The gang minus Frank John (arrives Wednesday, 6/7).

Bubbly New Arrivals from Germany & Austria

More sparkling wines from Germany and Austria? Absolutely. We can think of few better things to open for any sort of occasion. Not sure what gift to give? Not sure what the food will be at the dinner party you're heading to? Not sure if you're leaving the house at all? A bottle of bubbles is the answer.

Matthias Hager and Claus Preisinger return to the spotlight (more info here), this time with pét-nats that boast an incredible sophistication and poise not always found with this style of sparkler. Pétillant naturel wines are sparkling wines made when the initial fermentation finishes in the bottle under closure, causing the CO2 to remain in solution. The stylistic range of pét-nats is part of their charm: from the funky to the elegant, sometimes barely frizzante, sometimes with a creamy, aggressive mousse, akin to Champagne.

Ulli Stein's 2011 Riesling Sekt 'Ohne' is made in the traditional method, where a second fermentation is spurred in the bottle. As with his still 'Ohne' wines, there is no added sulfur or dosage, nor is there any filtration of the wines. Franz Strohmeier's Schilcher Frizzante is a perennial favorite at the shop; this year the Blauer Wildbacher-based sparkler is far more citrusy and stone-fruity than past vintages. The Schwartzriesling Brut Zero from Andi Knauss in Württemberg is a definite stand-out: no sulfur added, no dosage, traditional method Pinot Meunier from Germany (also available in magnum). The Riesling Sekt Brut from Frank John in the Pfalz spends 41 months on the lees, and is perhaps one of the most Champagne-esque of the bunch, creamy and layered and vinous. Happy drinking! Frank John 2011 Pfalz Riesling Sekt Brut

Weingut Frank John has been biodynamic since their first vintage in 2003, Demeter certified since the 2012 vintage, with a commitment to hand-harvesting, natural yeast fermentation, ageing in wood, and minimal sulfur additions. An incredibly elegant and layered Riesling Brut Sekt, with 41 months spent on the lees and close to 8 grams per liter of dosage. White and red grapefruit, star fruit and burnished peach on the nose, the wine is oxidative and broad, with a creamy mousse and aggressive attack. Powerful and vinous, with rich notes of apple, citrus oils and pith, a show-stopping sparkling wine. Cari Bernard

Hager, Matthias 2016 Kamptal Grüner Veltliner Pet Net

100% Grüner Veltliner, from vines around 40 years in age, grown on a mix of loess and clay soils. Spontaneous fermentation begins in a mix of used oak barrels and stainless steel tanks. Apple blossom and green apples on the nose, this pét-nat boasts a powerful and creamy mousse with notes of lemon zest, white raspberries, peach skin, with just a whisper of residual sugar, and a layered, long finish. Knauss 2014 Strümpfelbach Schwarzriesling Brut Zero

Sparkling Pinot Meunier (aka Schwarzriesling), zero dosage, zero sulfur added...what else is there to say? The nose is delicate, with some subtle brioche aromas. On the palate, there's red fruit, lovely mousse, and a richness and textural complexity that leave quite an impression. It's rare enough to find 100% Pinot Meunier Champagnes (I have always been a big fan of Laherte and Bereche's offerings, for example), so we're very happy to have this delicious rendition from Andi Knauss. Champagne or not, it's a great wine and comes highly recommended.  Eben Lillie

Preisinger, Claus 2016 Burgenland Sankt Laurent Pet Nat

Claus Preisinger has managed to delight us again! Light peach in the glass, this méthode ancestral (read: pét-nat) sparkler is 100% Sankt Laurent, picked early to preserve acidity. Aromatic and fresh, notes of white flowers and green strawberries give way to a lively mousse with vibrant flavors of tart peach yogurt, wild strawberries, and rose petals. Cari Bernard

Stein 2011 Mosel Sekt 'Ohne'

Upon visiting Ulli Stein's cellar, I was impressed with the sheer number of projects he has chosen to undertake: he produces a full range of Riesling from sparkling to still, dry to sweet. He also experiments with varieties rarely seen in the region (I'm pretty sure we walked by a row or two of Sangiovese), grows several different clonal selections, and has a cellar filled with different-sized tanks and barrels: variety is key. During the visit, Ulli would walk from barrel to barrel piping samples, and would give the backstory for his inspiration for certain projects (often times born from late night conversations with friends). 'Ohne' means 'without', a title Ulli reserves for his wines made without adding sulfur, dosage, or filtering agents. The Sekt is 100% Riesling, savory, stony, austere and herbal, with oxidative notes of yellow apple and pear to round out the finish. Cari Bernard

Strohmeier NV Steiermark Schilcher Frizzante

Blauer Wildbacher is an indigenous grape of the Steiermark region of Austria. Naturally high in acid, the grape lends itself well to sparkling wines. Franz has 3.5 hectares of Blauer Wildbacher, farmed organically (with biodynamic treatments). The grapes are hand-harvested and ferment in stainless steel, followed by a second fermentation in the bottle. Antique rose gold with just a blush of dusty peach in the glass. Ruby red grapefruit and a touch of volatile acidity on the nose, the wine has less overt berry fruit this vintage, skewing more towards red plum, nectarine, apricot, grapefruit, cranberry and a tartness that reminds one of kombucha.
