2015s From Domaine Bart in Marsannay: Great Quality, Tiny Quantity - plus 2014 Burgundy Close-outs!

Our first 2015 red Burgundies have arrived, from the affable Martin Bart and his nephew Pierre in Marsannay. While the quality is superb, from this highly anticipated vintage, our allocation was tiny, only 10 cases of the Au Champ Salomon and 4 cases of the very pretty Saint Jacques, in addition to the very satisfying Bourgogne Rouge. "Usually we destem," says Pierre Bart, "but depending on the vintage and the cuvée we add a bit of whole bunches. We use cool maceration, 8°C–12°C during one week. Then we just let the temperature in the tank rise to 18°C, the starting point for the fermentation. We use natural yeast and we do pumping over and pigeage. Very traditional." Au Champ Salomon, in mid-slope on the Couchey side, is one of the finest vineyards in Marsannay always giving a dense and elegant wine and apparently soon to receive Premier Cru status. The 2015 Bart is a lovely wine, and while it can be enjoyed young, peak drinking should be 2020 to 2030. Saint Jacques, a cooler spot with thinner soils at the top of the slope near Couchey, gives a lighter, more floral wine that is particularly pretty in this ripe vintage. It's delicious now and will drink well over the next ten years. The estate's 2015 Bourgogne Pinot Noir is a very satisfying glass of red Burgundy, and will drink well over the next five years. Don't delay!

Jane et Sylvain No Mercedes in the drive, no grand Château, no fancy tasting room, just two lovely hard-working people who farm organically and make delicious wines. They have a great parcel in Gevrey "Fontenys," and a lovely Côte de Nuits vineyard next to Fixin "Queue de Hareng." Their 2015 Bourgogne Rouge and Bourgone Passetoutgrain have just arrived, showing the excellent ripeness of the vintage while retaining a bright, mineral quality that makes them ideal, refreshing reds for summer drinking - and they are sensational values!

A few Burgundy Bargains: As the 2015s are arriving later this month from Domaine Lafouge in Auxey-Duresses and Domaine Stéphane Magnien in Morey-Saint-Denis, we are offering a few cases of their 2014s at reduced prices. These are superb, perfectly balanced wines that are lovely now and will cellar nicely for ten to fifteen years.

Bart 2015 Bourgogne Pinot Noir

The Bourgogne Pinot Noir from Pierre and Martin Bart is particularly pretty in this excellent vintage, and is nicely balanced despite the higher ripeness of 2015. The wine shows aromas of morello cherry, raspberry and forest floor with hints of citrus and spice. The palate is lush and dense but quite bright with citrusy acids beneath ripe berry fruits with earth and spice flavors. Nice chalky earth and berry fruits continue in the finish. This is a lovely everyday Burgundy to enjoy slightly chilled - please decant or open an hour or two in advance.

Bart 2015 Marsannay Au Champ Salomon

When it comes to Marsannay, Domaine Bart's selection of crus is an embarrassment of riches. Au Champ Salomon, one of their best, is located in a prime spot on the mid-slope, producing wines which marry power with elegance and longevity. The grapes from 35-year-old plus vines are hand harvested, fermented with native yeasts, aged for 18 months in barrel, of which approximately 30% are new. The 2015 Champ Salomon shows its relation to Gevrey-Chambertin next door with aromas of ripe black cherry and strawberry with earth and spice. The palate is dense and rich, with ripe cherry and blackberry fruit over earthy, mineral-laden acidity. This young Burgundy will accompany a steak or grilled pork, served cool, best held for three to five years for a mature experience...

Jane et Sylvain 2015 Bourgogne Rouge

Jane et Sylvain: A refreshingly unpretentious name for a small organic estate in Gevrey-Chambertin. Their Bourgogne Rouge is from young vines in a parcel that has never been chemically treated and always tended organically. The 2015 Bourgogne Rouge shows a brilliant red/black color with lovely tart cherry, raspberry and violet aromas, very high-toned and bright. The palate shows the ripeness of 2015 with pretty strawberry and cherry fruit backed by firm acidity, and it finishes with refreshing citrus and red fruits. Serve this lovely Pinot Noir quite cool over the next five years - it's a delicious wine and a great value!

Jane et Sylvain 2015 Bourgogne Passetoutgrain

Jane and Sylvain have done it again! Another beautiful Passetoutgrain from 90% Pinot Noir and 10% Gamay, grown near Gevrey-Chambertin, organically farmed and quite delicious! The 2015 shows ripe aromas of tart cherry and raspberry liqueur with earth and violets. The palate is lively and bright with morello cherry and raspberry with stone, tobacco and citrus, quite vibrant and long. Really a refreshing and delicious wine, perfect for picnics and barbecues, served quite cool. This is a fantastic value and highly recommended.

Lafouge 2014 Auxey-Duresses Rouge

This is one of our favorite, if somewhat unknown, estates in Burgundy. Jean Lafouge and his son Gilles make classic, balanced, beautiful Burgundies at affordable prices and their village level Auxey-Duresses is always lovely and a great value. The 2014 is slightly riper than usual with lovely aromas of strawberry and tart cherry, with violet, rose, citrus and spice. Medium-bodied, with citrusy red fruits on the palate with great balance and refreshing acidity, the wine shows hints of earth and mineral that will develop nicely with time. Lovely now, especially if decanted well in advance, and a great pairing with poultry, white meats and mild cheeses. This has the weight and structure to cellar well, best perhaps in 5 to 8 years.  David Lillie

Magnien, Stephane 2014 Bourgogne Passetoutgrain Cuvée Densité (Arrives 6/6)

This is a great Bourgogne Passetoutgrain from the young and very capable Stephane Magnien, whose great vineyard work and un-forced vinifications are producing superb, elegant Burgundies. The 2014 Cuvée Densité is from older vines of Pinot Noir and Gamay and gets a longer élevage than his "regular" Passetoutgrain. The palate is round and elegant with cherry and strawberry compote and earthy flavors  but it's well-structured and refreshing with nice finishing acidity—really a lovely everyday Burgundy at a great price! Serve cool and enjoy. Decant for best drinking or open the day before as this "serious" Passetoutgrain will benefit from aging....

Magnien, Stephane 2014 Morey-Saint-Denis

The young and very talented Stephane Magnien is producing delicious, old fashioned Burgundies from his beautifully tended vineyards in and around Morey-Saint-Denis. The estate has never used herbicides and uses a plowing regimen designed to force the roots deeper into the limestone bedrock. The "village" wine is always one of my favorite recommendations in Burgundy due to its elegance, balance, lovely fruit and great value. The 2014 is particularly beautiful, with lovely aromas of strawberry liqueur, black raspberry, violet, blood orange - very floral with hints of earth, brown spice and oak. Great balance of firm acidity and ripe fruit with a touch of oak on the palate showing strawberry, blackberry, citrus and spice over a core of mineral flavors that linger in the long finish. This delicious young Burgundy is lovely to drink now but has all the elements for great medium-term aging - wait a few years then drink until 2030...

Magnien, Stephane 2014 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Sentiers

This a wonderful expression of Les Sentiers, aromatically expressive and layered. There are bright aromas of black cherry, raspberry, violets, woody herbs, and game on the nose. The mid-weight palate initially shows brambly black fruits, and pungent soil flavors. With time in the glass notes of dark cherry and cherry pit appear along with a savory ferrous minerality and spice notes. The tension between fruit and earthiness is compelling and will gain in complexity with time in the cellar. More expressive on the second day. If enjoying now, decant for several hours or revisit in 7-10 years and enjoy for the decade following.  John McIlwain

Bart 2015 Marsannay Les Saints-Jacques

Martin Bart, now joined by nephew Pierre, makes lovely Marsannay from many different single vineyards.  The Marsannay "Les Saints-Jacques" comes from vines at the top of the slope near Couchey on thin stony soils. Perfumed black brambly raspberry and cherry aromas are immediately followed by sapid Bing cherry and earthy flavors framed by fine tannins and lengthy spicy finish of whole clove and nutmeg. A Marsannay with understated elegance and considerable length. Jonas Mendoza
