A Sparkling New Year to All!

Share

Although Chambers Street Wines is known for our outstanding selection of grower Champagnes, we are equally proud of the variety and quality of the Sparkling Wines that we offer throughout the year. And while "real" Champagne is always a treat, these superb and unique sparkling wines offer great value in an array of styles, and can turn your New Year's Eve into a fun and fascinating tasting event at a modest cost. Most of the wines offered today fall into two general categories, the first being Champagne method, or as the EU has decided to call it, "Methode Traditionelle," (with local variations) in which a base wine undergoes a secondary fermentation in bottle with added sugar and yeast, which is usually sweetened again when disgorged off the lees. The second, and increasingly popular style, is Petillant Naturel, or Méthode Ancestrale, in which a wine's fermentation is stopped (usually by chilling) at about 12 grams of sugar per liter. The wine is then bottled, with the fermentation continuing in the bottle, producing carbon-dioxide, sometimes finishing with a bit of sweetness, and bottled under a crown cap. Petillant Naturels can be quite refreshing and delicious and are frequently made without the addition of sulfur dioxide - you will find many fine examples in today's email. (Please note: the wonderful Raventos Rosé is also available in magnums and half-bottles.) Happy Sparkling New Year from everyone at Chambers Street!

Il Fortunato 2015 Rosato Vino Spumante Extra Dry (Organic, low SO2)

Il Fortunato aced it with their Rosato Spumante; another lively sparkler produced from organic vineyards with only a minimal addition of sulfur.  The nose is playful with a mix of bright berry fruits and fresh red cherries cut by tart apple skins.  On the palate, a delicate mousse lifts the wine showing some weight, great acidity, and just touch of sugar.  Absolutely lovely!  Pair with charcuterie, simple pasta, or simply drink on its own. Suriol 2013 Penedès Castell de Grabuac Cava Brut Nature

Suriol's bone-dry, certified organic Cava displays complex scents of herbs and honey, green apple, crystallized ginger, orange spice, vanilla bean, and white flowers, carrying through to a bright, tangy, palate of Asian pear, apricots, celery, and marzipan, with a tingle of ginger. Zero dosage and taut, more racy acidity than previous vintages make for a fresh and dry but terrifically substantial and sophisticated wine in the $15-20 price range. We all love Cava as an aperitif, but Suriol's is a flavorful and similarly terroir-assertive match for local fish simply grilled as well as briny, earthy crustaceans. Bravo to Assis Suriol and his family's exemplary vineyard work! Ariana Rolich

Minimus NV Experiment #17 48 Months Sparkling

Chad Stock's inspiration to make sparkling wine was Brut Nature Cava with long lees aging - a worthy fascination that should inform more new-world sparkling wine production! He has now released Experiment #17  (the same base wine as Experiment #10, disgorged after 24 months on the lees) this time disgorged after 48 months on the lees. Elegance and complexity are not guaranteed to increase with longer lees aging, but in this case the extra two years contributed great length and layers, harnessing the autolytic grit and glamour of our favorite long-aged Cavas. Creamy aromas of almond cake, agrumes, lavender honey, orange blossom, and yellow apple; the palate is dry, textured, long, and lovely, with gentle bubbles permeating the palate of yellow peach, Asian pear, meadow flowers and tea leaves, with gentle yeasty notes of bee pollen, chamomile, almond, brine, and a hint of bitter earth. This is dreamy wine, with enough breadth and complexity to compliment Captain Alex's smoked bluefish, shredded and tossed with herbs, lemon, and great olive oil, or a brunch of sliced smoked tuna with scrambled eggs. Les Capriades NV Vin de France Méthode Ancestrale Pet'Sec Rose

Up until this vintage, the only rosés available from Les Capriades were off-dry, but now there is finally a bone-dry cuvee! Made entirely from Gamay, it strikes a perfect balance of fruit and minerality which results in a zesty, refreshing wine awash in red berries, flowers, tangerine zest, and tart cranberries. This is the perfect sparkler to ring in the new year with. Tim Gagnon

Vignes du Maynes (Julien Guillot) 2012 Cremant de Bourgogne Extra-Brut Genevieve

Julien Guillot's 2012 Cremant Sainte Genevieve is simply brilliant, showing extraordinary aromas of red fruits, spiced pear and  blood orange with hints of cinnamon. The palate is creamy and full, with pear, red currant, honey, stone and brown spice with fabulous length. This is a beautiful living wine from soils that have never been treated with herbicides, pesticides or modern fertilizers. Highly recommended.  ** All fruit is from the Clos (25% Pinot Noir, 25% Gamay, 50% Chardonnay).

Pinon, François 2014 Touraine Brut Rosé (Malbec/Grolleau)

For years we kept seeing small piles of sparkling rosé lining the walls of Francois Pinon's cellar. Finally we asked — is there enough for a small shipment to NY? And so this delicious blend of Malbec and Grolleau - from vines planted by François' grandfather -  finally reached Chambers Street! The 2014 is a very pale orange/pink color with lovely aromas of strawberry, red currant and peach. The red fruits continue on the palate, balanced nicely by earth, citrus and mineral flavors that continue in the refreshing finish. This is a beautiful and crowd-pleasing rosé that's wonderful now and will drink beautifully for many years - a 1990 tasted a few years ago was sensational. Highly recommended. DL

Roche Bleue 2015 Vin de France La Petillante

Frothy pet nat deliciousness from Sébastien Cornille! Pineau D'Aunis and Chenin Blanc, fermented  in 6-8 year old barrels before being assembled at bottling in November. Secondary fermentation occurred naturally in the bottle and it was finally disgorged in July. The palate is fresh and invigorating, and loaded with subtle red and yellow fruits, tangerine, hints of spice and a honey-tinged stoniness. It’s a simple wine – fresh, dry, and easy to drink making it an excellent choice for parties of all kinds. To quote a colleague, “This is the perfect breakfast wine!”

All cellar functions by gravity, no pumping, fermentation in one to seven year-old barrels, approximately 12 months on the lees. From 40 year-old vines on sand and silex soils over limestone. This version is absolutely delicious with lovely aromas of pear, lime-flower, stone and caramel, quite subtle and complex. White fruits, citrus and stone on the palate with nice chalky, lemony length. Drink over the next three years. This is a beautiful wine and is highly recommended!

Jousset, Lise et Bertrand 2015 Montlouis-sur-Loire Bubulles Pet Nat

Simply put, this is top-shelf Pét-Nat for a picnic-friendly price. From organically farmed Chenin vines (45 years of age on average) in Montlouis-sur-Loire in soils of sand and silex over limestone. All cellar operations are by gravity, without pumping, the fermentation is in 3 to 6 year-old barriques of 225 and 400 liters. The wine is vibrant straw yellow and adorned with a fine mousse. The nose reveals aromas of ripe pear, Granny Smith, lime flower, creamy lemon with heather honey and stone. A finely chiseled palate is a bit off-dry with hints of dried pear, apple and anise over a core of saline minerals with terrific length. This is a thirst-quenching Pet-Nat, made without sulfur, that happens to be a serious and elegant wine!

Tripoz NV Crémant de Bourgogne Nature Prestige 1.5 L

Also made from 100% Chardonnay with zero dosage, this wine spends a full 27 months on the lees before disgorgement. The result is a broad and powerful wine with tropical fruit, green apple, pineapple stalk, orange peel, and a hint of spearmint and lime blossom on the nose. The palate is rich and lush with mango, mandarin orange, and a hint of spicy green walnut coming forward, balanced by a dense mineral core. In fact, it actually reminds me of some of my favorite Champagnes (but for half the price). Céline and Laurent don’t make much of this wine and we are thrilled to have it in magnum size! An elegant but no-fuss wine that should always have a place on your dinner table or at your New Year's Eve party, it would pair well with creamy poultry dishes, whole-roasted fish, or soft, tangy cheeses. Mongioia 2015 Moscato d'Asti "Belb"

In the Moscato d’Asti zone, farming is driven by volume over quality – almost all the wine made there is from industrial agriculture and industrial winemaking, which is why Moscato is usually cheap wine in every regard. The fruit for Belb comes from edenic hillside vineyards where chemicals have never been used. The winemaking matches the farming. The result is one in a million (think Moscato from Bera, the best possible alternate to Belb) – a focused wine, fresh and clean, with deep layers showing classic Moscato attributes like apricot and pear, delicate floral hints and nutty flavors. Belb is relatively low in residual sugar so it tastes fruity rather than cloying. We sell a lot of Belb to people looking for Barefoot or one of the other brands; despite the relatively high price they come back for more, converted. Jamie Wolff

Raventós I Blanc 2014 Conca del Riu Anoia de Nit Reserva Rosé

Pepe Raventos stepped outside of the Cava appellation in 2012 to create the Conca del Riu Anoia designation, which is committed to prioritizing the area's indigenous varieties, estate fruit, longer elevage, and biodynamic methods. The de Nit rosé was the first Conca wine and continues to sate and impress us with its lively aromas of pert pink lemonade, tart cranberry, and a hint of pepper; the palate is dry and elegant, with refreshing, bright acidity, flavors of strawberry seeds, musky ripe raspberries, and orange zests, flanking the complex saline and mineral core, stemming from Raventos' calcareous soils, rich with marine fossils. This is an incredibly versatile rose sparkling wine for aperitifs, charcuterie, fish and seafood of all kinds. Ariana Rolich

Julia Bernet 2012 Penedès Cava Ingenius Brut Nature

We are avid fans of Xavi Bernet and regular visitors to his cave in the tiny hamlet of El Pago, where he sells delicious Catalan cheese, fruits, and rancio, in addition to his totally fabulous organic Julia Bernet Cavas (Julia is Xavi's young daughter). Xavi farms his grandparents' vines and makes a tiny amount of sparkling and still wine, all of which display enormous quality and care. Ingenius is 80% Xarello and 20% Chardonnay, fermented in stainless steel, and aged on the lees for a minimum of 18 months before disgorgement with no dosage. A flinty, smoky minerality pervades the nose of sweet cream and lemon blossoms, which is almost Chablis-like in its force and depth, and continues on to infuse the savory palate. Broad but not weighty, with tingly acid and flavors of golden plum, fennel, and marigold. This is a complex Cava that vastly exceeds its price point. If Penedes were the object of such intense scrutiny and admiration as Champagne, there is no doubt that Xavi Bernet would be hailed as a grower of supreme talent and character. Ariana Rolich

Winemaker Toni Carbó  farms his family's vines organically and biodynamically in Penedes, the heart of Cava country - but don't expect Cava  from this bottle! Gentle bubbles, tart acidity, and refreshing spring water minerality accompanied by herbal berry seeds and a hint of floral berry fruit. A thirst-quenching aperitif and delightful pairing for baked fish, smoked salmon, seafood, and charcuterie. Ariana Rolich

100% Riesling, méthode traditionnelle, hand-riddled, aged on the lees for over two decades, and disgorged in September 2016 with zero dosage, this is a truly unique offering spanning two generations of the Lauer family. The nose gives notes of seashells, stone, beeswax, underripe starfruit, lanolin and sweet grass. On the palate the wine is incredibly vinous and savory, with vibrant acidity and a complex range of flavors - from lime zest, green apple skin, and greengage plum, to Seville orange peel, thyme, and orange blossom water. Made with grapes from a section of the Herrenberg, with more than 12 months spent on the lees in bottle, this Sekt is just asking to be popped for any occasion (A birthday! A Tuesday! Apéro!). Crisp and flinty, but also leesy on the nose, the palate is fresh and lively, with stone fruit, young ginger, fennel bulb, and a brisk minerality. Pair with a fried oyster po'boy or crab cakes! Jurtschitsch NV (b 13) Kamptal Brut Sekt Rosé

Weingut Jurtschitsch is the oldest winery (est. 16th century) in the Kamptal region of Austria and has been in the family since 1868. Vineyards were converted to organic farming in 2006 and all 60 hectares have been certified organic since 2009. The Brut Sekt Rosé is mostly Zweigelt with the balance made up of Pinot Noir and Sankt Laurent, from cooler vineyard sites with calcareous soils. The wine spends 2 1/2 years on the lees and receives 7 g/L dosage. Light, antique pink in the glass, the nose is fragrant with roses, blueberries, and raspberries. On the palate juicy red berries mingle with stony and salty minerality. Cari Bernard

Under the Wire 2013 Mendocino Alder Springs Rose Pinot Noir

Under the Wire is a joint project of Morgan Twain-Peterson (of Bedrock fame) and Chris Cottrell developed to explore the potential of sparkling wine in California based on a single vineyard from a single vintage. Alder Springs is is located in far northern Mendocino County just 12 miles from the Pacific Ocean; the steep hills, cool nights, and low-vigor soils lead to small yields  of intense flavorful berries.  Wtih a salmon-flesh robe, this sparkling rosé displays red cherry skin and orange peel aromatics, and further reveals ripe strawberry, ruby red grapefruit and blood orange flavors, accompanied by dried thyme and tarragon undertones and a fine, yet firm bead.
