“This vintage shows all the splendor of Barolo. The best wines, and there are still many that continue to improve, are among the greatest we’ve tasted.” Sheldon Wasserman in Italy’s Noble Red Wines, (published in 1990).
Our friend MH has been asking us to put together a dinner of 1971 Barolo and Barbaresco, because, as he’s said, “it’s a famous vintage and I’ve never tasted any.” MH is a pretty serious wine lover, and it’s only right that we remedy the problem by inviting him, and you, to a BYOB dinner at Franny’s. I will bring 1971 Bartolo Mascarello Barolo, and 1971 Cappellano Barolo (one of my all-time favorite bottles) and another surprise, or two; you will bring any 1971 Barolo or Barbaresco you choose. Franny’s will supply their excellent food and service; dinner will be $150 including service and tax. 10 seats only!
PS: We expect at least some of these wines to sell quickly. To help avoid the frustration of ordering something that is already sold, please click-through to the website where you can see live inventory (whenever you refresh the page).
A consistently excellent wine — we've been lucky to get to taste this several times in the last few years. It needs a lot of time to breathe, and then it provides a classic example of fully mature Nebbiolo. Jamie Wolff
