Chenin Blanc: "Loire, and South African speciality, making crisp, sometimes long-lived wines with varying degrees of sweetness that deserve more recognition" say the fine folks who produced the excellent book, Wine Grapes.  We might be more lavish in our praise, saying that Chenin Blanc produces some of the world's most distinctive wines, be they dry, off-dry, sweet or sparkling which are among the most profound accompaniments to fine cuisine. The authors of Wine Grapes go on to say that mentions of Chenin Blanc in the 9th century are probably unreliable, the earliest written mention being by Rabelais in 1534, by which time the grape had been planted at the monastery of Montchenin, near Cormery, then "propagated across the Touraine region, and whence it returned to its birthplace in Anjou under its new name, Chenin." Thriving on the metamorphic shists and slates of the Massif Armoricain in Anjou as well as the quite different sedimentary limestones of Touraine, Chenin Blanc produces the great Loire Valley wines of Savennières, Anjou, Coteaux du Layon, Saumur, Chinon, Azay-le-Rideau, Vouvray and Montlouis (and many others) and has been successfully transported to the US and South Africa. The best examples are capable of aging for fifty years and more, as those few who have tasted 1921 Vouvrays can happily attest. In the past, however, the grape was frequently abused by over-cropping, early picking, chaptalization and excessive use of sulfur, but the last twenty years have seen a revolution in farming and winemaking, resulting in a resurgence in quality throughout the Loire Valley, including many young growers whose organic vineyard work and natural vinifications are showing brilliant results.

We're proud to welcome Pascaline Lepeltier, one of the world's great sommeliers and greatest lovers of Chenin Blanc, to Chambers Street Wines on Tuesday April 19th at 5:00pm as we present "Chenin Gym," a tasting of some of our favorite Chenins that will display the different styles of wine and the  varied terroirs of the vineyards. Pascaline will then run up the street to Racines NY where "A Celebration of Chenin Blanc" will feature 18 wines including sparkling, dry, off-dry and sweet from recent and older vintages (1989 Huet Bourg Moelleux 1er Trie and 1990 Coulée de Serrant), accompanied by the superb cuisine of Chef Frédéric Duca.  (Please call 212-227-1434 or email the store (office@chambersstwines.com) to reserve a spot at the tasting.  Dinner reservations may be purchased below or by calling Racines NY at 646-577-3400 or by email to info@racinesny.com)

Please peruse this list of great Chenin Blancs, which includes many of the estates which led the revolution of quality in the Loire - Baudouin, Joly, Closel, Huet, Pinon, Foreau and Chidaine as well as many of the young vignerons producing exciting "natural" Chenins as the Chenin Blanc revolution continues!

Pinon, François 2014 Vouvray Brut

From a plot of very old Chenin Blanc vines, François' Brut NV is kept on the lees for 18 months before bottling. It has pretty apple, pear, floral and toasty flavors with good acidity balancing the fruit. The current cuvée is from 2014 and it's one of their best ever - a bit riper than usual with round but well defined fruit—a great alternative to Champagne, it's delicious as an apéritif before the meal or afterwards with apple pie. This is a great choice during the holidays - a real crowd-pleaser at a great price, before, after or during the meal!

Huet 2010 Vouvray Petillant Brut

25 years of Biodynamic farming at Domaine Huet contributes to the amazing quality of this beautiful Petillant Brut, which spends a minimum of three years on the lees. Tasted in January of 2016 the wine was showing lovely aromas of white fruits, citrus, lime-flower, honey and mineral, with an elegant mousse and terrific length. 2010 is a great vintage for Loire Valley Chenin Blanc - this is delicious now and will improve for years...

Jousset, Lise et Bertrand 2014 Montlouis-sur-Loire L'Appetillant Brut

L'Appetillant is the Joussets' sparkling Montlouis, 100% Chenin Blanc, Champagne method (or should we say "Methode Traditionelle") made with no sulfur and no dosage. All cellar functions by gravity, no pumping, fermentation in one to seven year-old barrels, approximately 12 months on the lees. From 40 year-old vines on sand and silex soils over limestone. This version is absolutely delicious with lovely aromas of pear, lime-flower, stone and caramel, quite subtle and complex. White fruits, citrus and stone on the palate with nice chalky, lemony length. Drink over the next three years. This is a beautiful wine and is highly recommended!

Jousset, Lise et Bertrand 2014 Montlouis-sur-Loire Bubulles Pet Nat

Simply put, this is top-shelf Pét-Nat for a picnic-friendly price. From organically farmed Chenin vines (45 years of age on average) in Montlouis-sur-Loire in soils of sand and silex over limestone. All cellar operations are by gravity, without pumping, the fermentaion is in 3 to 6 year-old barriques of 225 and 400 liters. The wine is vibrant straw yellow and adorned with a fine mousse. The nose reveals aromas of ripe pear, Granny Smith, lime flower, creamy lemon with heather honey and stone.. A finely chiseled palate is a bit off-dry with hints of dried pear, apple and anise over a core of saline minerals with terrific length. This is a thirst-quenching Pet-Nat, made without sulfur, that happens to be a serious and elegant wine!

Closel (Château des Vaults) 2014 Savennières La Jalousie

This year we're featuring Chenin Blanc in our Thanksgiving email with two great choices from the Loire Valley. These beautiful  wines are great food pairings due to their unique combination of ripe fruit, firm acidity and saline minerals that complement the full-flavored dishes of the holiday table. The 2014 La Jalousie is a particularly great choice as the vintage gave  the wine luscious ripeness while retaining the bright acidity so important for balance and freshness.

Evelyn de Pontebriand took over her parents’ estate in 2001 after a long career teaching French literature all over the world. As a lover of all things botanical, it did not take long for her to convert the estate to strictly organic farming and she continues to experiment with different vineyard management techniques in her quest to highlight Savennière's austere terroir. Her work in the cellar is very traditional with fermentations occurring naturally with indigenous yeasts and SO2 is used in miniscule doses only if needed. The Chenin Blanc vines from the La Jalousie parcel are 15-20 years old and are planted in sandstone and decomposed quartz schist soils. On the nose it shows classic Savennières aromas of stone fruits, papaya, mango, and waxy citrus fruits. The palate is quite full-bodied and offers luscious tropical fruit anchored by minerals and more juicy citrus. The 2014 is the finest La Jalousie in many years - beautifully balanced and delicious now, but would be interesting to taste in 5-10 years! Tim Gagnon

Closel (Château des Vaults) 2014 Savennières Clos du Papillon

"The Clos du papillon is a small valley at mid slope, beautifully exposed southwest to the light of the Loire. There are schist, rhyolite but also quartz. The topsoil layer is very shallow (60 cm) which provides excellent drainage for rainwater. The vine growing conditions are difficult, forcing it to develop its roots deep in the rock cracks to draw nutrients. The climate in that parcel allows for a level of highly advanced maturity, with grapes that concentrate aromas under the action of botrytis.  The body and the very long finish make the Clos du Papillon a gastronomic wine to accompany lobster, scallops, smoked fish, Turbots, Saint Peter. It is also interesting with delicate white meats such as veal or capon, along with truffles or mushrooms. Classic mountain cheeses like old Salers, or 5 to 6 years old Comté are equally delicious with this great Savennières." -  Domaine du Closel.  2014 is a great vintage for Loire whites, combining excellent ripeness with bright acidity and great balance - the Clos du Papillon shows beautiful aromas of ripe pear and quince with honeysuckle, lime-flower and dried herbs with hints of smoke and earth.  The palate is superb, very ripe and dense with white fruits, citrus, almond and stone with very firm lemony acidity and mineral flavors. The finsih is very long with bitter lemon and saline minerals. Drinking beautifully now, this should age well, peak drinking perhaps 2020 to 2025 and beyond. David Lillie

Batardiere 2014 Anjou L'Esprit Libre

From 3 parcels in the village of Rablay from vines aging from 15-90 years old. Plateaus of sandy soil and gravely soils of quartz over schist. The blend is assembled in stainless steel tanks before fermentation. Alcoholic and Malo lactic fermentation occur naturally, without the use of temperature control, and the wine sees no sulfur whatsoever until a tiny addition at the bottling.  This is a fun and truly singular expression of Chenin. At times there are hints of pear and lime flower, then it unfolds into sharp minerals and crispy acidity, and these two elements of fruit and stones continue to intermingle. It’s lean, but dense and round as well.  -Eben Lillie

Batardiere 2014 Anjou Clos des Cocus

From vines planted in 1958, aged in 2-3 year old 500 liter barrels. The parcel is on a south-west facing slope of a windy hill in Fay d’Anjou, with soils comprised of clay over schist. A plethora of volcanic rocks blanket the vineyard, including spilite (a type of basalt that is found in volcanic soils), and rhyolite (a type of granite). All this is to say that the wine is transmitting the flavors of an extremely mineral rich terroir. It’s as if the floral notes and subtle fruit are an after thought to the stones and the crystalline minerals in the wine. Hints of lime on the nose, and intermittent tropical fruit, nice density in mouth, and a long, chalky and saline finish.

Jousset, Lise et Bertrand 2014 Montlouis-sur-Loire Premier Rendez-Vous

Chenin Blanc from two terroirs in Montlouis - 40 year-old vines on sand and silex soils over limestone and 70 year-old vines on clay/limestone soils, yields of 30 hl/ha, aged in 2 to 8 year-old large barrels. The 2014 Premier Rendez-Vous is a beautiful wine showing subtle aromas of citrus, stone, pear and lime flower with hints of honey and herbs. Delicate white fruits on the palate with intense chalky mineral flavors and perfect acidity, with pretty fruit and minerals in the long finish. This is a lovely, pure and simply delicious Chenin to drink over the next 5 to 8 years. Bravo to Lise and Bertrand Jousset!

Jousset, Lise et Bertrand 2014 Montlouis-sur-Loire Clos Renards - Singulier

We are very proud to offer the beautiful wines of Lise and Bertrand Jousset, whose goal is to make "living wines" from living soils and healthy vines in a balanced environment. All of their wines share a vivacity and natural complexity making them a joy to drink - due to great farming and careful vinifications with minimal intervention and minimal or zero added sulfur.  The Montlouis "Singulier - Clos aux Renards" is a dry Montlouis made from 60 to 80 year-old Chenin vines on clay soils called "Aubuis" over Turonian limestone. All cellar functions are by gravity without pumping, fermentation is in two and three year-old 400 and 600 liter barrels.

Carême 2010 Vouvray Le Clos

The 2010 Le Clos from Vincent Careme is a superb off-dry Vouvray (20 grams/liter of RS) that is a bit softer than the wonderful 2008, showing brilliant aromas of lime-flower, white and yellow fruits, spice, lemon and stone with a hint of marzipan, really lovely! The palate is very mineral with stone, lemon, honeysuckle and herbal flavors with firm acidity and a long creamy finish. This is a great young Vouvray to serve with fish or chicken in sauce, foie gras and mild cheeses, or cellar for twenty years for a mature experience...

Chidaine 2014 Montlouis Sur Loire Les Bournais

This is usually our favorite wine from François and Manuela Chidaine, long-time champions of organic and biodynamic farming in the Loire Valley. Named after the soil type "Les Bournais," a unique clay topsoil over limestone (tuffeau blanche) also found across the river in Vouvray. The 2014 is a beautiful example of this wine with lovely aromas of lemon confit, kiwi, pear, lime-flower, honey and earth, with even a bit of red fruit as well. Chalky ripe pear and citrus on the palate with terrific length of stone, white fruits and lemon peel. This is a great Montlouis that will perfectly accompany fish or chicken in sauce, Asian foods and mild cheeses. It's delicious now, and should be very interesting after ten to fifteen years in the cellar...

Pinon 2014 Vouvray Silex Noir

After a disastrous hail-storm in 2012 and tiny yields in 2013, Francois Pinon finally has wine to sell and from an outstanding vintage. Tasting through samples of his 2014s in February we were thrilled by these beautiful wines, clearly among the very best of the appellation. The Silex Noir is from parcels of clay over limestone with black flint, giving wines with a unique mineral character and complex, open aromas. The 2014 is superbly balanced at 12.1% alcohol and 15 grams of RS with very firm acidity. Lovely citrus, dried pear, licorice and floral aromas with full-bodied palate of minerals, white fruits and citrus, finishing with good acidity. Though quite delicious now, this is a very young wine that will benefit from decanting or aging, perhaps best 2025 to 2035.

Pinon 2014 Vouvray Deronnieres

The grapes for this new cuvee from Francois Pinon used to be included in the Silex Noir, but this wonderful vineyard, on a hill-top directly above the Pinon's cave, much deserves to be bottled on it's own. At 18 grams/liter of residual sugar, 12.4% alcohol and strong acidity, the Deronnieres approaches Demi-Sec in style but with superb minerality and balance. The wine shows subtle aromas of lime-flower, dried pear, lemons and stones. The palate is very saline and mineral with bitter lemon, white fruits, and herbal notes with impressive density and length. A great demi-sec with fantastic minerality that will age beautifully!

Grandes Vignes 2013 Anjou Varenne du Poirier

2013 was not a great year for many in the Loire, but this Chenin Blanc from Grandes Vignes is something special! From vines on schist, averaging around 20 years old, the wine undergoes a long press of about 12 hours, goes through fermentation and malolactic in 400 liter barrels, and is then aged for about 10 months in barrel. It’s bottled without filtration. This is a richer style of Chenin Blanc, with notes of stewed apples, floating above stone fruit and minerals. In the mouth, there’s a buttery texture balanced by crunchy acidity and persistent minerality. It’s truly fine to drink now, but should improve and develop over the next 5 years.   -Eben Lillie

Huet 2008 Vouvray Le Haut Lieu Moelleux

*This wine is in the warehouse and will not be available for pick-up or delivery until after Labor Day.

2008 is a great vintage for moelleux and demi-sec Vouvray as the high acidity of the vintage gives fabulous brightness and balance to the extra sweetness. The Huet 2008 Haut-Lieu is superb now with terrines, foie gras, vegetable soups, mild cheeses and much more - and don't hesitate to age ten more years.
