, complete with mouth-coating, fleshy tropical fruit, a racy acidity, and beautiful tension. Chenin Blanc isn’t usually what comes to mind when thinking of Aveyron, but this is something special. Tim Gagnon

Carmarans, Nicolas 2014 IGP Aveyron Mauvais Temps

"Le Mauvais Temps" is a vineyard near the hamlet of Le Bruel, Campouriez, Aveyron - more or less the middle of nowhere in south-central France. The wine is made from 40% Fer Servadou, and 40% Negret de Banhars with Cabernet Franc, organic farming, whole cluster fermentation, 10 mg only of SO2, 11% alcohol. Lovely deep raspberry, spice, and earth aromas. The palate is light but round and deep with spicy berry fruits. This is a beautiful natural wine, just 100% delicious, balanced and pretty! Breton, Catherine et Pierre 2014 Bourgueil Trinch

This delicious Bourgueil is from young vines on clay and gravel soils over limestone, harvested by hand into small baskets and vinified to extract the primary aromas. Trinch is particularly yummy in 2014 as the sunny weather at the end of the season brought ripeness and lush fruit but without excess weight or tannin. The color is dense red/black with deep aromas of blackberry, violet and bitter chocolate with a hint of roast meat. Intense black fruits on the palate with earthy, saline minerals, musk and citrus - nicely balanced at 12.5% alcohol and with bright acidity. This is a great thirst-quenching Bourgueil to serve cool with charcuterie, roast chicken, pork and full-flavored cheeses.

Breton, Catherine et Pierre 2012 Bourgueil Clos Senechal

The Breton's Bourgueil Clos Sénéchal is always one of my favorite Loire reds. From a great terroir in mid-slope on clay over limestone "tuffeau." The vines are 30 to 45 years old, there is a three-week alcoholic fermentation with wild yeasts, no added SO2. Aging is in old foudres with minimal SO2 added before bottling. The wine is relatively light with subtle aromas and strong chalky acids - remarkably pretty when young, it ages beautifully for ten to twenty years depending on the vintage. The tiny yields in 2012 brought a bit more concentration and color but the wine retains it's light character with superb, complex aromas of ripe blackberry, red-currant, violets, earth, plum-skin and spice. The palate is light but intense with black fruits, very firm citrusy acids and a long finish of ripe berries and saline minerals. Beautiful now, best perhaps between 2019 and 2025-2030. Breton, Catherine et Pierre 2010 Bourgueil Nuits D'Ivresse 1.5 L

From old vines on the upper slopes of Bourgueil, where the clay over Turonien chalk gives magnificent long-lasting wines. Vinified with zero sulfur-dioxide, the 2010 Nuits D'Ivresse has deep aromas of strawberry confit, earth and spice. The palate is round but balanced and fresh. Buy a case and drink half now, wait 5 to 8 years for the rest. Tarlant NV Champagne Brut Zero (2008 base)

A blend of 1/3 Chardonnay, 1/3 Pinot Noir, and 1/3 Pinot Meunier, the base wine comes from the classic 2008 vintage. For a Brut Nature (Dosage: 0 g/l), this Tarlant combines bracing acidity with remarkable fruit-forwardness. Lemon pith, preserved lemon, red apple flesh and red apple skin flavors sweep across the palate with broad brush strokes and a pleasing effervescence. With big flavors and deep cut, this Champagne definitely needs food to accompany it: caviar or smoked salmon anyone? (Disgorged: 09/14) - Jonas Mendoza

Tarlant NV Champagne Brut Rosé Zero

Tarlant pulls off smart austerity with enough charm, character and nuanced flavor to make for compelling and food-oriented Champagne. The NV Rosé (in this case based on the superb 2008 vintage) shows off red fruits such as currant and raspberry, which are interestingly contrasted by a spicy note that borders on being peppery. Not overtly creamy, this Rosé is extrememly minerally and elegant. (85% Chardonnay, 15% Pinot Noir -- non-dosé -- disgorged 6/13)

Texier 2012 CdR St. Julien en St. Alban Domaine Pergaud Vieille Serine

"True to the all-around charm of 2012, this is probably the easiest to drink iteration of this wine since we first made it in 2009. From the start, this wine is open and likable, despite the typical density of Vieilles Serines. Its acidity is lower than in previous vintages, so we don’t see it as a wine to age for too long. Aged 18 months in large wood vats (2,500 liters), SO2 adjusted to a total of 20 mg/l at bottling. 4,924 bottles and 120 magnums" - Eric Texier

Texier 2013 Côte-Rôtie Vieilles Vignes

This is Eric Texier's second harvest from a parcel of old vines on gneiss in Semons, at the southern end of the appellation. "Ridiculous, minuscule yield" says Eric. Aged for 12 months in 5-year-old Burgundy barrels, SO2 adjusted to a total of 35 mg/l at bottling. 556 bottles and 12 magnums produced. The wine shows very subtle aromas of black-raspberry, violet, white pepper, earth and musk. The palate is intense, but relatively light, even austere with cool acidity and very structured berry fruits. The finish is tight with red fruits and firm citrusy acids. Three days later the wine is really quite elegant with blueberry, olive, licorice and smoke appearing in the nose, the palate is more mineral and meaty with blackberry, slate, olive and citrus. This is a very well-built Côte-Rôtie that should be a lovely old-school wine when mature. David Lillie

Matassa 2014 Vin de Pays Cotes Catalan Coume de l'Olla

Those who aren’t familiar with the wines of Tom Lubbe in the Roussillon, take note. Tom, who is originally from New Zealand and grew up in South Africa, started his estate here in the village of Calce in 2003 after working for a winery in South Africa and a 3 –year stint at Domaine Gauby. All work in the mostly 60-120-year-old vines is done without chemicals, and he is certified organic by ECOCERT. Coume de l’Olla is an exotic blend of Grenache Noir, Grenache Gris, and Maccabeu planted in schist and marl soils, fermented whole-cluster with native yeasts in concrete vats. The nose is energetic and intoxicatingly pretty, with bright red flowers, orange pith, red berries, and brown spice. The palate is lithe with more red berries, a touch of pine, ample minerality, and silky tannins. This is a wine of finesse and freshness, and is among my favorites from the Roussillon. It has enough richness to pair with heartier, meaty foods this Thanksgiving for those who opt out of the traditional dishes (think steak, game bird, or wintry stews), but would also be a perfect pairing with turkey. Bonhomme, Pierre-Olivier 2014 Vin de France La Tesniere

Pineau D'Aunis with about 10% Gamay, from a long-time organically farmed vineyard on a parcel that is quite close to the famed Clos Roche Blanche vines. Balsamic aromas mix with herbs and flowers, and a fresh, chalky mouth feel and high toned acidity give way to a long mineral finish. Take an obscure grape in the hands of a dedicated natural winemaker, and the result is a fascinating wine that is as thought-provoking as it is fun to drink. Bravo to Pierre-O for a great vintage of the Tesniere.

Laherte Frères NV Champagne Saignée Rosé Les Beaudiers Vieilles Vignes

Entirely Pinot Meunier, this is a notably unique rosé. It's incredibly vinous and is wine — serious wine — before it's rosé or Champagne. But as a saignée Champagne it has delicacy and poise, and yet is serious and structured. It's most curiously savory — our flavor associates included soft cheese, herbs, ferns, sausage, and spices. It is wonderfully dry with chalky minerality on the finish. Not a party Champagne, but one for serious consideration and engagement. Worth contemplation by any serious wine or Champagne lover. MSB

From low-yielding 60 to 70 year-old vines. Wild-yeast semi-carbonic maceration, without addition of SO2, aged in 1 to 4 year old barrels. Light garnet color, complex ethereal aromas of raspberry and strawberry with spice, earth and citrus. Very mineral, textured palate with firm acidity showing plum and black fruits, light but persistent with a long finish of berry fruits with spice, earth, citrus and saline minerals. Not a fruit bomb, but a complex wine of terroir. 12% alcohol. Decant if drinking now, best after three to five years.

Ecu (Bossard & Van Herck) 2014 Muscadet Sèvre et Maine Granite

The Domaine de l'Ecu "Granite" is always among the greatest of Muscadets and a testament to the heroic efforts of Guy Bossard - certified organic in 1975 and Biodynamic in 1998. Frequently a bit musty and closed in it's youth, the 2014 Granite shows surprisingly ripe aromas of dried pear, lime-flower, candied almond, citrus and stone. (On day two, the aromas have become more elegant, complex and quite beautiful) There is ample cool acidity on the palate framing the complex white fruits, stone, citrus and almond flavors that continue on the long very mineral finish. This is a great vintage for Granite - absolutely wonderful now and over the next fifteen years or more...

Ecu (Guy Bossard) 2014 Muscadet Sèvre et Maine Orthogneiss

Orthogneiss - metamorphosed granite, high in iron and magnesium, in this case a vineyard with shallow topsoils of clay, gravel and sand on which grow 50 year-old vines, on a south-east facing slope, certified organic since 1975 and biodynamic since 1998. Hand harvested, pneumatic press, wild yeast fermentation, no pumping, 18 months elevage sur lie. 2014 is an excellent vintage for Orthogneiss. Aromas of citrus peel, pear, apple, almond, lime flower, stone and earth with a certain "musty" character. (it is Muscadet after all) The palate is dense with saline minerals, citrus and pear, really chrystalline and with terrific length. A beautiful Muscadet to drink now with shellfish, cod, flounder and mild cheeses. Best perhaps 2020 to 2030 with a more complex cuisine and aged cheeses.

Sulauze 2015 Vin de France Cochon (Arrives April 7)

Lapalu 2012 Brouilly La Croix des Rameaux

From a plot of 80 plus year-old vines, aged in used barriques. A bit lighter than the Côte Brouilly, showing lovely high-toned black raspberry, wild strawberry and blood orange — really complex and elegant. The palate has deep black raspberry and cherry fruit with bitter herbs, citrus and mineral flavors and fabulous length. Really a complete wine with lovely fruit, terrific minerality and balance, probably best 2018- 2023, but delicious now as well...

Buisson, Henri & Gilles 2012 St. Romain Blanc Sous la Velle

Sous Velle, comprised of limestone, clay, and marls produces Chardonnay which is vibrant and fairly muscular. (It is also home to a beautiful wild cherry tree whose blossoms perfume the air should you be lucky enough visit in the spring when it blooms.) The 2012 vintage is floral, yellow-fruited and a hint leesy on the nose with hints of nectarine and pear skin. On the palate the wine is amalgam of ripe pear, fine acids, zesty acidity, and has a savory sense of minerality. There's great energy here with a pungent core of stoniness beneath the fruit. Really fun to drink now with a roasted chicken or baked halibut, this should knit further with a couple years in the bottle and pair beautifully with a washed-rind cheese such as Epoisses or Grayson. Le Sot de L'Ange 2013 Azay-le-Rideau Rouge G

Quentin crafts this pure vin de soif from Grolleau and Gamay grown in clay over silica soils. His dogmatism for perfectly clean, fresh, and delicious wines of nature is as apparent in his farming practices (his estate has been certified biodynamic for over 10 years) as it is in the cellar where all fermentations occur naturally and no SO2 is used for the red wines; a miniscule amount for the whites. The grapes co-ferment whole cluster in stainless steel tanks with the Gamay on top of the Grolleau to offset the greenness of the Grolleau stems and a blanket of CO2 is put into the tank. This wine is enticing on the nose with dark plum, black cherry, cola, and a touch of pepper. Served slightly chilled, it goes down much too easy, but does have a fair amount of grip. I’m thinking that this would be great with burgers, pork rillettes, or perhaps even grilled salmon. Tim Gagnon

Le Sot de L'Ange 2014 Azay-le-Rideau La Couture

Made from Grolleau vines planted in 1954! This wine shows the serious side of Grolleau, a grape that is a darling of the natural wine world and oftentimes goes into relatively simple, easy-drinking cuvées, both red and rosé. This is not to say that this wine doesn’t go down easy, but speaks more about the fact that it is incredibly structured with terrific length and depth. Lip-smacking berry fruits and cool watermelon aromas are backed by a delicate spice reminiscent of white pepper, clove, and hibiscus. On the palate it is firm with an enlivening acidity, and a seemingly never-ending finish. I would put this on the short list for a year-round rosé! Tim Gagnon

Le Sot de L'Ange 2014 Azay-le-Rideau Sec Symbole

Quentin bottles this Chenin Blanc at the end of March/early April as he thinks this is the best way to retain freshness and tension. After tasting multiple bottles of this over the past few months, I wouldn’t disagree! This wine has elegant and understated aromas of honeysuckle, stone fruit, and Granny Smith apple. On the palate it is decidedly chiseled, mineral, and crisp with a hint of fresh stone fruit on the back end. This would be perfect with lobster risotto or sea bream with roasted tomatoes and coriander. It would also be a great substitution for Muscadet while downing a tray of oysters! Tim Gagnon

Dominique Lucas (Vignes de Paradis) 2014 Terroir du Leman Un Matin Face

Made from Chasselas planted in clay-rich soils and raised in concrete egg, I find this wine to offer more in terms of layers of texture and in density than his other cuvées. It still maintains a ravishing acidity and ample minerality like all of his wines, but seems a bit more open aromatically with hints of crème brülée, almond milk, and zesty lemon meringue. These luscious aromas coalesce once on the palate with more succulent citrus and sea minerals coming forward. This would be fantastic with hearty poultry dishes (Thanksgiving anyone?) that balance savory and sweet, or with seared monkfish with parsnip purée and hazelnuts for the adventurous home cook. Dominique Lucas (Vignes de Paradis) 2014 Savoie Chasselas de Marin

This was perhaps my favorite wine I had tasted while visiting. The Chasselas for this cuvée is planted in granitic soils with glacial morass definitively making it the most mineral-driven of his wines, but it doesn’t lack any of the opulence found in the others. Deep aromas of yellow citrus fruit still on the tree and a hint of honeysuckle rise from the glass. On the palate it opens with honey-tinged, creamy tropical fruit and bright citrus and gives way to a rush of minerals that lasts seemingly forever. All of his wines seem to build on the finish, but this is downright impressive. Tim Gagnon

Dominique Lucas (Vignes de Paradis) 2014 Pays d'Allobrogie Chardonnay

A thoroughly elegant wine that truly shows its Savoie roots! This wine is fermented and aged half in concrete egg à la Belluard, his very good friend, and half in used barrel. The result is a much more chiseled and ethereal interpretation of Chardonnay that you don’t get in either the Jura or Burgundy. Think soft aromas of orchard fruit, lemon curd, and mountain wildflower on the nose, yet the palate is much more invigorating and opens up with a bit of lush fruit anchored by laser sharp acidity, a slightly waxy, mouth-coating texture, and tangy minerals. Try this with sushi made from fattier fish. Tim Gagnon

COS 2013 IGT Sicilia Pithos

COS has one of the largest clay amphorae cellars in the world, with at least 150  buried underground. This ancient method allows for the essential interplay of oxygen during fermentation and ageing without imparting any of it's own  flavors. The neutral  250 and 400-litre vessels have become a signature of the house style and allow the native Sicilian grapes and terroir full, true expression in the wine.  'Pithos' is a classic  Cerasuolo di Vittoria blend (60% Nero d’Avola to 40% Frappato) that results in a freshly fruited, lively, and distinctly umami-accented wine. Delicious with a slight chill! Karina Mackow

Vino di Anna 2014 Vino da Tavola Palmento (Etna)

The winery of Vino di Anna sits on the North side of Mount Etna in Sicily and is where winemakers Anna Martens and Eric Narioo bring their wine to life.  The region is destructively beautiful.  Mount Etna remains an active volcano, supplying the high elevated vineyards with mineral rich soil blackened by decomposed lava.  Needless to say, harvesting here can be quite a challenge, but the reward is the Palmento Rosso. This wine is made from a blend of organically farmed grapes including Nerello Mascalese , Nerello Cappuccio, Alicante and the indigenous white grapes Minella, Catarratto, Insolia, which are crushed by foot and spend 7 months on the lees. It is not fined or filtered and minimal sulfur is added at bottling.  The result is a light, fruit forward, and expressive wine.  The palate showcases tart, juicy raspberry, lemon zest, crisp acidity and an understated savory quality.  Tannins are present, but soft.  A natural wine of terroir that is as unique as its landscape. Bonavita 2012 Faro

From the northeastern side of Sicily near Messina Giovanni Scarfone produces this wonderfully earthy and complex red. Comprised of indigenous grapes Nerello Mascalese, Nerello Cappuccio, and the less known Nocera variety, Faro is a wine that combines pretty red fruits, floral notes with powerful minerality. The 2012 has plum, dried rose petal, and smoky notes on the nose. The palate balances the plummy fruit, meaty savory soil flavors and a rich, chewy structure. The Nocera adds acidic lift and freshness to the wine which ages quite gracefully. This has the structure to stand up to pasta with a lamb ragu, short ribs, or roasted meats and will soften and mellow with age to pair nicely with aged cheeses. Essential for Sicilian wine lovers and worthy of a look for fans of earthy Pommard and Nuits St. Georges. John McIlwain

Foradori 2013 Vigneti delle Dolomiti Teroldego

Teroldego is a relatively unknown Italian grape variety that hails from the Dolomite mountains in the far North of Italy. It's full of peppery alpine minerality, and dense, plummy somewhat Syrah-like fruit. In Elisabetta Foradori's talented hands the Teroldego vine truly creates something special through very low yields and passionate agriculture. A wine with plenty to offer to both the hardcore wine geek and the traditionalist.

Foradori 2014 IGT Vignetti delle Dolomiti Fontanasanta Manzoni Bianco

Manzoni Bianco is a cross between Pinot Bianco and Riesling developed by Luigi Manzoni in the 1920 and 30s; it combines the florality and lift of the Riesling grape with the brighter citrus fruit of Pinot Bianco. Elisabetta Foradori farms about 3 hectares of this variety in the iron-rich limestone soils of the Alto-Adige at 400 meters above sea level. One week of skin contact plus a year of aging in acacia casks lends a deep, almost honeyed texture and subtle tannic presence underneath notes of cider, honeysuckle, red apple skins, pear, almond and pineapple. Montesecondo 2014 IGT Rosso Toscana

A great vintage for the Toscana Rosso by Silvio Messana. Lovely Sangiovese fruit, quite dense and earthy. Silvio farms organically, ferments with wild yeasts and bottles unfiltered. This wine seems to improve with each vintage, the problem is that Silvio doesn't make enough of it.

Ronchi di Cialla 2014 Colli Orientali del Friuli Ribolla Gialla

Ronchi di Cialla’s Ribolla Gialla is an interesting wine and a great opportunity to try one of Italy’s lesser known white varieties. Upon opening it is relatively subdued on the nose, showing light aromas of golden apples and white peach. With air it becomes more complex with white pepper and floral notes. On the palate it is more effusive, leading with mineral acidity and flavors of apple and light, woody herbs piqued by a touch of beeswax. Substantial and textured  with a long finish, this wine is both fresh and complex. Best served with scallops in brown butter sauce and fresh spring herbs or an entree of stuffed Sicilian squid. Busch, Clemens 2013 Mosel Vom Grauen Schiefer Riesling Trocken

Vom Grauen Schiefer is Busch's counterpart to Vom Roten Schiefer -- a step up from the basic Riesling Trocken and all grown on grey slate. The aromatics are classic Busch; rich citrus oils, dark minerals and a hint of vanillin. On the palate the wine has great acidity and lightness, with stony white fruits and beautiful mineral flavors with lovely density and length. A great glass of Riesling at a reasonable price!

Immich-Batterieberg 2012 Mosel Zeppwingert Riesling

Finally, Zeppwingert. Gernot only has .5 hectares and it's directly next to Batterieberg. It's a terraced, ungrafted, old-vine section, and the vines used to belong to our friends at Weiser-Künstler until they sold to Kollmann. As is becoming a theme for this vintage, it's drier than in the past and has great depth, precision and superb length. -jfr

This shows less citrus notes than the other bottlings from this vintage and is instead voluptuous and mouth-watering, with more ripe pear. Enticing, savory, and fragrant with wet stones and a dark, sultry attitude. 100 year-old vines from a small parcel of just 8 terraces. JK

Immich-Batterieberg 2013 Mosel C.A.I. Riesling Trocken

Named in honor of Carl August Immich, 19th century owner of the estate and the man purported to have used gunpowder-filled demolition charges to create the estate's craggy, slate, sloped monopole, Batterieberg; the C.A.I is a staff and customer favorite for zippy, dry-tasting Riesling. Sporting a pale straw yellow color in the glass, the nose offers aromas of lemon blossom, lemon grass, and sage. The palate is lifted by serious core of minerality that carries notes of tart lemon sorbet, verbena, and lime zest through to a pointedly tart finish. Delicious, daily Riesling!

Val Frison NV (2012) Champagne Brut Nature Lalore Blanc de Blancs

Located in Villes-sur-Ayse in the Aube, the newly renamed Val'Frisson (previously Demarne Frison) has been working organically since 2003 and certfied since 2007. As in the vineyards, the winemaking is decidedly non-interventionist: native yeast frementaion, minimal sulfur, full malolactic fermentation permitted. The Val'Frison Lalore Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs is sourced from two vineyard parcels of different exposures in Les Cotannes whose soils are made up of Portlandian limestone. The 2012 has a pale lemon yellow robe and fine bead, with notes of Meyer lemon, white flowers, and a touch of autolyse  on the nose. The palate is broad and mouth-filling with ginger, lemon peel, and lemon curd notes giving way to a stony sense of minerality on a medium long finish. This is a compelling expression of Chardonnay from Portlandian soils in the Côte de Bar. And as Peter Liem has noted on his (indispensible) Champagneguide.net site, worthy of comparison to Saignée de Sorbée another grower whose single parcel Champagne is especially terroir specific.  (Disgorged 11/14) -John McIlwain
