REMINDER! Pink Hats: a Benefit for Planned Parenthood

Thanks to everyone who has helped to already make this effort a great success! There's another week to go; some new wines have arrived and have been added to the list, so please have a look again.

We are pleased to have gathered these wines as a group: they are all made by women. And it is, uncontroversially, still cold at least some of the time, and therefore suitable for continued wearing of our pink hats. For the rest of the month of March, we will donate 10% of each sale of these wines to Planned Parenthood.

Broadside 2015 Central Coast Chardonnay

Brian and Stephy Terrizzi's Broadside project focuses on sustainably farmed vineyards and minimalist winemaking (native yeasts, minimal handling, neutral oak), as well as purity of flavor and varietal expression.Their Central Coast Chardonnay is a quintessential example of their wine growing and winemaking philosophy; a bright and creamy Chardonnay with ripe lemon and peach flavors and a saline minerality. Broadside 2014 Paso Robles Cabernet Sauvignon

Fans of Broadside's delicious Margarita Vineyard Cabernet, take note! This 2013 Paso Robles bottling is one of the most graceful wines we've tasted in the under $20 price range, combining 50% Margarita fruit with two other sustainably farmed Paso Robles vineyards. It is substantial and refreshing, with full flavors of sweet purple plums, spicy citrus oil, brambly black and blue berry fruit, and balanced, grippy young tannins. A truly fantastic value! Corison, Cathy 2012 Napa Valley Kronos Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon

Cathy Corison's winery is located on their home vineyard, Kronos, in Napa Valley's Rutherford AVA. The Cabernet vines are planted on gravelly loam soils and are some of the oldest Cabernet Sauvignon vines in the valley. Black cherry, cassis, and black currant flavors resonate on the palate framed by a prominent tannic structure. A quintessential example of power intersecting with elegance, and a wine that will reward cellaring for the next 8-10 years. Jonas Mendoza

Kelley Fox 2014 Dundee Hills Red Barn Block Maresh Pinot Noir

The grapes for this inaugural (and very tiny) vintage come from parcels surrounding the legendary Maresh Red Barn and farmed by 90-year old owner Jim Maresh Sr. The blocks are own-rooted Pommard clones planted in 1978. This wine has all the brambly black fruit of the regular Maresh Vineyard bottling, but with additional power, elegance, and structure. Tasting a bottle with Kelley Fox in front of the Red Barn, the rugged tannins frame a dark core of black raspberry and cherry fruit; after several hours, the wine unfurls with flavors of blackberry, mushroom, and freshly rained earth. A truly special bottling indeed! Jonas Mendoza

Filipa Pato NV Bairrada Brut Rose "3B"

Bairrada, with its cooler maritime climate, has a long history of producing fresh and distinctive sparkling wines of quality from the native grapes of the region. Filipa Pato admirably keeps the tradition alive with her delicious and unpretentious brut rosé made from a blend of Bairrada’s signature noble red variety Baga and the tangy high acid white grape, Bical. Spicy and zesty with notes of bright citrus and red berries, this is a great (and affordable!) pairing for baked fish with paprika and Iberian olive oil or smoked fish brunch.

Familia Nin Ortiz 2015 Priorat Porrera Planetes de Nin Blanc

Ester Nin and Carles Ortiz combine rigorous biodynamic farming, prime terroir in Porrera (one of the two coolest villages in the Priorat), and an oddity - Cargnan Blanc - to achieve this eleagant outlier among Priorat whites. Unusually lithe, clear, and cool-tempered relative to the big, sometimes boozy whites of the region, with heady aromas of wild herbs, lemon balm, mustard flower, kefir lime, citrus peels, and white pepper. The palate is supple, long, and mineral, one of the most restrained and pretty Priorat whites to date, displaying delicate tropical and tree fruits with bitter piths, mineral earth, and sea salts. Pair with rich seafood and herbed poultry. Ariana Rolich

López de Heredia 2008 Rioja Viña Cubillo Crianza

A blend of 65% Tempranillo, 25% Garnacha and small amounts of Mazuelo and Graciano, with three years in barrel and extended bottle age prior to release, the very good 2008 vintage has yielded a classic and satisfying Cubillo. Ripe, forward aromas of black cherry, blueberry sap, and raspberry, with tarragon, sweet black licorice, leather, and peppery earth; the palate is initially quite juicy with blackberry flesh and skins, tart black plum, and tangy acidity, opening with air to reveal sour cherry, plum skins, subtle herbal and smoky flavors, and soft sweet leather. Sara i René Viticultor 2013 Priorat Partida Bellvisos Blanco

Lovers of white Rioja, Jurancon Sec, and Bordeaux Blanc will swoon over this unique (and uniquely delicious) white Priorat. Sara Perez and Rene Barbier Jr are the team behind the delicious and popular Venus La Universal wines from the Montsant. Both are Priorat natives  and, as children of the great Jose Luis Perez of Mas Martinet and Rene Barbier of Clos Mogador, heirs to winemaking history. It was very exciting to taste a pair of Priorats from their "Sara i Rene" label that illuminate the influence of amphora aging on Garnatxa-based wines, a practice enjoying a resurgence in the region. Exotic, rich, and wild, the Partida Bellvisos Blanco is 90% Garnatxa Blanca and 10% Trepat Blanc (only 2 hectare of which are known to exist in Spain), fermented in locally-made, unlined amphora and raised partly in 15 year old 600L foudre before being moved back to amphora to complete its elevage. Full, sultry fragrances of elderflower, butterscotch, chlorine, jasmine and sweet golden fruit perfume the creamy, nutty, oxidative palate of orange, tamarind, almond oil, and tangy apricot peel; a voluptuous wine, perforated by tensile tannins. Sara i René Viticultor 2014 Priorat Partida Pedrer Rosado

It is hard to overstate how awesome Sara Perez and Rene Barbier Jr. are at making rosé! We fell in love with their "clarete" for Venus La Universal, a blend of red and white grapes from the Montsant, co-fermented and aged in very old barrels. Now we have the pleasure of receiving their first rosé from the Priorat: Partida Pedrer Rosat. These are rosé wines to dine with and dream about, with ample depth and elegance to negate any concerns about 14% alcohol rosé. An unusual blend of Garnacha and Monastrell from a single vineyard, fermented for 6 months and aged in 10+ year-old barrels for  9 months. Aromas of watermelon, choke cherries, cinnamon, slate, and rose petals wash onto the palate of raspberry and dark, wild herbs, spicy rose, and soft, rosey cherry. Never has a big rose from a hot region tasted so long, mineral, and cooling. I would love this wine with a curried fish dish or hearty steamed clams with chorizo, chard, and pink peppercorns. Chandon de Briailles 2014 Corton Clos du Roi

From .38 HA biodynamically farmed vines averaging over 40 years old, high on the hillside of Corton. Traditionally the most powerful and stern of the stable of red Corton lieu-dits at Chandon de Briailles. 80% whole cluster fermentation. There’s a fair bit of reduction to this initially, but with a long decant this recedes to reveal aromas plummy black fruit, animale funk, black tea, and fresh-turned earth. In the mouth ripe red/black fruit flavors mingle with pungent minerality on the vibrant mid-weight palate. There is good sap and firm, but ripe tannins supporting the fruit on the long, substantial finish. This has real class and should be sensational after 10-15 years in the cellar. John McIlwain

Marnes Blanches (Geraud Fromont) 2015 Cotes du Jura Chardonnay Les Molates

From a parcel of 35-year-old Chardonnay vines planted in limestone-rich soils, the 2015 Les Molates is pure joy to drink. All of their ouillé wines are vinified the same way: direct press into neutral barrels of various sizes for both alcoholic and malolactic fermentation, and spend eighteen months on the lees before bottling with a touch of SO2. It opens with a luscious nose of orange zest, pineapple, juicy green apple, brown spice, honeysuckle, and butterscotch. Full-bodied but not flabby, it is saline and pure with a bright acidity. This is such a pretty wine, and was a standout at a recent lunch with fried Dungeness crab. Tim Gagnon

Clos du Joncuas 2012 Gigondas

Clos du Joncuas, founded in 1920 by Pierre Auguste Chastan, has always farmed with natural methods and has been officially organic since 1980. Currently run by sisters Dany and Carole Chastan, the estate's Gigondas vines are on slopes below the Dentelles de Montmirail on soils of clay with dolomite and gypsum over the limestone of the Dentelles and average 40 to 90 years old. 80% Grenache with Mourvedre, Cinsault and Syrah, whole cluster fermentation in vat with 12 months aging in large old barrels. The 2012 Gigondas is a bit lighter and brighter than the norm at Clos du Joncuas with high-toned black fruit, mineral, spice and licorice aromas. The palate is elegant and fresh showing deep supple black fruits with hints of graphite, garrigue and brown spice. After three days, recorked in the fridge, the wine has deepened impressively with pure blackberry, bitter chocolate and licorice aromas, great density on the palate with black fruit liqueur, red currant, earth and anise. A beautiful wine! Serve cool and decant many hours if drinking young, or cellar for five to fifteen years.

Clos du Joncuas 2015 Gigondas

80% Grenache with Mourvedre, Cinsault and Syrah, on Triassic clay/limestone soils always farmed organically. Whole cluster fermentation in vat with 12 months aging in large old barrels. Although we love this beautifully old-fashioned, organic wine in every vintage, Dany and Carole Chastan have made perhaps their best wine ever in 2015! The wine shows deep aromas of blackberry, dark chocolate, prune, garrigue, musk and citrus, quite focused and elegant. The palate is pure, supple and balanced, even at 15% alcohol, with dense blackberry, tart cherry, red currant, spice, earth and minerals, with tart red fruits, minerals and citrus in the very long finish. This is a superb Gigondas that can be enjoyed immensely now with a steak, pork or lamb chops, Morrocan tagines and full-flavored cheeses. Cellar 10 to 15 years for a mature experience. The wine shows very deep aromas of blackberry and floral strawberry compote, earth, citrus, violet and spice. The palate is supple and dense, brightened by floral notes and firm acidity, with ripe blackberry and raspberry fruit, framed in juicy acidity with a very long finish of ripe berry fruits and mineral flavors. Closel (Château des Vaults) 2015 Savennières Clos du Papillon

The 2015 Clos du Papillon has just arrived in NY - it promises to be a great vintage for this wonderful Savennières, certainly one of the top wines of the appellation. We will post a tasting note ASAP, meanwhile here is information from the domain's website:

"The Clos du papillon is a small valley at mid slope, beautifully exposed southwest to the light of the Loire. There are schist, rhyolite but also quartz. The topsoil layer is very shallow (60 cm) which provides excellent drainage for rainwater. The vine growing conditions are difficult, forcing it to develop its roots deep in the rock cracks to draw nutrients. The climate in that parcel allows for a level of highly advanced maturity. With grapes that concentrate aromas under the action of Botrytis. The Clos du papillon is harvested in two selections : The first selection during the « Fresh Fruit aroma » period and the second one later with some botrytis during the « cooked fruit, quince and smoked aromas » period. Both selections are put in barrels and assembled 16 months later. The wine then remains a few months in vats. This assemblage of the two styles of grapes results in a full bodied wine, with a citrus finish on very first attack, followed by sensations of ripe and exotic fruit with a very distinguished touch of bitterness or toasted almonds on the finish. The long aging on the lees gives it a nice smoothness. The « brandy » nose is characterized by aromas of evolution. The body and the very long finish make the Clos du Papillon a gastronomic wine to accompany lobster, scallops, smoked fish, Turbots, Saint Peter. It is also interesting with delicate white meats such as veal or capon, along with truffles or mushrooms. Classic mountain cheeses like old Salers, or 5 to 6 years old Comté are equally delicious with this great Savennières."

Closel 2015 Savennières Les Caillardières

The Domaine du Closel "Caillardières" is a demi-sec Savennières that we have enjoyed immensely in the past - we're glad to see it back in the US and we can't wait to try it!

"The grapes are harvested later ; the berries are golden, producing wines with aromas of baked apple, exotic fruits, raisins and toasted almonds. That terroir gives the wine a very silky texture, characteristic of these sandstone schist parcels. This wine is vinified and aged in barrels (French oak, 12 months) and reveals through natural micro-oxygenation this slightly bitter aftertaste that will give an interesting body to the wine. Rather smooth on the palate this wine has character. It pairs very well with artichokes or asparagus, other vegetables difficult to pair with wine. It is also popular with sweet and savory dishes such as veal stew with orange, monkfish with honey and cider vinegar, roasted pork with pineapple." - from the Domaine du Closel website.

Enfants Sauvages 2013 Cotes Catalanes Noces de Lumière

100% Mourvedre from a small parcel, aged for a year in 6 hl used Austrian barrels (Stockinger), then kept in bottle. This is the most elegant and finessed Mourvedre I've ever tasted. At 12%, it's not light, but it is really charming, with developed earthy flavors, yet free from any chewy tannins. Really quite velvet-like smoothness, and ample complexity, with a long mineral finish. Certainly wins the award for the most 'beautiful' of the Enfants Sauvages offerings. It's a joy to drink, and a great chance to study the oft-blended Mourvedre grape on it's own.  Eben Lillie

Jane et Sylvain 2014 Côte de Nuits Villages Queue de Hareng

The vines are in the lieu-dit "Queue de Hareng" below an old quarry at the top of the slope in Brochon, next to Fixin 1er Cru "la Perrière," on red/brown soils of mountain silt and limestone pebbles over the limestone bedrock. Always giving an earthy and mineral-infused wine, the 2014 is a bit more fruit-forward but is still primarily a Burgundy of terroir. There is reduction when first opened so please decant or open in advance. With aeration the wine shows subtle aromas of red currant, strawberry and tart cherry with violet, brown spice and earth - really quite complex and pretty. The palate is well-structured with chalky mineral flavors underlying the earthy  raspberry and strawberry fruit. The finish is long with firm acidity and mineral notes. This is a lovely and beautifully balanced Burgundy for those who enjoy minerals as much as fruit! Note: The wine improves dramatically  over 3 to 4 days, re-corked in the fridge, for those with enough patience - or cellar for five to fifteen years.

Jane et Sylvain 2014 Gevrey-Chambertin

From 45 to 60 year-old vines, certified organic, mostly in En Pallud (below 1er Cru les Corbeaux). The 2014 Gevrey shows a light red/black color, aromas of morello cherry, red currant and raspberry with hints of earth, stone, violets, black pepper and licorice. The palate is dense but light with cherry, red-currant, earth, citrus and mineral flavors with berry fruits and saline minerals lingering in the finish. Ripe but not a fruit-bomb - a red Burgundy of terroir that is delicious now, but should become a beautiful, old-fashioned wine when mature, best perhaps 2021 - 2030. On day two the wine has deepened with very sappy black and red fruits,  quite dense and earthy.  Lovely wine from living soils and quite a different style than modern Burgundies.  David Lillie

Jane et Sylvain 2014 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Fonteny

Jane et Sylvain have a superb, tiny parcel of Gevrey 1er Cru "Fonteny", high up in the southwest corner, separated from Grand Cru Ruchottes by a dirt track, certified organic. Four barrels of 2014 Fonteny were produced, of which one was new. Tasted last February the wine showed dense, deep strawberry and black chery fruit with round supple tannins and a very long firm, palate coating finish. Re-tasted in November 2016, the round strawberry fruit is framed in chalky minerals, quite dense and palate-coating, balanced with soft tannins - a very young wine that will be delightful to drink now but best to wait five to ten years for the velvety complexity to come, best perhaps 2021 to 2035. Bize, Simon 2014 Bourgogne Les Perrières

Bize 2014 Bourgogne Rouge Les Perrières from vines located above Pernand-Vegelesses planted in 1971 and 1974. Stony, dark fruited, hints of spice, damp earth, bright acidity, savory herb notes, appropriately mineral, good concentration. Still a bit circumspect initially, but maintains a nice balance of structural and fruity elements. Not exactly plush at the moment, but the frank earthiness is compelling. Very pretty after an hour of air. Decant now or hold for 2-5 years when things should blossom. There's plenty here for a Bourgogne and I like the energy and mineral character. John McIlwain

Bize 2014 Savigny les Beaune 1er Cru Grands Liards

From vines planted in 1939, 1950, 1979 in the limestone and red clays and gravels beneath les Lavières. The Aux Grands Liards is bit muted upon opening, but with 2 hours in the decanter lovely fruit and pungent soil aromas emerge. Aromatically the wine is perfumed and quite pretty with aromas of wild strawberry, red currant, black tea, and brambles. Fine strawberry and mineral flavors build on the mid-weight palate and carry over on an admirably long finish. This is a fine and satisfying Savigny-Les-Beaune and recommended for mid-term cellaring. Decant early or hold 3-5 years to allow elements to integrate.

Oltretorrente 2014 Timorasso Colli Tortonese

Timorasso is a golden-colored grape from Piedmont's Colli Tortonese. Aside from Gavi and Moscato, Piedmont is not well known for white wines, and Timorasso has a bit more richness and weight compared to most white wine grapes. There's a bit of spice and an almost nutty character that complements marmalade and orange fruit tones. This wine is very interesting to try as an example of an heirloom variety that almost went extinct, and it is extremely capable at the dinner table for anything from seafood, Middle Eastern food, or rich pastas. Oltretorrente 2014 Rosso Colli Tortonese (Barbera 90%, Dolcetto 10%)

This Rosso is 90% Barbera and 10% Dolcetto. We will drink some on Thanksgiving – we have a miscellaneous crowd of fellow-orphans, and they represent a wide range of taste and interest in wine, or lack thereof. I am not normally a fan of blends from Piedmont, so it’s surprising to me that I love this wine. There is still plenty of old vine Barbera character, but extra vivacity and complexity from the Dolcetto makes it really delicious and interesting. I anticipate it to be a crowd-pleaser, with enough intrigue for wine lovers, easy drinkability for the drinkers, and a very good pick to play well with the crazy range of Thanksgiving flavors. Oltretorrente 2012 Barbera Superiore Colli Tortonese

In 2010 Chiara and Michele were living in Milan with their two young children when they decided to buy a small organic farm in Paderna and start making wine. They have 3.5 hectares made up of 10 small parcels of 15 to 100-year-old vines. The vineyards face both north and south at an altitude of about 300 meters, with soils rich in limestone and clay. For the Barbera Superiore, the grapes are destemmed and fermented in cement tanks. Maceration on the skins lasts 40 days depending on the year, with malolactic fermentation taking place in barrels. The wine spends 18 months in barrels and a minimum of 6 months in bottle before it is released. The result is a Barbera with a complex nose of black cherries and cloves. On the palate you get ripe black plums, violets, sage and dark chocolate. This is a really unique and interesting Barbera, and one that I will certainly be drinking more of! Christine Manula

Eger, Jeannette 2015 Pfalz Goldberg Riesling

Jeannette Eger grew up in a family of winemakers, and in 2008, went out on her own with about four hectares of vines to work with. Two hectares of these vines sit on the hillside Goldberg vineyard, highest parcel in Herxheim am Berg, bordered by forest, with soils of loess, limestone, and sandstone. Her vineyards are certified organic and she uses some biodynamic treatments. Grapes are hand-harvested, ferment spontaneously, and age in stainless steel. This wine is bombastic: tropical and rich on the nose, zesty and powerful on the palate with great acidity, tropical pineapple, tart apricot, and bitter almond on the finish. Cari Bernard

Fricke, Eva 2015 Rheingau Lorcher Riesling

Eva Fricke's journey from child of doctors in Northern Germany to winemaker in the Rheingau with ten leased hectares (only seven currently in production) and going for organic certification for the 2016 vintage is quite the story. Eva has worked at wineries in South Africa, France, Italy, Spain, Germany, and Australia, and also holds a degree in Oenology from Geisenheim as well as a Masters in Business Management from Oestrich-Winkel. During her seven-year tenure working with Johannes Leitz, she slowly began to branch out into her own vineyard plots and winery, officially leaving Leitz in 2011. Her determination and dedication to quality is inspiring. During her tasting in the store this past February, she spoke excitedly about the importance of organic farming, and the positive influence it has on her vines, even in difficult vintages. By choosing to work the steep slopes organically in the Rheingau, she has taken on a challenge rarely even considered in the region. 2015 was a stellar vintage for Eva, and across the board her wines have pitch-perfect clarity and vibrant acidity. The Lorcher Riesling trocken has grapes from both Schlossberg and Kapellenberg vineyards, grown on slate with loess and quartzite. The wine is stony and salty on the nose, with notes of citrus zest and dark slate; focused yet still has a sense of fullness across the mid-palate, with flavors of tart white grapefruit, juicy apricot, and a firm mineral structure. This wine should open up nicely in three to five years. Cari Bernard

Gut Oggau 2015 Burgenland Emmeram

Eduard and Stephanie Tscheppe are making a 'family' of wines in Burgenland, Austria. Emmeram is 100% Gewurtztraminer grown biodynamically on a mix of limestone and sand. Grapes are hand harvested and ferment in large, used oak barrels. The élevage is also in used oak (500 L barrels), and like their other wines, there is no batonnage, no fining or filtration, and no added sulfur. This vintage of Emmeram finished fermenting with a touch of residual sugar, which lends a balance and textural richness to the piquant, young ginger and white pepper spice along with flavors of ripe pineapple and juicy pears. Vineyards were converted to organic farming in 2006 and all 60 hectares have been certified organic since 2009. The Brut Sekt Rosé is mostly Zweigelt with the balance made up of Pinot Noir and Sankt Laurent, from cooler vineyard sites with calcareous soils. The wine spends 2 1/2 years on the lees and receives 7 g/L dosage. Light, antique pink in the glass, the nose is fragrant with roses, blueberries, and raspberries. Von Racknitz 2011 Nahe Riesling Niederhäuser Klamm Spätlese

While I love dry German Riesling and am constantly evangelizing about its virtues, I still love wines with some sweetness more than most Germans and perhaps more than the proprietors of Von Racknitz themselves. That's most likely why this was the first wine I tasted at the estate that got three stars in my notebook (out of a max of three -- it's not a particularly precise system, I admit). As excited as I was by it, the note is somewhat brusque: "Very ripe aromas; concentrated peach and herbs. A lot of depth. Like the sun exploding in my mouth. So succulent. Exceptional!" The vines are over 60 years old, the wines are fermented spontaneously in stainless steel, the yields are absurdly low (30 hl/ha) and it's just an outright delicious, lip-smacking Spätlese. -jfr

Division 2015 Willamette Valley Chardonnay Un

Kate Norris and Tom Monroe of Division sourced this year's Chardonnay from a blend of several vineyards in the Willamette Valley including two biodynamic, dry-farmed sites (Cooper Mountain Hill and Johan Vineyards).  The wine expresses the warmth the 2015 vintage, with rich lemon curd, ripe peach, and tropical fruit flavors, woven through with lemony acidity. Poe 2015 Sonoma County Rose

To quote a wise colleague, upon tasting the 2015 rosé from Poe: "Woah! I was not expecting that..." Winemaker Samantha Sheehan blends Pinot Noir from dry-farmed Olcese vineyard, planted in 1974, and Pinot Meunier from organically farmed Van der Kamp vineyard on Sonoma Mountain, which was planted in the early 1950s, fermented in stainless steel with no malolactic fermentation. It delivers a bright bolt of taut, vivid herbal red berries and bristling acidity, with a covert hint of pent-up CO2 and elegant, dusty mineral earth. A mouth-watering aperitif and seriously invigorating pairing for tartares, late-summer tomato recipes like homemade gazpacho, and crunchy peppers fresh from the grill. Ariana Rolich

Espelt 2015 Empordà Garnatxa Blanca

The Espelt family has been growing grapes for centuries on the sandy granite, limestone, and slate soils of Empordà. In the early 2000s, they began bottling under their own name, resulting in some of the best values coming out of Catalonia. Espelt's vineyards are certified organic and dedicated primarily to native varieties like Lledoner (Catalonian Grenache) and Carinyena. This wine is 100% Garnatxa Blanca from 50 year-old vines, fermented and aged for 3 months in neutral French oak barrels. Medium bodied, with pure, fluid flavors of white peach, lemon-lime, and golden apple, flecked with white pepper and silky  florals, anchored by a  firm mineral spine. Fresh and versatile. Herencia Altès 2014 Terra Alta Garnatxa Blanca

One of our best-selling Spanish whites, Herencia's Altes' Garnatxa Blanca comes from old vines planted on the sandy local "Panal" soils over limestone in Catalonia's Terra Alta region. A few hours of maceration on the skins, followed by 2 months on the lees provide texture and depth in this medium-bodied, dry yet juicy crowd-pleaser. White pepper, minerals, and green apple aromas precede mouthwatering flavors of crisp peach, lemon blossom, apricot, and hints of jasmine tea. A refreshing and versatile steal! Ariana Rolich

Matías i Torres 2015 La Palma Tinto Negramoll

La Palma native Victoria Torres makes this lively, taut, minerally red wine with her family's large Roman press of Canarian pine that dates back to the 1800s. Her Negramoll vines come from a variety of vineyards, both in the fertile north of La Palma island at very high altitudes (up to 1400 meters), as well as in the warmer, lower southern zones, which combine for an alluring, layered fruit profile. Victoria vinifies each parcel separately and blends them with precision. Mysterious aromas of bitter ashen soil and funky fruit skin, familiar to lovers of volcanic wine regions; dusty black cherry, damson plum, roses, and lots of volcanic earth and salty minerals drive the light/medium palate. In the Canary Islands, light and medium bodied reds are frequently consumed alongside the local cuisine of fresh fish, herb pestos, and flavorful heirloom potatoes. To summon the Canary spirit, pair this wine with a whole roasted fish from Blue Moon, drizzled with a traditional "mojo" of cilantro, green bell pepper, garlic, cumin, red wine vinegar, and olive oil. Venus La Universal 2014 Montsant Dido La Solucio Rosa

Priorat natives Sara Perez and Rene Barbier Jr. balance freshness with great complexity in all of their wines for Venus La Universal, which are made from Montsant fruit. Upon first sip of the inaugural vintage of "La Solucio" rose, we were hooked! Now the 2014 vintage has arrived, a blend of red and white grapes -- Garnacha, Carignan, and Syrah, plus Macabeu, Garnacha Blanca, and Garnacha Gris -- pressed all together, co-fermented, and aged for approximately 10 months in very old barrels before bottling. Pale, twinkling, rosy copper in the glass, with peach, orange peel, musk melon, blood orange, and peppercorn aromas; texturally stimulating, with tender tannins and lots of length, supporting sultry apricot, just-ripening wild berries, bitter citrus rinds, creamy florals, and lingering, salty, mineral and earth tone. It will only get better with some age, so don't be afraid to stock up. Ariana Rolich

Chandon de Briailles 2014 Corton Grand Cru Blanc

Comprised of fruit from Bressandes (2/3) which per Claude de Nicolay lends richness and Chaumes, located beneath Les Pougets (1/3) which lends a degree of “saltiness.” The 2014 Corton Blanc shows a lovely balance between power and elegance. Aromatically it shows yellow flowers, orange peel and hints of sea spray and wet stone. The palate displays pretty flavors of stone fruit, Meyer lemon, and apple overlying an overt, if not overwhelming minerality on a medium weight (for Corton) palate. This shows plenty of energy and drive, if not mass, on a long, detailed, and mouthwatering finish. John McIlwain

Chandon de Briailles 2014 Savigny-les-Beaune 1er Cru Les Lavières

After serious devastation by hail in 2013 when Les Lavières was not bottled (but made into something akin to a vin doux naturel, which has yet to be bottled) 2014 produced a lovely, if substantially reduced crop from the cru. 20% whole cluster fermentation with no chaptalization and bottled at 12.3% abv. The 2014 Les Lavières is pretty and detailed, rather than powerful. The aromas are cool-toned and red-fruited, with hints of strawberry and wild cherry. The racy, supple palate has flavors of red raspberry, cherry, and pomegranate supported by fine, ripe tannins and bright acidity. And while this is no heavyweight, the purity of the fruit and the lively energy makes this a pleasure to taste and the structure certainly bodes well for mid-term ageability for this agréable à boire Burgundy. Chandon de Briailles 2014 Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru Ile des Vergelesses

While the jewel of the premier crus of Pernand-Vergelesses, like Les Lavières, the Ile de Vergelesses vineyard suffered substantially from the hail of 2013. Another in a series of what Claude de Nicolay refers to as “virtual vintages” only half the normal crop was harvested in the 2014 vintage. In light of the vintage character, fermentation was 40% whole cluster with a somewhat shorter elevage to emphasize the beautifully pure fruit. Here the nose shows a blend of black fruits, wood smoke, baking spices, and faint hints of anise. The mid-weight palate features blackberry, cassis, and blood orange flavors giving way to a pungent, nearly saline minerality, which carries thru on the persistent, sapid finish. This has impeccable balance, if not the power of more blockbuster vintages. This is attractive and has plenty of drive and detail to frame the pure, pretty fruit. John McIlwain

Marnes Blanches (Geraud Fromont) 2008 Cotes du Jura Vin Jaune

2008 marks the first vintage of Vin Jaune ever produced by Domaine des Marnes Blanches. In short, it is beautiful. The nose is lively, almost ethereal, with aromas of toasted cashew, burnt orange rind, eastern spice, pine, and mango skin. Texturally speaking, it is one of the most interesting Vin Jaunes that I have tasted; it offers exquisite fruit with a touch of smoke on the palate and is lithe, intense, incredibly long, and elegant. Lovers of Vin Jaune, look no further: this is the wine for you. Tim Gagnon

Marnes Blanches (Geraud Fromont) 2012 Cotes du Jura Savagnin Empreinte

For their sous voile wines, Geraud and Pauline Fromont have a separate, three-story cellar that creates an environment conducive to healthy layers of flor. It is dark and humid, with no temperature control, and different levels of humidity on each level influencing the wines in barrel differently. They put the wines in barrel (which are never sulfured) on hot days to assure that the flor develops quickly and they will not be moved again until after a minimum of three years. The Savagnin vines for this cuvée are 45 years old. Much like the 2011, the 2012 Savagnin is classic and precise with an emphasis on balance and freshness. Tropical fruits abound with fenugreek, curry powder, honey-baked walnuts, and saline pears. The palate is sharp and focused with a tangy saltiness and fresh fruit with nuts followed by dried flowers rushing forward on the finish. It is an impressively crafted wine that opens up beautifully at the table and would be perfect with a main course of veal or roasted chicken and also the Comté that will follow! Tim Gagnon

Marnes Blanches (Geraud Fromont) 2015 Cotes du Jura Chardonnay Vielles Vignes

Chardonnay sourced from a single parcel of old vines (the same parcel of vines is used to make the Crémant Reserve) in Ste-Agnès planted in white marl. A bit more delicate on the nose than Les Molates, it shows captivating aromas of tropical fruit and a hint of sea breeze. The palate possesses incredible depth and power; more mineral than fruit-forward at first. With time open on the table, it is firing on all cylinders with enticing flavors of lychee, white peach, jasmine, and salty pineapple stalk. Absolutely decant if drinking now, and this will also reward with time in the cellar. Tim Gagnon

Marnes Blanches (Geraud Fromont) 2015 Cotes du Jura Savagnin En Jensillard

Made from an interesting local strain called Savagnin Muscaté, this is a wine unlike any other Savagnin I’ve had. The vines that provide the fruit for this cuvée are between 57 and 60 years old. Heady and floral on the nose with hints of ripe apricot, and a touch of spice, this almost could be mistaken for an Alsatian wine if it weren’t for Savagnin’s distinctive tropical fruit aromas. Compared to the 2014, it is incredibly broad and pretty on the palate with touch of white pepper and brown spice. Long, floral, and supple, this is a beguiling wine that deserves your attention. Marnes Blanches (Geraud Fromont) NV Cotes du Jura Cremant

Made from 100% Chardonnay grown in the same vineyard as Les Molates and fermented entirely in stainless steel before spending twelve to sixteen months on lees, this is a serious first foray into the sparkling wines from Domaine des Marnes Blanches. All of the base wine is from the 2014 vintage and this is the first year that this has been released without dosage. The nose is bright with honeysuckle, mango, and lime flower. On the palate it has a fine mousse with an almost toothsome texture; it is bone dry with hints of marmalade, exotic fruit, and a fresh, zesty acidity. This is simply the perfect apéritif. Tim Gagnon

Clos du Joncuas 2015 Gigondas Rosé

This is a big, beautiful, full-bodied rosé from Dany and Carole Chastan, made from Grenache, Cinsault and Syrah, always farmed organically. Lovely deep pink color, very pretty aromas of strawberry, red currant, peach, blood orange and stone. The palate is elegant and complex with creamy tart cherry and red currant fruit with citrus and floral notes and a long refreshing mineral finish. This is a superb, well-structured rosé that will drink beautifully over the next three years - serve with grilled tuna, chicken, grilled pork, salade Niçoise, mild cheeses. Highly recommended! DL

Clos du Joncuas 2015 Séguret La Garancière

(70% Grenache, with Carignan, Syrah and Mourvèdre, always farmed organically, hand harvested, whole-cluster wild yeast fermentation, aged in cement vat, un-fined, unfiltered.) The 2015 Seguret shows a very dark red/black color, with aromas of ripe cherry and strawberry liqueur, prune, earth, stone and provençal spices. The palate is quite dense and supple with black berry, prune and earth backed with firm citrusy acids, very saline and long in the finish. This is a big, solid wine that will accompany steaks, chops and burgers, a daube niçoise and full flavored cheeses. It's a fabulous value and will benefit from decanting well in  advance or a few years in the cellar. DL

Morantin, Noella 2012 Touraine Les Pichiaux Sauvignon Blanc

"Les Pichiaux" is a single vineyard plot of Sauvignon Blanc, with clay and limestone soils and vines around 35 years old. The grapes are direct pressed and élevage is on the lees in large, used barrels. Bright on the nose with notes of grapefruit and honeyed orange zest, the palate is juicy, fruity and not grassy! Think salty lemonade, ruby red grapefruit zest, fresh tropical acidity, and a stony minerality. Cari Bernard

Petit Domaine de Gimios 2015 Vin de Table Muscat Sec des Roumanis

Anne-Marie Lavaysse farms this tiny estate in the Minervois in Biodynamie (certified Demeter) and uses no copper sulfate in the vines and no sulfur-dioxide in vinification. This is a wild and beautiful wine made from Muscat planted on a high plateau with rich limestone soils. Intoxicatingly pretty on the nose with bold floral notes mingling with musky tropical melon, waxy citrus peel, and salty pineapple stalk. Beautifully textured, citrus, white pepper, green herbs, and luscious mango linger on the tongue with ample acidity for balance. This would be the perfect aperitif, or would be great with rich, spicy fish dishes. Tim Gagnon

Bera 2015 Moscato d'Asti Canelli

We sell this Moscato d'Asti because it's one of the best we've ever tasted – a wine with finesse and complexity; layers of apricot, peach, honey, balanced by clean lime-like acidity. Most of the competition is dull and insipid by comparison. The fact that this organic wine is made by some of the nicest people you can imagine has nothing to do with our selecting it for your delectation...

Adalia 2015 Valpolicella Classico Laute

For those who love old school Valpolicella, it can a be a bit difficult to find wines of the character Hemingway described as: "dry, red and cordial, like the home of a brother one gets on with." Moderate in alcohol and combining fresh cherry fruit, bright acidity, and a pleasing hint of bitterness on the finish it's especially useful at the table, pairing beautifully with lighter fare. Unfortunately, many examples trade freshness for richness to accommodate modern tastes for heavier, more extracted wines. Fortunately, organic grower Adalia in Mezzane di Sotto makes lovely old-fashioned Valpolicella. The 2015 has black cherry, crushed herbs, with a hint of anise on the nose. The light-bodied, racy palate offers delicious cherry, black tea, red berry flavors with a flush of cherry pit on the finish. With a light chill this gulpable red is superb paired with saltimbocca, mushroom risotto, or Piave cheese. John McIlwain

Adalia 2014 Valpolicella Ripasso Superiore "Balt"

In the early 1980s, Marinella quit her job as an accountant and moved to the family's five hectare farm 13 kilometers northeast of Verona. She’s the first in her family to make wine and learned primarily by doing -- reading books, tasting lots of wine and experimenting. Now she and her partner Hector farm 40 hectares, 20 of which are vineyards. Marinella has always farmed organically and has long worked biodynamically. Ripasso (given its own DOC in 2007) is a blend of Corvina, Mollinara, and Rondinella; and is kind of the half-way point between Valpolicella and Amarone. After pressing the dried grapes that make Amarone, the extra skins are used for the second fermentation of Valpolicella. Adalia's Ripasso is a beautifully complex wine, ripe with blackberries and hints of dried oregano, mint, liquorice, tobacco leaves and peat. Christine Manula

Occhipinti 2015 IGT Sicilia SP 68 Rosso

Arianna Occhipinti turns the usual  Cerasuolo di Vittoria ratio on it's head with her everyday Rosso, opting for  70% Frappato and only 30% Nero d'Avola.  Inverting the traditional blend in favor of the lighter Frappato grape gives a unique freshness and lift, while 10-15 days of maceration on the skins  ground the high-toned elegance with a subtle counterpoint of satisfying tannic grip. Fermentation is with indigenous yeast, followed by six months in concrete vats before bottling unfiltered. A pure, floral nose leads to bright red berry fruit on the palate with grace notes of hallmark Sicilian earthiness and spice. Karina Mackow

Vino di Anna 2015 Bianco Sicilia (Etna)

Anna (Australian) and Eric (French) starting making wine together back in 2008, and now own six hectares on Etna’s north face which they farm organically. Although they could be considered “outsiders”, they have a deep appreciation for preserving the land and traditional Sicilian wine making practices. They have restored a Palmento on their property and they are also working diligently to revive and replant vineyards that have been abandoned or neglected in some of the highest elevations of Etna Park, not an easy task. Their Bianco is made from a field blend of 60% Grecanico, 30% Carricante, 5% Malvasia (from the island of Salina) and other Indigenous white grape varieties.

Vino di Anna 2015 Vino da Tavola Palmento (Etna)

A luminous, almost ethereal blend of indigenous Sicilian varieties from the volcanic slopes of Mount Etna.  Palmento is the term for the traditional wine cellars of the region, with stone troughs for crushing grapes by foot. Winemakers Anna Martens and Eric Narioo honor the old methods with a blend of organically farmed Nerello Mascalese, Nerello Cappuccio, and Alicante as well as the native white grapes of the island Minella, Catarratto, and Insolia. Everything is crushed by foot from old bush vines with no fining or filtration and minimal sulfur at bottling. The result is a rush of pure, vibrant fruit as soon as you pop the cork: raspberries, cranberries, hints of juicy meyer lemon tumble into a bracing snap of acidity. A whiff of tannin reminds you (just barely) that this is still a red wine. It is also a fabulous solution to the "red wine with fish?" conundrum, especially with bolder, oily fish like mackerel or sardines. Grill up a few to enjoy with a baguette and a simple salad alongside a lightly chilled bottle the next time you're stumped for a seafood  pairing with red-only drinkers, and raise a toast to Captain Alex! Fricke, Eva 2015 Rheingau Lorcher Riesling Wisperwind

The Wisperwind cuvée is named after the cooling wind that results from a high pressure system moving through the Wisper Valley near the town of Lorch. The wine spends six months on the lees in stainless steel. Technically a feinherb, or off-dry Riesling, the residual sugar is just (wait for it) a whisper on the palate. Orange blossoms and rich, heady orange oil on the nose, the wine has wonderful balance and medium weight, with the lift of fresh orange and grapefruit zest, greengage plum, and malic notes of apple skin. Drinking very well right now, apologies we don't have more to offer! Cari Bernard

Harm 2015 Wachau Grüner Veltliner Fio

Maria and Andreas Harm have around ten hectares spread between Kremstal and Wachau, with their 500-year-old cellar located on the Kremstal side. Andreas had been an organic viticulture consultant to other estates across Austria and was vineyard manager for his family estate when he and Maria were offered the chance to lease some choice vineyard parcels on Kellerberg and Hollerin in 2010. This was their chance to branch out into their own projects, the cellar came later in 2014. A contrast to the neighboring plots in the region, the Harm vineyards are home to a bevy of plants, animals, and insects thriving together. The 'FIO' stands for four-in-one: Grüner Veltliner from vines aging 10-30 years, from four different vineyards. The wine is fermented and aged in stainless steel, with lees contact until bottling. Rich and spicy young ginger takes the forefront, with juicy apple and pear, white flowers and lemon zest. A sprightly Grüner to pair with crisp snap pea salads, steamed artichokes, fresh soft cheeses, grilled flaky fish. Cari Bernard
