Clos du Rouge Gorge, young vines, in the Roussilon

A Connoisseur's Cellar, Part 10 of 8: some fine bits towards the end

We might get another round, but after today there will be a break for at least a little while from this relentless assault of interesting wines. Meanwhile, lots more cool wine!

An Important Note:

These wines are in professional-quality wine storage, and we spent 3 days there inspecting every bottle in the cellar. Because of the large volume of wines they are not available for quick delivery - we can’t bring them back to the store at one time, so to be safe please don't count on these until after Labor Day. Please inquire if you have any questions about this.

Clos du Rouge Gorge (Cyril Fhal) 2012 VdP des Côtes Catalanes L'Ubac

"From one of those rare parcels of Cinsault du Roussillon on a correct terroir. This variety, which made the reputation of certain wines of the South before phylloxera, has been neglected or badly planted since. Ubac is a parcel on a 70% slope of gneiss facing due north with 40 year-old vines worked by hand and by horse. It's the Pinot Noir of the South for me! Fine material, very delicate, with length and a strong signature of the terroir. Whole berry maceration of ten days, then foot-tread and put in vat, with stems for the fine tannins they provide. 20 month aging in Austrian demi-muid, bottled by gravity."  (Yields of 15 Hl/Ha, approx 20 mg SO2, 14% alc) 2012 looks to be a great vintage for L'Ubac. Tasted before bottling, the wine showed superb elegance and structure with fabulous length - opened on arrival in NY, the wine shows slight reduction then hints of cool blackberry and red-currant fruit with bitter chocolate and earth, but really quite closed. The palate is quite intense with deep black fruits, very firm acidity and fine tannins with dusty stone in the finish. No gobs here, but a sense of power and elegance to come. This is certainly one of the most interesting and profound reds from the South of France. Not for current drinking, probably best 2020 to 2030. DL

Lapierre 2015 Morgon

Matthieu and Camille Lapierre continue the beautiful work of their father, producing an elegant Morgon in the difficult, very ripe 2015 vintage. The wine shows lovely deep aromas of blackberry liqueur and earth lifted by hints of citrus, violet and mint. The palate is ripe and supple with plum, blackberry, earth, spice  and citrus. The finish is ripe, soft and lovely. We would recommend drinking this juicy Morgon, served quite cool, over the next five years, but longer term aging might be possible as well.

Adega Regional de Colares 2005 Colares Arenae Malvasia (500 ml)

This is the un-grafted Malvasia Colares, and is not to be confused with other Malvasias. The style here is more lemon, quince, and beeswax, than sweet and floral. Aged in foudre for four years, this 2005 has some rich some nutty qualities from aging, complemented by lovely petrol qualities, like a cross between Chenin and Riesling.  The finish is dry and saline, very Atlantic. This begs to be paired with cheese or a rich rice and seafood dish with saffron. There are tiny quantities of this wine. Limit 2 per person. cb

Els Jelipins 2009 Vi de Taula Sumoll

Gloria and Berta Garriga make Els Jelipins with great love and attention (but zero intervention) in the tiny hilly hamlet of Font-Rubi, Penedès (Spain's Cava country). The heart of this wine is the rare and beautiful Sumoll grape, which Gloria hunts determinedly, sometimes claiming just a handful of rows in vineyards normally relegated to local co-op production. Jelipins is brilliant upon release and haunting with additional age. With some time to open in the bottle or a decanter, the 2009 shows ravishing aromas of kirsch, cranberry, brambly blue fruit, lilacs, pencil lead, and café-au-lait; clear and layered flavors of mulberries, raspberry seeds, red currant, and tart black raspberry intertwine with sheer minerality and that fierce and buoyant acidity that is Jelipins' trademark. Each bottle is unique and wild. Gloria says it best: "The Els Jelipins philosophy is plagued by flaws-desire-contradictions-energy-dilemmas, like the wines that we love: always mature-subtle-vigorous-fine-balanced, at times strange-shy-surly-contradictory-hard, and never dressed up... Like us, spartan-combative-amicable-ridiculous-happy. Whether or not this is the right way to go (if there is a right way), it is the way we have chosen." Ariana Rolich

López de Heredia 1994 Rioja Gran Reserva Tondonia

75% Tempranillo, 15% Garnacha, and 10% Mazuelo and Graciano, aged 9 years in barrel and 9 years in bottle. Sweet, pretty aromas of balsamic, raspberries, coriander and crunchy leaves. Complex and well-structured on the palate with bright red cherry, chewy cranberry skins, woodsy thyme, thorny rose, clove spice, and crunchy leaves that remind us this fresh Rioja has some age. At the same time, its bright acidity and taut tannins alert us to many great years ahead! -Ariana Rolich

Terroir Al Límit 2011 Priorat Torroja Vi de la Vila

Dominik Huber of Terroir al Límit uncovers an unheralded side of Priorat in his inspired "village" red, the Torroja Vi de Vila. The Garnatxa and Carignan for this cuvée come from lower, flatter, and cooler vineyards than the precipitously steep, sun-baked, slate slopes that make Priorat famous (and famously difficult to farm, hence expensive). Fermented whole-cluster and aged in used 500L barrels and large foudres, the result is a bright, balanced, and food-friendly wine that has abundant red and purple berry fruit and exquisite floral and mineral layers to thrill devotees of the region (with refreshing acidity and moderate alcohol—13.5%—to subdue its detractors). An enlightened pairing with rabbit confit, roasted root vegetables, or the last tomatoes of the season. Ariana Rolich

Clos Fantine 2010 Faugeres Cuvee Courtiol (No SO2)

Every year the lovely ladies at Clos Fantine make a single varietal wine called "Cuvée Courtiol." In 2010, Courtiol comprised 100% Mourvèdre: the black, earthy, rustic variety often associated with the long-lived wines of Bandol. This wine has the classic grip of Mourvèdre with the tannic structure to age, yet is more generous than the young wines of Bandol generally are. The nose offers floral and dried fruit notes and the palate is lighter and more elegant than in 2009. Like the basic Faugères from Clos Fantine, this is a big-boned wine that wears its size very well. Bring on the cassoulet! -msb

Mas Jullien 2009 VdP Herault Blanc

The most forward ot the three vintages we are offering of Mas Jullien Blanc, this wine is an absolute show-stopper. The nose shows some Chenin character with honey and white, fleshy orchard fruits leaping from the glass. The palate is broad and ripe with impressive depth and a lingering sense of juicy, pear fruit. Perhaps best of all, the finish gives just a touch of bitter mineral that rounds out the experience. Try this bottle out on a white Burgundy drinker; it hits some of the same spots whist clearly maintaining its own identity. -msb

Clos du Rouge Gorge (Cyril Fhal) 2012 VdP des Côtes Catalanes Vieilles Vignes

80% Carignan, 20% Grenache, from  50 to 100 year-old vines on north and east facing slopes on terroir of gneiss. Yields of 15 to 20 hl/ha. Light foot pressing, whole bunch fermentation in wooden vats. Light extraction at low temperature, no pumping over or cap punching, 12 months in 500 liter barrel and old barriques. Bottled unfiltered, by gravity, total SO2 less than 20 mg/liter. Tasted in February 2014, before bottling, the wine showed gorgeous, bright black fruits with floral notes with fabulous elegance and length. On arrival in NY, the wine has tightened and will need decanting to show at it's best, but it's obviously a superb wine that will repay medium-term aging. Aromas of ripe blackberry and black-cherry, with violet, earth and stone. Dense fruit on the palate, medium-bodied and velvety with blackberry, cherry liqueur, licorice, earth and citrus with smoky fruit and minerals in the finish. Decant if drinking now, best after 3 to 5 years. DL

Leoville Las Cases 1989 St. Julien

Leoville las Cases is the greatest wine of Saint Julien. The blend is 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot. Its next door neighbor is the esteemed Chateau Latour. This 1989 Leoville is drinking beautifully at 20 + years of age, it is a deep ruby red starting to turn brick red at the rim, the tannins have dropped out, it has a rich bouquet of cedar and plums and mulberries and has become very soft and supple. This wine has reached its plateau of maturity and has at least another 10 years ahead of it.

Certified organic since 2009, the Dutraive family's Domaine de la Grand Cour produces subtle, traditional wines from their 9 hectares in Fleurie and a small parcel in Brouilly. Harvested by hand, the grapes ferment with wild yeasts in carbonic maceration, without addition of sulfur. The "Clos de la Grand Cour" is aged in a combination of cuve inox, barrels and foudres. The wine shows bright aromas of violets, raspberry and strawberry fruit, earth and spice. Pretty berry and plum fruits on the palate with refreshing citrusy acids. The palate opens up nicely with time showing deep red-currant, strawberry, beach plum and citrus with a long sappy finish.

Dutraive (Domaine de la Grand Cour) 2015 Fleurie Clos de la Grand Cour

Certified organic since 2009, the Dutraive family's Domaine de la Grand Cour produces subtle, traditional wines from their 9 hectares in Fleurie and a small parcel in Brouilly. Harvested by hand, the grapes ferment with wild yeasts in carbonic maceration, without addition of sulfur. The "Clos de la Grand Cour" is aged in a combination of cuve inox, barrels and foudres. The 2015 shows penetrating aromas of ripe strawberry and black cherry with pepper, iris, violet and earth. Elegant blackberry, plum-skin, licorice and earth on the palate, very deep and long, framed in firm acidity and quite powerful at 14.5% alcohol. This will be quite delicious now, served with steak, grilled pork, duck and strong cheeses, but should benefit from a few years of aging, best perhaps 2018 to 2022.

Dutraive (Domaine de la Grand Cour) 2015 Fleurie "Champagne" VV

From vines averaging 70 years of age in the Dutraives' 1.5 hectare parcel "Champagne." Yields are extremely low, the wine ages in barrels for 12 months, of which one-quarter are new. The wine shows elegant aromas of ripe berry fruit and spice framed in a bit of oak, quite elegant. The palate is dense and well-structured with raspberry and red currant fruit, a bit more high-toned and focused at this point than the other Dutraive Fleuries. The fruit is quite pretty, and the wood, though present, is not overdone and adds support to the power of this vintage. We look forward to drinking this after six to ten years of aging, perhaps alongside the Coudert Griffe du Marquis? David Lillie

Dutraive (Domaine de la Grand Cour) 2015 Fleurie Le Clos Vieilles Vignes

From low-yielding 60 to 70 year-old vines. Wild-yeast semi-carbonic maceration, without addition of SO2, aged 11 months in 1 to 4 year old barrels. Pretty aromas of raspberry and strawberry liqueur with violet, graphite and brown spice, brightened with citrus and herbal notes. The palate is round and quite ripe and dense with earthy red and black fruits, and supports well the 14.5% alcohol. The finish is supple and long, with adequate structure for 5 to 8 years of  aging. It's quite different from the 2014 vintage but equally enjoyable in its ripe, opulent style and may be quite beautiful with a few years in the cellar. David Lillie

Ducroux, Christian 2015 Vin de France Exspectatia

(We're getting to the end of Ducroux's complex and supernatural Exspectatia 2015 - be sure to grab some before it disapears. Happily we have 2015 Patience and 2016 Exspectatia on the way.)  Christian Ducroux' 5 hectare  estate has been certified organic and biodynamic since 1985, and has operated as a nearly self-sufficient farm, producing its own fertilizer and compost, and plowing and harvesting almost entirely without machinery. The vines average over 60 years of age and are replaced by massale selection, giving extremely low yields. The 2015 Exspectatia (the wine formerly known as Regnié) shows a deep opaque red/black color. Slight reduction, then vivid aromas of blackberry liqueur, blood orange, rose, black pepper, brown spices, earth and licorice. On the palate the wine is very complex with blackberry and red currant fruit, earth, spice and citrus with a long intense finish of black fruits and earth that lingers on the palate. Only 12.5% alcohol, even in this very ripe vintage. Bravo to Christian Ducroux for his beautiful farming and for this complex, expressive natural wine! Re-tasted in October 2016,  the wine showed beautifully, with remarkable complexity, intense aromas of ripe blackberry, violet, musk, pepper, licorice and earth, that continue with a dense, earthy texture on the palate. This is a living, changeable and profound wine of terroir that expresses the incredible farming and winemaking of Christian Ducroux - certainly  one of the finest natural wines of France.(Decanting advised, no added sulfur - consume on the day opened.)
