Rosé Round II; New Arrivals for Memorial Day Weekend! Summer is Coming!?

Share

As temperatures in New York finally creep upwards towards Summer another batch of beautiful naturally-made rosés has arrived to accompany your Memorial Day weekend and beyond. Fermented with wild yeasts and without the additives present in most rosés, these delicious wines have subtle, complex aromas and lovely fruit accompanied by firm acidity and mineral flavors on the palate, making them great food pairings for all your warm-weather dining and perfect for picnics on the beach....

Navarre NV Vin de France Grenache Rosé Demi-Sec

This is a delicious vin doux naturel from Thierry Navarre made from very late-harvested Grenache. We imagine that it's a wine made the way wine used to be made all over the Languedoc before temperature control was an option. A bit sweet and somewhat sherry-like, the aromas are of prune and ripe cherry, with licorice and brown spice. Very long and nutty on the palate, perhaps the best way to imagine this wine is to think of an Oloroso sherry... then extrapolate! Absolutely delicious and a great accompaniment to chocolate, fruit tarts, dried fruits or simply by itself as an apéritif. Thanks to Thierry for finally making a label and shipping us some of this unique local specialty.

Baudry 2015 Chinon Rosé

(Tasted before bottling in February.) The 2015 Baudry Chinon Rosé is abolutely delicious and is perhaps the best they have made in many years.  With subtle wild-stawberry and raspberry aromas and a complex, light, bright, scintillating palate, this is a refreshing and stimulating complement to any light summer cuisine. 100% Cabernet Franc, organic farming, wild yeast fermentation and minimal added sulfur - this is a beautiful "natural" rosé from one of the finest estates in the Loire Valley.

Dauny 2015 Sancerre Rosé Pynoz

Showing deep salmon red in the glass and dense fruit on the palate, the 2015 Dauny Sancerre rose is an assertive wine.  The nose jumps out of the glass with fresh summer peaches and red cherries backed by lime zest and a slight but distinct note of smoke.  Soft red fruits shine through on the palate with strawberries and cherries over tart citrus and bracing minerality.  The wine is full and even a touch velvety with a crisp acidity that keeps the finish elegant, rather than being too weighty.  Best drunk with a juicy grilled chicken, fresh chevre, or any finger food at hand all summer long. Domaine de Reuilly 2015 Reuilly Pinot Gris Rose

The wines of Denis Jamain at the Domaine de Reuilly are getting better and better - his 2016 Rosé of Pinot Gris is from vines in conversion to organic and biodynamic certification, fermented with wild yeats. The color is a lovely pale onion-skin, the aromas are floral and pretty with gooseberry, peach and citrus. Light berry, peach and stone flavors on the palate are framed in firm acidity. With good ripeness, but subtle and balanced, this unique rosé will accompany a wide variety of foods, from fish to grilled meats and Asian foods, and it's lovely to sip by itself!

Terres Dorées (Jean-Paul Brun) 2015 Beaujolais Rosé d'Folie

Jean-Paul Brun chose to buck the trend and go Burgundian in style for his winemaking (read: no carbonic maceration) in the south of Beaujolais, and we’ve been reaping the benefits ever since. This rosé is 100% Gamay, and sees only stainless steel, so you know it’s so fresh and so clean. Vibrant, jewel-pink in the glass, this is a solid choice for a work-horse summer rosé. The wine boasts a great balance of juicy strawberries, tart raspberries and canteloupe with candied rose petal and a mélange of citrus zests. Drink now!  Cari Bernard

Vissoux 2015 Beaujolais les Griottes Rose

One of the most refreshing Rosés, the Vissoux les Griottes is always quite light in body with subtle strawberry/raspberry fruit and brisk acidity, though showing a bit more ripeness in this excellent vintage. It's a direct-press rosé, from hand-harvested fruit, fermented with wild yeasts with minimal SO2 added. Delicious and thirst-quenching, perfect for the hottest summer days....

Bartucci NV (2015) Bugey Cerdon Methode Ancestrale

The Bartucci Bugey Cerdon is superb in 2015! Beautiful color, lovely aromas of small berries and flowers, gorgeous fruit on the palate. A bit more ripeness and residual sugar in this warm vintage, but it's perfectly balaced and fresh. Insanely delicious! Enjoy as an aperitif on a picnic, at the beach, on your fire escape....

Clos du Joncuas 2014 Gigondas Rosé

This is a beautiful Gigondas Rosé from our organic friends at Clos du Joncuas. Pretty bright pink color, aromas of raspberry, tart cherry, blood orange, peach skin and rose. Full palate with creamy red fruits and firm acidity. Long finish with tart cherry, peach, earth and citrusy acids. A bit lighter and better balanced than the 2013, and still young – it should open up nicely over the next two years. It's delicious now and very food-friendly – serve with grilled fish and white meats, salade nicoise, vegetarian dishes and Provençal foods. A great rose to enjoy all year-round!

Ferme Saint-Martin 2015 Côtes du Ventoux Rosé d'Entrevon

A lovely rosé of Syrah, Grenache and Cinsault grown in the Ventoux by Guy and Thomas Jullien at their beautiful organic estate in Suzette, above Beaume-de-Venise.  The grapes are hand-harvested, fermented with only wild yeasts and the wine is bottled with minimal SO2. Very subtle, pretty peach/raspberry aromas with citrus and spice. Beautiful palate with firm acidity and mineral flavors with hints of red currant, raspberry, peach and brown spice, with good density and length. This is a real wine of terroir, showing more mineral than fruit, which should open up nicely with aeration or a few months in bottle. A fabulous value!

Terres Promises 2015 Bandol Rosé "La Chance"

A delightful rosé from Jean-Christophe Comor! Situated at 400m in elevation in the village of La Roquebrussanne, Jean-Christophe works his land organically and makes classic Provençal rosés and an array of other delicious wines.  Made from a blend of Mourvèdre, Grenache, and Cinsault, it is very pretty on the nose and exudes classic Bandol aromas of peach skin, blood orange, white pepper, and a hint of garrigue. On the palate it is serious and structured with a fair amount of grip and doesn't lose any of the beautiful fruit found on the nose. Dried flowers, strawberries, and spice linger on a delicate finish. Tim Gagnon

Laguerre 2015 Côtes du Roussillon Eos Rosé

Another delicious wine from the affable and talented Eric Laguerre, from organic Syrah, Carignan and Grenache vines grown on granite soils high in the mountains of the Roussillon. Lovely  pink/garnet color, aromas of raspberry, red currant, blood orange and spice. Beautiful bright red fruits on the palate with citrusy acids in a very firm, mineral frame and good length, really delicious! This is a real rosé of terroir that will gain complexity over the next few months and drink well through 2017. Perfect with a salade niçoise, grilled fish, chicken and pork and great to sip by itself. Highly recommended!

Faillenc Sainte Marie 2015 Vins de Pays d'Oc Rosé des Glaciers Sec

Anyone familiar with the reds from Domaine Faillenc Sainte Marie can attest to the generous dark earthy fruit and garrigue that defines their Corbieres rouge, and you can expect the same from this dark rosé offering from the Gibert family. This truly tastes more like a light red than a rosé. Vibrant fruit, herbs, notes of dried cranberry, and a even a bit of tannin. I would suggest this hearty rosé for summer barbeques, grilled meat, and the like. If you're ever in the mood for a steak but find it too stuffy or hot to drink a full bodied red, then this would be a perfect candidate!  Eben Lillie

Calabretta, Cataldo 2014 Calabria Rosato Alicante

The 2014 Cataldo Calabretta Rosato is an unusual rosato that definitely side steps the mold of simple aperitif wine.  This wine, rather than being dominated by fruit, shows elusive umami notes on the nose; spiced brine, anise, and miso with blood orange and tart cranberry following.  The palate, while still savory, shows more citrus and stone fruit like pithy orange and white peaches.  With more tannin than most roses and bright acidity this wine demands food; grilled mackerel or sardines, briny olives, hard cheese, or a caesar salad (with anchovies!). Bonavita 2015 Terre Siciliane Rosato

Fans of deeply-fruited yet dry roses need look no further than this rich, refreshing Sicilian Rosato from Giovanni Scarfone. Bonavita is a small, family-run winery that clocks in at a mere 2 hectares and just shy of 7,000 bottles produced annually all with manual harvest, native yeasts, and solely from indigenous grapes Nerello Mascalese, Nerello Cappuccio, and Nocera. The Rosato is mainly Mascalese, a large, dark grape that gives aromas and flavors of plum, cherry, orange peel, soft hints of lavender and rose, and a wonderfully plush mouthfeel. All this lush fruit is balanced by the freshness of a fermentation done completely in stainless steel and the addictively clean, almost bitter snap of Nocera's natural acidity on the finish. I loved this unique and lively rose on it's own but it really shined when standing up to boldly prepared foods with plenty of salt. A delicious and palate-cleansing complement to roasted or grilled meats, strong marinades, and anything fried. Karina Mackow

Terre Nere 2015 Etna Rosato

Tenuta Terre Nere is located on the northern slopes of Mt. Etna between 600 and 1,000 meters. 500,000 years of volcanic eruptions has left the area with ash speckled by black pumice and peppered with abundant volcanic rocks. Marco de Grazia never planned to make a rosé, but his daughter loves pink and painting the cellar pink just wasn’t enough. He says this late-ripening indigenous Nerello Mascalese rosé has “the body of a white and the soul of a red.” With good acidity and smooth tannins, red berries, plums and hints of tarragon, it would be well-matched with fish, poultry, light pastas, prosciutto and cantaloupe, figs, olives and cheese. Monte Bernardi 2014 Colli della Toscana Centrale Rosato

One of our favorite Italian winemakers is actually American. Michael Schmelzer moved to Italy in 2003 with his family and purchased 10 hectares of organic vineyards in the "belly button of Chianti Classico" at Monte Bernardi. His 2014 Rosato is from a blend of ‘traditional’ Chianti Classico grapes (90% Sangiovese and Canaiolo Nero, plus 10% Malvasia and Trebbiano) that are hand selected from the cooler areas of their vineyards. The wine spends 8-10 months in oak and then another 6 months aging in bottle. This is a rosato for red wine lovers, full of ripe cherries and strawberries, with easy tannins and good acidity. I know summer isn't here yet, but this might be my favorite rosato of the year! Christine Manula

Finca Parera 2014 Penedes Sumoll Ull de Llebre Roig Rosat

The Catalonian appellation of Penedes is famous for sparkling Cava, but is home to some truly exciting still wines as well, both white, red, and rose. The best examples display power without weight, a sort of charge that runs through the relatively light-bodied wines and creates substance. The family of winemaker Ruben Parera owns Penedes' first certified organic cherry orchard, with certified organic, biodynamically farmed vineyards planted alongside. Parera's rosat is fermented with native yeasts and made naturally with minimal SO2 additions. Aromas are exotic, spicy, herbal and flush with floral cherry-raspberry, rosehips, and hibiscus, with flavors of creamy wild cherry and tart red currant, spiked with fresh acidity and anchored by chalky tannins and length. Highly recommended for fans of Castellroig's excellent rosat and as a pairing for paella, grilled fish, carpaccio, and summery beet salads. Ariana Rolich

Viña Zorzal 2014 Navarra Garnacha Rosado

Viña Zorzal offers some seriously delicious wines from old vines for very little money (as fans of their delightful red Graciano can attest). This one honors the traditional wine of the Navarra region - rosado of Garnacha - and is made from the Sanz family's low-yielding, head trained, organically farmed, old vine Garnacha. Fragrant red current, raspberry, and pink peppercorn aromas lead to distinctive crushed cranberry and strawberry fruit, with zesty pink grapefruit, tropical and herbal undertones on the finish. Zorzal offers impressive concentration, freshness, and complexity at an unbelievable price. Bold, clear, and comforting, we love this wine after a particularly long day and alongside anything from the grill. Its new label features an image of popcorn kernels because Xabi Sanz of Zorzal recommends it as an accompaniment to popcorn and a movie. We look forward to giving that pairing a try! Ariana Rolich

Frontón de Oro 2014 Gran Canaria Rosado

Soft-spoken brothers Pedro and Antonio Ramírez of Frontón de Oro are the team behind some of the most distinctive and elegant red wines coming out of the Canary Islands. With vines at over 1200 meters altitude (although inland, the breathtakingly bucolic vineyards are so high there's a clear view of the sea!), it is unsurprising that their rosado of Listan Negro, Listan Prieto, and Vijariego Negro (co-planted), is aromatic, herbal, complex, and totally fabulous. The grapes are destemmed before undergoing a 30 hour maceration and long, cool native yeast fermentation in stainless steel. Fragrant hibiscus and deep minerality combine with savory watermelon pith, fresh alpine strawberry, spicy cayenne, and volcanic ashy earth. The young but elegant, tissue paper-like tannins that we admire in the Ramirez brothers' reds are present in the rosado as well. These are "food wines" so please experiment! Grilled or sauteed squid from Captain Alex  with garlic, olives, and herbs, stuffed red peppers, grilled sausage, and fresh grilled vegetables  with  sea salt and olive oil will sing alongside of this quintessential volcanic island wine. Porter Creek 2015 Sonoma Rose (Zinfandel/Carignane)

Porter Creek is a father-son project between George and Alex Davis. George originally bought 40 acres of land in Sonoma in 1977, and started the winery in 1982.  Davis père was the winemaker until 1997, when he passed the winemaking responsibilities to his son, Alex. The 2015 rosé is a scintillating blend of mostly Zinfandel (85%) and a bit of Carignan (15%). A rich, fruit forward rosé, this entices with ginger and baking spice aromas, and voluptuous ripe red cherry and cranberry flavors on the palate. An absolute go-to rosé for this summer's BBQs! Stolpman Vineyards 2015 Ballard Canyon Santa Barbara Rose

A mouth-watering rose of 100% Grenache from Stolpman's organically farmed vineyards in Ballard Canyon (Santa Barbara County), weighing in at a refreshing and lunch-friendly 11% alcohol. 30% of the Grenache grapes were fermented whole cluster and carbonically then aged in 500L barrels, blended with the remaining 70% that was raised in stainless steel, and bottled unfiltered; the carbonic component provides this lean rose with with a deep, glowing, coppery orange-pink hue and some plush strawberry  fruit with a tickle of tannin to balance the racy, acid-driven palate  of pink grapefruit, red currant, tangy blood orange, and dried mango, with a taut, acidic frame and a mouth-watering coppery orange-pink hue. Ampelos 2015 Sta. Rita Hills Syrah Rose Upsilon

Certified organic and Demeter certified biodynamic, Ampelos Estate occupies an idyllic hilltop in the Sta. Rita Hills, planted to Pinot Noir, Syrah, Grenache, Viognier, and even some Riesling. Upon arriving at Ampelos a few months ago, I was welcomed by delightful owners/winemakers Peter and Rebecca Work with a glass of this rose of Syrah (with a bit of Riesling), and promptly requested a couple of cases for the store! Fermented in stainless steel with native yeasts, it is a rosy raspberry color in the glass, full of bright and buoyant tart red berries, with spicy black cherry, savory black currant, orange rind, and nice whiff of sea salt and thyme. An enlivening aperitif that can flow seamlessly into dinner of seared or grilled tuna, squid with olives and garlic, and pasta with pesto and vegetables (if the bottle lasts that long!).  Ariana Rolich

Arndorfer 2015 Niederosterreich Vorgeschmack Rose

If you are looking for a wine that stands out in the sea of light and easygoing summer sippers, this mercurial, savory rosé from the loess and gravel soils of Austria's Kamtal region is exactly what you need. Made predominately from the juicy and spicy Zweigelt grape, which lends refreshing notes of plush cherry and blackberry, the inclusion of Gruner Veltiner skins and partial aging in neutral oak results in a pronounced and alluring texture which is reinforced by a firm spine of minerality.
