Over the past two weeks, we have been fortunate to host many of our favorite Spanish winemakers, who traveled to New York to present their wines at the wildly successful natural wine fair, the Big Glou. Enthusiasm for their wines and stories was overwhelming and we thank everyone who attended our in-store tastings and events! The Big Glou is over now, but our celebration of sensational Spanish wine will continue next week with a special pair of biodynamic winegrowers: Joan Asens from Orto Vins in Montsant and Miguel Hornillos of Hornillos Ballesteros in the Ribera del Duero. 

I recall vividly my first experience with Orto Vins, a trio of wines purchased on the recommendation of a Barcelona wine retailer. They were powerful varietal expressions of Samsó (Carignan), Ull de Llebre (Tempranillo), and Garnatxa Peluda, which invited contemplation and unfolded with intensity and grace over many days. I toted the open bottles along on my travels and sipped and studied them every night until it was time to fly home.

Years later, this fascination persists as the range of Orto Vins evolves and expands. We encourage you to experience the wines for yourself! Winemaker Joan Asens will join us this coming Tuesday, March 8th, for an in-store tasting from 5 till 7pm. Joining him will be another talented grower-winemaker, Miguel Hornillos of Bodegas Hornillos Ballesteros, whose wines exhibit the elegance and complexity of old-vine Tinto Fino (Tempranillo), farmed organically and biodynamically at over 800 meters elevation in the Ribera del Duero.

Following the in-store tasting, we invite you to join us in the private dining room of Toro NYC (85 10th Ave; New York, NY 10011) for a special 4-course menu of oysters, hamachi crudo, lamb, and Iberico suckling pig, designed by Chef de Cuisine Kyle Eakins and Wine Director Caitlin Doonan to pair with the wines of Orto Vins and Hornillos Ballesteros.
