The Clos des Vignes du Maynes, consisting of 7.5 hectares in Cruzille (Macon) is one of the most unique and fascinating estates in France, originally planted in the tenth century by the Abbey of Cluny. Puchased by Julien's grandparents, Pierre et Jeanne Guillot in 1952, the Clos had never used chemical treatments of any kind and from the beginning they decided to work in organic agriculture without herbicides or pesticides and to make wine witout added sulfur. Julien's father, Alain, took over the domaine with the same philosophy, and became the president of the National Federation of Organic Agriculture. Julien took the reins in 1998 and introduced the first biodynamic treatments, then converted the entire Clos to Biodynamic farming in 2001. The estate's high altitude vineyards in Cruzille on the third slope west of the Saone River are situated on slabs of limestone with thin clay soils containing crystals of aragonite and manganese. The Chadonnay, Gamay and Pinot Noir vines include a high percentage of old varieties including Pinot Fin and Gamay à Petits Grains. The estate's reds are produced without added sulfites, Julien Guillot explains, as the living soils and biodynamic farming produce wine that rarely needs "protection" and the family has 60 years of experience with no-sulfur vinifications. Julien has recently introduced the Cuvée 910, a field blend of Chardonnay, Gamay and Pinot Noir made exactly as wine was made on the site by the Abbaye de Cluny in 910 AD, without filtration or additives. This delicate and delicious field-blend is one of the most beautiful natural wines of France and in 2015 it is particularly successful with remarkably pure lush fruit, perfectly balanced and light at 12% alcohol. Although we expect this wine will age well, it will be the perfect accompaniment to any picnic or party this summer served quite cool - available in magnums as well. Don't delay as quantites in this superb vintage are quite limited. (Please join us at Racines NY on Wednesday the 15th, from 6pm, as we offer the 910, the 2015 Exspectatia from Christian Ducroux and some very old Beaujolais!)

Also just arrived from the Clos are the wonderful 2014 Macon-Cruzille Blanc, a beautiful Chardonnay of terroir, and the 2012 Sainte-Geneviève Extra Brut made from Chardnonnay, Pinot Noir and Gamay. This is certainly one of the finest Champagne alternatives to be found anywhere and is highly recommended. Julien Guillot is also making small quantities of exceptional natural wines from parcels outside the Clos in the Macon and Beaujolais. We're very happy to have received  a bit more of the extraordinary 2014 Beaujolais-Leynes, made from 90 year-old vines on a craggy hilltop just south of Fuissé. And yes, Julien makes Pouilly-Fuissé and Macon-Village as well, sourced from organic parcels and vinified at the Clos. These are outstanding natural Chardonnays that transcend their appellations and we urge you to try them!

Guillot, Julien (Vignes du Maynes) 2014 Beaujolais Leynes Haut de Balmont (Arrives 12/12)

Julien Guillot of the Clos des vignes du Maynes makes this beautiful Beaujolais from a small parcel of 90 year-old Gamay vines of various old varieties in Leynes, just south of Pouilly-Fuissé. The parcel is at 1200 ft in altitude, with granite soils, giving a light but remarkably intense wine at 11.5% alcohol. The wine shows aromas of ripe blackberry, violets and earth, with hints of citrus and spice. Blackberry, plum and strawberry on the palate with firm citrusy acids, earth and mineral flavors. This is an outstanding natural Beaujolais - serve cool with charcuterie, chicken and pork dishes and full-flavored cheeses. David Lillie

Vignes du Maynes 2014 Macon Cruzille Blanc

From a vineyard first planted by the Abbey of Cluny in 900 AD, acquired by the Guillot family in 1952 and always tended with organic methods.  On thin clay soils over limestone,  organic since 1954, biodynamic since 1998. This is a complex bottle of Chardonnay combining ripeness with firm acidity and great mineral expression, definitely not "typical" of the Mâcon. Aromas of lemon confit, pear, dried herbs, stone, lime-flower and honey. Ripe pear, apple, almond and saline acidity on the palate with pear, citrus and chalky minerals lingering on the finish. A beautiful wine from the living soils at the Clos des Vignes du Maynes, Biodynamic farming, minimal SO2. Serve with full-flavored fish dishes, farm chicken, goat and comté cheeses.

The 2014 shows ripe pear, honeysuckle, lemon confit and botrytis aromas, quite complex and lovely. The palate is silky with citrus, almond, pear and mineral flavors that continue on the long finish wrapped in saline acidity.  This is a Pouilly-Fuissé that is full of character and complexity - serve with full-flavored fish dishes, chicken in sauce, white meats and strong cheeses and it should age nicely as well.

Guillot, Julien (Vignes du Maynes) 2014 Macon-Villages

Julien Guillot of the Clos des Vignes du Maynes, makes this lovely Macon-Villages from certified organic parcels in Chardonnay,  Montbellet and Viré-Clessé on Bathonian limestone with clay, rich in silica.  Incredibly aromatic, with wildflower, lime blossom, green apple peel, honey roasted walnut, beeswax, poached pear, and a hint of lanolin on the nose. It does have an unctuous mouth feel, but it’s balanced by excellent acidity and minerality with more orchard fruit, apricot, and salted peach. Remarkably textured and long with succulent fruit, toasted nuts, and honey on the finish. This is truly a pretty wine, and would be at home next to many types of food, especially summery fare and tangy cheeses! Tim Gagnon
