We've purchased a very nice parcel of older Chateau La Nerthe, one of the great estates of Chateauneuf du Pape. The Cuvee Cadettes is from vines that are (were) over 80 years old. In 1988 it was 59% Grenache, 11% Mourvedre, and 30 % Syrah; the classic Chateauneuf has some Cinsault and a little Counoise in the blend. Old Rhone wine is not something we see (or get to taste) often so we are happy that the wines (which come from a good cellar) are in very good shape – fully mature, but still fresh, and with a lot of complexity. And, we think, temptingly priced! Jamie Wolff
A perfectly mature Chateauneuf for immediate enjoyment, no further age recommended, yet not over the hill - what a treat! Aromas of soft leather, rose bush, black tea, and sweet spice; the palate is open and elegant, light-on-its-feet at 13.9%, with supple tannins and bright acidity, generous flavors of dried cherry and dried blackberry, figs, herbes de Provence, and warm earth. Ready to pair with grilled or braised meats this Father's Day! Ariana Rolich
From 80+year-old vines (as of 1988), 60% Grenache, 30% Mourvèdre, 10% Syrah, aged in a combination of new and used barrels. The 1988 Cuvée des Cadettes has aged into a lovely expression of mature Châteauneuf. The nose is an intriguing melange of strawberry fruit, animale aromas, and garrigue with hints of baking spices and anise. The palate has softened to a velvety texture with supple tannins and a fine combination of resolved black fruits, game, and mineral flavors on a long, plush finish. Lovely! John McIlwain
