The immaculate barrel room at Fichet

White Light, White Heat- Burgundy from Fichet and Colin-Morey

Today we are pleased to offer an assortment of white Burgundies from a pair of our favorite growers. Each makes magnificently pure and terroir specific wines through painstaking work in the vines as well and meticulous work in the cellar. Their wines are individual, precise, sauve, and age beautifully.

Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey is unquestionably one of the top producers of white Burgundy, producers alongside such growers as Leflaive, Ramonet and Roulot. He produces a full range of whites from Bourgogne Blanc, up to grand crus. The wines are rich, yet mineral, ripe and precise. He has a knack for revealing the energy in ripe vintages and making beautiful wines out of decidedly difficult years. In short, the winemakers' winemaker.

In a village seemingly overrun by top flight growers (Roulot, Coche-Dury, Lafon, Jobard come too mind), Jean-Philippe Fichet, has become something of an unheralded star. But the star shines bright in his immaculate cellars in Meursault. Old vines, fastidious work in the vineyards, and long elevage combine to produce some of the most detailed and elegant white Burgungies we've tasted. A visit to his immaculately clean cellars was a revelation. As expected his 2014s were gorgeous, but in the warm 2015 vintage, his wines showed great purity, detail, and transparency, albeit in a different register. These are serious Meursaults (not to mention Puligny and Bourgogne) with all the energy, terroir delineation, and minerality that Burgundy lovers adore. Happy hunting! John McIlwain

Fichet 2014 Meursault

From multiple lieux-dits across Meursault. 10% 15% new oak. The 2014 Meursault villages shows plenty of the verve of the vintage. Aromas of white flowers and orchard fruit dominate the nose, with hints of wet stone and a discreet note of oak adding interest. The palate is vibrant and ripe with warm pear and citrus flavors underlain with a stony, nearly saline minerality. This is a lovely village level wine and should shine with 3-5 years in the cellar. Fichet 2015 Auxey-Duresses Blanc

The 2015 Auxey-Duresses blanc displays a cool-toned nose with aromas of Meyer lemon, white flowers, crushed herbs, and white peach skin. The palate is racy and sapid with ripe citrus flavors buoyed by an incisively chalky minerality on a long, energetic, and detailed finish. Bracing and delicious now, this should really shine with a few years in the cellar. John McIlwain

Fichet 2015 Bourgogne Blanc Vieilles Vignes

Just a touch of reduction at first, giving way to high-toned, lifted, perfumed aromatics with scents of white flowers, lemon oil, tangerine peel, and hazelnuts.Riper, richer palate with citrus flavors with notes of honey and quinine with a stony and detailed finish. This has plenty of class and certainly compares favorably to others' village level wines. Decant if drinking now or cellar for 3-5 years to allow elements to integrate. John McIlwain

Fichet 2015 Meursault

The 2015 Meursault shows a degree of the ripeness of the vintage, though it manifests itself in a layered density, rather than softness or weight. The nose offers aromas of ripe pear, honeysuckle, and orange oil, with just a hint of reduction which blows off with some tine in the glass. The palate is ripe, lush and shows good concentration, framed by a pungent minerality and acidity. Tasting the 2014 and 2015 vintages side by side in the cellar, it was remarkable how much energy was inherent in the wines in each. John McIlwain

Fichet 2015 Meursault Le Tesson

Le Tesson is one of the best of what writer Clive Coates has termed the "Deuxième Crus,"  with excellent bottlings also from Roulot, Pierre Morey, and Bouzereau. Fichet's 2015 balances rich ripe fruit with great mineral character. The nose is pretty, honeyed,  and golden fruited. On the palate, there are ripe flavors of stone fruit, orange peel,  and salt on an lingering, expansive, rising finish. Beautiful. John  McIlwain

Fichet 2015 Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru Referts

Though duly famous for his Meursaults, Jean-Philippe Fichet makes one heck of a Puligny-Montrachet. His 2015 Puligny 1er cru Les Referts is just beautiful with a nose redolent of white flowers, lemon blossom, white apricot, lemon, and a cool sweet green note, reminiscent of sugar snap peas. The flavor profile matches ripe white fruits with a clinging stoniness on a lifted, energetic, and long finish. This is fabulous and displays more Puligny class than vintage ripeness. John McIlwain
