Matthieu and Bernard with La Croix Boissée 2014

The Loire Valley: Another Cellar, Overlooked Gems and New Arrivals - Featuring 2014 Baudry La Croix Boissée!

Share

Our cellar runneth over with beautiful wines from the Loire Valley as another small and very interesting collection has just arrived, along with the highly anticipated release of the Bernard and Matthieu Baudry 2014 Chinon La Croix Boissée! And some especially noteworthy wines remain from our recent "Connoisseur's Cellar" acquisition which we would like to bring to your attention. (Please Note: Racines NY will pour the Baudry 2014 Croix Boissée by the glass along with Amaury Beaufort's Bourgogne Tonnerre "Côte de Junay" and some very special new arrivals. Tonight, starting at 6pm, EL and DL behind the bar)

Of special note today are the beautiful wines of Manuela and François Chidaine, both in Montlouis and Vouvray. The Chidaines were pioneers of organic and biodynamic farming in the Loire Valley and their vinifications are meticulous and traditional, creating wines that will age beautifully for twenty years and more. Our tasting of the 2014s and 2015s with the Chidaines in February 2017 revealed  precise wines with perfect balance and firm acidity, beautifully showing the characteristics of each parcel. Our favorites that day were the 2015 Les Bournais, aromatically complex and lovely, and the remarkably elegant Clos Baudoins, but all the wines showed well and are highly recommended.

Baudry 2014 Chinon Le Clos Guillot

Le Clos Guillot is a beautiful south-east facing vineyard, just east of the town of Chinon, above the Clos de l'Olive and adjacent to Le Chêne Vert. The upper slope of the parcel is clay over limestone (the lower part has sand and gravel over the rock, which permitted a tiny separate production from franc de pied vines, now mostly deceased) and the vines are young, planted from 1993 to 2000. Fermentation in wooden cuves, 12 months of aging in two to five year-old barriques, 9 additional months in unlined cement vats. We have been buying this wine since it's first production in 2000 – it's one of the most elegant and Burgundian of Chinons. In 2014, the Baudrys produced superb wines with perfect balance and lovely, pure fruit. Their precise vinifications, matched to each different terroir, with no new oak, minimal sulfur, and elevage of the right length and in the right barrel, foudre or vat, gave elegant and delicous results. The 2014 Clos Guillot is a black/purple color with red rim, showing intense aromas of red currant, boysenberry, blackberry, fines herbs, citrus and stone with hints of dark chocolate and musk. The palate shows bright, lush, sappy red and black fruits with bright acidity lifting the flavors and coating the palate with citrusy red fruits, saline minerals and wet stone.  Beautiful wine! Case quantities are possible, but don't delay. DL

Baudry 2014 Chinon La Croix Boissée (3 btl max)

The 2014 Croix Boissée Rouge is a magnificent wine. We have tasted the wine from barrel on three different occasions and it's definitely one of the best wines the Baudrys have ever made ("our best since 2010,"says Matthieu), and one of the very best reds of the Loire Valley in 2014. The wine received a more than two year elevage in young barrels, none were new, and was bottled with only 10mg of SO2. Last tasted in January of 2017, the wine showed superb, pure aromas of black fruits and violets. The palate was dense and chalky, with meaty black fruits with remarkable purity and length and perfect structure for aging. This will obviously open up to become a complex and beautiful mature wine, probably best from 2025 to 2040. We look forward to opening a bottle on arrival for a more detailed description. 3 bottle limit, please. (While one may not think of the Baudrys as "natural" wine producers, their farming is totally organic, their vinifications are without extraction, and without SO2 added until bottling - only 10 mg per liter.  David Lillie

Baudry 2014 Chinon Cuvée Domaine

We're very excited about the arrival of the superb 2014 Chinon "Cuvee Domaine" from Bernard and Matthieu Baudry.  All Cabernet Franc of course, a blend of 75% from a parcel in St. Louans, where the thin clay/limestone soils give earthy well-structured wines, with 25% from gravel soils near Cravant, giving supple fruit and freshness. Organic farming, wild-yeast fermentation, aging in 5 to 10 year-old wooden vats and casks. Tasted from barrel in February of 2016 the wine was quite beautiful , if a bit closed, showing lovely pure red fruit aromas with a supple, ripe palate, very deep and long and framed in perfect earthy acidity. Upon arrival in NY (October 2016), the wine is singing, with aromas of wild strawberry and red currant with white pepper, earth and cocoa. The palate is fresh and balanced with pretty red fruits, earth and citrus notes, really long and lovely. This will be a superb and unique Chinon, both to drink young and for cellaring of fifteen to twenty years. Serve cool with roast chicken, pork dishes, charcuterie, green vegetables and mild cheeses.  Highly recommended. DL (Those who want a bit of the mature experience should:  open the bottle, taste - yum - re-cork and put in fridge; wait three days, enjoy!)   Featured in the NY Times "20 Wines Under $20" 01/12/17

Baudry 2012 Chinon La Croix Boissée

Mature Chinons from the Baudrys are perhaps my favorite wines (although old bottles of Clos Rougeard Coteaux de Saumur aren't bad either). I'm hoping that my wife will give me some of the 2012 Croix Boissée to cellar - it's a near-perfect wine and will be a joy to drink in 2030! From a small parcel of clay over limestone on a south-facing slope above Cravant. 24 months of aging in 2 to 4 year-old barriques. (Over the years, the Baudrys have moved to a more gentle extraction on this wine and have lengthened the barrel aging, never in new oak) This is a great Croix Boissée, rivaling in a lighter frame, the superb 2010. Brighter and more floral, this is an amazingly beautiful Chinon, lovely, lively and wonderfully balanced, with firm acidity and very pronounced saline minerals. A wine to marvel at, not to write about - thanks to the Baudrys for their artistry! David Lillie

Clos Roche Blanche 2013 Touraine Pif

Any walk in the vineyard at Clos Roche Blanche was accompanied by Pif trotting ahead, still alive we hope, thought quite old now. A gentle and faithful dog. This year's version of the namesake wine (Côt and Cabernet Franc) is quite serious with complex, deep aromas of plum, blackberry and earth with herbal notes. Earthy black fruits on the palate with firm acidity and more tannin than usual. Serve cool with a steak, grilled meats, roast chicken. Open well in advance or cellar a few years for peak drinking.

Clos Roche Blanche 2014 Touraine Sauvignon Bl No. 2

This is the last vintage for Catherine and Didier at the Clos Roche Blanche. They have been important catalysts for organic farming and natural vinifications in the Loire Valley and beyond. With their intelligence, good humor and beautiful wines they made friends all over America and have been of great importance to us at Chambers Street both personally and professionally. This wine, the Touraine Sauvignon Blanc, was our biggest seller when we opened Chambers Street - now it is allocated to stores and restaurants across the country so while we may have less to sell it remains a sentimental favorite, and this last vintage is a worthy and delicious good-bye to all of their customers. The wine shows lovely aromas of pear liqueur, citrus, spice, lime-flower and stone with a hint of yeast. The palate is dense with ripe pear, lemon zest and minerals with a firm long finish of white fruits and saline acids. Youthful and delicious now, this will benefit from five to ten years of aging, or even more. Put some history in your cellar! Thank you Catherine and Didier!

Huet 2009 Vouvray Le Haut Lieu Demi-Sec

*This wine is in the warehouse and will not be available for pick-up or delivery until after Labor Day.

This showed fabulously in February of 2012, with gorgeous white fruit and honeyed citrus aromas. The palate is quite balanced for a 2009, with good acidity and terrific length. A beautiful wine, confirming that, in general, demi-sec Vouvrays are more successful than the dry wines in 2009. Highly recommended.

Bellivière 2011 Jasnières Calligramme

The Belliviere Calligramme is one of the greatest Chenin Blancs of France and it's superb in 2011, showing less residual sugar than in some vintages but still quite full and ample in style. From old vines on south-facing slopes  of clay and flint over limestone descending to the Loir. 20 months in 600 liter used barriques. Remarkably complex herbal, floral, stony white fruit aromas. Sensational balance, length and mineral acidity on the palate. This wine is in the warehouse and will not be available for pick-up or delivery until after Labor Day.

Chidaine 2015 Montlouis Sur Loire Les Bournais

This is usually our favorite wine from François and Manuela Chidaine, long-time champions of organic and biodynamic farming in the Loire Valley. Named after the soil type "Les Bournais," a unique clay topsoil over limestone (tuffeau blanche) also found across the river in Vouvray.  "A harvest of superb quality...a vintage we dream of having more frequently," say the Chidaines about 2015, and indeed the wines are superb, possessing beautiful fruit and perfect balance. The 2015 "Les Bournais" has 2 grams of RS and sensational aromas of white fruits and citrus with floral notes and even some hints of raspberry. The palate is full and elegant, though dry, quite dense and long. Delicious now this wine will age beautifully - ten to twenty yrears in the cellar should reveal something very interesting. Highly recommended.  David Lillie   (This wine is in the warehouse and will not be available for pick-up or delivery until after Labor Day)

Chidaine 2015 Vouvray Clos Baudoins

Francois and Manuel Chidaine have led a revival of quality in Montlouis over the last twenty-five years and are now making outstanding Vouvrays from the former Poniatowski vineyards in Vouvray. The Chidaine's vinyeard work is among the finest in France and the disater they took over from Poniatowski has happily come back to life. Tasted in February 2017, we stopped writing, except for Excellent! Super! Very mineral and long!! Anyway we loved it, and although it would be superb drunk now with an elegant fish preparation, cellaring of ten to twenty years will be amply rewarded.... Ecu (Guy Bossard) 2010 Muscadet Sevre et Maine Granite

Guy Bossard's "Expression de Granite" is one of the great Muscadets and 2010 was a superb vintage in the region. This wine in mid-life will need decanting now, but should awaken to drink beautifully within an hour or two.  Highly recommended. Huet 2008 Vouvray Le Haut-Lieu Demi-Sec

2008 is a great vintage for moelleux and demi-sec Vouvray as the high acidity of the vintage gives fabulous brightness and balance to the extra sweetness. "A vintage with high acidity but great ripeness, unusual, not since 1893, it was a trick to balance the alcohol and the sugar." - Noel Pinguet.  Tasted in February of 2009, the Huet Le Haut Lieu Demi-Sec showed beautifully with pretty aromas of quince, grapefruit, earth and lime-flower, balanced with very firm acidity and a lovely finish of mineral and citrus flavors. 27 grams of RS, aout 13% alcohol. Highly recommended. David Lillie  (This wine is in the warehouse and will not be available for pick-up or delivery until after Labor Day.)

Huet 2015 Vouvray Le Haut Lieu Sec

*This wine is in the warehouse and will not be available for pick-up or delivery until after Labor Day.

Le Haut-Lieu—The original Huët vineyard is nearly 9 hectares. It has the richest soils of the domaine’s three crus—a deep limestone-clay—and the wines are generally the estate’s most approachable. In some vintages, small quantities from nearby estate parcels may be added to Le Haut-Lieu." 2015 Le Haut Lieu: 13% alcohol, 6 grams/liter RS, 5.6 gr/l acidity.
