New Arrivals From the Jura and a Special By-The-Glass Evening at Racines NY Tuesday May 17th!

Share

It seems as if spring is finally here in New York City, and along with it a handful of new arrivals from the Jura! Below is a list of some exciting wines from producers we all know and love, to those that are just beginning to explode onto the scene. Of special note are tiny quantities of some 2014s from Jaques Puffeney, i.e. his last vintage before the Marquis d'Angerville takes over the estate. Given that virtually every vintage this decade has been tough on these vignerons, and with seemingly less wine arriving in the US with each shipment, it's a real treat when they finally make their way to this side of the Atlantic.

In addition to the wines below being available, we are happy to announce another special by-the-glass evening at Racines NY focusing on the Jura! Twelve selections will be available with dinner or at the bar for this one-night-only event. We hope to see you there! Starting at 6pm and lasting until the wine is gone Tuesday May 17th at Racines NY, 94 Chambers St. NY, NY 10007. Tim Gagnon

Montbourgeau NV Crémant du Jura Brut

From the Jura, this is mostly Chardonnay with Savagnin, and it's one of the best sparkling wines we have in the store. It has pleasant rustic apple fruit balanced by fierce cold-climate acidity, with hints of cashew and herbs — it would be hard to distinguish this from Champagne in a blind tasting (it's even a bit chalky!) A seriously distinguished bubbly — at a house price.

Tissot NV Cremant du Jura Rose

This is a fabulous wine from Stéphane Tissot’s biodynamic estate in Arbois. His crémant is a blend of Chardonnay, Poulsard, and Pinot Noir and it is a stunning, vibrant pink hue with orange flecks. On the nose it shows bright red raspberries, quince, orange blossom, and tart red cherries. On the palate it is lush and fruit-forward, yet dry with a fine mousse, minerals, and a delicate spice. Since this wine is so well-structured, it would be perfect paired alongside summer salads, grilled salmon, or just about anything! Tim Gagnon

Tissot 2014 Arbois Chardonnay "Les Graviers"

Sourced from Chardonnay vine planted in limestone-rich soils, this is one of Stephane’s wines that really stand out. Fermentations occur with native yeasts and aging is in large, neutral oak barrels. On the nose it is rife with citrus, smoke, jasmine tea, wet river stones, and musky tropical melon - truly exciting. With time, it softens a bit allowing subtle floral aromatics to come forward. The palate is powerful and full-bodied with mouth-watering salinity, lemon curd, more smoke, and overripe pineapple. This is a serious, stunning, and contemplative wine. Tim Gagnon

Les Pieds Sur Terre (Valentin Morel) 2014 Cotes du Jura Chardonnay Saint-Savin

After a short-lived career as a civil servant and a stage with Christian Binner in Alsace, Valentin Morel took over 5 hectares of his father’s original 10 hectare estate. Now, at the age of 25, he is working incredibly hard at converting his vines to a Fukuoka-inspired style of farming including large-scale cover cropping with legumes and radishes to avoid plowing, but allowing for the ecosystem to flourish. His Chardonnay Saint-Savin, a single parcel of 35-year-old vines on limestone really shows what Valentin is capable of. The wine is allowed to ferment naturally in large, neutral oak barrels and opens with delicate tropical fruit, nut, and honey aromas rising from the glass with a hint of tangerine skin. The palate is more powerful combining rich fruit and wonderful texture with citrus and racy minerals. This is his first vintage and it is an exceptional debut! Tim Gagnon

Cavarodes 2014 Lumachelles Blanc

A serious and rare wine from none other than Etienne Thiebaud!  Known for his massive dreadlocks and his incredibly skillful, thoughtful winemaking, he never fails to make some of the most compelling wines in the Jura. His Lumachelles cuvée comes from a new parcel of vines acquired in the village of Mouchard, just north of Poligny. It is made from Chardonnay in the ouillé style, fermented and aged in large foudre, with a long elévage on the lees before being bottled without any SO2 whatsoever. Compared to some other Chardonnays made similarly in the region, this wine suggests a more lifted quality with exquisitely bright floral and lemon balm aromatics with a hint of fresh herbs. The palate is a decidedly more lean and mineral and maintains its citrus zing along with sea salt-crusted mango. Due to limited supply, there is a maximum of 3 bottles per customer. Tim Gagnon

Marnes Blanches (Geraud Fromont) 2014 Cotes du Jura Savagnin En Quartre Vis

Although the 2015 vintage of this wine just became available, we wanted to highlight the 2014 as it is drinking beautifully right now. The Savagnin for this cuvée is sourced from a few different parcels, all of them vinified separately in neutral barrique before being blended together in stainless steel tank before bottling. It has all of the classic lusciousness that Savagnin can offer while also displaying wonderful purity and tension. This wine definitely has the structure to age well, as long as you have the will power! Tim Gagnon

Marnes Blanches (Geraud Fromont) 2011 Cotes du Jura Savagnin Tradition

Pauline and Géraud Fromont work 10 hectares of vines (some of them being around 100 years old!) spread across three towns in the southern part of the Côtes du Jura AOC - Cesancey, Vincelles, and Ste-Agnès – and the vines are planted in a variety of soil types with the majority being white marl over a limestone base. They have been working organically since acquiring their vineyards in 2006 and are now certified by Ecocert. They share all aspects of the winemaking and administrative duties and are truly making themselves known as producing some of the most delicious and terroir-driven wines in the region. For their sous voile wines they have a separate, three-story cellar that creates an environment conducive to healthy layers of flor. It is dark and humid, with no temperature control, and different levels of humidity on each level influencing the wines in barrel differently. They put the wines in barrel on hot days to assure that the flor develops quickly and they will not be moved again until after a minimum of 3 years. Much like the 2010, the 2011 Savagnin is classic and precise with an emphasis on balance and freshness. Tropical fruits abound with fenugreek, curry powder, honey-baked walnuts, and saline pears. The palate is sharp and focused with a tangy saltiness and fresh fruit with nuts followed by dried flowers rushing forward on the finish. It is an impressively crafted wine that opens up beautifully at the table and would be perfect with a main course of veal or roasted chicken and also the 12-month-old Comté that will follow! Puffeney NV Arbois Cuvee Sacha

Puffeney continues the tradition of the non-vintage Sacha with delicous results! The nose is all nuts and flor aromas showing the unmistakable tang of white wines raised this way, while the palate unleashes a burst of crunchy, bright, lemon-y fruit. We love Sacha, and this does not disappoint. Tim Gagnon

Tissot 2014 Arbois D.D.

This is a delicious wine from Stéphane Tissot’s Biodynamic estate in Arbois! It is a blend of Poulsard, Trousseau, and Pinot Noir that ferments and ages in 100-year-old, 2,000L foudre. It doesn’t see any SO2 at any time during the fermentation, and at 11% alcohol it is incredibly pure and fresh! Lots of red berry fruits mingle on the nose, and there is ample minerality on the palate accompanied by more berry fruits and a surprising amount of structure. Serve slightly chilled, and pair with summery foods of all kinds! Tim Gagnon

Saint Pierre 2014 Arbois Pinot Noir Les Gaudrettes

The 2014 Les Gaudrettes from Fabrice Dodane is downright delicious. Pinot Noir from a single parcel of vines undergoes carbonic maceration and it is vinified and bottled  entirely sans soufre! Bright, vivid, and pretty  on the nose with gobs of tart red raspberries, rose petals, clementine, and a touch of spice. The palate offers more bright fruit with that classic Jura crunchiness. Serve cool, and pair with charcuterie, grilled meats, or roast chicken. Tim Gagnon

Marnes Blanches (Geraud Fromont) 2011 Cotes du Jura Vin de Paille 375ml

Vin de Paille literally means straw wine referring to the traditional practice of drying the grapes in boxes lined with straw mats prior to pressing. This is a style of wine commonly confused with or mistaken for Vin Jaune, yet is wildly different in every way. There are strict rules as to what Vin de Paille is, and within those confines, many unique styles arise (For those of you interested in the ins and outs of this style of wine, our friend and Jura expert Wink Lorch has a fascinating write up on her website: http://jurawine.co.uk/the-wines/vin-de-paille/). The Fromont’s make theirs with a blend of Savagnin, Chardonnay, and Poulsard and allow them to raisin over the course of five months before a long pressing. The nose is exquisite with notes of brown sugar, dried figs, stewed black cherries, black tea, and a piquant, briny quality. There are also deeper aromas redolent of anise and caraway. Though it has quite a bit of residual sugar, it isn’t cloying on the palate due to ample acidity. Whether you are a lover of Vin de Paille or just trying one for the first time, put this on your short list for after-dinner cheese courses: you won’t regret it. Tim Gagnon

Saint Pierre 2008 Arbois Vin Jaune 375 ml

With ample finesse and more fresh fruit showing than one might expect from Vin Jaune, this wine really gives insight to how Fabrice Dodane of Domaine Saint Pierre makes sous voile wines. 2008 was a cool vintage in the Jura, and this definitely shows here. Bright, crunchy lemon peel and herb aromas rise from the glass with a touch of white pepper. The palate is incredibly lifted, briny, and mineral with luscious fruit and a wisp of smoke that lasts virtually forever. This is the first vintage of Fabrice's Vin Jaune, and it is truly special.
