Breton, Catherine et Pierre 2011 Bourgueil Les Perrieres

Tasted twice in February 2016 and 2017, the 2011 Les Perrières has impressed both times with it's structure and complexity, showing dense, deep earthy red fruits with meaty and herbal notes. There is ample tannin for aging, but there is good ripeness that opens up nicely with decanting. This superb Bourgueil will accompany grilled pork and beef and full-flavored cheeses. Decant 3 to 4 hours in advance if serving now, or cellar - best perhaps 2020 to 2030. DL

Gonzalez Byass NV Jerez Tres Palmas Fino 500ml

Gonzalez Byass' Palmas series is an exploration of the most extreme and elegant expressions of the soleras that feed Tio Pepe - arguably the world's most consistent, classic, and popular fino sherry. Tres Palmas 2015 is a selection of a single cask in a ten year-old (average) solera, which stood out as the only cask among 150 where a small amount of flor had survived. A dramatic and drop-dead delicious pairing for rich smoked fishes, duck, and roes, Tres Palmas exhibits immense complexity from spicy aromas hinting at cinnamon oil and bark, to the intensely savory, shape-shifting, palate that showcases autolytic flavors and textures, umami and rancio, as Gonzalez Byass puts it: "the limit between life and death, the agony of the flor." Pellehaut 1989 Armagnac Ténarèze Ugni Blanc

This Armagnac shows a vibrant orange color with hints of caramel. Tastes mature, but even after 24 years in cask there is a grippy quality and some citrus-toned fruit. This is an excellent introduction to vintage Armagnac and a fabulous value.  John Rankin

Larmandier-Bernier 2010 Champagne Grand Cru Extra Brut Les Chemins D'Avize

A relatively new cuvée for Pierre Larmandier, Les Chemins d'Avize was born of a desire to vinify, separately, two of his best parcels (Le Chemin de Plivot & Le Chemin de Flavigny), which had previously been included in the blend for his Longitude cuvée. Desire drove perseverance for Pierre, in the form of acquiring a new, smaller press to use with grapes from these two chalky sites. Les Chemins shines a stately golden yellow in the glass and sports a super-fine mousse. The nose shows delicate aromas of white flowers, lime-wood, chestnuts, and thyme. While palate courses with a finely-grained minerality that carries tones of Meyer lemons, chamomile, and white peaches through to a salty, savory finish. From vineyard to cellar to bottle this speaks volumes of two great Côte des Blancs terroirs and of one of Champagne's great growers. (Disgorged 11/14).

La Vizcaina (Raul Perez) 2013 Bierzo La del Vivo

La Vizcaina is a project from Raul Perez that focuses on vineyard sites around his hometown of Vatuille de Abajoin northern Castilla y Leon. The “La del Vivo” blanco is made from Godello sourced from two single vineyards planted in 1940 and 1925, one on clay and one on sand. 80% of the grapes are fermented and raised in large oak barrels for a year, while the remaining 20% is vinified on the skins in amphorae, where it ages for a year, before both cuvees are blended together. On the nose this wine is meaty, smoky, like rendered lamb fat. Underlying notes of pine cones, lemon, grilled lemon and hazelnuts. The palate is rich, with medium acidity and a long, persistent finish. Grilled citrus is even more present, along with a strong note of wet stones and wet earth. A faint whiff of dried white flowers and chamomile rounds out this complex white. Oskar Kostecki

Carmarans, Nicolas 2014 Vin de Pays de l'Aveyron Selves (Chenin)

The wines of Nicolas Carmarans never fail to reflect the natural, rugged beauty of the region from where they are made. A stand out during a recent tasting was Selves made from 100% Chenin Blanc from vines aged anywhere from 5-50 years old that are planted in granitic soils. The nose is very pretty with seashells, white flowers, a touch of smoke, and ripe tropical melon. On the palate it is lean and mineral, complete with mouth-coating, fleshy tropical fruit, a racy acidity, and beautiful tension. Chenin Blanc isn’t usually what comes to mind when thinking of Aveyron, but this is something special. Tim Gagnon

Marnes Blanches (Geraud Fromont) 2014 Cotes du Jura Savagnin En Quartre Vis

Although the 2015 vintage of this wine just became available, we wanted to highlight the 2014 as it is drinking beautifully right now. The Savagnin for this cuvée is sourced from a few different parcels, all of them vinified separately in neutral barrique before being blended together in stainless steel tank before bottling. It has all of the classic lusciousness that Savagnin can offer while also displaying wonderful purity and tension. This wine definitely has the structure to age well, as long as you have the will power! Tim Gagnon

Eyrie Vineyards 2014 Dundee Hills Original Vine Reserve Pinot Gris

Eyrie Vineyards is one of the original historic wine estates in Oregon. It was officially founded by David and Diana Lett in 1966 when they planted their vineyards in the Red Hills of Dundee, about 30 miles southwest of Portland. The winery was built in nearby McMinville and the first vintage to be produced and bottled was the 1970. The Pinot Gris vines were originally planted in 1966 and are own-rooted and dry farmed. The Pinot Gris is very lush with a crunchy texture. On the nose, nectarine, golden raisin, and cantaloupe aromas emerge. On the palate, ripe summer peach and dried herbs. This is truly one one of the benchmark wines in Oregon, let alone the United States. Jonas Mendoza

Tentenublo 2014 Rioja Escondite del Ardacho El Abundillano

The El Abundillano vineyard is situated at 590 meters of altitude and shares the same marl, iron and chalk soils as the Las Paredes site. Made from 90% Garnacha, 9% Tempranillo and 1% Malvasia, El Abundillano is aged 9 months in Hungarian oak with no racking. Rounder and darker toned than Las Paredes with distinct notes of cured meat, spicy black fruit, pepper and wild herbs, only 20% of the grapes are de-stemmed accounting for a fresh, verdant quality that marries beautifully with the underlying sanguine character of the wine. Sara i René Viticultor 2013 Priorat Partida Pedrer Tinto

Rene Barbier Jr. planted his Partida Pedrer vineyard to Garnatxa in 2000 (with a little bit of Mourvedre). Fermented and aged in small, unlined, locally made clay  amphora, with no SO2 additions, this is a profound red Priorat with exotic aromas of iron and earth, black fruits, wild berries and oregano. The palate is juicy and wild, with earthy black plums and berries, rich red beets, robust tannin and acid anchored by broad, slately, minerality. A robust and transparent expression of a powerful place, particularly suited to lamb stews and braises in rich sauce. Ariana Rolich

Thevenet, Jean-Paul 2014 Morgon Vieilles Vignes

Always one of the greatest of Beaujolais. From 4.75 hectares near Le Clachet, from vines averaging 70 years of age, with some planted before World War One. About 2,000 cases are produced. Vineyard work is biodynamic, fermentation is with wild yeasts at a moderately low temperature (10 - 13 degrees Celsius). Aging is mostly in old barrels from DRC with minimal extraction. 2014 was a classic vintage for Beaujolais, as poor early weather gave way to sunshine from mid-August, producing well-balanced wines with good ripeness and firm acidity. The 2014 Thevenet shows reduction, then complex aromas of red currant, strawberry, earth, violet, blood orange, spice  and licorice. The palate shows bright red currant and berry liqueur with mineral, citrus, rose and spice. The finish is firm with fruit and mineral flavors with good density and length. Decant if drinking now, this superb Morgon will be best from 2020 to 2025 and beyond.

Baudry 2013 Chinon La Croix Boissée

From young and old vines in a superb south-facing hillside vineyard of thin clay over limestone soils in Cravant. 24 months of aging in 2 to 4 year-old barriques. The difficult vintage of 2013 gave very low yields and less alcohol than usual, but the 2013 Croix Boissée is a superb, elegant Chinon that will age well and resembles a light, old fashioned Burgundy. The aromas are lovely and very floral with raspberry and red currant fruit. The palate is extremely mineral, not fat but with pretty red fruit, spice and earthy flavors over firm acidity. Given the vintage, this is an astonishingly good Chinon, but not exactly a fruit-bomb, that should be superb when mature, perhaps 2025 to 2035, and delicious young for those who appreciate more terroir than fruit in their Chinon.

Balthazar 2013 Cornas Chaillot

From organically farmed vines in the granitc soils of Chaillot, fermented with native yeasts, whole cluster, and aged in 600 liter casks. The 2013 has a dark robe with aromas of blackberry, violets, tree bark, black tea and pepper. The mid-weight palate offers flavors of wild blackberry, Italian plum, game, and a nearly saline earthiness from the granite. Though by no means a bruiser, this shows good density on the palate with fine (though certainly present) tannins and fresh acidity.  Enjoyable now, with decanting, this is poised, layered, and harmonious. Better still with 3 to 8 years in the bottle. Somewhat feminine for a Cornas from Chaillot, but truly delicious. John McIlwain

Texier 2013 Côte-Rôtie Vieilles Vignes

This is Eric Texier's second harvest from a parcel of old vines on gneiss in Semons, at the southern end of the appellation. "Ridiculous, minuscule yield" says Eric. Aged for 12 months in 5-year-old Burgundy barrels, SO2 adjusted to a total of 35 mg/l at bottling. 556 bottles and 12 magnums produced. The wine shows very subtle aromas of black-raspberry, violet, white pepper, earth and musk. The palate is intense, but relatively light, even austere with cool acidity and very structured berry fruits. The finish is tight with red fruits and firm citrusy acids. Three days later the wine is really quite elegant with blueberry, olive, licorice and smoke appearing in the nose, the palate is more mineral and meaty with blackberry, slate, olive and citrus. This is a very well-built Côte-Rôtie that should be a lovely old-school wine when mature. David Lillie

Clos du Joncuas 2005 Gigondas Esprit de Grenache VV

This is Gigondas at its finest! 100% Grenache from old vines, fermented in cement, and aged in large oak vats before being bottled unfined and unfiltered with minimal added sulphur. It gives you that classic Grenache mustiness – like blackberries and blueberries smashed onto the forest floor – but also more fresh and delicate notes of nutmeg and strawberries. Hints of grapefruit peel, vine tomato and pine offer added depth. Given its age, it is still incredibly energetic on the palate with wonderfully resolved tannins and ripe black berry fruit. Truly a complex and delicious wine with a long life ahead of it! Tim Gagnon

Pierre André 2010 Châteauneuf-du-Pape

We consider Domaine Pierre André to be one of the greatest estates in Châteuneuf-du-Pape. Organic since 1980 (one of the first in the AOC) and Biodynamic since 1992. The red is 90% Grenache with Syrah, Mourvedre, Cinsault, Vacarese, Counoise, Muscadin and Picpoul. Some parcels are over 100 years old, with the average vine age around 65 years. The 2010 is a tighter and more structured wine than the voluptuous 2009, an elegant Chateauneuf-du-Pape that is built to last! Tasted last winter, it showed aromas of ripe blackberry with spice, earth, tar, smoke and floral notes. Fabulous palate with deep black fruits with spice, garrigue, earth and saline minerals. Terrific length and density, just opening slightly but ideally give this wine at least five more years and enjoy until 2035. Just a great bottle of Châteauneuf,  one of our favorites from this great vintage!  Highly recommended.  David Lillie

La Lagune 2001 Haut Médoc

From a somewhat underappreciated vintage, the 2001 Chateau La Lagune is beginning to hit its stride. The nose offers aromas of blackberry, cassis, hints of cedar, violets, and stone. The mid-weight palate displays black fruits, notes of underbrush, white pepper, and herbs. The tannins are resolving, though still present and the finish long and pleasingly bright. This hits all the right notes and will pair beautifully with grilled lamb, steak or even a perfectly cooked burger. John McIlwain

Foradori 2013 Vigneti delle Dolomiti Teroldego

Teroldego is a relatively unknown Italian grape variety that hails from the Dolomite mountains in the far North of Italy. It's full of peppery alpine minerality, and dense, plummy somewhat Syrah-like fruit. In Elisabetta Foradori's talented hands the Teroldego vine truly creates something special through very low yields and passionate agriculture. A wine with plenty to offer to both the hardcore wine geek and the traditionalist.

Adalia 2014 Valpolicella Ripasso Superiore "Balt"

In the early 1980s, Marinella quit her job as an accountant and moved to the family's five hectare farm 13 kilometers northeast of Verona. She’s the first in her family to make wine and learned primarily by doing -- reading books, tasting lots of wine and experimenting. Now she and her partner Hector farm 40 hectares, 20 of which are vineyards. Marinella has always farmed organically and has long worked biodynamically. Ripasso (given its own DOC in 2007) is a blend of Corvina, Mollinara, and Rondinella; and is kind of the half-way point between Valpolicella and Amarone. After pressing the dried grapes that make Amarone, the extra skins are used for the second fermentation of Valpolicella. Adalia's Ripasso is a beautifully complex wine, ripe with blackberries and hints of dried oregano, mint, liquorice, tobacco leaves and peat. Christine Manula

Fornacina 2011 Brunello di Montalcino

Fornacina 2011 Brunello is a rich wine from a ripe vintage showing slightly roasted black cherry fruit and notes of tobacco, rosemary, and tar.  the palate is dense with plenty of tannin and mouthwatering acidity showing more overtly fruity than the nose with a slight ferrous touch on the finish. Drinking well now the wine will certainly continue to age for another 10 years.  The estate was certified organic in 2004 and only produces the Brunello from their own grapes in a traditional style: native yeast fermentation, raised in Slavonian botti for 3 years, and rested in bottle for 1 year. Try it with leg of lamb, grilled steak, or especially rich pork dishes. Andy Paynter

Monte Bernardi 2012 Chianti Classico Riserva Sa' Etta

This single-vineyard wine is from a small vineyard (2.5 hectares, Biodynamic viticulture) tucked into the hills south of Panzano, in Tuscany — prime Chianti Classico terroir. The wine is medium-bodied, with rich and lush/concentrated notes of red and black currants that intermingle with violets, clay and earth with a long finish.

Roddolo 2009 Barolo Ravera

This is Ravera di Monforte, not the more familiar Ravera of Barolo / Novello (of Cogno and G. Rinaldi fame). Ravera di Monforte is off the beaten path – hidden in a fold of the land just west of Boscaretto and Cascina Francia; it’s not a spot you would go by accident unless you were very lost. This Ravera is quite small, and is surrounded by woods; the atmosphere is idyllic and kind of magical – a mood that’s strengthened by the organic and non-interventionist style of farming practiced there by Roddolo and by Ferdinando Principiano. Roddolo’s Ravera 2009 is surprisingly open and drinkable now – extremely suave and lifted, with depth and structure giving length to what initially might seem like an easy wine. I can only imagine this getting better and better. Jamie Wolff

Turley 2014 Howell Mountain Zinfandel Rattlesnake Ridge

Rattlesnake Ridge is a certified organic vineyard located at the top of Howell Mountain at about 2,600 feet. Among my favorite Zinfandels of the 2014 Turley class, Rattlesnake Ridge is quite aromatic with scintillating aromas and flavors of black cherry compote, blood orange, clove, and oriental spice. A Zinfandel with both power and elegance. Jonas Mendoza

Corison, Cathy 2013 Napa Cabernet Sauvignon

Cathy Corison's wines eschew the bold, heavy-handed flavors and dollops of massive French oak embraced by her Napa Valley counterparts, instead focusing on teasing deeply concentrated, ripened fruit from the deep, stony alluvial soils in her benchland vineyards in Rutherford and St. Helena. With dark fruit and violet notes, this Cabernet is delicately light on the palate, but impresses with allusive black cherry and black tea flavors, and meaty undertones. A quintessential example of power intersecting with elegance. Jonas Mendoza

Huet 2008 Vouvray Le Haut Lieu Moelleux

*This wine is in the warehouse and will not be available for pick-up or delivery until after Labor Day.

2008 is a great vintage for moelleux and demi-sec Vouvray as the high acidity of the vintage gives fabulous brightness and balance to the extra sweetness. The Huet 2008 Haut-Lieu is superb now with terrines, foie gras, vegetable soups, mild cheeses and much more - and don't hesitate to age ten more years.

Chateau de Leberon 1986 Armagnac 750ml

Château de Leberon covers 12 hectares in Ténareze, with vines planted in chalky soils over a limestone base. I find that this terroir really shines through in well-made Armagnacs from this region as they tend to have a brighter acidity and minerality not found in neighboring Bas-Armagnac where the spirits tend to be more powerful. This estate uses trees found on the property to make their barrels and that there are no additives (including water to dilute the spirit) added at any time. The grapes used for distillation are Ugni Blanc and Colombard and after distillation the spirit spends a full 29 years in barrel before bottling, and each cask is bottled separately. There is incredibly bright fruit redolent of grapefruit, lemon peel, and stewed apple with deeper aromas of oiled leather, pipe tobacco, baking spice, and rancio. The palate is robust and rich, but carries a graceful salinity and lifted acidity. It’s truly one of the most elegant Armagnacs I’ve come across. Tim Gagnon
