A rooftop in August: the perfect place to beat the heat (in NYC, anyways).

End-of-Summer Heat Wave? Time For Rosé!

Share

Even though we might not like to acknowledge it, the end of summer is right around the corner. But do not fear! It is still incredibly hot, and looks like it will stay that way for a while longer. Good thing we have the perfect rosé to pair with sweltering late-summer afternoon barbecues and the ever-so-slowly waning hours of sunlight: Nicolas Gonin’s 2015 Mondeuse Rosé!

A bonafide jack-of-all-trades, Nicolas trained as an enologist in Beaune before working for the likes of Domaine Tempier, and he is the Vice President of the Pierre Galet Alpine Ampelography Centre. Named after the famed 20th century ampelographer, this ambitious group scours historical documents and small family vineyards that dot Isère, looking for ancient grape varietals that have long been forgotten.

Nicolas’ own vineyards cover 5.5 hectares planted in sandstone-rich, gravelly soils and have been certified organic since 2012. Fermentation is done with indigenous yeasts and elévage in enamel-lined concrete vats, which Nicolas thinks are optimal for minimal impact on the wines. Sulfur additions are as little as possible and are made a few days before bottling (which is done without fining or filtration), a length of time Nicolas deems crucial to the SO2’s integration with the finished wine as opposed to many winemakers’ practice of adding sulphur as the wine is being bottled.

Not only is Nicolas’ rosé a fantastic value for the amount of care that he puts into all aspects of his work, it is one of the most anticipated arrivals of summer among Chambers Street customers and staff alike (last year’s inaugural release proved dangerously gulpable). And even though these hot, sunny days will slowly give way to cool, blustery ones, right now it’s time for a bottle of refreshing rosé to beat this heat! Tim Gagnon

Gonin 2015 Mondeuse Rose

The second vintage of Nicolas’ rosé is here! It is a blend of Mondeuse, Pinot Noir, and Gamay planted in soils rich with sandstone. The grapes are allowed to ferment naturally in concrete tanks and are bottled with a minimal amount of S02, making for a fresh and zippy wine that’s sure to quench your thirst! Cranberries, clementine, and ripe black cherries come to mind on the nose along with a more exotic note of guava. On the palate it is dry and lean with minerals, juicy watermelon and an invigorating acidity. At 11% in alcohol, and an excellent value for a truly well-made wine, we’ll be reaching for this this all year long. Tim Gagnon
