Lauer 2015ers : Flo(rian) Knows Saar Riesling

Our group was in the Peter Lauer tasting room, collectively gawking at old bottles, Lauer Schnapps(!), and the formidable number of samples we would soon be tasting through. Florian Lauer joined us and, after giving an amazing historical and geological primer on the region, the epic tasting began. Florian Lauer is a font of knowledge, which flows from him with such casual confidence, that it becomes clear that he is deeply invested in all the facets of his life’s work. Looking back at my notes on the wines, there is a lot to revisit. Thank goodness for notes. I would have never remembered off-hand that Lambertskirch was replanted using selection massale cuttings from 5 different old vine vineyards along the Mosel, or that this was the specific tasting in which Tobias coined my new favorite Riesling tasting term "dog-whistle acidity." I don't have a photographic memory (or even that great of a short-term one), but I do remember on a visceral level how much I loved these wines, some of which were still barrel samples at the time. A few of those bottles won't be with us until January or February, but until then, we have lots to drink!

Along with the Grosses Gewächs (GG) bottlings, Weingut Peter Lauer is known for their dry-tasting wines: those Rieslings that do not ferment fully trocken, but have enough acidity to be harmonious and bright, not saccharine and cloying. The Saar is an ideal region for this style, with cooler winds helping to temper the sunny weather, keeping acidity levels high in the grapes. Florian is currently farming some of the finest sites in the Saar, and has taken huge steps to preserve their integrity. He has gone so far as to petition to be able to use the original site names on his labels, which from 1971 until 2014, wasn’t allowed by law.

Florian does not make (residually sweet) Prädikat wines every vintage, but the condtions in 2015 were favorable. Florian selects grapes that are ripening faster, or are already showing signs of botrytis. The grapes for the Prädikat wines are often picked earlier than those used for the single vineyard and GG wines. 2015's intense ripeness levels aside, the electric acidity is also loud and clear in the Prädikat wines, making for invigorating drinking!

We are very excited to offer the Lauer 2015s on pre-arrival (arriving late September/early October), and look forward to offering the GGs in the new year!  Cari Bernard

Lauer, Peter 2015 Saar Ayler Kupp Riesling Unterstenberg

I've heard Ayler Kupp described as looking much like a whale, its long, broad back extending at length with a steep slope downward into the valley. I thoroughly enjoy the comparison, and when I was standing on the insane precipice at Schonfels looking across the valley at the Kupp, I kept glancing at the mammoth green beast, just hoping for some sort of evidence of breathing. Unterstenberg is a site near the bottom of the Kupp, which makes for higher water retention in the soil and an accumulation of eroded slate. Creamy, vegetal, floral, and a touch of petrol on the nose, the wine is spicy and powerful, with bright notes of nectarine skin, and yellow apricot, the finish is long, saline, and fruity.  Cari Bernard

Lauer, Peter 2015 Saar Ayler Kupp Riesling Stirn

Located near the top of the Ayler Kupp where the hill curves around ('Stirn' meaning forehead), the cooler climate and wind at this altitude makes for a site that is often harvested last. Aromas of prickly pear, white grapefruit, and ginger greet you from the glass. The wine is very vibrant with high tones of lemon, white peach, and grapefruit on the palate. There is a stony intensity balanced by a slight weightiness. The wine is also both floral and herbaceous and has a very long finish. This wine can age. Florian says seven years is a sweet spot, but you can go for ten and onward. If you are drinking sooner than that, please decant. Cari Bernard

Lauer, Peter 2015 Saar Ayler Kupp Riesling Kern Fass 9

Kern takes its name from the person that cleared this portion of the hill for vines in the early 20th century. The Kern vineyard sits near the Neuenberg, with a southwest orientation. Here we have an off-dry offering, quite exotic and tropical at first nose, the palate is dense and very high in acid, tongue-buzzingly so! The residual sugar comes through the acidity as juicy (almost candied) peach alongside papaya and mango. Cari Bernard

Lauer, Peter 2015 Saar Ayler Kupp Riesling Neuenberg

The Lauer portion of Neuenberg is located on the flank of the Kupp closer to the base of the slope. Paraffin wax and orange oil on the nose, the wine has intense extraction and texture and needs time to fully develop. Notes of peach skin, dried apricot, spicy, salty vibrancy all point to a compexity that will lend itself well to long-term aging. Cari Bernard

Lauer, Peter 2015 Saar Riesling Fass 8 Kabinett

Not made every vintage, this is a great foil to the Lambertskirch Kabinett, with soil and grass (instead of flowers) on the nose, and a ripe, dense palate. All that being said, this is still Lauer here, so expect high-tones of lemon zest, with ripe peaches and nectarines--positively vibrant. Cari Bernard

Lauer, Peter 2015 Saar Lambertskirsch Riesling Kabinett

Lambertskirch is a parcel, not too far from Schonfels, that during its long history has gone from vines to fruit trees and forest overgrowth. Florian cleared and replanted the 0.2 hectares in 2012. 2015 is the second vintage from this predominately southeast-facing site where large, gray slate stones litter the ground between the vines. Floral with nectarine skin on the nose, the wine is practically vibrating, shimmering with acidity and tension. The palate is a touch more linear and lighter than the Fass 8 Kabinett, with fresh flavors of ripe nectarine, floral stems and petals, salinity and finely-integrated residual sugar. Cari Bernard

Lauer, Peter 2015 Saar Saarfeilser Riesling BA Feils 375 mL

Saarfeilser is a Grand Cru site across the river from Ayler Kupp, with a warmer climate and higher levels of gravel in the soil. A rich, redolent nose of golden raisins and ginger, the palate is incredibly fresh with acidity, notes of citron, candied stone fruit, mango, and saffron. This is a hauntingly beautiful wine and prime example of the alchemy possible with Riesling. Cari Bernard

Lauer, Peter 2015 Saar Ayler Kupp Riesling Fass 6 'Senior'

Lauer ‘Senior’ is Florian’s nod to making a style of wine his grandfather (Peter Lauer Sr.) would enjoy. His aim was to make an everyday wine, and price it accordingly. The grapes are sourced from a younger plot of vines near the base of the Kern vineyard. For the price, the level of complexity is outstanding. There is a warmth to the nose, along with savory herbs, iced tea, and a touch of slate. The palate is tart and bright; crisp with notes of green plum, underripe nectarine, apricot kernel, and Arnold Palmer (the beverage) on the long finish. Cari Bernard
