Recent arrivals in the Burgundy department include 2013s and 2014s from these two over-achieving estates, long-time favorites among CSW customers, offering outstanding quality Burgundies both for current  drinking and medium-term cellaring.

Gilles Lafouge is the sixth generation at this 10 hectare estate in Auxey-Duresses. The domain includes excellent premier cru vineyards with old vines in Auxey-Duresses as well as small parcels in neighboring Meursault and an old-vine plot in Pommard 1er Cru Les Chanlins. There is good vineyard work here with plowing and organic composts, vinifications are with wild yeasts and the wines age mostly in old barriques with a small percentage new. Never over-extracted or over-oaked, these are true wines of terroir that offer terrific value. Says John Gilman in The View From the Cellar "The white wines are very racy and transparent, and offer up outstanding minerality and cut. Stylistically they are very similar to Jean-Marc Roulot's wines and are well worth discovering. The reds here are equally lovely, soil-driven and beautifully balanced wines with the ability to drink well early on and yet age gracefully for at least fifteen to twenty years."  We've just received the wonderful 2013 whites, including the rare and beautiful "Les Casse-Têtes" along with the superb 2013 Auxey Duresses 1er Cru "La Chapelle" and the 2014 village Auxey-Duresses. These are absolutely delicious traditional wines that will bring a smile to any lover of good Burgundy...

Martin and Pierre Bart

Domaine Bart, Marsannay: The affable Martin Bart, now joined by his nephew Pierre, inherited part of the Clair-Dau estate including vines in Bonnes Mares and Clos de Bèze but the principal holdings are in Marsannay, including the fine lieu-dit (soon to be Premier Cru) of "Champs Salomon."  The 2014s here are particulary delicious, with the late season sunshine saving this difficult year for the growers, producing wines with round, supple fruit, and lovely freshness as well. The "Champs Salomon" is a beautiful expression of this well positioned mid-slope parcel, offering outstanding ripeness and compexity with good structure for aging while the "Saint Jacques," higher on the slope on thin rocky soils, is especially pretty, a bit lighter, and will drink beautifully young. And of course the ripe and juicy Bourgogne Rouge will be a great addition to summer barbecues and picnics. The Bart wines are now in great demand given their superb quality/price ratio, and our allocation of 2014s is quite small, so don't delay in obtaining some of these luscious wines! David Lillie

Lafouge 2014 Auxey-Duresses Rouge

This is one of our favorite, if somewhat unknown, estates in Burgundy. Jean Lafouge and his son Gilles make classic, balanced, beautiful Burgundies at affordable prices and their village level Auxey-Duresses is always lovely and a great value. The 2014 is slightly riper than usual with lovely aromas of strawberry and tart cherry, with violet, rose, citrus and spice. Medium-bodied, with citrusy red fruits on the palate with great balance and refreshing acidity, the wine shows hints of earth and mineral that will develop nicely with time. Lovely now, especially if decanted well in advance, and a great pairing with poultry, white meats and mild cheeses. This has the weight and structure to cellar well, best perhaps in 5 to 8 years.  David Lillie

Lafouge 2013 Auxey-Duresses Les Hautés Blanc

From a north-facing parcel fairly high on the slope next to Meursault Les Vireuils. Subtle, rather delicate aromas of lime-flower and citrus, with white fruits, stone and honeysuckle. The palate is fresh and bright with mineral flavors predominating, with pear, lemon peel and herbal notes, quite pure and refreshing. The opposite of an oaky fruit-bomb, this is a light and lovely Chardonnay of terroir that will accompany shellfish, sole, flounder, cod and young goat cheeses.

Lafouge 2013 Meursault Les Meix Chavaux

One of our favorite producers in Burgundy, Jean and Gilles Lafouge make beautiful wines which offer tremendous  value. Les Meix Chavaux  located beneath Les Luchets and adjacent to Les Chevalières. Lafouge's vines are 80 years old planted in calcareous clay producing Meursault with  textbook richness and minerality. The 2014 shows lemon blossom citrus peel and chalk on the aromas with a discreet touch of oak. The mid-weight palate offers flavors of ripe stone fruits and notes of Meyer lemon surrounding a chalky core of minerality. This shows poise and energy and while delicious now should round out with more time in the bottle. Wonderful with crab or lobster, better still with roasted whole fish or chicken. John McIlwain

Lafouge 2013 Meursault Les Casses-Têtes

(Whether you're entertaining royalty or hosting your family and friends, a good Meursault is a fine choice for Thanksgiving!  The Lafouge Casses-Tetes is a rare and beautiful wine that will grace your holiday table at a resonable price - 24 bottles available.) The hillside lieu-dit Les Casses Têtes is located high on the slope above the premier cru Les Gouttes d'Or and next to Le Tesson. The soils are thin and rocky, producing wines of great energy and lift. The 2013 Lafouge is a very pale gold color with aromas of wet stone, pear, fresh herbs and lemon peel with hints of oak. The palate is crystalline and vibrant with stony acidity and flavors of marcona almonds, bitter lemon, dried pear and saline minerals. This is a beautifully structured Meursault to drink now in its youth with any elegant fish or chicken preparation, or cellar for ten to fifteen years or more. David Lillie

Lafouge 2013 Auxey-Duresses 1er Cru La Chapelle

Often the most satisfying of the three Lafouge Auxey-Duresses Premier Crus, the monopole  "La Chapelle" is mostly from 50 to 70 year-old vines, on the south-east facing hillside bordering on Monthelie. The 2013 shows elegant, quite ripe wild strawberry and black cherry aromas with graphite, cocoa and spice. The palate is beautifully structured with red fruit liqueur, violet, earth and stone flavors with nice depth and firm acidity. Decant or open the day before to drink now, with grilled pork, guinea hen, duck and mild cheeses. Cellar five to ten years for a peak experience. David Lillie

Bart 2015 Marsannay Rosé

A lovely rose of Pinot Noir from Martin Bart in Marsannay, the 2015 shows a bit more weight than usual in this excellent vintage for Burgundy. Pale pink color. Pretty hints of strawberry lead to a refreshing palate of berry, citrus and red-currant fruit with good acidity. This is a lovely wine that will be very versatile at the table and refreshingly delicious by itself all summer long (and fall and winter, too) and it's a great value!

Bart 2014 Bourgogne Pinot Noir

The Bart Bourgogne Rouge shows a deeper color than usual, as  abundant sunshine in August and September brought nice ripeness to this difficult vintage. The aromas of black cherry and raspberry are ripe but fresh and balanced with pretty hints of violet, pepper citrus and cocoa. The red currant and raspberry fruits on the palate are round and pretty and finish with nice citrusy acids. This is a lovely everyday Pinot Noir that will drink beautifully with burgers,  grilled chicken and mild cheeses, served nicely cool.

Bart 2014 Marsannay Les Saints-Jacques

Martin Bart, now joined by nephew Pierre, makes lovely Marsannay from many different single-vineyards. One of our favorites is always the light and lovely "Saint Jacques" from vines at the top of the slope near Couchey on thin stony soils. The wine shows good ripeness in 2014 while retaining its fresh. floral character, showing pretty aromas of ripe wild-strawberry and tart cherry with hints of earth, violet, citrus and brown spice. The palate shows rich but lively red and black fruits with a bit of grilled meat and earth balanced nicely by citrusy acids. This gains elegance and purity with time open and has a nice mineral kick in the finish. This is a very pretty young Burgundy that will benefit from a few years in the cellar. Decant if drinking now, serve cool with chicken and mushrooms, guinea hen, duck and mild cheeses. Great value! David Lillie

Bart 2014 Marsannay Au Champ Salomon

When it comes to Marsannay, Domaine Bart's selection of crus is an embarrassment of riches. Au Champ Salomon, one of their best, is located in a prime spot on the mid-slope, producing wines which marry power with elegance and longevity. The grapes from 35-year-old plus vines are hand harvested, fermented with native yeasts, aged for 18 months in barrel of which only 30% are new. The 2014 is another lovely expression. The nose offers cool-toned aromas of red and black cherry, red plum, brambles, and hints of cedar evolving to show dark soil notes. On the full-bodied and structured (in terms of Marsannay) palate, flavors of red and black stone fruit dominate with wild cherry and plum, giving way to grilled meat and earthy notes on a long, succulent,  and persistent finish. There is a deft interplay between the pure fruit, tangy acid, and tannins which should evolve to show greater complexity still with 5-7 years in the cellar and beyond. This is not only a splendid 2014, but a great value in Burgundy. John McIlwain
