In recent years, the effects of global warming have been felt in vineyards throughout the world. This has been particularly serious in France, where frost, hail and drought, formerly rare occurrences, have become common and more intense. In 2016, certain areas in Beaujolais, Burgundy, the Loire and Languedoc were hit with these disasters, one after the other. In the Loire Valley, for example, an unusually warm early Spring was followed by a hard frost on April 26 and 27, wiping out 70% to 100% of the crop in some vineyards. Widespread hailstorms in Chablis, Beaujolais and Languedoc had the same effect - an entire year’s work ruined by a night of frost or 15 minutes of hail, followed by drought that further reduced the tiny harvest that remained.
In response, Vendanges Solidaires was formed by a group of French retailers and restaurateurs to raise money for the most affected winemakers. Financial aid will go to those most in need - who have been established for less than ten years and who suffered 75% losses or more. Racines NY and Chambers Street Wines are joining the effort to aid the vignerons. Racines NY (94 Chambers St., 212-227-3400, www.racinesny.com) will donate $2 from every bottle of French wine sold from October 24th through November 5th. And Chambers Street Wines will donate $1 from every bottle of French wine sold at the store this weekend, October 29 - 30. In addition, those wishing to donate directly may do so by selecting the item below. Another option is to go to the new English language page of Vendanges Solidaires to make your donation through "Le Pot Commun:" http://www.vendangessolidaires.com/en/home/
Please join us to support vignerons in need. And please consider making a donation to Partners in Health to help the fight against cholera, and the devastation caused by Hurricane Matthew, in Haiti. Last Monday's benefit dinner at Racines, co-sponsored by CSW, David Bowler Wines and Louis/Dressner Selections was a big hit and raised a considerable sum for PIH - please use the following link for your donation: https://donate.pih.org/page/contribute/hurricane-matthew
