Koehler-Ruprecht 2012 Pfalz Kallstadter Saumagen Riesling Spätlese Trocken

The Saumagen vineyard is littered with small limestone rocks that reflect heat onto the vines. Though it was expanded in the 1980's, Koehler-Ruprecht's holdings are in the original south-east facing parcel. Glistening notes of lemon, salt, butter, and nuts. A dry Pfalz wine with a lot of finesse, not overly powerful or austere. Great spine of acidity, complex, with depth and length. Will take to the cellar quite well. Jonathan Kemp

Pépière 2014 Muscadet Sèvre et Maine Les Gras Moutons

(Muscadet is one of the world's greatest fish wines - serve Pépière's Gras Mouton with oysters, cod, flounder, fluke or scallops) Another wonderful 2014 Muscadet from Marc Ollivier and Remi Branger! Gras Moutons is a great parcel on gneiss with clay and amphibolite stones, giving a rounder, more aromatic wine than Pepiere's granite terroirs. The 2014 is outstanding - harvested a bit later than usual in this vintage of great weather at the end of the season.  Lovely aromas of lemon oil, pear, white pepper and stone. The palate is a bit rounder than the 2012 and 2013, and deep with white fruits, citrus, hay and anise, with bright, refreshing acidity and a nice mineral kick in the finish. Open enough to enjoy now, this beautifully balanced wine should age nicely for 6 to 10 years. Highly recommended and a great value!

Pepiere 2013 Muscadet Sevre et Maine Monnieres-Saint Fiacre

Domaine de la Pépière has produced this lovely Cru Communal, in the new appellation Muscadet Monnières-Saint Fiacre from old vines on gneiss terroir with topsoils of sand and gravel, formerly part of the Cuvée Eden and Gras Moutons. Slow two month fermentation followed by 24 months of aging on the lees.  This is a scintillating Muscadet from a somewhat difficult year, showing aromas of bitter lemon, apple, pear, white pepper and herbs. The palate is austere and bright with stone, citrus and white fruits that continue on the mineral-infused finish. This is a great success for the vintage and is a perfect, and very elegant accompaniment to oysters, grilled fish and baked cod and flounder or any mild fish you can name, roast chicken too! Even better, cellar this wine for ten or more years to reveal its depth and complexity.

Pepiere 2013 Muscadet Sevre et Maine Clisson

Beginning in 2005, Marc Ollivier has produced this cuvée from a small parcel of 50 to 110 year-old vines within the Pepiere vineyard. Originally called "Granite de Clisson" after the unique bedrock in the vineyard, Marc has changed the name to "Clisson" to agree with the new INAO Cru Communal classification. The granite is covered with gravel and clay with large stones, ensuring good drainage and deep penetration by the roots into the fissures in the bedrock, bringing the mineral elements indispensable to this wine. This is a gorgeous wine that seems perfectly balanced, with very firm acidity, intense aromatics and terrific density on the palate.

Closel (Château des Vaults) 2013 Savennières La Jalousie

Evelyn de Pontebriand took over her parents’ estate in 2001 after a long career teaching French literature all over the world. As a lover of all things botanical, it did not take long for her to convert the estate to strictly organic farming and she continues to experiment with different vineyard management techniques in her quest to highlight Savennières austere terroir. Her work in the cellar is very traditional with fermentations occurring naturally with indigenous yeasts and SO2 is used in miniscule doses only if needed. The Chenin Blanc vines from the La Jalousie parcel are 15-20 years old and are planted in sandstone and decomposed quartz schist soils. On the nose it shows classic Savannières aromas of stone fruits, papaya, mango, and waxy citrus fruits. The palate is quite full-bodied and offers luscious tropical fruit anchored by minerals and more juicy citrus. Delicious now, but would be interesting to taste in 5-10 years! Tim Gagnon

Closel (Château des Vaults) 2014 Savennières La Jalousie

This year we're featuring Chenin Blanc in our Thanksgiving email with two great choices from the Loire Valley. These beautiful  wines are great food pairings due to their unique combination of ripe fruit, firm acidity and saline minerals that complement the full-flavored dishes of the holiday table. The 2014 La Jalousie is a particularly great choice as the vintage gave  the wine luscious ripeness while retaining the bright acidity so important for balance and freshness.

Closel (Château des Vaults) 2014 Savennières Clos du Papillon

"The Clos du papillon is a small valley at mid slope, beautifully exposed southwest to the light of the Loire. There are schist, rhyolite but also quartz. The topsoil layer is very shallow (60 cm) which provides excellent drainage for rainwater. The vine growing conditions are difficult, forcing it to develop its roots deep in the rock cracks to draw nutrients. The climate in that parcel allows for a level of highly advanced maturity, with grapes that concentrate aromas under the action of botrytis.  The body and the very long finish make the Clos du Papillon a gastronomic wine to accompany lobster, scallops, smoked fish, Turbots, Saint Peter. It is also interesting with delicate white meats such as veal or capon, along with truffles or mushrooms. Classic mountain cheeses like old Salers, or 5 to 6 years old Comté are equally delicious with this great Savennières." -  Domaine du Closel.  2014 is a great vintage for Loire whites, combining excellent ripeness with bright acidity and great balance - the Clos du Papillon shows beautiful aromas of ripe pear and quince with honeysuckle, lime-flower and dried herbs with hints of smoke and earth.  The palate is superb, very ripe and dense with white fruits, citrus, almond and stone with very firm lemony acidity and mineral flavors. The finsih is very long with bitter lemon and saline minerals. Drinking beautifully now, this should age well, peak drinking perhaps 2020 to 2025 and beyond. David Lillie

Pinon 2014 Vouvray Les Trois Argiles

The 2014 Trois Argiles is a fabulous young Vouvray in the Pinon's preferred Sec-Tendre style showing beautiful aromatics of pear, lemon confit, stone, almond, lime-flower and honey. The palate is deep and ripe with stone and saline minerals, creamy lemon, apple and pear. The wine is dense and very long with superb balance of ripe fruits with very firm acidity. A great Vouvray that is drinking wonderfully now and will be worth revisiting in ten, twenty or thirty years! 12.2%, 15g RS, and 6.2g total acidity.

Pinon 2014 Vouvray Deronnieres

The grapes for this new cuvee from Francois Pinon used to be included in the Silex Noir, but this wonderful vineyard, on a hill-top directly above the Pinon's cave, much deserves to be bottled on it's own. At 18 grams/liter of residual sugar, 12.4% alcohol and strong acidity, the Deronnieres approaches Demi-Sec in style but with superb minerality and balance. The wine shows subtle aromas of lime-flower, dried pear, lemons and stones. The palate is very saline and mineral with bitter lemon, white fruits, and herbal notes with impressive density and length. A great demi-sec with fantastic minerality that will age beautifully!

Descombes, Georges 2014 Brouilly

Georges Descombes is one of the great producers of natural Beaujolais and we're very happy to have the first of his 2014s in the store. The Descombes Brouilly comes from 3.5 hectares on steep slopes, farmed organically. Carbonic maceration with whole clusters then a slow vertical press to finish the fermentation. No additives, a small addition of SO2 before bottling. The 2014 shows the pretty, ripe fruit of this vintage with lovely aromas of strawberry, blackberry and violet with herbal and citrus notes. The palate is fresh and mineral infused with berry fruits and citrusy acids. This is a lovely food-friendly Brouilly to serve, quite cool, with chicken, pork, charcuterie and mild cheeses...

Another lovely Brouilly Vieilles Vignes from Georges Descombes, certainly one of the best producers in Beaujolais! This needs some time to open up then shows blackberry/strawberry aromas with earth, violets and hints of spice. The palate is quite ripe for a 2012 with red and black fruits tinged with citrus and spice, and a nice finish of red berries and earthy acids. Terres Dorées (Jean-Paul Brun) 2014 Beaujolais l'Ancien V.V. (last of stock)

Jean-Paul Brun makes old-school, soulful Beaujolais, and vinifies his Gamay with indigenous yeasts, minimal chaptalization, and traditional Burgundian techniques (no carbonic maceration). Nearly 80-year old, later-harvested vines result in a Beaujolais with remarkable concentration and depth for an under $20 wine. Wild red and black cherry flavors combine with earth and spice notes, framed by a fresh acidity. An excellent quaffer to accompany roast pork or roasted Brussel sprouts/root vegetables. Jonas Mendoza

Terres Dorées (Jean-Paul Brun) 2014 Beaujolais Chardonnay

Located in the village of Charnay in southern Beaujolais, Jean-Paul Brun quietly makes some of the most classic wines of the region on his family’s 40-acre estate. All of the wines are allowed to ferment with native yeasts and minimal amounts of sulfur are employed ensuring fresh, lively wines. Brun’s Beaujolais Blanc is made from 100% Chardonnay that comes from 80+-year-old vines planted in clay and limestone soils. On the nose luscious green apple fruit mingles with poached pear and citrus zest. The palate does have some weight, but this is a lean, sharp wine with a sturdy mineral backbone. It’s really quite amazing to drink such a precise wine for such a value! Tim Gagnon

Terres Dorées (Jean-Paul Brun) 2014 Côte de Brouilly

Jean-Paul Brun of Domaine des Terres Dorées has 2 parcels of 50 year-old vines on a steep section of Mont Brouilly with a south-east exposition at about 1,000 ft of altitude. The thin soil is almost entirely stones of granite with a high iron content. (A more interesting terroir than the thicker, damper soils of Brouilly.) This is a gorgeous wine! Lovely, ripe blackberry and raspberry/strawberry fruit aromas with a touch of  violets and earth. The palate is ripe  but balanced (at 12.5% alcohol) with black and red fruit liqueur and fresh citrusy acids that linger in the finish. A beautiful Beaujolais for current drinking and over the next few years. Highly recommended! "Contains very little sulfite," says the label "store in a cool place and consume rapidly after uncorking" We haven't noticed any problem keeping this wine, but consuming rapidly after uncorking will be easy... Terres Dorees 2014 Moulin-a-Vent

(From four hectares in "Maison Neuve," the vines are 35 to 50 years old, the soil is "roche pourri" with a high manganese content. There is little vegetation as the sandy topsoil is crammed with stones.) Jean-Paul Brun has made a real Moulin-a-Vent of terroir in this excellent vintage for Beaujolais. The wine shows ripe plum, blackberry, violets and citrus with earth and spice. The palate is very mineral, quite subtle and balanced with blackberry and red currant fruit backed with very earthy, spicy acidity. This is a lovely Moulin-a-Vent that is delicious now and should open up nicely over the next five to ten years. DL

Desvignes 2014 Morgon Côte de Py

From old vines on the north-east section of the Cote du Py, semi-carbonic vinification with a longer maceration and more extraction than normal in the Beaujolais. The forward, fresh character of the 2014 vintage suits the Desvignes style nicely with the wine showing softer tannins and lush fruit ideal for drinking young. Deep red/black color. Pretty aromas of black-raspberry, strawberry and red currant with violet and citrus, quite ripe. The palate is rich and supple with firm tannins and acidity, showing red fruit liqueur, black cherry and hints of cocoa an earth. Good density and length and seems a bit stronger than the 12.5 % alcohol on the label. This is a lovely example of a more concentrated and structured style of Beaujolais - delicious now, best 2020 to 2025+

Koehler-Ruprecht 2010 Pfalz Weisser Burgunder Annaberg Spätlese Trocken

As we've come to expect with everything we taste from Koehler-Ruprecht, the 2010 Weisser Burgunder (Pinot Blanc) is a really fascinating take on a style of wine that isn't often that exciting. While so many Pinot Blancs are bland, nondescript, mildly citrusy white wines, what you get from the old casks at K-R is much more interesting, invigorating and even a little bit quirky. This wine is built on a fairly sturdy, chalky frame and is actually broad and somewhat oxidative, flavors you're not likely to encounter in most Pinot Blancs. This is savory, penetrating stuff and will pair perfectly with any rustic central European cuisine. -jfr

Foradori 2014 IGT Vignetti delle Dolomiti Fontanasanta Manzoni Bianco

Manzoni Bianco is a cross between Pinot Bianco and Riesling developed by Luigi Manzoni in the 1920 and 30s; it combines the florality and lift of the Riesling grape with the brighter citrus fruit of Pinot Bianco. Elisabetta Foradori farms about 3 hectares of this variety in the iron-rich limestone soils of the Alto-Adige at 400 meters above sea level. One week of skin contact plus a year of aging in acacia casks lends a deep, almost honeyed texture and subtle tannic presence underneath notes of cider, honeysuckle, red apple skins, pear, almond and pineapple. Teroldego is a relatively unknown Italian grape variety that hails from the Dolomite mountains in the far North of Italy. In Elisabetta Foradori's talented hands the Teroldego vine truly creates something special through very low yields and passionate agriculture.
