We find ourselves, as we often do, with a nice collection of unique and unusual wines from the Loire Valley which feature some of our favorite grape varieties - Pineau D'Aunis, Pineau de la Loire (Chenin Blanc), Menu Pineau and Romorantin.

Sebastien Cornille, the talented winemaker at Domaine de la Roche Bleue in Jasnières makes outstanding Chenin Blancs. His 2014s arrived earlier this summer to great acclaim and we've now received his delicious reds and a sparkling rosé, made primarily from Pineau D'Aunis and Chenin Blanc. They're silky, supple, light and refreshing with gorgeous fruit - really delightful wines that will unfortunately dissapear quickly due to the tiny quantities produced. We urge you to try some before they're gone.

Jean-Marie and Thierry Puzelat at the Clos du Tue-Boeuf have been making some of the finest natural wines in France for over twenty years. Among their many micro-cuvées is a lovely Chenin Blanc (labeled Pineau de la Loire), a superb Pineau D'Aunis and a scintillating Menu Pineau. These are some of the most delicious and fascinating wines of the Loire Valley.

The jovial Hervé Villemade took over the family's vines in Cellettes (Touraine) in 1995 and converted to organic farming and low or zero-sulfur winemaking starting in 2000. He makes some of the best Romorantin on the planet (there isn't very much!) and his two new releases, "Les Saules" and "Acacia" are perhaps the best he has produced. These are superb wines to drink now and will age indefinitely.

And speaking of Menu Pineau, our friend Christophe Foucher at La Lunotte makes the most natural example of this unique grape from his organic vineyards near the Clos Roche Blanche in Touraine. Aged in small old barrels and bottled with zero added sulfur, it's pure juice that needs decanting and aeration but it's a complex and delicious experience for lovers of natural wines.

La Lunotte (Chistophe Foucher) 2015 Vin de France Haut Plessis (Menu Pineau)

Christophe Foucher at La Lunotte makes brilliant natural wines on his tiny estate in Coufy, near our friends at Clos Roche Blanche in Touraine. He practices uncompromising organic work in the vineyard and vinifies without sulfur and bottles by hand. This is a superb Menu Pineau, combining density of fruit with the unusual high-acid character of the grape. From very low-yielding vineyards above the Cher river, near St Aignan.  It's a richer style with more skin contact than those of Puzelat/Tue-Boeuf. Christophe transfers his wines from tank into small barrels as soon as the fermentation is under way, where they stay until bottling by hand without filtration. More of an "orange wine" in 2015, the wine shows complex aromas of citrus peel, pear, peach and almond with dried fruits and brown spice. The palate is ripe and full, with firm acidity, showing candied citrus, hay, ripe pear, apricot and stone with white fruits and minerals in the finish. This is an unusual and delicious natural wine - serve with fish or chicken in sauce, full-flavored sushi, and flavorful cheeses. David Lillie

Roche Bleue 2015 Coteaux du Loir La Belle D'Aunis

Fans of taut, aromatically  complex light reds (think Piedmontese Ruché or a well-crafted carbonic Gamay) take note! Sébastien Cornille has hit it out of the park with this 100% Pineau d'Aunis: freshly cracked pepper and generous rose blossoms on the nose lead into crisp red strawberries,  cherries, and sweet plum skins. The snap of tannin on the finish is addictive, bracing the palate for more while the earthiness is pleasingly textural, countering soft, sheer aromatics with a cool mineral crunch. This bottling of what is often used as a blending grape takes full advantage of the clay, silex, and limestone soils and meticulous farming at Roche Bleue to craft a terroir and varietal expressive wine that is a must for lovers of floral, lighter-bodied reds. Delicious served with a  slight chill. Karina Mackow

Roche Bleue 2015 Coteaux du Loir La Guinguette

While we were already in love with the whites from Sébastien Cornille at Domaine de Roche Bleu, we weren’t sure what to expect from the reds. In short, we were blown away. They were lithe and energetic with underlying earthy, mineral notes and exuberant fruit. My personal favorite was La Guingette. Made from a blend of 80% Pineau d’Aunis and 20% Gamay sourced from 30+-year-old vines, it undergoes semi-carbonic maceration for 20 days in tank before the Pineau d’Aunis is pressed off to be aged in neutral barrique and the Gamay in tank. Compared to La Belle d’Aunis, it offers more density with velvety black cherry and strawberry fruit on top of white pepper, grapefruit pith, crushed violet petal, and a hint of sage. Tim Gagnon

Roche Bleue 2015 Vin de France La Petillante

Frothy pet nat deliciousness from Sébastien Cornille! Pineau D'Aunis and Chenin Blanc, fermented  in 6-8 year old barrels before being assembled at bottling in November. Secondary fermentation occurred naturally in the bottle and it was finally disgorged in July. The palate is fresh and invigorating, and loaded with subtle red and yellow fruits, tangerine, hints of spice and a honey-tinged stoniness. It’s a simple wine – fresh, dry, and easy to drink making it an excellent choice for parties of all kinds. To quote a colleague, “This is the perfect breakfast wine!”

This superb Pineau d'Aunis is from 40 year-old vines on soils of clay and silex over limestone of Blois. The wine is aged for 6 months in old barrels and was bottled and vinified with zero added sulfur. The aromas are floral with ripe raspberry, blackberry and blood orange, with pepper, brown spice, and animal notes. Tue-Boeuf 2015 Vin de France Pineau de la Loire (Chenin)

Jean-Marie and Thierry Puzelat make this delightful Chenin Blanc, aka Pineau de la Loire, from  organically farmed 40 to 50 year-old vines near Saint-Aignan in Touraine. Although the 2015 vintage in the Loire is known for a high level of ripeness, the aromas ae surprisingly austere with stone, citrus and herbal notes over  pear liqueur and slightly buttery fruit. The palate is relatively light, round and mineral with chalky acidity supporting subtle pear, almond and exotic fruit, and there is a nice mineral finish.  There's a bit a CO2 and proabably no added sulfur, giving a fresh "glou-glou" character to this very natural Chenin. It's a lovely wine that makes you want another glass... David Lillie

Villemade 2014 Cour-Cheverny Les Acacias

"Romorantin, the official grape of the Cour-Cheverny AOC, appreciates sandy clay/limestone soils where it offers a wine of great character that mixes elegant vegetal and floral notes (cut grass, violets, a touch of mint), often slightly honeyed with notes of ripe fruit (roast pear) lightly marked by the elevage in old barrels. The finish is fresh, tight with saline minerals and bitter anise. A wine with good aging potential." (Villemade.net)  In 2014, the "Les Acacias" is simply outstanding and very distinctive, offering aromas of ripe peach and pear with spice, floral, caramel and oxidative notes. The palate is very round and ripe with stone, peach, earth and almond flavors, with fabulous length with honeyed lemon, anise and minerals.  Superb wine, to drink now or in 10 to 20 years.
