Bordeaux after a long slumber is one of the delights of the wine world.

Aged Bordeaux from the Cellar of Mr. L and a Wine Dinner Celebrating the 1986 Vintage (mostly).

Share

For all the talk of Bordeaux being out of fashion, there are certainly a lot of Bordeaux lovers. Now we’ll be the first to decry the state of the modern version, but we’ll always have a place in our hearts for the wines from an earlier era. Perhaps you can chalk it up to nostalgia, but tasting well-cellared bottles from 25 to 30 years ago reaffirms the superb quality and deliciousness of the wines. Recently, a collector reached out to trim his collection and we jumped at the opportunity to offer the wines. We have a lovely assortment of Bordeaux from the 1980s; in original wooden cases, most were purchased as futures or upon release (with receipts) and stored in by the owner in a dark, cool, and damp home cellar until now. Mr. L purchased the wines to drink and we applaud his selections. The wines arrived Saturday and a sampling of various bottles for quality control affirmed the condition of the wines, in addition to reaffirming our love for the classic balance and elegance of fine claret.

It was 30 years ago today... Well almost. Please join us as we celebrate the 1986 vintage in Bordeaux with a selection of wines from both banks and Sauternes with a wild card or two. The 1986 Vintage was marked by a hot summer relieved by rain in the beginning of September. The harvest commenced in late September continuing into October. In their youth the many of the wines were a bit firm, but with time in the cellar they have blossomed into truly splendid wines. We will sample a number of wines paired with the superlative cuisine of Chef Duca at Racines Monday, January 30, at 7PM. The cost is $275, inclusive. We'll look forward to assesing the vintage and breaking out a couple of surprises from our cellar. John McIlwain

La Lagune 1985 Haut Médoc

Although 1985 was heralded as an excellent Right Bank vintage (especially Pomerol), many Left Bank Bordeaux wines are also drinking well 30 years later. Black truffle and compacted earth on the nose, leading into black plum and raspberry, macerated Morello cherry, saddle leather, carob, and dark chocolate on the palate. Drinking quite well on initial decant, this La Lagune continued to drink well several hours later. Jonas Mendoza (tasted 2/26/17)
